Pelican Reveals "The Cliff" EP Details

Yesterday, Chicago's esteemed instrumental quartet Pelican announced a new EP, and today full details have become available.

The EP is due out through Southern Lord in the new year and is based around fresh re-imaginings of "The Cliff," a highlight from 2013's "Forever Becoming," and one recently completed new song.

Due out February 24th on 12" vinyl and digital formats, the four track "The Cliff" EP includes remixes from Justin Broadrick (of Godflesh, Jesu), Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford Meyer of ISIS/Palms, and, for only the second time in the band's fourteen year career, vocals. The following press release was also issued:

"Allen Epley (Shiner, The Life and Times) once again returns to the band's fold to transform the concept and overall outcome of what we have come to know as Pelican. Epley's seasoned voice is as broad and astonishingly capable on 'The Cliff' as the members behind the music, a claim those who have listened to Epley's contribution on 'Final Breath' from 2009's 'What We All Come To Need' will attest to. Seven Year Storm Posts EP Teaser

Initially never planning to release his music compositions beyond the borders of just song writing, freelance drummer / instructor Sean Lang was urged by his circle of musician friends to take his creativity to the next level.

The outcome is Vancouver-based instrumental progressive metal band Seven Year Storm, featuring the support of guitar-wizard and good friend Dean Lamb (Archspire).

To get these works of art off the studio floor, Lang launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise the necessary investment to complete the first collection of songs, which will be released in 2015 as two EPs: "Aion I" and "Aion II."

Lang comments: "I've been hard at work on my first release, Aion I. Here is a little taste of what is to come! This wouldn't be possible without the excellent musicians involved, as well as my amazing Indiegogo contributors who helped bring this project to life!" More...

Turbowolf Releasing New Album

Turbowolf will release second album, "Two Hands," on April 7th via Universal Music as the first band announced under the joint venture between Spinefarm Records and Search & Destroy. The following press release was also issued about the album:

"Two Hands is a master class in taking rock music to the outer limits and creating something truly unique. Stuffed to the gills with grooves, riffs and rhythms to make you lose your mind, it reaches deep into the secret history of mankind, ponders the wonders of evolution and even includes references to the government's mysterious mind control program, known as 'MK Ultra.'

"From the slow and sludgy Black Sabbath-esque chugs of 'Pale Horse' to the relentless, frantic beats of 'American Mirrors' and 'Rich Gift' to the more laid-back, trippy sounds of 'Invisible Hand' and 'Toy Memaha,' Turbowolf have delivered an album of unassailable sonic adventure, with an abundance of eclectic electronics, throbbing bass, bruising drums, fizzing guitars and the kind of vocals from singer Chris Georgiadis that have you believe he's singing for his very survival. "We’re excited to announce the new intriguing name in the Argonauta Records family! Bantoriak is a project by Izio Orsini, involving other Italian musicians, that follows the one vision of an experimental work influenced by psychedelic, doom and atmospheric sound.

"Beyond genres, it flows as hypnotic trip from the Ganges river to the California desert, reflecting the genuine approach on the musical taste, playing entirely with 70’s vintage and handcrafted instruments.

Strikken Releases New Album

Columbus, Ohio melodic prog/metalcore outfit Strikken just dropped new album "According To Purpose," which can be ordered over here.

"According To Purpose" serves as a heavy-hitting follow up to the 2011 full-length, "Long Story Short," which received two award nominations upon its arrival – “Best Metal Album” at the Independent Music Awards and “Best Heavy Metal Album of 2011” at the Columbus Music Awards.

Vocalist Ryan Henry states, “Our style of music has vastly changed between our last album, Long Story Short, and our new album, According to Purpose. At our core we remain the same – determined to deliver great, hard hitting passionate music. However, the music and writing process has matured considerably. This record stems from a far greater spiritual center with focus on the depravity of the world around us, yet with hope and resolution. The music is far more elaborate and fluid than the last record while remaining true to the style that has defined Strikken.” More...

Die Choking Releases "Tonsil" Video

Through a Metal Injection premiere, Philadelphia's Die Choking just released its first official video created for "Tonsil," the closing track on the trio's newest EP, "II."

"Tonsil" is a brutal testimonial for human rights, standing up for an individual's option to die when in a critical or vegetative state, rather than be kept alive in an unsatisfactory manner by family members. In direct action coinciding with this very personal stance on the matter, the band manufactured a physical document which serves as a legal will to officiate one's final wishes.

"This song is a dedication to the memory of Jahi McMath who died on December 12th 2013," issues founding bassist/vocalist Paul Herzog (ex-Total Fucking Destruction). "Despite the absolute, irreversible nature of brain death she (as far as I know) remains on 'life' support. The controversy of this is obvious but my interest is geared more towards the broader subject of CHOICE in regards to medical treatment during end of life scenarios... I love fantasy, horror, and sci-fi just like the next guy.

"For Die Choking, as an outlet for me, I don't want to create fiction or fantasy... I want to help and advocate. The subject in 'Tonsil' is universal and transcends politics, it is about the reality and potential severity of the death and dying process. This process, although, can be grounded in peace and serenity. It is often centered on resistance, aggression and a frequently indecisive routine of extensive medical and surgical processes. If I can help someone handle and make the important decisions that need to be made then I can feel like I am doing some good in a very sick world." More...

Sumac Reveals New Album Details

Sumac, the new band formed by Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom) and drummer Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists), and also featuring bassist Brian Cook (Russian Cricles), has completed work on debut album “The Deal.” Profound Lore Records comments:

"Formed with the yearning for Aaron Turner to once again create massive, raw, heavy and brutal music while working with a new versatile drummer to bring more of a unique and progressive edge to the ideas he had, the sound Sumachave manifested does tread familiar territory found in Turner’s previous work while creating a forward-thinking sonic monolith reminiscent of the sound found in the classic Hydra Head Records aesthetic of the late ‘90s (via such groundbreaking albums as 'Until Your Heart Stops,' 'We Are The Romans,' and the early days of Isis).

"With bassist Brian Cook also lending his help to bring the sound of the debut Sumac album even more to next-level territory, 'The Deal' presents quite the versatile and huge sound picture that will lay a foundation that will define Sumac as one of the most exciting new bands in heavy music today."

Recorded in Seattle by Mell Dettmer and mixed by Kurt Ballou at Godcity Studios in Salem, MA, the track listing for “The Deal” goes as follows:

1. Spectral Gold
2. Thorn In The Lions Paw
3. Hollow King
4. Blight End’s Angel
5. The Deal
6. The Radiance Of Being

“The Deal” is slated to be released on February 3rd on CD/digital formats via Profound Lore Records and on vinyl via SIGE Records respectively. More...

D.R.I. Zones Austin, Texas for Thrash

Austin crust punks with their spiked and patched jean jackets came out to Red 7 to support one of the first bands to “crossover” hardcore punk and thrash metal, D.R.I. Most of these punks (including me) weren’t part of the scene when D.R.I., Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, formed more than 30 years ago in Houston. Even some of the older members of the crowd weren’t around during the band’s days in Texas. Their memories were long after the band left for California’s Bay Area. The crowd didn’t need to be 50 years old tonight, though, as D.R.I. played nearly two hours of material spanning throughout their long career. More...

Costin Chioreanu Announces Book Release

The publishing wing of Svart Records that kicked off this month with the Isten Fanzine compilation continues in April with "Magic As A Golden Mean," which is a selection of mixed-media artworks by Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu.

The hardcover book will be launched at Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Holland in April 2015.

Costin has been creating album artwork for over a decade. He started out illustrating his band’s demos, but would soon be influenced by circumstances in post-Communist Romania, too.

In the mid-1990s, metal fans in Bucharest were lucky to find bootleg cassettes with badly photocopied covers. Undeterred, Costin simply made his own using Heavy Metal Magazine, the country’s sole heavy music publication, as a reference.

Today, he has emerged as one of the most talented artists in the realm of avant-metal and dark psychedelica, producing work for the likes of Darkthrone, Ulver, At The Gates, Triptykon, and Opeth. Whether the images he conjures are disturbing, provocative, or enchanting, they consistently show great finesse, sensitivity and depth. More...

Pinkish Black Signs With Relapse Records

Relapse Records is extremely proud to announce the signing of Forth Worth, TX's ominous and experimental post-everything duo Pinkish Black.

Consisting of Jon Teague (drums/synths) and Daron Beck (vocals/synths/keyboards), Pinkish Black formed in 2012 from the ashes of The Great Tyrant and has released two records that have been described as "an opus of doomy, sludgy, crushingly dark music" by Cvlt Nation and "a massive wall of dark, beautifully cosmic sound." by The Sleeping Shaman to "an absolute stunner" by Stereogum.

The duo is now preparing a third full-length and will enter Echo Lab studios in Argyle, TX this February. The band commented on signing to Relapse: "We are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work with Relapse. With such a legendary and diverse roster, we know that we are in good company. The diversity of the label is quite a relief, as our music does not easily fit into any one genre. Working with folks who understand that will be refreshing."

Additionally, Relapse will release the final works by the original group The Great Tyrant entitled "The Trouble With Being Born" in early 2015. The band commented on the release of this project as well: More...

Poison Idea Announces New Album

It is with massive enthusiasm that Southern Lord Recordings announces the impending brand new studio LP from long-running, Oregon-based American hardcore punk outfit, Poison Idea. The label comments:

"Over recent months, out of the public eye, the current Poison Idea lineup has been intermittently raiding Audiosiege in Portland for clandestine recording and mastering sessions, covertly harnessing their first new album since 2006's Latest Will And Testament LP.

"Bearing eleven raging new anthems, the new album has been titled Confuse & Conquer. Recorded by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust) and mastered by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise), the record booms with thirty-five minutes of fully ignited hardcore punk in the monolithic style the band has provided for three-and-a-half decades now.

"Though Confuse & Conquer is the first new Poison Idea album to be released since the passing of iconic guitarist Tom 'Pig Champion' Roberts in early 2006, the loved, infectious sound delivered on the band's seminal albums including 1990's Feel The Darkness and 1992's Blank Blackout Vacant blazes through the entire album.
