Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 3

On the latest installment of Metalunderground.com's new official podcast, hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) gear up for a season of new metal by discussing some early 2014 releases.

00:02:25: After years of experimentation with mixed results, Sweden's The Haunted teased old school fans with the thrashy, aggressive three-song EP "Eye Of The Storm" (reviewed here). The digital 7' is the product of a revamped lineup that sees former vocalist Marco Aro and former drummer Adrian Erlandsson rejoin the fold.

00:19:45: Next up is the new EP "Clear" from Bethesda, Maryland's Periphery. The popular "djent" standard bearers crept out on a limb with this effort: each song is a solo composition by separate band members, allowing each to explore his own songwriting style, which distills the band's influences and various elements as a centrifuge would separate blood cells. "Clear" may encounter a split fan reaction, but as Kevin will warn you, it's to be taken not as a change in direction, but as an experimental exercise of freedom.

00:39:04: We wrap up with a lively overview of Behemoth's long-awaited new studio album "The Satanist" (reviewed here), which is already proving to be one of 2014's most-discussed and highest acclaimed metal releases.

Prizehog To Release New Album

Prizehog will release third full-length album "Re-Unvent The Whool" on March 4th via Eolian Empire on digital download and 180 gram vinyl. Pre-orders are available at this location.

The street date will be celebrated early at a hometown record release gala on February 28th at Portland's The Know, sharing the stage with Thrones and Polst. Prizehog is currently scheduling a full U.S. tour for May, with those dates to be released in the coming weeks.

Eolian Empire also issued the following press release about the band:

"Prizehog, the mind-bending Portland-by-way-of-the-Bay-Area trio, exists on their own cosmic plane. Combining meditative grooves, punishing sludge, dazzling melodies, ultra-heavy psych, and crunchy riffs aplenty using a baffling and impossibly cryptic calculus, the outfit has created its own bizarro universe of heaviness.

"Re-Unvent the Whool, Prizehog's third full-length release, is a magnificent, powerful LP; a byzantine labyrinth of impenetrable riffs, crushing dirges, heavy hooks, and warped excursions wrapped up in triumphant progressions made complete with downshifted bellows and dark cries; perplexing and mystifying yet grand, spellbinding, enthralling, and uncannily soulful. "Following on from last year's critically acclaimed 'His Best Deceit' demo, Belgian black/death cult Possession returns with a highly anticipated 7" EP, cryptically titled Anneliese. Fans and critics worldwide thrilled to the feral, bloodlusting violence across His Best Deceit, but here on the two-song Anneliese 7", Possession boldly prove that their diabolic force extends into more haunting realms.

Entrails Recruits New Guitarist

After three albums and a whole lot of live shows with Entrails, guitar player Mathias has decided to leave the band for personal reasons. The band comments:

"It has been growing a while within the band so we decided to do what's better for the band and recruit a new member that can handle the axe of death in the future. Mathias is still our best friend and we wish him the best of luck in his other projects in life."

But there's no rest for the wicked! Entrails didn't hesitate at all and recruited Pontus "Penki" Samuelsson, a talented headbanging young blood of 19 years that can be heard in other Swedish bands like Void and Gravestone.

Pontus has already been on stage with Entrails last year at Extremefest as a stand-in for Mathias so he knows what it's all about: "I've been a huge fan of Entrails for many years, so it's a great honor for me to be a part of the band. Having played live with the guys once before, I knew this was something I wanted to continue doing. When they asked me to join, I was more than ready to be a part of the beast that is Entrails! I can't wait to see you all on the road. Skål!" More...

Delain Comments On New Album's Themes

Delain's Charlotte Wessels has checked in with the following statement about the band's new album:

“The title 'The Human Contradiction' is taken from one of my favorite books; Octavia E. Butlers trilogy Lilith’s Brood. A post-apocalypse story, in which the fact that humanity did not last is explained by our two most contradictory qualities; the fact that we are as a species both intelligent and hierarchic.

"This human contradiction causes an ‘us versus the others’ mentality, which in the book - as well as one could argue, in reality - proves to be a most self-destructive attitude. In a way, 'The Human Contradiction' presents a broadening and deepening of the lyrical concept of We Are The Others: ‘otherness’ and how people relate to this, has had my interest for years. Whether it is otherness within our species, so towards people who are perceived as ‘different’ by other people (which was 'We Are The Others' main focus) or in our attitudes towards non-human ‘others’, which is the lyrical addition made by our new record.”

"The Human Contradiction" will be released in North America on April 8th via Napalm Records and the album's track listing is as follows:

1. Here Come the Vultures
2. Your Body is a Battleground
3. Stardust
4. My Masquerade
5. Tell Me, Mechanist
6. Sing to Me
7. Army of Dolls
8. Lullaby

Yob Signs With Neurot

Neurot Recordings is pleased to welcome long-running Eugene, Oregon-based doom metal trio Yob to the label's roster.

The band -- founding vocalist/guitarist Mike Scheidt, drummer Travis Foster and bassist Aaron Rieseberg -- will release a seventh studio offering this Fall, preceded by an appearance at the illustrious Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands in April.

Comments Scheidt of the recent union, "YOB is very happy to have signed to Neurot for our new album. Travis, Aaron and I agree that Neurosis is the epitome of forward-thinking heavy music, made with zero compromise. Our love for their music is total. Neurot's dedication to putting out uncompromising music is no different. To have this opportunity to put an album out on their label is an honor that runs deep. We cannot wait to share our new music with Neurot and our friends worldwide."

Neurosis' Steve Von Till notes, "This was meant to be. Neurot has always sought out to work with those who share in the purification of spirit through sound and who harvest their sound from originality and intensity. When I listen to YOB, see them leave it all on the stage, or share a conversation with them about life, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that they embody what Neurot stands for completely and we are so very honored that we get the opportunity to work together with them on their next album."

Adds Scott Kelly, "YOB, as with all things that actually matter, there is only one. They have built their temple with a foundation concreted in absolute truth. The truth is the riffs, the truth is in the delivery, it's in the unwavering commitment, and in the handshake and the look in their eyes. If you don't know them, then you are fucking up your own lifes' truth. There's is nothing heavier on the face of this earth than this band. The Neurot Family is honored to be a part of legacy of this, the monolithic treasure of sonic achievement that is YOB."

Further details on Yob's forthcoming new release are to be unveiled in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

To-Mera Going On Hiatus

U.K. prog metal outfit To-Mera has checked in with the following announcement about going on hiatus:

"We have much news to bear. As is often the case with 'news', some of it is good, and some of it less good.

"The less good news, as some of you may have gathered, is that we have put To-Mera on ice for the time being. Essentially, now is the time for each of us to focus on various other things in our lives, be they other bands and projects or just life in general, and as anyone who is or has been in a band will know, things only work properly when everyone is on the same page. Until that day....

".... the GOOD news for To-Mera fans is that the core creative forces behind the band's music from the very beginning have been using this down-time to pour their energies into not just one but TWO brand new projects over the past 6 months or so.

"Project no.1 is a collaborative venture between Tom and Julie, featuring symphonic film-score soundscapes and atmospheres blended with quirky jazz-rock grooves and serene vocals. More...

"Many thanks to all the promoters that booked us, without you we would still be sitting in our bunker rehearsing. I'm very sorry the shows we had hoped to do in Mexico, South America, Japan and Australia never happened. I was looking forward to those very much... More...
