Podcast
Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 40
This week on the MetalUnderground.com Official Podcast, we bring you yet another band hailing from Dayton, Ohio. This time it’s Four Star Revival, a four-piece Christian outfit dedicated to spreading the Good News not through screamo/hardcore - as has become inexplicably and irritatingly custom - but through an invigorating blend of hard rock, traditional and power metal.
Debut album “Knights Of The Revival” is out now, and we are proud to present and discuss the song “Hold On,” followed by an airing of “Red” at our sign-off.
Co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) has another ticket giveaway for Fort Lauderdale’s Revolution Live to announce, so tune in to hear the details. He also is eager to report on his experience at last month’s giveaway concert featuring The Ghost Inside, Every Time I Die, and Architects.
Co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) reacts to the recent implosion of Megadeth’s lineup that saw drummer Shawn Drover and guitarist Chris Broderick unceremoniously exit the band. He also has a few thoughts to express regarding the online reaction to the widely-publicized financial woes of former Creed frontman Scott Stapp.
And before you start hollering, for the record, NO, he does not think Creed was a “metal” band. To learn why he thinks this topic belongs in the discussion… you’ll just have to listen in!
You can do so here, and subscribe via iTunes and RSS feed.
Ghoulgotha Reveals "The Deathmass Cloak"
On January 13th, Dark Descent Records will release the debut full-length from San Diego-based death metal band Ghoulgotha. The following press release was also issued about the album:
"After a demo, EP and a split, Ghoulgotha emphatically announces their presence in the metal realm with the 53-minute The Deathmass Cloak. Produced by Damian Herring (Horrendous) at Subterranean Watchtower Studio, The Deathmass Cloak is a weird and winding death metal album destined to satisfy even the harshest critics. Cover art by Mattias Frisk (Vanhelgd).
"W. Sarantopoulos (AKA Elektrokutioner - also of Decrepitah, Encoffincation, and more) moved from Dallas to San Diego and began searching for musicians that were looking to bring some Doom/Death to Southern California. Shortly after moving, he hooked up with drummer C. Koryn (Ascended Dead) who shared a lot of the same influences. Their playing styles worked perfectly with each other, making the song writing process very easy. The two jammed for a few months while looking for other members to complete the line up.
"The band name Ghoulgotha was chosen as it represents our dedication to rotting old skull doom/death. In the summer of 2012, J. Moreno (Ascended Dead) and I. Mann were added on bass/vocals and second guitar, respectively. The full horde quickly put together a two song demo/promo called No Peace To Rest In which will be released in September 2012. The band recently signed with Dark Descent Records, who will unleash The Deathmass Cloak in early 2015." More...
Desolate Shrine Announces New Album
Finland's purveyors of chaos and wrath from Desolate Shrine will return with a vengeance on January 13th with the release of "The Heart of the Netherworld" via Dark Descent Records. The label comments:
"The band's third album features seven of their darkest and most crushing invocations to date. With a massive, old-school-tinged wall of sound, the band continues to twist death metal into new and frightening forms while maintaining the genre's most destructive and necessary elements. The storm approaches..."

Zex Re-Releasing "Fight For Yourself"
As part of a massive upcoming 2015 label release schedule coming together, Magic Bullet Records is stoked to announce the upcoming worldwide re-release and distribution of "Fight For Yourself," the infectious debut album by Ottawa, Ontario-based punk rock quartet, Zex. Magic Bullet comments:
"Delivering their no-bullshit take on early punk penetrated with an edge of early heavy metal, carrying forth the torch lit by the influential predecessors who've inspired their path, Zex pumps out melodic and energetic but sarcastic and riotous tunes. Streetfight-ready songs with a darker edge are surrounded by catchy, upbeat anthems, producing a humble, raw and inspiring culmination of straight-up melodic punk rock.
"Citing influences including Gary Glitter, The Sweet, Sweeny Todd, Suzi Quatro, Slade, Shakin' Street, Brats and the like, elements of founders Blondie, The Ramones, X-Ray Specs, Vice Squad, The Partisans and others can be heard in ZEX's sound, with a tightly-knit musical backdrop courtesy of drummer Tasha G (ex- Gone Drinkin', Get Wrecked, Slumlord) and bassist Gab Sex (ex- Revenge Of The Mormons), and wailing leads and solos from guitarist Jo Capitalcide (ex- Iron Dogs, Germ Attak), all fueling the vocals of Gretchen Steel, her clean approach wavering between the erogenous style of Debbie Harry and the more raw approach of Joan Jett or Pat Benatar. Kouzin Bedlam Releases New Album
Kouzin Bedlam's debut album "Longing For The Incomplete" is out today via Inverse Records, and you can stream the album below. Inverse also comments:
"Kouzin Bedlam is a baroque painting painted in the colors of heavy metal. It is highly technical and deeply embedded in mythology; it is sometimes over the top, yet always lyrical and sublime. Its extraordinary qualities lie not just in terms of song writing and technical ability. In fact, Kouzin Bedlam is not just a band; it is a philosophy, it is a family; it is psychology and spirituality expressed in a musical extravaganza with surprising depths.
"Carl Gustav Jung uncovered the archetypes dwelling in our collective unconscious. Our image of a great mother, the devil, God, the trickster and the hero all sit deep inside our minds. And then there is Kouzin Bedlam – the unknown twin, the uncivilized ”I”, we all try to ignore. The band’s debut album, Longing for the Incomplete (produced by Jimmy Westerlund), releases this being upon the conscious world. Kouzin Bedlam does its entrance in a blaze of virtuosic heavy metal, at times highly aggressive, at others bittersweet and melancholic. Lyrically it does everything from cursing its very existence to learning how to breathe.
"As mentioned, Kouzin Bedlam has so far been unknown to the world of conscious human thoughts, but the members of the band are all experienced musicians, artists and doomsday philosophers." More...

Warbringer Comments On Band Lineup
After parting ways with two members earlier this year, Warbringer has issued the following update about the band lineup:
"Status report - new lineup almost complete. Of previous members, it is myself (Kevill) and original guitarist Adam Carroll remaining.
"We have two new guys, Noah Young on guitar and Vicken Hovsepian on drums, these dudes kill on their instruments and in the month or so we've all been jamming we have about 12 songs getting pretty fucking tight. They are both longtime metalheads and have been into Warbringer for many years, and know well the spirit of the band. Awesome to work with such motivated and talented people.
"Unfortunately Ben Mottsman (Bass) is not going to be joining us again, best wishes to him in his new project, farewell to a rocking dude.
"We have some bass tryouts coming up and we'll see how that goes. Yeah, I know, we've hit basically every conceivable obstacle out there and this is taking forever. But we aren't gonna play a damned note to you guys until the band is sounding tighter than ever, we aren't gonna do some half-assed comeback, when you see us again it's gonna be sharp as a goddamned razor."
Desource Announces Lineup Changes
Desource is proud to announce the recruitment of new bass player Flavio M. Cardozo, who previously played with tech death band Hideous Divinity and is also working on a solo album.
For the next live shows, the band is also excited to reveal that Giulio Burini (In Tenebra, Dreamless, Subcortical Inertia) will play drums, with the first show scheduled for December 6th with Destrage, Protest the Hero, The Contortionist, and The Safety Fire.
For the recording sessions of an upcoming new album, waiting for a new permanent drummer to be found, the band will work with drummer Mike Malyan (Monuments and The Algorithm). The new 5-track album is called "Ambition," with a release date TBA. More...

Atomicide Releasing New LP
Once again Iron Bonehead Productions unleashes a tornado of ancient South American darkness: Atomicide's second LP, "Chaos Abomination," is set for international release on January 30th, 2015. The label comments:
"For the past decade, this Chilean power-trio have been mining the depths of the death metal underground, delivering one deadly demo after another, before culminating in the band's debut album, the accurately titled Spreading the Cult of Death, in 2013.
"Now, with the equally accurately titled Chaos Abomination, Atomicide unload their most devastating arsenal yet. Surging with war-torn intensity, gnarled and gnarling, teeth-gnashing and frothing with sadistic intent, Chaos Abomination is a veritable hellstorm of deathrashing madness. Deservingly, Atomicide have coated Chaos Abomination in a production that's bold and bursting with rawness, and yet is clear 'n' nuanced enough to highlight their hackle-raising execution rather than neuter it. The time of Chaos Abomination is at hand; submission is the only response."

Cannabis Corpse Blazes Down Austin, Texas
Austin punk hangout Red 7 hosted D.R.I. the night before, a band that coincidentally hugely influenced Municipal Waste. Although “Land Phil” Hall plays in Municipal Waste, it was his love for death metal, not crossover that brought him into Austin this night. This time he joined with his brother Josh “Hallhammer” Hall and new guitarist Brandon Ellis in support of the band’s latest full-length recording “From Wisdom To Baked" on an Austin stop that is part of a Metal Underground.com sponsored tour.
Before hearing songs of bud monsters and weed-induced murderous rampages, three opening bands sparked up the festivities. San Antonio brutal death squad Flesh Hoarder initiated the melee. The group was short two members due to it having taken on the show on short notice. Ryan Sylvie of Whore of Bethlehem filled in for Nick Moreno and the band played without guitarist Angel Tarin. It’s been a couple of years since Sylvie fronted Scattered Remains, but he was up to the task, as was the band. The group played a mix of slamming rhythms, guttural voices, quick cymbal strikes and down-tempo riffs in the vein of Immolation and Morbid Angel. Songs like “Ejaculating on the Faces of the Aborted” kept their set utterly offensive. More...
Blasphemic Cruelty Reveals Mini-Album Details
Today, the deaththrash commandos from Blasphemic Cruelty reveal the cover art for their upcoming mini-album for Hells Headbangers, to be titled "Crucible of the Infernum."
Painted by Juanjo Castellano Rosado, the cover art for Blasphemic Cruelty's "Crucible of the Infernum" will feature on both the mini-CD and mini-LP versions. A statement from founding guitarist Gene Palubicki reads:
"It has taken a bit of time, since 2008, to get back here with some new Blasphemic Cruelty material, but time has come for our death engines to rattle, and it is in the form of Crucible of the Infernum. It will feature three new full-force death/thrash insanities as the band is known for from the previous output and a merciless cover version of Sodom's 'The Crippler.' Final mixing sessions are in mid-January, and we're aiming for an early 2015 release." More...

Simus formed in 2008 and since the beginning they have been aware of their precise and ambitious goal: to express themselves in music, trying to be as true and original as possible, looking for inspiration from many other artistic fields, in order to involve their audience and make it reflect upon their work. At the Gates and Rotten Sound Destroy Helsinki
I arrived at the venue early, picking my way over snow that had turned to treacherously slippery ice in the weak Saturday sun. Moving through the now familiar steps of collecting my photo-pass, putting my winter layers in at the cloakroom, and trailing upstairs to the main venue area, I suddenly felt a burst of homesickness.
Rotten Sound is a Finnish deathgrind band originally from Vaasa. If you haven’t heard of them, you might have heard of their former drummer, Kai Hahto. They are intense, they are in your face and they are addictive to see live. The area in front of the stage was half-filled with enthusiastic fans, giving an illusion to not many people being at the venue yet. However, the small stage-level bar was
already packed and the railings of the balcony bar were filled.

1. The Ninth Wave
2. Twilight of the Gods
3. Prophecies
4. At the Edge of Time

Nightwish Releases Eighth Trailer On New Album
Finland's Nightwish released the part eight in a "making of" documentary series for the upcoming, yet untitled, new album, which set for release in 2015. The clip features the band is visiting the rainy city of London to record the choir, orchestral parts and percussions for their new album at Angel Studios.
Commented keyboard player and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen: "This must be the sixth or seventh time we’re working with these people. We’ve realized what they can do during these years. So it’s really not a surprise anymore but it hasn’t ceased to amaze me. The level of professionalism is just unbelievable. But even more importantly, they clearly like what they’re doing. The guys we’ve worked with for over 10 years are still up for it."
Added session-drummer Kai Hahto (Wintersun): "The professionalism is amazing. We were recording ethnic percussion yesterday. Some of the guys had played on Star Wars movies – and done Hans Zimmer soundtracks. I thought of myself as a humppa drummer. It was pretty amazing. They know their prima vista. You give them the notation, and they’ll nail it in no time."
Nightwish previously revealed the famed evolutionary biologist and atheist writer/leader Richard Dawkins as a guest on the album.
The clip was produced by Ville Lipiäinen. Check it out here: More...
Powerwolf To Release New Album In 2015
German power metal werewolves Powerwolf revealed that the majority of the songwriting for the follow up to "Preachers of the Night" (see review here) has been completed and will be released in 2015.
Guitarist/songwriter/producer Matthew Greywolf posted the following update: "During the past six months we have been secretly busy writing songs for the follow up album to 'Preachers of the night.' By now, the major part of the songwriting is finished and we're right now preparing for the studio work. The recordings will begin in early January and will keep us busy until March. The release is scheduled for summer 2015.
"So, what can you expect? Without revealing too much at this early stage, you can expect an album that's 100% uncompromising POWERWOLF-stuff.
"There's songs to go wild to, there's epic and atmospheric stuff - and a lot of wolfish metal madness in between - and quite a bunch of songs that will be must-plays on any future POWERWOLF liveshow for damn sure. We can't wait to get this album shaped! We'll keep you posted!"
Stay tuned...2015 promises to include werewolves. More...

Asking Alexandria has partnered with BitTorrent Bundle to release "Live From Brixton And Beyond" on Monday, December 15, the same day, the 2-disc live concert DVD will be available through all major retailers and at the Asking Alexandria webstore.
Following in the footsteps of Thom Yorke and Diplo, the group will make the digital version available in the BitTorrent Bundle.
Explains Ash Avildsen president of Sumerian Records: "Sumerian Records is excited to team up with BitTorrent Bundle to allow all the content available on the Asking Alexandria physical DVD to be packaged digitally online, where other outlets were unavailable to offer the same service. More importantly, BitTorrent taking positive steps to help both musicians and labels monetize their art in such a turbulent time in the music biz is both admirable and exciting. They take a small fee for their services and are very favorable to those on the creative side. I'm excited to see what the future holds for Sumerian and BitTorrent Bundle." More...
