The Skull Signs With Tee Pee Records

The Skull - featuring original members Eric Wagner (vocals) and Jeff "Oly" Olson (drums) of American doom metal legends Trouble alongside longtime Trouble bassist Ron Holzner and Sacred Dawn guitarist Lothar Keller -- has inked a deal with Tee Pee Records.

The Skull recently recorded two songs with acclaimed producer / engineer Billy Anderson (Melvins, Neurosis), which will see the light of day this spring. "Sometime Yesterday Mourning" is a doomy metal song written by Keller, Holzner and Wagner that showcases the genre pioneers' distinct style while "The Last Judgement" is a "revisiting" of the classic Trouble song of the same name that originally appeared on the 1983 "Metal Massacre IV" compilation album.

"I think 'Sometime Yesterday Mourning' is the perfect song for The Skull to lead with and there's a reason why it was the first song we completed as a band," commented Wagner. "It's about coming to a point in life when it's just time for a new beginning, a fresh start if you will, and finally coming to terms with the past. Being that it is the 30th anniversary of the release of the song 'The Last Judgement' -- the first song we ever released -- we thought it fit perfectly for the B-side and considering what 'Sometime Yesterday Mourning' is about, it made sense to me. You have to go through your past to get to your future."

The Skull will follow the release of the new songs with a debut full length LP, tentatively slated for release this autumn.

"Callisto and Svart Records have agreed on a deal that will put the band’s fourth, yet-unnamed album out in November 2014. A long, nearly 12-year journey with Fullsteam Records has thus come to its end. It is also time to take new directions booking-wise.

Grifter Announces New Album Release

It’s been nearly three years since Grifter’s self-titled debut album was released on Ripple Music. Now in May of 2014 Grifter is set to release second album "The Return Of The Bearded Brethren" once again through Ripple Music. The label comments:

"Whereas the first album was a bunch of tracks the band had spanning their career up to that point the new album with written with one aim in mind: to write a killer album that would hit hard from start to finish yet contained songs that would kick arse in their own right. The Return Of The Bearded Brethren picks up where the debut left off but builds in every way from the quality of the song writing and playing boasting a fat production courtesy of Rich Robinson.

"The album, which will include many tales of Guinness, '70s sex symbols, drinking regrets, religious folly and more, is slotted for a May 2014 release. Additionally, look for Grifter live across the UK and maybe even the US."

The album was recorded in June 2013 at Big Red by Rich Robinson, mastered by Tony Reed at Heavy Head, and features cover artwork by Jamie Campbell. The track listing is as follows:

1. Black Gold
2. She Mountain
3. Paranoiac Blues
4. Princess Leia

Thothamon Signs To Domestic Genocide

Birmingham, Alabama traditional doom trio Thothamon recently joined goat horns with the eclectic sound peddlers at Domestic Genocide Records for the release of a new EP.

Fittingly titled "Prophets Of Doom," the analog offering was recorded in two six-hour sessions by Emanual Ellinas at Magnetic Audio Recordings Studio. The band also comments:

"We are very excited to be working with Domestic Genocide! For us, it looked like the right label to go to due to response we had heard from bands already on the label. It's a label that works with the artist and its design and intent for the art created. We also love how there are different styles of metal on the label ranging from black to doom to blackened doom to death. This is also a label that works very hard at promoting their bands through various outlets across the metal scene. The allegiance between Thothamon and Domestic Genocide is going to be full of doom and glory for everyone involved!"

Prong Unveils New Album

"Ruining Lives" will be Prong's follow-up to 2012 release "Carved Into Stone." The following press release was issued about the upcoming album:

"With Tommy Victor in the producer's chair and Steve Evetts (Hatebreed, Sick Of It All, Sepultura) once again coming in to put his trademark shine on the record, Ruining Lives has turned out to be a monster of an album.

"From the first riff-assault of the opener 'Turnover,' the album takes you on an angst-filled roller coaster ride that marries some very old school, Beg To Differ-elements with post-punk, industrial metal, hardcore thrash, all the while retaining a modern and current feel. Fans of the bands legendary, genre-defining Cleansing-era and new fans alike will be thrilled."

Tommy Victor also comments: "This is the fastest written and recorded Prong album ever and it has more great songs than any previous Prong record. I am particularly proud of the vocal performance and I think we captured some outstanding sounds on this album. There's a little bit of a throwback element here. Ruining Lives is almost a 'Force Fed' type of song. The album is a hybrid between NY Hardcore and some very modern, song oriented work. You will find some 'Rude Awakening' but also some solid, crushing riffs. I feel we have captured the best elements of Prong on this album." More...

The Oath Announces Self-Titled Album

The Oath will release a self-titled debut this coming April 15th via Rise Above Records. The label also issued the following press release:

"To master the dark and wring compelling creativity from its densest shadows requires vision, belief and, perhaps most importantly, a dash of synchronicity. These are all qualities that ooze from every pore of the debut album by The Oath.

"A band forged around the fizzing, feral chemistry between Swedish guitarist Linnea Olsson and German vocalist Johanna Sadonis, The Oath represent the wild magic that erupts when two blazing souls collide and fate is sent veering off course by sheer strength of the human will. This is heavy metal at its most mercurial and intuitive.

"Having found each other and discovered that their obsessions, desires and musical urges were utterly compatible and swiftly and irrevocably interwoven, Linnea and Johanna set about devising an artistic masterplan. The results of that plan are now primed to emerge, fully-formed and thrumming with primal energy and pristine passion, in the shape of The Oath: a nine-song clarion call that simultaneously recalls the hallowed greats of heavy rock, punk and metal - from Sabbath, Trouble and Angel Witch through to the Stooges and Poison Idea, and further to Mercyful Fate and Danzig - while revelling in new ways to express the spirit of those revered archetypes. Culture Club Releases Rare Death Metal Track

Back in 1983, the boy wonder Boy George and Culture Club released the Top 10 Hit "Karma Chameleon," which appeared on the "Colour By Numbers" album. To this day, it was the band's biggest hit and the pop sensation's only single to go #1 on the Billboard Top 100.

Little did anyone know that there existed an alternative death metal version. Little is known about this version of the song, but since it pre-dated Possessed's 1984 "Death Metal" demo (arguably the originators of death metal), then could Culture Club have actually invented death metal?

Actually, this version was created by the very talented Andy Rehfeldt who has been turning stuff on its ear for a long time now. This is just the latest in a series of classics (follow his YouTube Channel). Check it out here: More...
