Metallica's self-titled fifth studio album (commonly referred to as "The Black Album"), already the best-selling album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, has become the first album to scan over 16 million units in SoundScan's history.
In addition to this milestone, "The Black Album" continues to hold the record for the most weeks spent on the Billboard 200 chart in the Nielsen SoundScan era. At 307 weeks on the Billboard 200, it is also the third longest charting studio album (following the transcendent releases Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" and Carole King's "Tapestry") and the sixth longest charting album of any kind in Billboard history.
A notable portion of those 307 weeks is the current run of 20 consecutive weeks that "The Black Album" has spent on the Billboard 200 in 2014. This is due in large part to the band's performance on the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on January 26th, followed two days later by the release of "Metallica Through the Never" on all home video formats. It’s about finding one’s self in a war-torn world and bonding together with like-minded people in order to start a peaceful revolution. We face a lot of difficulties throughout our daily lives and in a world where that seems to be the norm, sometimes the only thing we seem to have is ourselves and what we know.”

Earth's career, like its music, has always been a slow, deliberate progression with each record slightly removed from the last, a constant refinement of a singular vision.

Armageddon first came to life in Sweden in 1997 as a studio project, with cult album "Crossing the Rubicon," a sci-fi themed concept album. West Virginia outfit Byzantine has issued the following announcement about working on an upcoming album:
"It's been very quiet here in the Byzantine camp, and for good reason. We have taken the last few months to write what will become our 5th studio album.
"Tomorrow will be our first rehearsal in almost 3 months. We will begin learning the new songs, adding personal touches and making them true Byzantine songs. 7 songs have been written so far. We most likely will be adding a few more new songs along the way as well.
"With our new bassist Sean Sydnor and lead guitarist Brian Henderson both making their Byzantine recording debut here, this album will surely be a departure from our previous efforts. Stay tuned for more updates. Recording will begin in September when engineer/producer Jay Hannon lands back in WV."
Further details are forthcoming, and you can follow the band's recording process at Facebook here.
Seattle's Drawn And Quartered has issued the following announcement about working on a new album:
"I am very pleased to share the fact that tracking has begun for the next Drawn And Quartered collection of songs. I still call them records. In fact I only care about seeing it released on vinyl.
"Some of the writing for this record began several years ago, when Dario was still with us. In fact we'd gotten pretty far on writing some great material. But when he left, I didn't feel like we should use what we had in the form that it was in. Through trial and error, I began arranging some of the riffs and song ideas together. The thought I had was, 'let's record a few new songs and get a feel for what our new line-up would be like.' I thought we'd use some of the recordings for a split 7", maybe a compilation or two. We'd get a feel for how we wanted to sound and then write all new material for the full length record.
"Originally Drawn And Quartered would remain a 3 piece band, something that Herb and I had really enjoyed since Greg left in 2008. We(I am) are a bit anti-social, bringing in new people to our very personal art is not something we take lightly. I was excited that Beau had agreed to act as our drummer. Here is a person I had known for many years. Who was a devastating bass player/vocalist. He became an accomplished guitar player through years of hard work. And had developed some great drum chops. Soon after we started writing, Simon showed interest in playing drums. This would give me another shot at having the second guitarist I'd wanted as part of the band for many years, that due to timing or various reasons hadn't materialized on a record. More...
Dir En Grey has issued the following announcement
"Vocalist Kyo has set up a tremendous line-up to give birth to his solo project: Sukekiyo. Expectations have been huge right from the start, but Sukekiyo did not fail to meet those and even surpasses them. Kyo’s unique style is omnipresent in every single note which leads to a distracted, dark and vivid sound that will mesmerize their listeners.
"The first album Immortalis hit no.1 in the Japanese charts and after a completely sold out Japan tour, the band will now come to Europe for a select number of very exclusive and intimate live shows. This tour is the rare chance to discover the genius musical vision of Kyo closer than ever before! Tickets will go on sale on Friday June 6, 2014."
