Pit Stories: Learning A Painful Lesson

Each week we check in with bands from around the globe to get their most memorable Pit Stories. This week If These Trees Could Talk shared this tale of learning a valuable lesson about removing your earrings before entering the pit:

When I was young, I went to every metal festival known to mankind, regardless of who was playing. In my youth, I felt invincible, therefore every mosh pit was open season. In the summer of 2000, I attended the Tattoo the Earth Festival with Slipknot and Sevendust. In my naivete, I had a row of ear piercings down each side.

In the middle of Slipknot’s set, I decided to test my might and enter the pit. Slipknot pits are always rowdy, and I was fully aware of the danger that lurked within, but I didn’t give a fuck. I was ready to rage! Unbeknownst to me, a dude in the biggest combat boots I’d ever seen was crowd surging right above me. As I looked up, his boot came down and grinded every earring out of my adolescent ear at once. Extreme pain, blood and adrenaline all at once. This experience never turned me off from mosh pits, but it reminded me to take them out before going into one for the rest of my life.

Orakle Signs With Apathia Records

After two albums released in 2005 ("Uni aux cimes") and 2008 ("Tourments & Perdition"), Orakle had disappeared from the scene, but 2015 will mark the return of the French metallers, with a long-awaited third album and a signing on Apathia Records.

Entitled "Éclats," this new chapter was produced by the band, mixed at Henosis studios by Frédéric Gervais, and mastered by Bruno Gruel / Elektra Mastering.

Many years of work have been necessary for Orakle to achieve a very personal and audacious album, where the sophisticated black metal of the band's beginning merges with a tortuous and experimental metal, but also with progressive rock and exclusively French lyrics.

"Éclats" will be released on May 11th via Apathia Records, with pre-orders starting on February 16th. Stay tuned for more details.

Dirty Shirt Unveils New Album Artwork

Dirty Shirt today reveals the cover from upcoming album, "Dirtylicious," crafted by the Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu (Twilight13Media). The following press release was also issued:

"Dirtylicious promises to be one of the most interesting and groundbreaking releases on the Romanian and European metal stage. The band managed to build a completely new musical vocabulary, based on a sonic skeleton made up of Dirty Shirt's unique blend of genres.

"Even if we encounter the first experiments with this brand of fusion metal on the previous releases of the band, which included hits like 'Bad Apples,' 'Freak Show,' or 'Saraca Inima Me,' 'Dirtylicious' will take everything a step further. The album is built on folk elements, and the studio sessions were done with artists who are masters of traditional instruments, like violin, clarinet, accordion, dulcimer and many more. Together, these musicians form the Transylvanian Folkcore Orchestra." More...

Biotoxic Warfare Streaming "Lobotomized"

In order to whet appetites for new music, Biotoxic Warfare has released a single from upcoming album "Lobotomized," which will release this coming Monday January 19th via Slaney Records.

The track, also named "Lobotomized," is a meaty introduction to Biotoxic Warfare's debut full-length release. The band also comments:

“The sound of ‘Lobotomized’ is mostly influenced by the European thrash metal scene (Kreator, Sodom) with a mix of old school American death metal (Obituary, Death, Morbid Angel). It also combines dark melodies, shredding guitar solos, technical riffing and many well-combined fragments of the whole extreme metal spectrum.

“Lyrically the album opposes strictly to any religious fanatics and cults who use their lies to control every human being with ambitions to reign upon arrogance and false reality created by religions worldwide since the dawn of time. The lyrics call the people to rise against their oppressors, stand out for what they believe and break the chains that bond both mind and soul.” More...

Griever To Release Debut Album

Vitriol Records kicks off 2015 with the February 24th release of Griever's debut full-length, "Our Love Is Different."

From San Diego, Griever features vocalist/guitarist Alex Jacobelli and drummer Cory Groenenberg, both members of former Deathwish Inc. hardcore punkers Lewd Acts.

In Griever, Jacobelli belts out world-weary gruffness and lights up the skies with radiant guitars, while Groenenberg drives forward, steady and straight as a tunnel-borer. Along with guitarist guitarist Orlando Ramirez and bassist Wes Sisk, they pound out an impassioned racket – a heavy, rock-solid version of post-hardcore that pummels and uplifts, equally – inspired by the melodic sludge of the Melvins-Karp-Floor-Torche circle as well as the garage punk scene epitomized by hometown San Diego label Swami Records.

"Our Love Is Different" was recorded by Tommy Garcia and Alex Jacobelli at SDRL and Thrill Me Studios, and mixed by Jacobelli at Thrill Me. The album was mastered by Nick Zampiello (Converge, Coliseum) at New Alliance. The track listing is:

1. A Somber Psalm
2. Malice
3. The Tie That Grinds
4. Hell in Heel
5. Our Love Is Different
6. Decline of the West
7. The Endless Wall
8. King of Ash

Sarpanitum Streaming New Track

"Blessed Be My Brothers" is the imminent new full-length from atmospheric blackened death metal strategists Sarpanitum, who feature within their rants current and former affiliates of Mithras, Lantlos, and Tenebrous Aeon.

The ten-track follow-up to 2011's "Fedelium" EP, Sarpanitum's "Blessed Be My Brothers" was composed over a two-year period, tracked at Dreaming Studios U.K. by drummer Leon Macey (Contrarian, Mithras, The Senseless et al) and delivers a delightfully diseased fusion of traditional death metal, blackened riff onslaughts, and twisted melodic atmospheres all centered on the abysmal consequence of religious warfare.

In celebration of its approaching release via Willowtip Records next month, today the brutality dealers at Decibel Magazine offer up fourth cut, "Glorification Upon The Powdered Bones Of The Sundered Dead," for public consumption and cerebral intoxication. Listen in below.

Guitarist/bassist Tom Hyde elaborates of the consuming ode, "'Glorification...' is an epitome of Sarpanitum which is fast, ancient, atmospheric, brutal death metal with a blackened edge. Expect to be bombarded by blastbeats, pulverized by kick drums, ripped apart by relentless guitars, ascending to divinity by glorious choirs, tremble in the presence of enormous immortal vocals and provoked by imperial, majestic leads and harmonies."

Adds vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Tom Innocenti of the tune's concept, "The song is about an unspecified individual who awakes in the aftermath of battle. Musically and lyrically it reflects the emotional impact of surviving and the crippling guilt that resides in most of those who would escape death." More...

Dødheimsgard Releasing New Album

Dødheimsgard has completed work on a fifth album, titled "A Umbra Omega" and set for release on March 17th via Peaceville Records.

The first fruits of DHG's re-animated labor manifest in the shape of this new studio album with original co-founding member Aldrahn (Thorns/The Deathtrip) making a return to the asylum on vocal duties alongside Vicotnik's exquisite and unconventional compositions and structures.

"A Umbra Omega" is DHG's first album since 2007's "Supervillain Outcast" opus, and undoubtedly marks the band's most challenging work to date; twisted, technical, sprawling epics and an inverted outlook on existence from the depths of band mastermind/writer/producer, Vicotnik, with similarities drawn to previous classic DHG works such as "666 International" and "Satanic Art." Motor Sister Announces "Ride" Album

Motor Sister is comprised of a veritable super group - a team of musicians whose collective musical pedigrees speak for themselves.

Mother Superior founder, guitarist, and vocalist Jim Wilson fronts the band, with Anthrax's Scott Ian on guitar, Pearl Aday on backing vocals, Joey Vera on bass, and John Tempesta on drums.

The group was originally assembled to jam for Scott Ian's fiftieth birthday party. Thanks to Scott's wife Pearl Aday, who has been working on her solo career with Mother Superior front man Jim Wilson for years, all it took was a quick phone call and the stage was literally set for Scott's dream gig. "I wanted to cherry-pick a set list of my favorite Mother Superior songs and get these guys together and have the concert at my house," Ian says of the event that eventually led to an album.

Enthralled at the idea of making a record of his favorite Mother Superior songs, Ian emailed producer Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Steel Panther) and asked if he thought it was possible to recapture the same spontaneous energy Motor Sister generated at their makeshift gig, and if an album could be recorded quickly. "He said, 'Yeah, we can make the record in two days and we can make it sound really good.' So that's what we did," Ian comments. "A week and a half later, we made the record in LA over a two day period. We recorded the whole thing live in the studio and the set-up was at my house.

"[Mother Superior] frontman Jim [Wilson] was totally into the idea. Pearl was a huge Mother Superior fan from way back and was in. I asked my good friends Joey Vera (Fates Warning/Armored Saint) and John Tempesta (White Zombie, The Cult) to be a part of it because I knew they were both big fans as well and with no hesitation they said, 'We're in.'"

Wilson, too, was stoked by the opportunity to dust off some songs he hadn't played since his LA rock trio broke up in the early 2000's after releasing eight albums and playing as Henry Rollins' backing band. "I definitely didn't need any arm-twisting," he says. "I was totally flattered and thought it was a great idea. I figured it would be fun and it was a great opportunity for a new chapter to be established in order to move forward." More...

Broken Hope Recruits Bassist And Guitarist

Broken Hope recently overhauled the band lineup by adding new bassist, Diego Soria of Disgorge, and new lead-guitarist, Matt Szlachta (ex-Chimaira). Broken Hope founding-father Jeremy Wagner says:

"I'm far beyond delighted with our new members--Diego and Matt. Both of these guys are old friends of mine, and both are amazing musicians of the highest order. Diego's history with extreme death-metaller's, Disgorge, and Matt's contributions to Chimaira bring a new level of professionalism and brutality to Broken Hope.

"Moreover, Diego and Matt possess a true love for death metal and grind. Their passion for extreme metal was something their predecessors lacked--and it's a most-welcome adrenaline-shot that Broken Hope needed badly. SEE YOU ALL IN 2015--STRONGER & SICKER THAN EVER!"

Broken Hope has also announced the following 2015 Spring & Summer European festival appearances:

Fans Re-Record "St. Anger"

Re-recorded in it's entirety, #STANGER2015 is a project from Daryl G. and Chris D. (from Grace The Skies) and Dave C. (of Adust), and is a brand new version of Metallica's 2003 album "St. Anger."

You can stream the full re-recorded version below. Give it a listen and let us know if you think this one is better. The following press release was also issued:

"Recorded during a turbulent time in the bands career, St. Anger has always divided opinion. Some longtime fans were turned off by the drop tuned riffs and raw production, whilst some listeners embraced it, myself included. #STANGER2015 is for the listeners who weren't so fond on the record back when it was released in 2003.

"Recorded from the ground up, the album has been shortened by 15 minutes, yet every riff and lyric is intact, resulting in a more concise and focused record.

"The production is also more conventional, and we hope that Metallica fans appreciate this new version of an album that is always looked at as an anomaly in the incredible career of the world's biggest metal band, Metallica.

"Absolutely no money has been made from this project, and it has been created out of love for one of our favourite bands of all time. There will be no download links or alternative streaming options aside from this singular youtube video." More...

Abhor Releasing New Album

At long last, Italian black metal institution Abhor will unleash sixth album, "Ritualia Stramonium," set to drop on March 31st via Moribund Records.

Four years since the band's last Moribund album, "Ab Luna Lucenti, Ab Noctua Protecti," Abhor here drives deeper into the ancient mysticism of classic black metal. A statement from the band reads:

"Ritualia Stramonium is an esoteric opera, studied and conceived for the love of the horned one, summoning and epitomizing the uttermost priciples of aristocratic witchcraft, according to the highest law of the temple of the Vinum Sabbati, the archpriest of the old serpent, the cardinal of the great fiery red dragon and the congregation of the fullmoon... Praise our Lord and see you in Hell."

The album is dedicated to the memory of Errans Infernorum, who passed away March 20th, 2014. The track listing is:

1. Between Flames and Moon
2. Diabolus est qui id invocat
3. De exorcismis et supplicantionibus quibusdam

Dust Bolt Releases "Agent Thrash" Music Video

German thrashers Dust Bolt released the a new music video for the track "Agent Thrash." The song appears on the latest album "Awake the Riot," which was issued in May of 2014 via Napalm Records.

According to the band: "The video is a DIY project that was written, recorded and cut only by Dust Bolt and the 'DustxBoltxThrashxCrewx.' The idea behind is was to create a funny story based on the figure of Mr. Agent Thrash that captures the spirit of the song and what it's about - having a good time, music and friendship. Mr. Thrash collects people from everywhere to share the one moment with them, where superficialities and prejudices mean nothing and everybody shares the joy of heavy music. Agent Thrash is an anthem for anybody who wants to join the riot and kick some ass!

"For that DUST BOLT would want to thank everyone who was involved in the production a thousand times, it was a pleasure and a great day with all of you! And special thanks go out to the filming crew Fini, (S)Niklas and Bic and to the Agents Domme and Marius!"
