“THAT’S NOT METAL!”
One of the most oft-hurled accusations among metalheads, to a point where people waste inordinate amounts of time bickering over this crucial distinction on which one’s very identity seems to depend, usually online.
Why? What’s hanging in the balance here? For let’s face it: at the end of the day, this is music we’re talking about – an art form, subjective by definition, and utterly dependent on individual taste. While arguments over politics and religion can get pretty silly, the importance attached to such views is still far more understandable than the absurd fervor with which many fans defend metal’s imagined gates of purity.
For all the fun metal has to offer – heck, I wouldn’t be writing about it were I not an avid fan – its overall fanbase is popular music’s most self-loathing and self-destructive, collectively and metaphorically speaking. In fact, many metalheads may take issue with my inclusion of metal in the “popular music” category, which itself is, I believe, the root of the problem.
Examining the sometimes-bizarre pathology of metal’s less-than-savory fanhood has long been an interest of mine, and while I don’t have the space (and you certainly don’t have the time) to unravel all my thoughts here, I will submit this: “That’s Not Metal,” quite often, is a smokescreen, a self-deluding attempt to marginalize an album, band, or entire subgenre one doesn’t like or doesn’t feel represents him.
It is a cultural form of denial. For when one identifies himself as Metal – and it’s a strong, dominant form of expression – all it takes is a ladle of insecurity to send him scurrying to defend the uniqueness and purity of his very identity.
I will now evaluate a pivotal development in metal history that may help explain the origins of this splintering trend within the genre. More...
Monte Pittman, former bassist of Prong, has released "Before The Mourning Sun" on ITunes. The track was lifted from his forthcoming Metal Blade Records release "The Power of Three." Go here to listen to the track.

Apostolum today premieres the new track "Unworthiness and Decay," which can be heard at GunShyAssassin.com here.

1. Intro (Light Into The Void)
2. Unworthiness And Decay
3. Higher Planes Of Existence
4. Debris Of Perception
5. Less Than A Step
6. Gleam Of Lucidity
Guitarist Matteo comments: "Musically, the new album is not the result of the choice to move in a direction rather than another; the entire writing process took place in a very spontaneous and natural way. We did not feel the need to make drastic changes to our sound - forcing a change is likely to remove a band from its purest form. Composing so instinctively, I think we approached, as never before, our essence and the songs honestly represent what Apostulum are today. The only things we set from the beginning of the creative process have been the ones to pay greater attention to the arrangements and songs structures, and improve as performers in the knowledge that we can rely on better equipment in the studio."
Continuing, he reveals, "Lyrically, the album is not a concept, but there is a common element that somehow combines the lyrics of individual songs, which is the current strengthening ourselves to a pessimistic view on the future of the human race and planet earth. Hence, the meaning of the title Winds of Disillusion - the impotence of the human being in front of the occurrence of external destructive natural events together with the inability to suppress the growing of inner feelings of total disillusionment, noting bitterly the inability to be able to remedy a relentless physical and moral decline...a strong emotional wind that sweeps away any hope from the human soul. Ultimately, I believe that Winds Of Disillusion is not only a big step forward compared to Anedonia, but the real Apostolum masterpiece." More...

Philadelphia-based Nothing is proud to reveal details on the band's debut LP, "Guilty of Everything," which will be released on March 3rd in the U.K. via Relapse Records.
Watch the album trailer below and stream the first single from the record, "Dig." A music video for the next single, "Bent Nail," was filmed with director Don Argott (Art of The Steal, Last Days Here) will be available soon. Relapse Records also comments on the band:
"Nothing was formed in 2011 by Domenic Palermo. Previously Palermo was the brains behind the early 2000's hardcore/punk act Horror Show. in 2002 Horror Show was put on hold after Palermo was incarcerated for a stabbing that eventually led to a 2 year prison sentence. Upon his return Palermo would take a lengthy hiatus from music.
"In 2011 Palermo released a demo tape titled Poshlost under the moniker Nothing After several attempts at constructing a solid lineup for the band Palermo met Brandon Setta. Setta would bring a lush, rich soundscape and a fresh approach to Palermo's vision for Nothing. Setta and Palermo would handle the writing for the next release, a very rare 12" EP that was released on Japanese boutique label Big Love Records called Suns And Lovers (A play off of the D.H. Lawernce book). It was limited to 300 copies and the bands share was donated back to the label for a Tsunami Relief Charity.
"The next release, Downward Years To Come was a 5 song EP and was recorded at the Rubber Tracks Studio in Brooklyn with Kyle 'Slick' Johnson. The record was released by Baltimore Label A389 Records in November 2012. Written by Palermo and Setta, the concept behind Downward Years To Come was a dedication to several different poets who had taken their own lives. Setta and Palermo would again head into the studio, this time with Jeff Zeigler at Uniform Recordings to write their debut LP, Guilty of Everything and sign with Relapse Records." More...
Children of Bodom has a new lyric video out for "Halo of Blood," which is the title track off the album of the same name (reviewed here).
The new video is released on the heels of an upcoming tour kicking off in February. Full dates for the North American trek are available after the jump.
Slough Feg has launched the title track from brand new album, "Digital Resistance." The record was recorded with Justin Weis (who produced the album with vocalist/guitarist Mike Scalzi) at Trakworx in South San Francisco from January-October 2013 and marks the band's first new studio album since 2010's "The Animal Spirits."
When asked if the new album was a concept album, singer and vocalist Mike Scalzi explained: "It has somewhat of a consistent lyrical theme that runs through several of the songs, but not every song--- it is not a concept album in the sense that our 'Traveller' album is."
Check out the new track below, or pre-order the album over at this location. Mike Scalzi elaborates on the concept behind the title track:
"This song represents a last ditch effort to escape the inevitable. There will be no victory over technology-- nor should there be in a broader sense--- but I do fear what we are becoming. Biological evolution moves so slowly that we cannot perceive it. But social and moral evolution may come in great jolts or leaps. This can be dangerous to the preservation the species, biologically and morally/socially. But it's also just fun to sing about 'killing technology' (like that other band from Canada did a long time ago). It's a very dramatic subject. That's why I call it 'Voi-Vaudeville.'" More...
The eleventh studio album from power metal icons Gamma Ray is nearing completion. Titled "Empire Of The Undead," it is the record that almost wasn't.
The album was penned throughout 2013 with Eike Freese at the mixing desk supporting the work of bass player and co-writer, Dirk Schlaechter. The band had just landed in South America with tour mates Helloween when some harrowing news reached Kai Hansen and crew: Hammer Studio, the band's home and rehearsal space, had burned down leaving nearly all its contents in ruins, with the exception of the tapes from the nearly-finished new studio album.
Upon returning home Gamma Ray evaluated the losses and decided to move on. "If this could not stop us, nothing ever will," joked a light-hearted Hansen, adding that, "We got rid of a lot of shit that we gathered there. Unfortunately, a lot of good equipment as well. Anyhow, we look towards the future, we saved the production and we can continue now in this new place. By mid-January we should be done with the work on this album."
The title track, "Empire Of The Undead," has appeared on the single/EP "Master Of Confusion," which was released last year and served as precursor to the forthcoming full-length.
"Empire Of The Undead" will be released in North America on CD, LP and digitally via Armoury Records in conjunction with earMusic late this Spring. Further details to be revealed in the coming weeks. In the meantime, view a video message Kai Hansen below. More...
