Podcast

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 5

Co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) kick off this week’s podcast episode by tackling some of the cultural peculiarities of hardcore crowds versus metal crowds, with a specific focus on the irritating “hardcore dancing” trend.

Next up, a public service warning. Mike shares a disturbing story related by singer Tommy “Vext” Cummings (Snot, ex-Divine Heresy), in which he confesses to have been manipulated and deceived by a conniving “Catfish” at large within the online metal network. Beware a Facebook profile by the name of “Elizabeth George” and the Twitter handle "SWEET_BGIRL" with multiple connections to metal industry types; this individual is a dangerous con artist.

Also, on a related and semi-prophetic note, refer to the opening segment of the recent OpEd “From Dicks To Chicks.”

Finally, the news of the week: Kevin and Mike discuss the fate of As I Lay Dying and Austrian Death Machine bandleader Tim Lambesis, who has just pled guilty to the attempted contract murder of his estranged wife. As they explore the implications, your hosts do not shy away from facing various matters of morality, personal responsibility, standards, and accountability.

Take a listen here, enjoy, and offer us your feedback.

Interview

Metal Church Singer Comments on Tour

From the operatic range of Ronny Munroe's voice to the tight presentation of guitarists Rick Van Zandt and Kurdt Vanderhoof, Metal Church's performance at Backstage Live in San Antonio brought to mine the term professional. Songs like "Ton of Bricks," "Gods of Wrath" and "Metal Church" whipped the crowd into a frenzy. Some of these songs have held their fans in thrall for thirty years.

Besides legends like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Kiss and Metallica, few metal artists have the power to stay relevant like Metal Church. In fact, if it weren't for Metallica guitar tech and then-Metal Church guitarist, John Marshall, stepping in as James Hetfield's guitar hand on tour (Hetfield burned his hand on a stage pyro), Metal Church would have never made its way into my ears.

The group's success isn't linear, though, as the group has stepped away from the big lights a couple of times. Their most recent hiatus came in 2009 after releasing "This Present Wasteland." The group issued "Generation Nothing" last year and followed the release up with a reunion show at 70,000 Tons of Metal. Now that the band has returned to its former glory, they've assailed North American crowds with their no-bullshit-brand of true heavy metal. Before speaking from the book of heavy metal in San Antonio, vocalist Ronny Munroe and I grabbed the green room at Backstage Live to Metal Church's experiences on the road and the events that helped make the tour possible. Die Apokalyptischen Reiter Announces New Album

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter has announced the band's new album will be titled "Tief.Tiefer." ("Deep.Deeper.") and will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Die Apokalyptischen Reiter comments:

"If there ever has been a genre we have been part of, we have definitively overcome its boundaries. Standing still, stagnation and rules bore us. Everything is moving. The world. Life. Thoughts."

To record the successor to 2011's "Moral & Wahnsinn," the band gave itself more than 1000 days and it wouldn’t be long till it came clear that the variety of ideas were not to be put on a usual record.

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter adds: “It was pure magic. Unbelievable and almost unreal. Though we’ve been making music together for so long, we still manage to amaze and surprise ourselves. Our wealth is joy.

"This time we have been composing far from home. We went to Ural and the Florida Keys, hiked through Riesengebirge, found solitude at Uckermark. And our rehearsal room was built out of a houseboat.

"Nothing was safe from us. Not even our own songs. We’ve learnt to seize the magic of a moment, just as well as the persistent transformation of a fleeting thought in a great song." More...

Shadow Host Streaming Recent Album

"Apocalyptic Symphony" from Russian speed/thrash metallers Shadow Host is out now on Metalism Records. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered in Cosmos Studio by Arkady Navaho. Cover art comes courtesy of Alexander "Kwaadnar" Balinets. Stream all ten tracks of "Apocalyptic Symphony" from Shadow Host over at bandcamp.

Shadow Host was created at the end of 1993 by guitarist Alexey Arzamazov in Moscow. They became one of the first Russian bands to play melodic power/speed metal. Their debut release "Twilight Legend" came to light in 1997. Soon after their next release, "Neverland," an important event occurred which skyrocketed the band to a considerable new level - Shadow Host performed on Luzhniki arena as the opening act for their idols, Blind Guardian.

Performances with bands such as Grave Digger, Stratovarius and Nightwish followed. Shadow Host continued their concerts on large stages before foreign musicians: Edguy and Gamma Ray became the next milestones after the release of their third studio album, Curse Of The Angeleye in 2005. This album had already a much heavier feel.

The band's "Bringer Of Revenge" release from 2011 became the logical continuation from the predecessor. The music became even faster and more aggressive, and, in essence, turned to melodic thrash metal. Soon after the release of this album, the position behind the microphone was taken up by Alexey Markov (also Starsoup), the band started out on a tour and played several significant concerts, including being the opening act for the legendary thrashers Annihilator and Overkill.

At the start of 2013, Shadow Host released the EP "Demon Hunter" and, at the end of the year, a whole two releases: the EP "Lunacy Divine" and the follow-up full-length album "Apocalyptic Symphony."

Mekong Delta Unveils Details On New Album

German progressive thrash act Mekong Delta unveiled the album artwork and track list for the new album "In A Mirror Darkly." The album drops in Scandinavia on April 23rd, in Germany on April 25th, in Europe on April 28th and in the USA on April 29th through SPV/Steamhammer. The album will be made available as a CD, double gatefold LP with colored vinyl plus CD in cardboard sleeve and download.

According to the press release: "It's the hoped-for complex and ambitious album, and of course we wouldn't have accepted anything less from Mekong Delta. Like few other contemporary groups, the German progressive thrash metal band surrounding mastermind and bassist Ralf Hubert continues to stand for innovation and independence in 2014. All those looking for pure mainstream or mediocre muzak have to look elsewhere - Mekong Delta score again with their intelligence, unwillingness to compromise and courage."

The album picks up thematically where its 2010 predecessor "Wanderer On The Edge Of Time" left off. "For me, music doesn't start with A and end with Z, it's an ongoing process," Ralf Hubert explains. "In this respect, you could call In A Mirror Darkly the continuation of the Wanderer theme, but it's no copy, it's an independent recording. Each Mekong album sounds unique and forward-looking in the original sense of the term. As a composer, I consciously allow myself to drift to be able to consistently explore new horizons." More...

Earth Crisis Releases Lyric Video For New Track

The focal point of Salvation Of Innocents is aimed at ending human injustices towards animals and the environment in the ever-antagonistic Earth Crisis style, and as boldly exemplified in the brand new lyric video for the album's second of twelve massive tracks, "Out Of The Cages." Through underground activist footage the band's lyrical intent with the song is unquestionable, and their vibrant, modern tone is ultra apparent in the musical backdrop for of the video.

Stated guitarist Scott Crouse of the track, "'Out Of The Cages' is one of my favorite songs on Salvation... Everyone watch the lyric video, and do your homework, because it'll be a live set staple for sure."
