Pit Stories: The Slippery Beer Patch

Our never-ending quest for the best Pit Stories continues this week with a tale from Eau Claire, Wisconson-based doom band Caveat. Guitarist Brandon O'Connell shared this story of the slippery beer patch leading to some pit-side mayhem:

Well this story is quite ridiculous, mostly because it involves our old drummer’s dad. It was Caveat’s first hometown show, second show overall. We were playing with our friend, Ben Hinz’s (Dwarfcraft Devices) new band, Blood Bears. They were a mostly-instrumental juggernaut that created soundscapes that could blow doors off bomb shelters. We also played with a melodic death/doom band from Minneapolis called Mordwolf, later renamed Ulvmord due to some weird legal issues. Rounding out the bill were our best pals Good Guys Wear Wolf from Chetek, WI. It was an eclectic show to say the least so there were many types of people there. We were even more of a punk doom band back then. It made sense because two-thirds of Caveat (Palmer and B-Rad, bass and drums respectively) was also in crusty thrash band, Accusation.

Anyway, after our set and loading up our gear, we all grabbed some drinks with friends, family, etc., one of whom was Butch, Brad’s dad, who was already noticeably intoxicated. Once Mordwolf was done setting up and sound checking, their death/doom onslaught resulted in a mosh pit. Things went on without a hitch for quite a while but that didn’t last.

Things got a little heated when some falling-over-drunk guy went thrashing about with no intent but to apparently look like an idiot. He ended up slipping on some spilled beer and INTO Brad’s dad, who was right on the edge of the mosh pit area, totally oblivious to what was going on. Butch ended up stumbling a little bit due to the contact and slipped on the same beer causing him to fall face first onto the ground. The next thing anyone saw was Butch, obviously furious about something, yelling at some kid and trying to grab him. It turns out the fall broke off part of his tooth and he was bleeding out of his mouth. Butch had to be restrained and taken to the other side of the venue in order to calm down. A few vodkas later, he was just fine. That kid ended up getting his at the bottom of a bar stool. Whoops.

Ruby The Hatchet Releasing New Album

The Philadelphia psychedelic doombringers from Ruby The Hatchet will release new album, "Valley of the Snake," on February 24th via Tee Pee Records.

The new LP was recorded at Retro City Studios in Germantown, PA, and the following press release was issued about the coming juggernaut:

"Ruby The Hatchet's music fuses the sinister tactic of brainwash with blistering riffs and the rebellious mood of sorcery, re-imagining a different path for metal. Evoking a decade's worth of maturity gained in just a few short years, the genesis from the band's 2011 self-titled EP to present day has been nothing short of stunning.

"Valley of the Snake is a six song journey; a fantastical trek with huge, blistering tracks that journey over peaks and valleys and ditches and oceans before leaving you spinning. Seething and spitting, Ruby The Hatchet hammers behemoth waves of dogma and doom, merging precision and patience with a sinister foot-stomping, head-bobbing power. Vocalist Jillian Taylor's serpentine vocals, scene-stealing howls and macabre lyrics conjure holistic atmospheres over swollen grooves that grow and flow in circles and waves. Guitars crunch, wail and burn.

"Heavy-handed and hypnotic in equal parts, Ruby The Hatchet creates the perfect shape shift between psych density and metal grandiosity, representing something utterly imposing; primeval and oppressively heavy while maintaining a level of breathless intensity over the course of the full album. This hex is for you."

The track listing is as follows:

1. Heavy Blanket
2. Vast Acid
3. Tomorrow Never Comes
4. Unholy Behemoth
5. Demons
6. Valley of the Snake More...

Cradle Of Filth Issues Album Update

Cradle Of Filth has checked in with the following update about recording a new full-length album due out this year:

"Monday 5th January bears irrevocable witness to Cradle Of Filth's Richard Shaw - Guitarist entering Grindstone studios in deepest, darkest Suffolk, England, to add his carnivorous licks to the forthcoming Cradle album; codename 'Hammer Of The Witches.'

"So far Martin 'Marthus' Skaroupka and Marek 'Ashok' Smerda have delivered their all to the dark cacophonous brew, now Richard's time has come to shine like a well-polished retaliatory nuclear strike button.

"The album is sounding amazing thus far, and should sound even fuller by the end of next week, when Richard finishes his guitar parts and vacates the luxurious werewolf-assailed country barn pad to make way for bassist Daniel Firth Music to rally forth from bonny Scotland. Album excretion date: 26th June via Nuclear Blast Records."

The "Hammer of the Witches" album will follow previous 2012 full-length release "The Manticore And Other Horrors" (reviewed here).

Ruthless Reveals New Album

The release date of the new Ruthless album "They Rise" is now set for CD format on January 30th 2015. The pre-order phase will start on January 17th, 2015 in the Pure Steel webshop. The label comments:

"With their EP 'Metal Without Mercy' (1984) and the album 'Discipline Of Steel' from 1986, Ruthless from L.A. got a special place in the hearts of all U.S. metal fans. Five years later we’re finally proud to announce the first studio album after almost 30 years.

"With 'They Rise' the quartet stick back to their their roots: Classical, straight-forward and sometimes aggressive U.S. metal, powered by a tight rhythm-section, thundering doublebass and great, thundering riffing.

"Original frontman Sammy DeJohn meanwhile sings with a higher voice than known before, but still delivers the aggression of the good, old days. Additionally to the nine new songs we put the whole 'Metal Without Mercy' EP on the album as bonus. With classics like 'Gates Of Hell' and 'Metal Without Mercy' every real metal head will be completely satisfied. Ruthless is back in their old strength; the cult is still alive!"

Raised Fist Announces New Album Release

Epitaph Records is pleased to announce the release of "From The North," the new album from the Swedish hardcore punks in Raised Fist.

"From The North" is the quintet's first full-length album in 5 years and will be out on January 19th, 2015. The album is available for pre-order at iTunes here. Epitaph Records comments:

"If you had to characterize Raised Fist – one of Sweden's hardcore scene's longest-running and most vital acts – with just one word, respect would be it. Want proof? Lou Koller of Sick Of It All described Raised Fist as 'one of the world's three most progressive hardcore bands,' Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden fame played them on his radio show and Jona Weinhofen (I Killed The Prom Queen, ex-Bring Me The Horizon) cites them as a huge influence."

Speaking of the album, front man Alexander "Alle" Hagman says, "this time, everything has connected, like pieces in a perfect puzzle. You know when you have a classic album recorded." He continues, "when you do something with your heart, and the timing is right, there is magic. That is what happened with 'From The North'. From The North is where we are from, and we do shit differently up here! We do it hard, whether it's on stage or in the studio."

Sound Storm To Enter Studio For New Release

Italian symphonic metal act Sound Storm has announced that the band will soon enter Sandlane Recording Facilities with producer Joost Van Der Broek (Epica/Ayreon/MaYaN) for the recording of the yet untitled follow up to 2012's "Immortalia" (see review here).

The new release is expected to be out by year end. Since 2012, the band has gone through a myriad of changes, including the loss of long time drummer Federico Brignolo and vocalist Philippe D'Orange. While the band has yet to announce D'Orange's replacement, all the details will be revealed soon.

The announcement reads: "We are excited to announce that we are finally to accomplish the making of the new album, coming out later this year! Currently we are ending with a bang all the pre-productions in our studio, later on we will enter the Sandlane Recording Facilities along with the amazing Joost Van Der Broek (Epica, Ayreon, Mayan, Anneke Van Giesbergen, etc) for starting the production.

"The new chapter took a long time to see the light for many reasons. Firstly, because of many shadows and lights along our path, lately. Luckily, everything's been fixed yet. Then, we surely needed a bit more time to find out a new way to create something new and innovative, something to be proud of."

"However here we are, finally stronger and louder than ever: this is something never experienced before by us (and by you, we hope!), that's not just a - epic, symphonic, experimental and, of course, metal - album, but that's something more...global!"

"Keep this in your mind: 'Follow the dragonfly to discover a new World...', and you will experience something new. Does not matter where you will find that, just follow and imagine..."

"More details to come soon, even about the new singer of course! In the meantime, enjoy the amazing new logo and symbol, created by our old good friend Gustavo Sazes" (shown below).

"See you in Germany in the upcoming weekend, along with the mighty HAGGARD again!" More...

Yesterday's Saints Reveals Album Details

Yesterday's Saints is gearing up to release "Generation of Vipers" via Draconum Records this coming February 3rd, 2015. The following press release was also issued about the coming full-length:

"Concept albums are not new territory in the metal genre by any means. But Northern Virginia's Yesterday's Saints elevate the notion of conceptual metal to a whole other level, thanks to the rich, extensive storytelling and the pummeling metal of Generation of Vipers. The music is as smart and as thought-provoking as it is extreme, and that's not an easy thing to do. Striking the artful balance is difficult, but Yesterday's Saints make it seem easy.

"The current iteration of Yesterday's Saints, which plays death-thrash-power combo, has been in existence since summer 2010 and with a self-released EP and some local touring under the band's belt. They knew that a full concept album was the next step they wanted to take. But they did not go about it capriciously. The decision to go with a concept for the 11-track Generation of Vipers was driven by the most important things the songwriting and careful thought.

"The album is assembled like an opera, with three acts, along with an instrumental interlude and outro. It traces the story of Satan, one of the most notorious characters in history, throughout time, from his desire to usurp God's throne to his modern infiltration of mankind to the indication that all of Earth's inhabitants are now his descendants. Trial Details New Album "Vessel"

Traditional metal act Trial has revealed the details about the upcoming new release "Vessel." The album is set to drop via High Roller Records on January 21st (EU) and January 23rd (USA). The sophomore full length release is the follow up to the 2013 EP "Malicious Arts." The cover art, created by Costin Chioreanu, can be seen below.

"Vessel" is the debut on new label High Roller Records and contains seven songs reminiscent of early Iron Maiden, mid-period Mercyful Fate with a bit of Omen and countrymates Below thrown in for good measure. “Well, it is of course a great honour to be mentioned among such powerful names," says guitarist Andreas Johnsson. “It’s flattering. But we don’t want to be seen as a copy of these bands or write songs similar to theirs. If we’ve managed to capture the same feelings or energies as these bands on certain records it’s great, but like I said, our intention was never to try to sound like them."

The track listing for the album is:

1. Vessel
2. To New Ends
3. Ecstasy Waltz
4. Through Bewilderment
5. A Ruined World
6. Where Man Becomes All
7. Restless Blood More...
