Theater Of The Absurd Posts Music Video

New York-based avant-garde progressive metallers Theater of the Absurd recently released a new music video for “Rising Tides in Still Water,” a song that comes off the band's first full-length album “The Myth Of Sisyphus,” released in December by Graviton Music Services.

Directed by Brian Ruppert, the video follows the story of a man whose will is tested again and again. The images onscreen are meant to match the intensity of the music, and to tell the story of the song in a metaphorical sense. Check it out below.

"The Myth of Sisyphus" was mixed by Jim Morris (Death, Savatage, Iced Earth) at Morrisound Studios and mastered by Maor Appelbaum (Cynic, Therion, Fates Warning). More...

Brutality Will Prevail Announces Album Release

U.K. outfit Brutality Will Prevail will unleash new full-length, "Suspension Of Consciousness," on April 7th in Europe and on April 8th in North America (digital only) via Siege Of Amida/Century Media Records.

The album, the band's fourth full-length, will mark the recorded debuts of front-man Louis Gauthier and drummer Craig Reynolds, who joined the BWP cult during the international touring cycle for 2012's "Scatter The Ashes."

November 2013 finally saw the quintet - completed by guitarists Ash Gray and Nick Rix, and bassist Jordan Murray - entering the Monnow Valley Studios. Drummer Reynolds recalls: "We recorded through amazing vintage equipment. The entire album was tracked in just 6 days with the intensity of a live show; there was none of this computer reliant, digi-fix-this-fix-that shit that today's heavy scene has become so polluted with."

Once the tracking session was complete, Converge's Kurt Ballou was tasked with mixing duties, bringing his unique, inimitable snarl to a recording already bursting with feral aggression.

"This album is the first time we haven't held ourselves back in any way," says guitarist Ash Gray. "It still has some hallmarks of the classic BWP sound, but we also really pushed ourselves to progress and try new things, and no one more so than Louis (Gauthier, vocals) - his performance really shines on this album. There are definitely some surprises throughout the album though, and in many ways we are a different band now than before. The past year, culminating in this album, is about more than just a line-up change, this is a fresh start." More...

Black Star Riders To Record New Album

2013 saw the release of the Black Star Riders debut album, "All Hell Breaks Loose," and the band also toured throughout Europe and Scandinavia supporting the release.

Now it is time for the guys to continue with this momentum and create a follow-up album. Scott Gorham sums it up: "The fan response has been better then we could have hoped. I haven’t had this much fun in years!"

When it comes to the team behind the soundboard, Black Star Riders decided to change things up this time around. Taking over the production reins will be Def Leppard front man Joe Elliott. Adding to the dream team will be long time Leppard sound guru Ronan McHugh.

Ricky Warwick chimes in on the reason Joe was tapped for this album: “Joe Elliott's passion, enthusiasm for music, as a fan, artist and friend is unquestionable and Ronan McHugh is a phenomenal engineer. Personally having worked with these guys before, it was a no brainer when they said they would like to produce the new BSR album. We are confident that this will be a huge leap forward in the evolution of BSR.” More...

Cauldron Black Ram Announces Album Release

The Cauldron Black Ram horde emerges yet once more to release "Stalagmire" in North America on April 1st in North America and in Europe April 4th as part of the 20 Buck Spin armada. The following press release was also issued about the album:

"Being the third of albums to sail under the banner of CBR, the new recording is a commanding effort of sludgy crossboned black death metal and slimy, rum-sodden doomed debauchery. The brigands from the far side of the world prove well versed in the execution of this unfair trade, delivering knavish punishment unto unprepared ears in the form of Stalagmire.

"Bear witness to the sordid melody at the opening of the 'Maw' and be ushered violently into cave where 'luckless beggars only want for open sky'. Doomed seafarers spew forth 'A Litany Of Sailors Sins' wherein their anthemic call 'What dire straights we are in' foreshadows the final echo of men given to lust for plunder. And that old reprobate from earlier days of the black ram, Black Douglass again here appears in 'The Devil's Trotters.'

"This scurrilous tale, Stalagmire, puts Cauldron Black Ram in league with similar ugly contemporaries who pay heed to old, distasteful gods and outlaw tradition but yet forge a singular path of their own making. Be it black, death, doom or thrash, all goes into the strange brew mixed in the Cauldron Black Ram. Horrible, horrible end for ye who enter thus."

1. Fork Through Pitch
2. Maw
3. Discarded Death
4. A Litany Of Sailors Sins
5. Bats
6. Cavern Fever
7. From Whence The Old Skull Came
8. The Devil's Trotters

Castle Gearing Up To Record Album

Female-fronted doom rockers Castle will soon return to the studio to record a new album, with producer Billy Anderson (Sleep, Neurosis) again overseeing the sessions. The band commented:

"The next Castle record will be a culmination of the last two years of our life -- a year and a half on the road in support of 'Blacklands' and the last six months holed up writing. The demos are done, the studio is booked and we were lucky enough to get Billy Anderson back to produce. The new record picks up where we left off with 'Blacklands' and before that 'In Witch Order.' There's a lot to sink your teeth into on the new record -- killer riffs, big vocals -- and if anything, it's about trying to harness the power that comes from playing night after night. It's going to sound huge and we can't wait to get it out."

The as-yet-untitled release is expected to be released in the late spring; stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks. Castle has also announced a Western European tour with U.K. doom group Conan throughout April, along with select support from The Gravitators. Dates as follows: More...

Unearthing The Metal Underground In Bangladesh

With a population of 160 million people, Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The country's attitude of cultural tolerance (Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Buddhists live side-by-side) is reflected in their tastes in metal (well, at least in this article).

This Unearthing segment includes three bands of disparate styles from the city of Dhaka. The wide scope of sounds documented in the following video includes death metal, black metal, atmospheric, neo-classical, thrash, and progressive, many derived from a sole band!

Artcell

Mostly unknown in the West, Artcell is one of the most celebrated rock acts of Bangladesh. They play arenas, appear on TV shows and have over 479,000 likes on their Facebook page. In addition to the Sabbath-thy heaviness of debut "Onnoshomoy," Artcell has an affinity for melody and acoustic guitar. I'm not sure what the band sings about because all lyrics are sung in Bengali, but his voice is harmonious and passionate. Whatever he's saying, their crowds respond well. As with most prog bands, Artcell has an outstanding bass sound, very warm.

At The Gates Announces New Album

Seminal Swedish metallers At The Gates are back! Following two cryptic teaser vidoes, the pioneers of the "Gothenburg style" melodic death metal sound have officially announced that they are working on a comeback studio album with the classic line-up of their latest masterpiece effort from 1995, "Slaughter Of The Soul."

The album is expected to be released worldwide by the end of 2014 via new label partner Century Media Records. The band comments:

"So, here we are almost 24 years since the birth of At The Gates, and some 18+ years since our latest album 'Slaughter Of The Soul.' A lot of years have passed and we have embarked on some life-changing reunion tours and shows the last couple of years.

"So, why make a new album you might ask, and why now? Well, what we learned from the last couple of years hanging out and playing shows together, is that we enjoy what we do to the fullest extent. We love playing music together, and we love to hang out as friends. But, as a musician, we constantly write new music. It's a huge part of our identities.

"We are fully aware that we have made some very drastic statements in interviews as well as the closing words on the DVD about the longevity of At The Gates, but things change, situations change and people change. When Anders sent the first song last summer, we had zero expectations of the outcome. We only knew one thing - That it sounded amazing! At the time we weren't even sure there would be an album, but as things progressed, more songs came into existence, and we knew we were on to something great. More...
