Unearthing The DeLand Rock & Metal Underground
Each week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week we take a look at some of the bands that took part in the recent DeLand Rock & Metal Festival from November 2014. Our report for the festival can be read at this location.
The DeLand Rock & Metal Festival – or “DRMF” as it is affectionately known by the festival's community – is one of the most diverse metal festivals in the United States. This past year there were days dedicated to death metal (or any style with a death style vocal, including old school death, deathcore, hardcore, melodic death and folk) and another day themed by power metal (or any power, traditional, hard rock act), the second of which is headlined by festival promoter Camden Cruz’s own…Seven Kingdoms. Immersed in an infectious sense of community and a plethora of local Florida acts (including the now defunct Massacre), there were also some out of town acts that really brought the “thunder” to the entire event.
Of three of those out of town acts, two of them had never once played a live show together. In fact, those two acts, Judicator and Project: Roenwolfe (both anchored by guitarist/songwriter Tucson, Arizona’s Tony Cordisco), had never met as a band ever until 45 minutes before they hit the stage back to back on the Friday night kick off show. As They Burn Calling It Quits
French outfit As They Burn has issued the following announcement about deciding to call it a day:
"We are deeply moved to announce the end of the band. As They Burn was an amazing way to let our artistic energy flow for a fabulous seven years. We lived and grew up in rhythm with what is for us much more than a musical adventure – a real humane endeavour which embraced a lot of people.
"It is because we honour and respect you guys that we have taken this difficult decision. Up until now, we have provided you with ourselves in the best possible way and we never want to put that aside. As we are now, we are incapable of providing you with the As They Burn you expect us to be. And it is impossible for us, musically and artistically to be less than what we expect and aspire to be, and we will NEVER accept to be half of ourselves.
"By taking this decision we value honesty above become a band that we would never want to be. It is time for us to follow our own independent paths, each cradled by the memories of the past years and the brotherly love that unites all six of us. And it is the same desire of honesty and same willpower that we have decided to part ways with you guys on stage and not by a simple press release!
"We will be playing several farewell shows in 2015 so we can meet one last time on stage (Booking contact: Milton@onlytalentproductions.com).
"From the bottom of our hearts, thank you! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! Through this message we would also like to thank: our mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters - our families for allowing us to go after and live a dream. We would also like to thank Bastien Jacquesson, our sound engineer and ally on stage, who brought us peace of mind and confidence. A devoted man we have always been able to count on, a real pillar. You are the 6th member of the band but you are also above all our brother, our big brother. More...

Abstracter Streaming "Lightless"
With Oakland, California-based Abstracter's second full-length, "Wound Empire," nearing release in early February, an ominous foretaste of the album's wretchedness has been leaked via Cvlt Nation. Check out "Lightless" below.
Boasting an apocalyptic view on the future of our planet and its occupants, Abstracter's harsh output surges with influences from across the extreme underground music spectrum, a crushing blackened sludge infiltrated with elements of noise, black metal and psychedelic wrath.
The album was recorded and mixed at Earhammer Studios in Oakland, California by Greg Wilkinson (Brainoil, Pallbearer, Noothgrush, etc.) and mastered at Audiosiege Mastering studios in Portland, Oregon by Brad Boatright (Wolves In The Throne Room, Nails, Sunn O))), Sleep, etc.). Caveat Announces Digital "Kobayashi Maru" Release
Tridroid Records is excited to announce that "Kobayashi Maru" by Caveat will be the first digital release for the label. Tridoid comments:
"Despite the fact that the band is commonly pigeon-holed as doom metal, the band in fact has elements of many different genres, such as psychedelic metal and death metal. The diversity of genres present in the music makes 'Kobayashi Maru' a fascinating listen.
"Originating in late 2012 and residing in Eau Claire, WI, Caveat seeks to combine veteran experience with an open approach to doom / stoner metal, and music in general. The lineup currently consists of Brandon, Emily, Zakk, and Nate (Bones). With said lineup including current and ex members of Infernal Altar, Dresden, Boner No Boner, Purge The Woods, Death First, Flags Will Cover The Coffins, Caveat’s sound deviates from the status quo and is new territory for all members.
"As a result, the song structure remains unconstrained, all the while retaining a heavy and driving undertone. When not writing or rehearsing, members recreate in a variety of ways, with hobbies including: bickering, hugs, drinking, small engine repair, maintaining spreadsheets, but mostly drinking. If there is one way to summarize Caveat, it is with a quote. 'They don’t think it be like it is, but it do.'" More...
