Interview

Autopsy Continues The Reign Of Gore

The U.S. death metal monster Autopsy was slain back in '95, allowing a gore-soaked phoenix to rise from the infected ashes as Abscess took over, injecting a dirty punk vibe to the usual death metal mayhem.

2011 saw history repeat itself, but this time in the opposite order, as Abscess finally succumbed to internal rot and imploded. In a ritual involving headless zombies, brain-consuming metal fanatics, and self-mutilation, Chris Reifert managed to resurrect Autopsy from the pits of Hell, and since then the demonic musical manifestation has released a stunning three aural assaults on the mortal world.

With Autopsy recently being covered in our Sunday Old School column and new album "Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves" out now, I braved life and limb (mostly limb - I mean just look at that album cover!) to speak with the necromancer/musician Chris Reifert and discover what foul magic has been enacted on this latest go around. Read on - if you dare - to learn the final fate of Abscess, the blasphemous imagery soon to hit the digital world from Autopsy's comic release, and how Reifert is getting out his punk urges with a new project. The album marks the band's third album and first in 29 years, when the sophomore LP "Killer Elite" was issued in 1985 via Neat Records.

Mark Appleton of Rocksector Records commented: "Hooking up with Avenger is an exciting step. Gary Young (ex-Blitzkrieg) - Drums/Vocals
Ian Swift (ex-Atomkraft/ex-Tysondog) - Vocals
Ian "Fuzz" Fulton - Bass

Wovenwar Posts Studio Video

Wovenwar documented the recording process of the band's self-titled debut album and the first studio video features a candid looking at drummer Jordan Mancino tracking his parts for the record. Check it out below. Jordan Mancino reflects on tracking for the new album:

"It's weird to think that I finished tracking drums for this Wovenwar record over 5 months ago. What an amazing and powerful experience it was being back in the studio creating and tracking with Nick, Phil, and Josh, and for the first time with Shane. Our past studio experiences together have always been done with the utmost efficiency and professionalism.

"With this Wovenwar record, we carried that same dedication of efficiency, but with more room and purpose to create while in the studio. This being the first time in the studio with Shane it was easy to tell that he shares the same dedication as the four us. Having Bill and Jason as producers, Daniel and Joseph as engineers, as well Colin and Carl for mixing, I couldn't have imagined a more epic team of dudes to be part of this record.

"The history we all have together set the tone and comfort for this recording process, but what was accomplished was much more than I ever imagined. I am honored to be part of this record and honored to stand alongside my fellow band mates and production team as we begin this process of showing 'All Rise' to the world."

Wovenwar, featuring the talents of Jordan Mancino (drums), Nick Hipa (guitar), Phil Sgrosso (guitar) and Josh Gilbert (bass) of San Diego, California based metal act As I Lay Dying, and Shane Blay (vocals) of Oh, Sleeper, also just released the first single titled "All Rise." Give it a listen at this location.

Over the last year, Wovenwar completed work on the new material recorded with producer Bill Stevenson (Descendents, Black Flag) with mixing duties currently being handled by Colin Richardson (Slipknot, Machine Head, Trivium). Wovenwar's debut self-titled release will be dropping in late summer 2014. More...

Mercenary Posts "Welcome The Sickness" Video

Danish modern metal act Mercenary posted a new music video for the track "Welcome the Sickness." The song appears on the latest album "Through Our Darkest Days," which is available now through NoiseArt Records and Prosthetic Records. The video was directed & produced by Mircea Gabriel Eftemie.

The band commented: "We’re immensely proud to be able to present our new video for ‘Welcome The Sickness.’ It’s been a great and fun experience making this possible through a crowdfunding campaign and interacting with the fans in a whole new way. We are very grateful for the support, as we would never have been able to finance a visit in Denmark’s biggest green screen studio with professional lights and makeup followed by two months of post production on our own. Moreover, we are really really happy with the striking, atmospheric, and visually dramatic way in which director Mircea Eftemie made our musical universe come to life. Without an incredible amount of hard work on his behalf, this video wouldn't have been possible either, so please send a lot of kudos his way."

Warbringer Parts Ways With Two Members

Warbringer, which released latest album "IV: Empires Collapse" late last year, has issued the following announcement about parting ways with two members:

"So guys, all our fans and supporters, Kevill here up way too late drinkin', there's some bad news and as our awesome fans you guys deserve to know. I don't feel right about our prolonged silence on this issue and I think it's time we clear things up.

"Drummer for the 3rd and 4th records Carlos Cruz and founding guitarist John Laux have left the band. This is a huge and devastating blow to us, and it makes even my own self doubt our future. Carlos made great contributions on the last two records, and John Laux started the band with me, we wrote our first songs together.

"The more astute listeners have noticed this, as our last tour we did not have either of them on board. As for the why's, I don't entirely understand it myself, so I can't provide a decent explanation here. I really wish I understood more than I do.

"Still remaining is myself, founding member Adam Carroll (he's back) and bassist of the fourth record Ben Mottsman.

"This is why you haven't heard much from us lately, why the nonstop touring machine has grinded to a halt, and why any updates here are more about the past than they are of the future. More...

Vile Regression To Release "Empires"

Formed from the ashes of Irish extreme metal outfit Vistor Q, Vile Regression hit the scene in 2010 and subsequently released debut record "The Pattern Evolves" in 2011 via Casket Music.

Vile Regression went on from the release to share stages with prolific heavyweights such as Dyscarnate, Fleshgod Apocalypse and Unearth. 2013 saw the band head back to the studio to record a new installment titled "Empires."

Today details on "Empires" have been announced. The track listing will be as follows:

1. Tides
2. Raze The Complexity
3. Dream Of The Red Chamber
4. Thought Replication
5. The Abstract
6. Down To A Sunless Sea
7. The Empyrean Divide

"Empires" will be released independently on July 21st, 2014. The band also comments on the coming release:

“We feel, ‘Empires’ is a very powerful word, invoking strength and confidence. The title came from the overarching theme within the lyrics, that being positivity and empowerment in ones life. While 'The Pattern Evolves' dealt with very specific themes of corruption and governments, ‘Empires’ is much more positive. Lyrically the songs deal with different aspects of human emotions such as reaching your potential in life and being the master of your own empire. Songs such as ‘Raze The Complexity’ and ‘The Abstract’ are basically about being confident in yourself and purging the toxic and harmful elements around you."

Azooma Reveals New EP Details

The release date for the debut EP from Iranian death metal band Azooma has been set for June 15th through Xtreem Music and will be entitled "A Hymn of the Vicious Monster." Check out the advance song "Encapsulated Delusion" in the player below.

Azooma frontman Shahin Vaqfipour commented on the concept: "We really like the idea of telling a story throughout this EP, we want each song to be unique but all of them to relate to each other and complete each other. We wanted to create something new and at the same time, staying true to the roots of Death Metal and its traditions.

"'A Hymn of the Vicious Monster' is about a normal person who seems to be a victim of the situations he is in, but eventually it becomes clear that if the conditions are right, he can turn into the monster which he thinks he is a victim of.

"It's the nature of mankind. If he has the opportunities, he can turn into something evil which he thinks he would never be and do some vicious deeds. Everyone has this potential, but the true power and purity is not to let this nature, this essence grow."

The EP was mixed and mastered by Iranian producer Ehsan Imani in Mixter Blaze Studio and the artwork was created by the young and talented artist Shahryar Shervin. Shahin comments: More...

Lords Of Saturn Pushes Back "Unto The Monolith"

Mathias Lodmalm from Lords of Saturn has issued the following announcement about pushing back the release of the limited "Unto The Monolith" cassette:

"Dear Saturnians,

"As you might have noticed, the release of 'Unto the Monolith' is being pushed to a yet to be determined future date. I am taking time away from the band to focus on personal matters and completing several other works I am involved with.

"Putting another release out at this point just for the sake of it would be in breach of the bands core values. I hope to return to my role in the band at a future date but I cannot put a time line to the force of creativity and personal commitment at this time.

"I put the bar high on the releases bearing the LoS sigil and Some Other Records. At this point we are not at the point of arrival. Watch the skies."
