Pit Stories: The Miscalculated Stage Dive

Each week we check in with metal bands from around the globe to get their favorite Pit Stories from metal shows.

Today Richard Sjunnesson (The Unguided, ex-Sonic Syndicate) shares this story of a miscalculated stage dive:

This is a story from our old band Sonic Syndicate but still pretty entertaining, and seeing we are 3 persons from that band in The Unguided what the hell!? Anyway, we had this gig in Gothenburg 2007 on a festival called Metaltown. And towards the end of our set the former harsh vocalist of Dead By April, Jimmie Strimell, came up on stage for no particular reason, we barely knew the guy back back then, but I suppose he was just drunk and wanted to fuck about. Anyway; he was roaming around the stage for a while and I remember us being a bit annoyed by the fact. But after a moment he comes up with the brilliant idea to stage dive.

In his drunk mind he supposedly made some miscalculations as from where the crowd was positioned and that solid iron barrier between the stage and the fans. He however took off and made a miraculous leap towards the people, or so he thought, in fact he hit that fucking barrier head on, and made a total fool of himself. All this was of course immortalized by our manager standing in the ditch filming. And everything stupid like that eventually ends up on YouTube right? So now it can be watched below around 03:00 for everyone amusement. A small step for man but a giant fail-leap for Jimmie!

Regarding The Ungudied we are just about to release our sophomore album “Fragile Immortality” and once that’s out we are going to support it by doing some touring here in Scandinavia and a bunch of festivals during the summer. We are also looking into doing some touring around Europe under 2014. Going to be a busy year!

Magnum Posts Details On New Album

Magnum released details on the band's 19th studio release "Escape From the Shadow Garden." The album is set for release on March 19, 2014 (Scandinavia), March 21st (Germany), March 24th (EU) and March 25th (North America) via Steamhammer/SPV Records. It will be made available as a limited digipak edition with bonus material, as a double coloured vinyl LP, standard jewel case CD and download.

Not only musicians and freelance artists know this phenomenon: it’s impossible to deliver top creative performances at the push of a button. You need peace, leisure, and – most of all – a certain amount of serenity to create truly great works of art. “We used to be under permanent pressure from our record companies,” says Magnum mastermind Tony Clarkin. “They kept calling us, demanding hit singles and radio numbers. But that sort of thing doesn’t work on demand. Now we’re with SPV, where it’s a totally different situation. They give us the necessary time and trust us to do the right thing. That’s probably the reason why I enjoy working with Magnum again."

Clarkin’s regained joy in his band is omnipresent on the latest Magnum offering, Escape From The Shadow Garden. Just like his simple yet logical work ethos: “I simply told myself: you’re a passable guitarist, so you should play the guitar. As the band’s guitarist and producer, I have all the freedom I need to create exactly what I feel like creating.” The result of his latest burst of creativity consists of eleven wonderfully melodic rock songs which blend all the typical Magnum ingredients, sounding in a fascinating way both timeless and classic. “This band has certain unmistakable trademarks,” Clarkin explains. “Among them are my feel for melodies and Bob’s unique vocal style." Crusader Added To WOM VII Fest

The Warriors of Metal fest has announced that NWOBHM-inspired heavy metal/thrash act Crusader has been confirmed for this year's festival. The Chicago-based band appeared as an 11th-hour replacement act for last year's pre-fest showcase and will hit the main stage this year in support of its Stormspell Records release "Onward into Battle." The Warriors Of Metal Fest VII will be held at O'Sheckys LIVE in Columbus, Ohio on June 27th and 28th.

Fest organizer Datis Alaee comments: "Crusader was brought to my attention by the former Chicago Thrash Metal guitarist Alex Manske of Degradation who played their penultimate Live show at Warriors Of Metal Fest V Open Air in 2012. Upon contacting and subsequently booking Crusader for our Pre-Fest Showcase, I was really impressed with the way these guys re-arranged their schedules at the last minute so that they could come down to Ohio and rock our socks off.

And, if that was not enough, they stuck around and supported ALL the other bands that played that night. They only left the venue because we were getting kicked out and by then most of the other bands who played that night were already gone. That was very impressive to me so right then and there I vowed to bring them back to Ohio so that they could play on our main Fest stage in 2014!"

Crusader drummer Colin Holmes states: "It's an honor to be able to participate alongside such a great and growing lineup at WOM Fest for the last two years. We're really looking forward to getting on the main stage this year hot on the heels of the release of 'Onward into Battle,' our first full-length album through Stormspell Records."

Avengeus Posts "Hunger" Music Video

Swedish metal act Avengeus released the new music video "Hunger." The song appears on the band's debut self-titled EP, which was issued in 2012.

Avengeus was formed in the beginning of 2011 when guitarists, and school friends, William Svensson and Mattias Svensson got into contact with the vocalist Niclas Blomberg. Influenced by the heavy rhythms of Metallica and Pantera, and the dynamic harmonies of Iron Maiden, they started to write music determined to find a bass player and a drummer to complete the band. When drummer Linus Pettersson joined, influenced by the progressive drums of Dream Theater and Meshuggah, he colored the heavy music with his technical style. Contributing with his great talent, bass player Eirik Lund, influenced by Rex Brown (Pantera) and Jason Newstedt (Metallica), joined the band with only one month left to Avengeus first performance.

After playing together for six months, the sound slowly began to take form. With the song Take My Life, they took on a heavier path. Mixing heavy rhythms, dynamic melodies, progressive drums and Niclas intense vocals, Avengeus has found their sound in heavy dynamic metal.
