Pit Stories: The Show We Weren't Supposed To Play
Time for a new Pit Story for all you rabid show loving metal heads. This week U.K. outfit Bad Guys share the following tale of playing a show they hadn't been invited to play and causing a whole lottta ruckus with the Melvins:
Our first gig was in a crowded chalet at a Butlins holiday resort in Minehead, South West Engerland. It was an early All Tomorrow's Parties festival in 2008 curated by Melvins/Mike Patton and we hadn't been asked to play. So we played anyway.
Sneaking the equipment in, shoving the fold up beds out of the way and inviting the entire drunken festival back to the chalet was the easy part, getting them out without trashing the place was a little trickier. But we'd not planned that far ahead.
We had no songs, just handful of riffs and Stuart sang lyrics from a little notebook he had that looked like a miniature bible. It was cold outside so people started climbing through the windows and it quickly became a packed, sweaty party. Everyone was drunk enough to not notice we didn't have any songs and starting going a little nuts. There was a dude crowd surfing in the kitchenette area and breakfast cereal was being thrown around the lounge/sleeping room, mud was being trampled up the walls, ceiling and television and fist holes started to appear in the thin plasterboard walls.
It all started going really wrong when Jared from the Melvins climbed through the window, standing on the power cable to my amp, ripping it out of the socket and the kitchen table collapsed under the weight of the 7 dudes standing on it. It became a drum - vocal ensemble for a short while after that until security finally swamped the chalet and shut us down, some disgruntled kid head butted a security guard and was being pinned to the bonnet (hood) of a car outside.
The Head of Butlin's slapped a £450 fine on us for rebuilding the chalet and removed our wristbands for the festival. We were back in the festival within the hour and started planning next year’s chalet gig.
The Bad Guys recently dropped a new album titled "Bad Guynaecology," which can be streamed at Bandcamp here or in the player below. More...

Child Bite Checks In With Studio Report
Detroit's punk metal/noise rock misfits from Child Bite recently took a brief pause from their U.S. live takeover to record a forthcoming new full-length at Philip H. Anselmo's famed Nodferatu's Lair.
Reports vocalist Shawn Knight from the Lair: "We've been having a blast in the studio with Philip Anselmo! Historically, Child Bite has tracked full-length LPs in two to four days, so it has been both strange and relieving to spend two full weeks at Nodferatu's Lair.
"The thirteen songs we tracked sound incredible, ten of which will make up the album while the other three will be released independently. In our spare time, we also shot a music video for 'Mongoloid Obsession' off of the 'Strange Waste' EP. Written and directed by the band, it's a lo-if slab of Ed Wood-meets-John Waters bafoonery. Look for that sucker any day now!"
The band's forthcoming long player will be unleashed via Anselmo's Housecore Records later this year. You can also see the band live on these dates: More...

Metal Allegiance Signs With Nuclear Blast
After successful appearances at sea on Shiprocked and the Motorboat cruise, as well as an unforgettable show before NAMM in Anaheim this past January, the Metal Allegiance collective has signed their first-ever record deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment.
The worldwide deal stems from the various musicians uniting to write and record original material this past Winter. Brought together by Metal Allegiance principal partner Mark Menghi, the original material came together from the creative minds of David Ellefson of Megadeth, Mike Portnoy of The Winery Dogs, and Alex Skolnick from Testament alongside Menghi.
The four writers then reached out through their metal rolodexes to a diverse lineup of performers, each adding their own personal musical stamp to the collection of nine original songs. More information on the performers and individual track lineups will be released in the near future. The debut album from Metal Allegiance is slated for release this Fall.
Nuclear Blast Entertainment President Monte Conner offered up his label as the home for Metal Allegiance after several meetings. Upon hearing the demos and seeing the list of performers, he felt it was something he wanted to be a part of. Conner comments: More...

“Progressive metal drawing influence from many genres such as rock, metal, jazz, alternative and instrumental music... 'Living Bridges' is a culmination of musical styles, concepts and several years of writing,” comments the band on the release and follow-up to the 2011 "Aeonian Sequence" EP.
The four-piece from Limerick is also happy to announce the inking of a record deal with independent Irish label Out On A Limb Records. Comments Shardborne: “We're delighted to be working with the guys in Out On A Limb. Any help we can get getting our music out is greatly appreciated! They are really great people to be working with and they are on the same page as us about the release of the album and how to work with our music. We've been aware of the label for quite a while so it's nice to be added as part of the OOAL family.”
Out On A Limb Records joint owner Ciarán had this to say about the label’s newest signing: “When [Shardborne] sent us on Living Bridges for a listen, it really exceeded my expectations. I knew a good few of the tracks from hearing them live but hearing the whole thing together brought it to a whole new level. They've got their shit together in every way possible, and they're good guys too, which is an important thing when you're running an independent label like ours.” More...
Neck Of The Woods Releasing EP
Neck Of The Woods will release a self-titled debut EP on May 22nd. The following press release was also issued about the band:
"Complex, confrontational, and unflinchingly heavy, Neck Of The Woods is the most exciting progressive metal band to emerge from Vancouver, BC’s underground scene in a generation.
"Spearheaded by guitarists Dave Carr and Travis Hein’s interwoven riffing, Jeff Brown’s intricate drumming, and Jeff Radomsky (a pro skateboarder-turned-frontman who spends as much time in the crowd as on stage), the quartet deliver a punishing and exhilarating experience live and on record.
"Having spent the best part of a year locked in rehearsal rooms defining and refining their sound, Neck of the Woods finally surfaced as a polished force, delivering a debut demo containing tracks ‘Left Behind’ and ‘Two Smokes,’ along with a series of shows that immediately created a buzz through their hometown’s metal scene.
"This instant acclaim led to Neck of the Woods being selected to represent Vancouver in the Wacken Metal Battle Finals in Toronto. Winning more fans, and narrowly missing the first prize of a slot at the German Festival, gigs alongside bands like Havok, Wretched, Wolves in the Throne Room and The Faceless were their deserved reward.
"With the release of a self-titled EP this May, the band's first tour of Western Canada, and shows at the Calgary and Armstrong Metal Festivals, Neck of the Woods os poised to make another giant leap towards the metal elite." More...

Dolentia Releasing "Iniciação Eversiva"
Altare Productions is proud to present Dolentia's second album, "Iniciação Eversiva," set for international release on June 22nd. The label had this to say:
"Although Portugal is usually known for a more centrist, rather drab black metal scene, in recent years, the country has become home to a cabal of unapologetically raw yet incredibly melodic BM hordes.
"Through a number of demos, splits, and the subsequent Sob a Égide das Sombras debut album in 2012, Dolentia have pulled into pole position as the leaders of this shadowy scene - and with 'Iniciação Eversiva,' the quartet have laid bare a stark monument of emotive, mystical black metal.
"Surging forth with cascading waves of ritualism, ghoulish and desperate, Dolentia ensnare the listener right from the very start, and unlike a number of their immediate contemporaries, they have captured a clear yet uncompromised recording, all of which highlight the band's lyrics written in their native tongue, dealing with death, occultism, witchcraft, Portuguese mysticism, old rituals, old ruins, lost hidden places in the depths of the Portuguese mountains and forests: true pieces of poetry, just like their music, although not entirely accessible to non-Portuguese readers. Hate Premieres New Lyric Video
Polish death metal tyrants Hate have unleashed the new lyric video for "Rise Omega The Consequence!" right here on Metal Underground.com. The track appears on the band's latest album "Crusade: Zero," which we reviewed over at this location.
"Crusade: Zero" is the band's ninth studio release, which was issued via Napalm Records back in January. It was the swan song for departing guitarist Konrad Ramotowski a/k/a Destroyer (who left back in April) and first to feature drummer Pawel Jaroszewicz a/k/a Pavulon behind the kit.
For the lyric video the band commented: "We teamed up again with Redpig Production to create this vision of the Universe and magnitude of the energies contained within it - worlds in worlds, cold void and monster explosions. It is like a voyage through aeons of raging darkness and burning cores. The song is about Darklight (OMEGA), illuminating dark energy that permeates every thing. It is also a tribute to Chaos, which is the origin and the end of things. I hope you will find this appealing as much as we do. Hail Tiamat!"
