Best Metal Newcomers Of 2013 Explored: Part 5

For our 2013 year-end awards we included a category for best “newcomers” – those bands that released debut albums well worth hearing.

To help get you acquainted with the best new talent releasing albums you may have missed, we’ll be looking at each of the bands nominated for the “best newcomer” category by our staff. Today, senior reviewer Progressivity_In_All looks at:

Damnation Angels

With one of the coolest names of the incoming class of 2013 bands, Damnation Angels strikes hot at the anvil of heavy metal to forge their sound out of equal parts power and symphonic metal. Hailing from Doncaster, England, a tag-team of brothers handle the drums and guitar: Will and John Graney, Stephen Averill handles bass guitar, and Per Fredrik 'PelleK' Åsly contributes impassioned clean vocals with a powerful voice that can pace about anywhere within a four-octave range with no problem.

The debut album, "Bringer of Light" (reviewed here), landed the band a prestigious opening spot on the main stage of 2013's ProgPower USA festival, where a stateside audience greeted Damnation Angels' debut in the country.

The sound of Damnation Angels is one steeped in tradition, and a damn fine iteration of it at that. When not involved with Damnation Angels, lead vocalist PelleK has his own self-titled project that he writes for, releasing a bombastic Christmas album just before this last Christmas (on the cover art, Santa Claus is riding a giant fire-breathing dragon). Fast on track to become the next Timo Kotipelto, young PelleK is leading Damnation Angels into the future with style into what will be their next record, "The Valiant Fire," which was announced to the ProgPower USA crowd during the exclusive performance of "Finding Requiem" from the album.

If you want to see more of the best new talent 2013 had to offer, be sure to check out the previous entries:

Part 1 - covering Witherscape, Gloryhammer, and Cnoc An Tursa
Part 2 - covering Vista Chino, The Resistance, Raven Lord, Skan, and Lord Dying
Part 3 - covering Avatarium, Gloryhammer, Bane of Winterstorm, Artlantica, and Heavatar
Part 4 - covering Gloomball, Damnations Day, Vista Chino, and Beezelfuzz

Armageddon Rev. 16:16 Signs With Pitch Black

Pitch Black Records is extremely proud to announce the addition of Armageddon Rev. 16:16 to its artist roster and the release of upcoming album, “Sundown on Humanity,” on March 11th, 2014. The label comments:

"Armageddon Rev. 16:16 (aka Armageddon) is the longest living and most respected Cypriot metal band. The scene veterans were formed in 1985 and have kept active since then, mainly with their continuous live presence as well as their demo and EP releases. Of course their renowned 1993 s/t 12” EP needs no introduction as it is now considered a truly hard-to-find, major collector’s item internationally.

"'Sundown on Humanity' is actually the band’s first full length album after all these years, making this album an even more highly anticipated release! The band’s style remains true to its original beginnings of melodic classic heavy metal with some power and progressive elements fused in their style.

"The album line up sees original members Jimmy Mavrommatis on vocals, Kikis A. Apostolou on lead guitar and Elias A. Andreou on rhythm guitars joined by accomplished musicians Nikolas Papaeftychiou on bass and Kerry Elgar on drums (replaced recently by Evangelos Varnava).

"'Sundown on Humanity' includes guest appearances by Bob Katsionis (Firewind) on keyboards and guitar, Nicholas Leptos (Arrayan Path, Warlord), Tasos Karonias (R.U.S.T.) and Andreas Paraschos (Blynd) on vocals. Bob Katsionis also mixed and mastered the album at his own Sound Symmetry Studio in Athens, Greece.

"Featuring 12 tracks, 'Sundown on Humanity' clocks in at just over 58 minutes! Special mention should be made to the closing track of the album, 'Icy Blackness (Kursk),' a tribute to the crew of the Russian submarine 'Kursk' that perished in the summer of 2000. This song includes yet another guest appearance, that of Petros Leptos (Solitary Sabred), who lends his voice to create a haunting spoken intro."

The full track listing is as follows:

1. E.K. 40 (Intro)
2. Human Sundown
3. Shades of Tomorrow
4. Strange Dreams
5. Fallen Angels and Lost Souls

Division: "Live Every Day Like Its The Last One"

Vocalist Scott Stewart of D.C. outfit Division has checked in with the following health update:

"Hey all, this is Scott, as a lot of you know I've been a guest of the Inova Hospital system for the past couple of weeks. This was a pretty good scare, it was Pneumonia, with a blood clot in my right lung, if it hadn't been treated it could have killed me. It required major surgery to dig the infection and residuals out.

"There was about twenty minutes waiting for the ambulance to show up that I'd be a liar if I didn't say that the words 'This is it' didn't cross my mind.

"I'd just like to say thank you for all the love and support sent my way, by our friends and fans. This little thrash band that could has a lot more music left, and I'm honored to be a part of it. More...

Metallica Preparing To Enter The Studio

After performing live in Antarctica and releasing a 3D movie, Metallica is finally gearing up to enter the studio and record a new album.

In an interview with Billboard.com, Kirk Hammett states Metallica will be entering the studio in a few weeks, and he also comments:

"When we start, that's going to be our main priority, and we're pretty excited about it because we've been saying we need to start working on this album, but we've been procrastinating greatly with it. We've pretty much come up with every sort of excuse we can not to start work on the album, but we've run out of excuses, so we pretty much have to start work on it now."

He also goes on to say, "You hear about these bands that are sitting in the studio and they don't have any songs, what are they gonna do? That's not Metallica. Metallica's problem is the total opposite. We have too many ideas. James (Hetfield) has, like, 800 ideas. I have 400. Those number alone are just crazy. That's formidable."

This new, as-yet-untitled album, will follow the disastrous flop "Lulu" and the band's 2008 album "Death Magnetic" (reviewed here).

The Exploited Signs With Nuclear Blast Records

Scottish punk legends The Exploited have announced that they have signed a new record deal with German label, Nuclear Blast, which is home to some of the biggest names in metal and hardcore music.

Although no date has been confirmed as of yet, the band and label have promised that a new Exploited album will see the light of the day this year, making it their first new release since 2003's, "Fuck The System." A statement from frontman Wattie Buchan reads as follows:

"At last, after giving my word four years ago that we would sign to Nuclear Blast, it’s now official! For us it's a big deal to be signing to the biggest indie record company in Europe. One of the main reasons we signed to them is the fact that Marcus, the owner, is a big Exploited fan and I know he will give us 100% backing to make the next album as great as the last ones. PS - It WILL be this year sometime!!!!! Punk's Not Dead."

Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger added: "Having The Exploited sign a deal is a longtime dream coming true. In my youth I listened to hardcore and pPunk almost exclusively and The Exploited have been one of my absolute favorites ever since. Records like Punks Not Dead, Troops Of Tomorrow and later on also Beat The Bastards and Fuck The System have been on heavy rotation constantly. The shows of this band have always been and still are a very special experience. Honest, hard and snotty – just like punk should be. A true highlight for me of course was their performance at the Nuclear Blast HQs on my birthday in 2013. After that the deal has been set via handshakes and we’ve been celebrating till the break of dawn! Welcome to Nuclear Blast guys, punk's not dead!!"

Riot Announces Tribute Shows And Live Lineup

Riot V, the remaining members of US metal pioneers Riot are currently in rehearsals for an upcoming tour of Europe next month in early February. The band is continuing on in honor of the late great founding Riot guitarist Mark Reale who died from complications from Crohns disease in early 2012 and these dates will be tribute shows to the guitarist.

The band states: "The band decided to continue on in his honor and wishes as well as the blessings from the estate of Reale to keep the music and spirit of Riot alive.

"The continuing members decided to alter the name to Riot V (5) as the fifth chapter of the bands long history as well as Todd Michael Hall being the fifth singer following Guy Speranza (Mar. ‘56–Nov. ‘03), Rhett Forrester (Sept. ‘56-Jan. ‘94), Tony Moore and Mike Dimeo in the sum odd 30 years of the bands existence. The band heads to Italy for a string of tribute dates starting in Brescia, Italy ending in Thessaloniki, Greece then returning home to start recording the new record slated for a summer 2014 release. The touring band for these tribute dates are long time members Mike Flyntz on guitar who has been Reales guitar partner for over 25 years and is joined by long time Riot bassist songwriter Don Van Stavern (Thundersteel, Privilege of Power, Immortal Soul), new vocalist Todd Michael Hall (Burning Starr, Reverence) and Riots “Army of One” drummer Frank Gilchriest (Virgin Steele, Liege Lord) steps in as Bobby Jarzombek is fulfilling his duties with Fates Warning and Sebastian Bach. Riot feel that obviously Reale can never be replaced so they have recruited for live guitar duties former student turned teacher at Mike Flyntz’s guitar school in Long Island New York, 26 year old guitar virtuoso Nick Lee."
