Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 1
In the second installment (and first official episode) of the new Metalunderground.com podcast, web wizard Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and writer Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) cap off the old year by dissecting our official "best-of" lists and bantering about their own favorite albums of 2013.
Last time, we promised that the next episode would be far shorter. We lied; it's still pretty long. When reviewing an entire year of music, sometimes metalheads can't help themselves. Please bear with us as Kevin and Mike work on managing their time more efficiently.
However, if you find the time, and find the idea of listening to two complete strangers waffling on about Carcass, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Living Sacrifice, Protest The Hero, and In Flames (to name just a few) appealing, then crack open a beer and enjoy.
Big thanks to Belgian symphonic black/death metallers Herfst for providing our intro music. You can download Herfst's music here and visit their official Facebook page here. You can check out the podcast episode by clicking the link below.

Best Metal Newcomers Of 2013 Explored, Part 1
Each year in our annual metal awards we take a look at the best “newcomers” – those bands that released debut full-lengths worth your time.
In addition to the standard slew of burgeoning metal bands getting their footing in 2013, there were several new projects created by established members of the scene that dropped some of the best albums of the year.
To help get you acquainted with the best new talent releasing albums you may have missed, we’ll be looking at each of the bands nominated for the “best newcomer” category by our staff. Today content manager xFiruath covers Witherscape (which ended up winning the category in our 2013 awards), Gloryhammer, and Cnoc an Tursa.
Witherscape
An instance of the champ coming out of retirement to show the young pups how things are done, Witherscape marks the return of European metal legend Dan Swano, who has spent the last several years behind the sound board instead of in front of the microphone.
Rather than going in the direction of his various ‘90s projects, this band is essentially a progressive death metal outing, with some strong classic metal leanings. “The Inheritance” was an album I greatly enjoyed on first listen, and have only come to appreciate even more over time, to the point it’s now among my most played metal on any given week.
To find out more about Witherscape, you can read our interview with Dan Swano, or check out my original review of the album right here.

Savage Messiah frontman Dave Silver comments:
"The title for this song comes from a famous saying by Ghandi, who said that even if you're in a minority of one, the truth is the truth. Which is a good message to people about breaking the mould and not getting sucked into 'group think' mentality. Standing up for what's objectively right and not compromising for the sake of social acceptance. Musically, this is my favourite Savage Messiah track ever; we've managed to marry the thrash and heavy metal elements into a cohesive track, which is catchy and melodic, but still fast and thrashy. Enjoy!" More...

Bloodlet Reissues Coming In February
The A389 Recordings X Bash is upon us this weekend, with dozens of bands and thousands of fans converging upon Baltimore, Maryland in celebration of the label's first full ten years in existence.
Among the vast roster of warriors set to perform, one of the headlining highlights of the fest is the one-time reunion of Florida's metalcore pioneers, Bloodlet.
Directly following the initial confirmation of the band's reformation for the Bash, A389 also announced the upcoming release of two recordings from Bloodlet, both of which are now locked for release on February 7th. The label comments:
"Their inventive, ominous style of swamp-born metalcore is relived once again on the recently unearthed and 1994 demo track, 'Embrace,' recorded alongside the band's archetypal 'Shell' and 'Cheribum' tracks, yet was never released. The lost track was discovered by hardcore webzine XStuckInThePastX and shared the masters with A389 Recordings, who will unleash an official 7" single of the track, now available for preorder on red or black wax with a B-side etching of the magic circle.
"The same day, A389 will dispatch a special reissue of Bloodlet's landmark debut LP, Entheogen, which Victory Records initially released in early 1996. Through the direct cooperation with Victory, the new edition of the mighty Entheogen will see a deluxe 2xLP pressing, for the first time ever delivering the seminal release on wax in its complete and correct playing sequence, fully remastered at Audiosiege and spread across two 12" records cut at 45 RPM for optimum sound quality. This deluxe reissue also features a huge 24"x36" poster insert of Aaron Turner's (Isis) incredible cover artwork, and is being released as a one-time pressing of 1000 copies to coincide with the band's solitary reunion at the A389 Recordings X Anniversary Bash." Lacuna Coil Announces New Album, Release Date
Lacuna Coil is proud to announce that the band's new studio release will be entitled "Broken Crown Halo" and is set for release on March 31st (EU, Australia/NZ) and April 1st (North America) via Century Media Records. The album is the band's seventh studio effort, and the highly-anticipated follow-up to "Dark Adrenaline" (see review here).
Lacuna Coil were joined in their native Italy by producer Jay Baumgardner (P.O.D., Sevendust, Evanescence, Papa Roach) and engineer Kyle Hoffmann (P.O.D., Bush, Zebrahead). The album was mastered by Howie Weinberg (Rammstein, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Deftones and Sheryl Crow). More details on the album artwork and track listing are expected soon.
The band commented on the new album:
"What conflict could run so deep that it takes you to the deepest corners of your inner world? Today we are surrounded by a lot of lies, aliases, and people acting like they are wearing an invisible crown - but you better have thick skin if you want to wear this crown! 'Broken Crown Halo' is a cinematic album that could be the soundtrack of our days - it is a dark vision of a near future when survival is second nature, and failure is not something to be avoided, but rather cultivated with lessons learned along the way.
"We set the bar pretty high with 'Dark Adrenaline' and it hasn't been easy bringing our sound to the next level, but we have lived, learned and grown through a year full of personal issues and changes. We learned to be strong and get stronger, and we felt an inner vibe in this band that we haven't felt before. We locked ourselves in an age-old studio in Milan, Italy, where history was strong and the past met with our future, vintage gear and the influence of classic Italian horror movies and bands like Goblin meeting the fresh and rough sounds of the modern world with unique and invigorating results. 'Broken Crown Halo' is Lacuna Coil introducing a new order, and letting nothing stand in our way..." More...

Prematory To Release Sophomore LP
Belgian thrash act Prematory announced the impending release of the second album "Corrupting Influence" on February 24th via Punishment 18 Records (distributed in the U.S. via CM Distro). The band was founded in 2007 by Joeri Trescinski (bass), Joeri Van De Schoot (guitar) and Thomas Minnen (drums). After adding Simon Duson (vocals) to the group in late 2008, their first full line up was completed.
The band would work on their material during the following two years. The studio sessions for the first album were booked shortly after adding Jonas Van De Sande (guitar) to the line up.
Their debut studio release "Suiciety" came out near the end of 2010. It was well received by the online press and resulted in support slots for bands such as Warbringer, F.K.U. and Dr. Living Dead. The band grew out to be a well known act in the Belgian underground scene and the first shows in neighboring countries such as Germany and The Netherlands were confirmed as well.
Work on the second album started shortly after releasing "Suiciety." Stronger and more professional songs were created and the bar was set much higher for the next release. A line up switch occurred halfway during the writing process. Thomas Minnen was forced to quit the band and a new drummer, Thomas Wuyts, was brought in to continue his work.
At the end of 2012, Prematory felt that they were ready to record the second release. They contacted Sven Janssens (ex-Aborted) from the Red Left Hand studio to handle the producing and mixing. The album was recorded in February 2013 and was sent to Chris “Zeuss” Harris (Suffocation, Soulfly, Hatebreed…) from the Planet Z Studio to master the album.
"Corrupting Influence" marks the band’s evolution to a more unique mature sound and takes the listener on an aggressive journey about global, social and political problems in modern society.
The track list is:
1. Sledgehammer
2. Insignificance
3. Down the Drain
4. Hold My Breath
5. Toxic Experiment
