Insense will join Devin Townsend Project dates as support in Scandinavia this March, with tickets available at this location. Dates are as follows:
Mar 10 Debaser Medis – Stockholm, Sweden
Mar 11 KB – Malmö, Sweden
Mar 13 Pakkahuone – Tampere, Finland
Mar 14 The Circus – Helsinki, Finland
Indie Recordings also comments:
"Insense is something of a well-kept secret in the Norwegian metal scene. While the country is renowned for its black metal, Insense has steered away anything remotely close to corpse paint and Satan worshiping in monochrome forests. Their sound is all their own. They’ve been compared to everything from Machine Head to Dillinger Escape Plan, from Pantera to Strapping Young Lad, from Slipknot to Meshuggah. The truth is, while of course being huge fans of all the aforementioned, Insense doesn’t sound like any of them.
"Insense started out as a technical metal outfit in 1999 and has slowly but surely refined their sound, via a very aggressive second record, to the more modern Insense sound of technically impressive riffs and melodic desperation. With ever growing confidence, Insense presents De:Evolution, the fifth installment with 14 tracks of desperate aggression."
Danish hard rockers Malrun have just signed a new deal with the Swedish record label ViciSolum Productions and will release a 3rd album on August 29th, 2014. The label comments:
"For the past couple of months Malrun has been in close dialogue with several European record labels and ended up signing with ViciSolum Productions that offered the exact right mix of dedication, commitment and ambition in process of launching Malrun to the next level.
"Since the release of 'The Empty Frame' in 2012, Malrun has continuously built up a growing fan base and is now returning with an even more melodic, aggressive, groovy, and powerful album. Malrun toured a lot in Europe in 2012 and 2013 with bands such as Tremonti, Emil Bulls etc., and the intensive experiences with the European live audience has this time been incorporated directly in the creative writing process for the new album in order to make the music even more accessible/effectful.
"The band has once again teamed up with the experienced producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Amaranthe) who has produced, mixed, and mastered the album. This time around, the collaboration band and producer pressed each other out of former comfort zones in order to forge an even more forceful and heavy sound to support the more aggressive, yet melodic musical ventures of the new album.
"Fans of Malrun will not have to wait long for new music though. The 1st single, 'Justine,' will be released already March 14th, and a music video for the 2nd single 'Cycle of Abuse' is scheduled for release in June.
"Malrun expects to support the new album with summer festivals as well as tours throughout fall 2014 and spring 2015, so stay tuned for updates." More...

"As we are mixing and finally received all of the guest vocals here's a little announcement for you all. We had the pleasure to have our friends Vince from The Acacia Strain and Phlegethon from Wormed lay down some guest vocals on the album and it turned out way sick! Get ready for the most brutal and shredtastic Aborted album to date!" More...

March 31st has been set as the international release date for Ceremonial's "Ars Magicka" 7" EP via Blood Harvest. The cover artwork and track listing are available below, and the following press release was issued about the band:
"Chile's Ceremonial was spawned in early 2010 from the ashes of previous native black metal projects and their undying need for creating metal. The band was formed and named by Imprecator (guitar/bass) and Lucifago (vocals/guitar). Not long after, Bliol (ex-Gorhoth) joined on drums and completed Ceremonial's first unlight trinity.
"Soon afterwards, Yelworc(k) (Ereshkigal, Hell’s Veins) joined the circle on bass guitar and fully completed the band. Ceremonial's main aim is to crush and mock the origins of ignorance, create original occult lyrics, and the magickal execution of hermetic black/thrash metal. They do so, with iron-fisted force, on a brand-new, hellthrashing 7" entitled Ars Magicka. Across their two preceding demos, Ceremonial may have shown lethal potential, but here on Ars Magicka, they explode with diabolic force: four songs of cruel, chaotic mastery."

The mighty Behemoth is out now with latest album "The Satanist" (reviewed here), which was named our most anticipated album of the year.
Behemoth was also recently covered in our Sunday Old School column as part of "black metal history month."
In a recent interview with Ghost Cult, Behemoth's Nergal discussed the new album, as well as the state of metal today.
An excerpt from the interview follows:
Extreme art should be shocking and provoke a reaction. I really hope we are viewed as more than just a black metal band. We are an extreme band that can communicate our ideas on so many levels. Extreme metal music these days is often only extreme by definition. It is a never-ending process of striving for perfection. Too many bands are chasing this and the scene is becoming like the X-Factor for black metal. There is no danger and unpredictability anymore.
The majority of death metal bands from the U.S.A are so generic, they all sound perfect. It is fast and technical but there is no substance. Bands forget about emotion when they strive for perfection. You should be driven by your intuition and not just be concerned with shredding on your guitar. Perfection is boring and uninspiring. When people listen to "The Satanist," it will stimulate them in many different ways.
I saw Cabaret at the theatre recently and it was extremely moving. Extreme art must make people uncomfortable whether it is music, art or films. It has to be thought provoking. It takes a lot of energy for me to do this. I remember after my transplant when we started playing shows again. There was a time I thought I was going to pass out on-stage because it was so taxing playing the show and I did not have as much energy as before but now I am ready. I know I can give my all to this.More...

Portuguese experimental death metallers Colosso today unveil the brand new music video for "Ecosystem" via Blank TV. Check it out below.
Directed by Raquel Lemos, filmed by Raquel Lemos and Elsa dos Santos, and edited by Ines Amaral, "Ecosystem" is taken from the most recent Colosso record "Thallium." Founding member, vocalist, and guitarist Max Tomé comments:
“We chose ‘Ecosystem’ because it's the song that best represents ‘Thallium.’ ‘Ecosystem’ combines most elements of Colosso: catchy riffs, dark soundscapes, intense vocals and technical riffing. Our goal with the video was to have fast and intense camera shooting and respect the song's dark atmosphere by using very little colour.” More...
Downfall of Gaia is happy to have found a new drummer after the departure of former member Hannes. The band comments:
"We are very happy to announce that our good friend Michael Kadnar from New York will be the new face behind the drums of Downfall of Gaia and all of us couldn't be more excited to have him on board!
"We got to know Mike on our last tour through the United States with his other band Black Table and the chemistry just felt right! Around that time we had no idea that we will meet up again so soon! It might sound weird to some people to add a drummer from New York to a band that's based in Germany, but for us it feels like the right and best decision! Plans for 2014 have been made and the flights have been booked! Some amazing stuff is coming up in the next couple of months and we are looking forward to a new chapter! The songwriting for a new record will start in a few weeks and a new record can be expected for later this year!"
Comments Michael Kadnar: "I was fortunate enough to tour the US opening for Downfall of Gaia with my band Black Table in summer 2013. Both bands had really good chemistry and we kept in touch after the tour was over. When I heard that Downfall was looking for a drummer, I emailed Peter and jokingly said 'I'm your guy, fly me out haha.' Our conversation quickly got serious when Peter said the search wasn't going too well and proceeded to ask me if I was interested in being their touring drummer. After the initial shock wore off, I gladly accepted, and after a few more conversations they decided to bring me on as a full time member. I'm very excited and it's an absolute pleasure to have the opportunity to write and perform with these talented Gentlemen!"

Arkansas act The Overseer will release sophomore album, "Rest and Let Go," on March 4th via Solid State Records.
"Rest and Let Go" finds the band re-teaming with Matt McClellen at Glow in the Dark Studios, where The Overseer also recorded the 2012 debut, "We Search, We Dig." You can hear the new song "Fragile Wings" below, or pre-order the album at this location.
The album centers itself around the concept of death. “It kinda creeps its way into everyone's life at some point, and it found a way to creep into our record,” says guitarist/vocalist Darren King. “Death is such a big part of life and unfortunately we've had our fair share of dealing with it. I guess that's just where a few of us were and are.” More...
Dark Tranquillity has stayed busy since releasing "Construct" last year. Among this promotion is a tour with Darkane (support in Sweden) and Tristinia in 2013 and the heavy metal cruise, 70,000 Tons of Metal at the beginning of this year. The group is currently travelling throughout North America with Omnium Gatherum and Exmortus in support.
Although At The Gates, In Flames and Dissection appeared in North American venues before their Gothenburg brethren, DT has proved the most enduring. In addition to maintaining the same core members since the beginning, DT has (arguably) remained closer to its original sound than these titanic artists, albeit a denser, more synthetic version than heard upon onset. Goth/industrial sounds have pushed aside black and death metal tendencies. Still, the band acknowledges the worth of these early recordings, as evidenced streaming their first two recordings "Skydancer" and "Of Chaos And Eternal Night" on Bandcamp.
This topic as extensive travel plans, new tour merch, rejoicing with In Flame's alumni and the lasting effect of early recordings are addressed in the following interview with guitarist/artist/core member, Niklas Sundin. More...
Last month we broke the news that Insain was due to release a new EP this coming March, but unfortunately the band has now announced this release will be its last.
A new teaser trailer for the EP can be seen below, courtesy of Metal Injection, and Kaotoxin Records also comments on the band's breakup:
"That's really heavy-hearted but yet with an absolute pride, that we have to announce that one of the Kaotoxin artists is no more as Insain decided to split up a little while before that brand new, and consequently posthumous, EP we'll release on March 11th (preorders start this Tuesday!).
"Proud for them, for what's been achieved and for such an absolutely brilliant and boundaries-pushing, brutal, fast, dark and heavy as balls new release that's gonna be the legacy of how awesome and will always be the band and its releases.
"Proud of that particular release too, as it's a real 'family' work like we love them at Kaotoxin: remember We All Die (laughing)'s feat. on Eye Of Solitude's 'The Deceit,' Déhà of WAD(L) feat. on Colosus' 'Blestem' SideBlasts Series release, Laurent of Drawers producing the latest Nolentia full-length and so on. Between the Buried and Me has posted a behind-the-scenes clip online, which can be viewed below, and the band also comments:
"We just launched a new video on our YouTube, giving a little insight into the 'behind the scenes' of a live show. This was taken on our fall headline tour. We're heading out on another headline tour in 13 days, hitting parts of US and Canada, and hope to see you all out there!
"The video was produced, filmed and directed by Raymond McCrea Jones & Wes Richardson, with editing done by Raymond McCrea Jones, and visual FX by Wes Richardson."

"City Of Dust," the debut full-length release from Arizona's anarcho-sludge faction Godhunter, is now less than two weeks from deliverance.
The fifty-minute politically-antagonizing concept album unleashing the band's most musically diverse and lyrically thought-provoking anthems yet. Today you can hear the new track "Snake Oil Dealer" below, courtesy of Noisey.Vice.com. The following press release was also issued about the stream:
"Killer reactions to 'City Of Dust' are showing up from around the globe, Godhunter's gritty but moody blend of harsh crust/punk persuasion to their craft a welcome change of pace from some of the more practiced contemporary deliveries of sludge metal. Among the stoned-out dirges on the ever-morphing tectonic surge of City Of Dust, one of the instant stand-out tracks is the fourth of the album's eight; the venomous 'Snake Oil Dealer.'
"Uncoiling over nearly seven and-a-half slow-burning minutes, the agony of the band's tonal crush is soaked with some of the most ethereal Moog-driven atmospherics of the album, in addition bearing some of the members' brutally-honest, confrontational views on their home state's governmental downfalls.
"The band released a statement on the lyrical basis of the song, aimed at some of the specific politicians, bills and propaganda they feel are deliberately to blame in recent years, some of which has been posted alongside an exclusive listen to the track via Vice Magazine's music channel, Noisey." Greek symphonic death metal band Septicflesh recently completed work on an upcoming new album, which will follow the 2011 album "The Great Mass" (reviewed here).
Now the band has posted a trailer online teasing the album and the band's new logo, which can be seen below and was created by Constantinos Kilaris and Corn Studio. The album is due out this summer, and the band comments:
"We are really exhausted from the work on this record, but also very proud of the results. We worked very hard with producer Logan Mader to bring you the ultimate death metal soundtrack for your darkest dreams. The compositions are progressive with a lot of emotional peaks, while at the same time the songs sound very aggressive and powerful. We also had the chance to work for the first time with a full children choir beside the regular adult choir, and that helped us dive deeper into darker cinematic atmospheres. We have achieved a new level of extreme emotions.” More...
Black metal quartet Heron has become the latest signing of newly formed record label Giant MKT. The North Carolina natives will drop two-track EP “Sacrifice” on February 25th as a limited edition 7”.
“Sacrifice” is now available to pre-order via Giant MKT here and you can check out a track from the release below. The label also comments:
"Since their inception in late 2012, Heron has presented a black metal sound that has seen the four-piece begin to make a name for themselves in the North Carolina scene. Musically, the band’s sound presents an interpretation of the duality between ‘the raw bleakness of modern existence and the consoling environment they are steadily losing touch with.'
"Taking influence from bands such as Enslaved, Darkthrone and Emperor, 'Sacrifice' depicts the contrast between the tranquility of nature and the harsh realities of modern life, which inspires the band to explore a highly original sound, taking elements of doom and progressive set over the back drop of black metal.
"Having played a multitude of shows throughout North Carolina and neighboring states in 2013, Heron will continue to build on the momentum of their new record deal with a run of tours showcasing the EP throughout 2014 and into the Summer. The first of these comes in the form of April’s East Coast tour with Dreaded." More...

“The amazing attention of Garth Richardson! That makes me feel very, very special.” More...
I woke up with a four alarm hangover….it was my birthday! For the second year in a row, I just couldn’t believe that I would spend it in such “majesty on the seas” with bands I admire and musicians I worship. I rose after just 4 ½ hours and reached for the knife that felt buried in my left temple. A quick look out the porthole of the room revealed a cloudy, foggy and rainy day. I stumbled to the shower and managed to get ready for the first show – Atrocity on the pool deck. I took the elevator to floor 11 to get some breakfast and I peaked through the back stage door (just out the elevator) and the rain was torrential. Ok…how is this going to work? More...
Mantar is currently stream the entirety of debut album, "Death By Burning," which can be heard below thanks to Terrorizer Magazine.
The album is being released today by Svart Records on CD, LP, tape, and digital formats. The following press release was also issued:
"Mantar manages to sound even heavier than most five-piece bands you may know, in spite of the fact that no bass guitar was used on Death by Burning - just drums and guitar set for destruction. Forget about rock 'n' roll: this will hurt. Flogging beats and blackened melodies meet feedback orgies and doom mayhem - early Melvins, Motorhead, Darkthrone, you name it. Don't call it sludge, though. Everything as black as possible, a soundtrack for the final battle. " More...

Disbanded German metal act Black Dragon will see its 1982 debut album "Heavy Metal Intoxication" reissued via Kathargo Records (distributed by Pure Steel Records) on March 14th, 2014. The preorder phase will start on February 28th, 2014 at the label's online shop.
According to the press release: "One of the most wanted Heavy Metal-LPs in Germany is without doubt 'Heavy Metal Intoxication' from Black Dragon. Made in 1982 in an edition of only 200 pieces, the intention of the band seemed to be producing a rarity for future generations. It’s difficult to find another reason why the band did nothing to support their really fine album. The 8 songs convince with rough vocals combined with remarkable hooks showing a lot of NWOBHM-influences. Yes, that’s exactly what's in demand today. So 'Heavy Metal intoxication' one of the few undiscovered pearls in Heavy Metal!"
The track list for "Heavy Metal Intoxication" is:
1. Born for Solution
2. Drifting with the Hunter
3. Atonal Attention
4. Strange Kind of Love

Triptykon's second album, "Melana Chasmata" (rough translation: "black, deep depressions/valleys") will be released on April 14 (Europe) and April 15 (North America), 2014, via Century Media Records/Prowling Death Records Ltd.
Like its predecessor "Eparistera Daimones," the album was produced by Triptykon's singer/guitarist Tom Gabriel Warrior and guitarist V. Santura and recorded and mixed at V. Santura's own Woodshed Studio in southern Germany as well as at Triptykon's rehearsal facilities in Zurich, Switzerland, in 2013 and 2014. Those who have already heard "Melana Chasmata" have described it as "atmospheric, dark, diabolical, and dramatic", "diverse, epic, and doomy, but on an entirely different level", "a fierce boulder of abhorrence", or "very heavy and yet very aesthetic at the same time".
"Melana Chasmata" will feature the following nine songs, at a playing time of around 67 minutes:
1. Tree Of Suffocating Souls
2. Boleskine House
3. Altar Of Deceit
6. Demon Pact
7. In The Sleep Of Death
8. Black Snow
Further new Triptykon music has been recorded, to be released as an EP or mini album later in 2014 or early in 2015.
Among other formats, the album will be released as a 32-page mediabook (with lyrics and liner notes to every song, and with a special fold out poster), as a gatefold vinyl double album (with posters and large-format booklet), and for digital download. Additionally, Century Media is scheduled to issue a special box set, limited to 2000 copies. The box set will include the album, a Triptykon silver pendant, a poster, postcards, a Triptykon tote bag, and a cap. More...
