Pit Stories: Filling In For Decrepit Birth

Tuesday's here again, which means its time for another round of pit mayhem straight from the metal underground.

For this week's tale of pit glory, Patrick Morris (Dissident Clone, ex-Demonicon) shares this tale of getting a last minute gig with a big name band:

My former band Demonicon opened for Hate Eternal and Black Dahlia Murder at Station4 in St. Paul, MN in 2008 with two days notice. Three Inches of Blood and Decrepit Birth had just dropped off the tour, so the promoter added us. We hadn't practiced in a few weeks because our drummer wasn't enjoying the band. To our surprise, he agreed to do the show. We were on stage just about to start playing, and my singer handed me a red Solo cup with a generous shot of Jaegermeister in it. I looked at him quizzically - and with his cup in hand, he pointed to the Black Dahlia guys on the side of the stage, who were holding the bottle and giving us the horns. I slammed into the shot and tore into the first song - we were kicking ass!

During the second song, a guy set off the whole crowd with a stage dive. From that moment to the end of the set, there was perpetual stage diving and a sick circle pit. Playing on stage and having people reacting that way to my band totally validated all the bull shit I had gone through in my life to play music. After we got done, there was one dude with a bloody nose and another guy with a broken clavicle. To my surprise, both were in good spirits and talking to me about how much fun they had. Looking back... I’m pretty sure people thought we were Decrepit Birth.

For our musician regulars - be sure let us know the best last minute show you've played and what it means to you to see the fans throwing down in the pit during your set. More...

Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth Streaming New Track

With the imminent unveiling of the self-titled debut from Seattle doom visionaries Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth now less than one month away, today Decibel Magazine heaves forth opening track "Lava" for public ingestion. Listen in through the player below.

Fronted by guitarist/vocalist Tad Doyle, Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth is a trio of longtime rock rebels featuring Doyle alongside veteran bassist Peggy Doyle and drummer Dave French (The Anunnaki). Not surprisingly, the threesome's forthcoming long player summons some of the gnarliest sounds from the blackest depths of the Pacific Northwest.

Relays Doyle of the debilitating resonance of the record's opening hymn, "'Lava' was originally inspired by a Native American folklore story that talks about Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier, both active volcanos in the Cascade Mountain range spanning Washington State and Oregon.

"The story in short; 'Where little sister goes, big sister follows,' with 'little sister' being Mt. St. Helens and 'big sister' being Mt. Rainier. Native culture and geology records have mentioned that these eruptions happen every four-hundred or so years. Rainier is well overdue. This song is basically a tribute to the force and natural powers that lay within the region and what an eruption would look like through the eyes of the life that surrounds the region."

The "Brothers Of the Sonic Cloth" album was captured at Robert Lang Studios and Doyle's own Witch Ape Studio in Seattle, Washington and mixed by Billy Anderson (Sleep, High On Fire, Melvins et al). The album will be released February 17th, 2015. More...

Karyn Crisis Contributing To Charity Anthology

Karyn Crisis (Crisis, Ephel Duath, Gospel Of The Witches) will contribute a written piece, entitled "Angels In The Ashes," to The Healing Monsters benefit anthology for Dustin LaValley and Katherine Ludwig.

Metal Maniacs co-founder and former editor, Katherine Ludwig, has been battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and dark fiction writer, screenwriter, and metal/hardcore enthusiast Dustin LaValley has been struggling with Crohn's/IBD issues; all proceeds from The Healing Monsters will be split evenly between LaValley's and Ludwig's respective medical funds.

In regards to her contribution to this collection of metal-horror poetry and prose, Karyn comments:

"When Shawn Macomber asked me to contribute something to Katherine Ludwig's cause, I was honored and thrilled to give something back to a woman who's given so much to the metal music community. I consider that each action we take sends out a resonance, so with my piece I made an offering of strength to a woman who already symbolizes that very idea to many other people...

"'Angels In the Ashes' is based around a stanza I wrote when I was 15 years old, as I was ruminating on the limitations of the physical body while I struggled with my own disease. In adulthood, I've perceived that within my greatest personal weakness can be found my deepest strength, simply trying to draw my attention into myself where it lay dormant, awaiting our reunion." Black Fast Entering The Studio

St. Louis metal outfit Black Fast will enter Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, FL this week with veteran producer Erik Rutan to begin work on a debut LP for eOne Music.

Known for his work with Hate Eternal, Six Feet Under, Goatwhore, and Cannibal Corpse, Rutan was an easy choice for the band.

"We can't wait to work with Erik Rutan! Erik is a legend," says front man Aaron Akin. "Excited doesn't even do justice to the mind frame we are in. I've followed his work for over a decade, and he's been at it for way longer than that. I mean, it's fucking Erik Rutan!"

"I am very excited to work with Black Fast," Rutan says himself. "They have a very unique style with a ton of energy, creativity, and a certain aggressiveness and fire rarely seen in this day and age of music. From the moment I first heard them I knew that we would be a great pairing in making a massive album. Their potential is limitless and their originality and creativity shows no boundaries. I look forward to bringing out the best of them in their performances and helping craft a masterful record!"

Black Fast recently announced a new record deal with eOne Music and plan on releasing the effort later this year. The yet-to-be titled LP will be the band's follow-up to the self-released "Starving Out The Light."

Grimoire Streaming "Cachot De Cristal"

Quebecois black metallers Grimoire today premiere the new track "Cachot de Cristal" - listen in below, courtesy of a stream hosted by InvisibleOranges.com.

The song hails from Grimoire's "L'aorasie Des spectres rêveurs" EP, set for North American release on January 27th, 2015 via Eisenwald. The label issued this press release:

"Although EP-length at four songs, 'L'aorasie Des spectres rêveurs' feels like a complete, total experience, bursting with windswept grandeur and icy-yet-fiery passion. Grimoire might seem like a new band and thus 'L'aorasie Des spectres rêveurs' its first proper introduction to the international black metal scene, but the band is the sole vision of erstwhile Forteresse/Csejthe member Fiel.

"Formed in 2010, Grimoire reveals the expression of a wandering, lonesome soul searching for the path to spiritual elevation. Dreams, fantasy, and beauty summoned upon the darkest mourning, ashes of chaos and emptiness, the broken wheel of time, creation and destruction, a conscience invoked by nonexistence, a light raised in obscurity: all this is accomplished across 'L'aorasie Des spectres rêveurs' with emotive, melodic black metal of a pure 'n' proud vintage, yet one not boxed in by tradition or cliche."

The EP's track listing is:

1. Tragédie Des ombres
2. Les rumeurs Des astres
3. Cachot de cristal
4. Cantilène céleste More...

Destrage Posts Acoustic Video

Milan, Italy's Destrage recently put together an acoustic arrangement for "Where the Things Have No Colour" from "Are You Kidding Me? No.", the band's latest album released in 2014 on Metal Blade.

The band captured the acoustic performance on video, complete with a string section. The video was recorded at RecLab Studios and can be seen below, thanks to Metal Hammer.

Destrage vocalist Paolo Colavolpe discusses the video and song: "Where The Things Have No Colour has a very personal meaning to us. This song talks about certain moments, it's hard to explain them but if you felt like this once in your life you will find the lyrics extremely familiar. We talked a lot about the possibility of making an acoustic version of one of our songs, and this felt like being the perfect occasion.

"Our biggest thanks goes to Larsen Premoli who arranged the strings trio and made this version possible. This video is dedicated to all the people and friends involved in our project, who always support us during tours, recording sessions, video making, bullshits and everything that concerns the band universe. You know who you are. We hope you're going to enjoy this version, even if it sounds a bit different from our standards. We wish you all an amazing 2015!" More...

Periphery Posts Entire New Album "Alpha"

In anticipation of their new double album - "Juggernaut: Alpha" and "Juggernaut: Omega" - Periphery is streaming the entire new album "Alpha".

Explains guitarist Misha Mansoor: "Part of the reason that we did do the separate albums, because it is a long haul, even as we were writing it and everything, we were like, 'Man, this is a lot of material'. I think it makes it a lot more digestible that we had 2 separate albums because that way, it is sort of treated that way. Movies and things that really have to set an ambience. A big part of it was that we wanted this to be really cinematic. We wanted there to be a definite vibe to certain parts and to the album in general.
