Pit Stories: Riotgod Talks Pit Etiquette
Each week we check in with rock and metal bands from across the globe to get their favorite mosh pit memories, and this week's Pit Story comes courtesy of Riotgod vocalist Sunshine.
Check out Sunshine's tale below of experiencing a Flotsam and Jetsam show under the influence where the night's main entertainment came from an out of control skinhead:
This is kinda peripheral, but here we go: No matter what pit I have had the distinction of being in, whether while seeing the Cro-Mags or Agnostic Front at L'Amour back in the day or even in unexpected pits that break out at festivals during bands you would not think bring that out (see “Alice in Chains – Man in the Box”), I have had my share of adrenaline. Exciting but not dickish violent, that is not my scene.
As a musician – sometimes the pit breaks over onto the stage. One time a guy grabbed my mike and was sucked back in to the mosh, getting that back was a trip, kinda like fishing and rodeo at once. My audience based pit experience, it is something I deal with, as most do, to get close to the stage. Some guys are the kind who have to get in the middle of it, arms swinging, pushing and dealing.
A side note: I love it at a poorly attended local show, when ONE GUY is the pit. Anyway, I have always been a musician first and dealt with the pit. I am and have been always vigilant – helping people up – pit etiquette all that – see the Wikihow entry on moshing - can you believe that article, wow! And for this refer to #5: “...How brutal are the individuals bouncing around this particular pit? Are people just having fun, or are they going for blood? Know the difference between those who are ‘slam dancing’ and the idiot high school jock who's running around smashing people in the face with his knuckles...”
I always pride myself on being aware of what is going down, casing the situation for that one guy or group of dopes who surely will makeinto l:-(ss than. And though having been in more than a few pits of various sizes, as time went on, I was relatively unscathed. But... I always had a feeling that one night who-knows-what would happen but “The Pit” the scene would somehow bite me. Like a snake handler, one day you WILL be bitten, no matter how careful you are.
It was the Flotsam and Jetsam / Leeway show back in the day, at the “new” Ritz in NYC, the old Studio 54. I found a blog that described the night, someone else's take on the night: “The bill that night was Mind Over Four, Repulsion (before they became known as Type O Negative), hometown heroes Prong and Leeway (who I immediately realized most of the NY hardcore and metal kids were there for), and headliners Flotsam & Jetsam. I was nonplussed by the insanity we faced, the sheer physicality of young men with something to prove.”More...

Warthrone Finishes Work On New Album
Virginia's Warthrone is completing work on debut full-length album entitled "Venomassacre," which is slated for an April 2014 release. Ex-Dying Fetus drummer, current Warthrone drummer/guitarist Erik Sayenga comments:
"Warthrone has been on a slight hiatus but is now back in full gear to release this new slab of blackened death metal brutality. Our debut ep was released in 2005 and with this new release we have been able to really refine our sound. Expect brutal metal that may please fans from Cannibal Corpse or Napalm Death, to Dark Funeral or Marduk. We don't like to label ourselves just one style of extreme metal and we are a huge fan of black metal and all death metal, so the mixture of the 2 just naturally comes out in Warthrone's music."
The "Venomassacre" album will be released on the band's own label Ghostorm Records and will feature 8 new tracks recorded at Sayenga's own Bloodbath Studios. Further, "Venomassacre" will feature a special guest appearance on a song with additional vocals by Beist of the Norwegian symphonic black metal band Krake.

Ghoul Announces "Weapons Of Mosh Destruction" Tour
Ghoul - the hooded hooligans of Creepsylvania - are bursting blood vessels to finally announce the second installment of the Weapons Of Most Destruction Tour.
Set to launch this April, team Ghoul will lay waste to seven unsuspecting metropolises throughout the West Coast alongside hardcore thrash mutant accomplices, Iron Reagan, and experimental punk/hardcore rippers, Occultist.
Following their pillage, the band will spread ghoulish delectables all over Oakland headlining the first night of this year's edition of Brainsqueeze Fest. Full details on the trek are available below.
Proclaims Ghoul from the band's underground headquarters: "Loyal numbskulls, the Weapons Of Mosh Destruction Tour is rearing its ugly head again, and Ghoul is looking forward to burning your towns, raping your pets, and drinking your beer as we unmercifully bombard the West Coast of your United States on our way to the Tankcrimes Brainsqueeze in Oakland, California. In the unlikely event that you are lucky enough to survive the blitzkrieg assault of Iron Reagan and Occultist, you will be decapitated and disemboweled by Ghoul's razor sharp riffs, and after that, our razor sharp razors. All survivors will be brought back to the catacombs in cages, where Ghoul will keep you alive on a cocktail of morphine and energy drinks while we carve away chunks of your flesh to devour while you watch in horror... I may have said too much. Come to the show! Nothing bad will happen to you!" More...

Savage Messiah Releases New Music Video
London's heavy metal act Savage Messiah has released a new music video for the track "Hellblazer," featuring London contortionist Pixie Le Knot (Game of Thrones Season 3, The Devil Inside). "Hellblazer" tells a tale of power, religion, and corrupted innocence through an ancient Illuminati ritual. Check it out below.
Savage Messiah front man Dave Silver comments: "As we get ever closer to the release date for 'The Fateful Dark,' we're very pleased to unveil our latest promo for the track 'Hellblazer.' Musically, this is a solid representation of the Savage Messiah sound: melodic, heavy, catchy and with guitar solos galore!
"We tried to invoke that classic Uriah Heep-esque groove with this track so we hope you dig it! And talking of invoking, the video depicts us conducting a kind of exorcism ritual of sorts where we draw the evil pope from contortionist and Game of Thrones actress Pixie Le Knot! We want to extend our thanks to director Tom Walsh and all involved in creating this video!"
"Hellblazer" is taken from Savage Messiah's upcoming album, "The Fateful Dark," which is due to be released on March 10th in Europe via Earache Records and on March 18th in the USA via Century Media/Earache Records. More...

Darkness Divided Announces New Tour Dates
Fresh off signing to Victory Records, Darkness Divided is now hitting the road with Silent Planet for the Music for Good Tour, presented by HM Magazine. The tour begins March 21st, with full details available below.
Vocalist Gerard Mora comments, “Music for Good is the slogan for HM Magazine. I pitched using it to David for different reasons, but I find it very fitting for what we, Silent Planet, and HM Magazine stand for. We all come from different backgrounds, but we all have a call to promote music that spreads a good message in a sometimes dark world. My hope would be that on this tour that every show ends up being something more than a couple hours of pitting and screaming. I hope it ends up being a personal experience that kids can take home and realize that they are loved by someone greater than we could ever imagine.”
With an album to follow later this year, 2014 is set to be a breakout year for Darkness Divided. Catch the band live: More...

Architects To Tour With Letlive.

"We can't wait to get out with our boys in letlive. we're all big fans of the band as musicians and people! Looking forward to getting back out to America and playing news song from lost forever lost together! Bring your stage diving shoes lets party!"
Jason Aalon Butler of letlive. also shares: "We've been a band for nearly a decade and this is our 2nd proper United States headliner. That being the case, it is a rather significant and pivotal endeavor at once. Now that you know that, you can safely assume how important this tour is to us as well as who we share it with. I've noticed many comments polluting our considerably juvenile cyber spaces inquiring things like 'why would this band tour with this band?' and some other unwarranted entitled opinion on what bands should or should not do with THEIR art. I can sincerely say to you that letlive. plays music for people that want to listen to music with no real concern for specified or claimed genre, while playing that music alongside others that will do the same. In this case, those people go by the monikers of Architects, Glass Cloud, and I the mighty. Call it what you will, we'll keep calling it art. Holler."
Architects will release new album "Lost Forever, Lost Together" on March 11th via Epitaph, recorded in Sweden at Studio Fredman with producers Fredrik Nordström and Henrik Udd. Catch the band's live: More...

Fallen Fate Posts "I Welcome The Dead" Video
After posting a lyric video for "Blackened Within," Fallen Fate has unleashed a first official music video off the recently released album "Into the Black."
Choosing track "I Welcome the Dead" to make the assault, the video is loosely based around band's blistering live performance, and all the while there is the lingering presence of Vespa, the tortured soul behind the band’s concept for "Into the Black."
Vocalist and guitarist Lee Skinner had this to say about Vespa: "She chose a life without faith and over time became possessed by a demon. The demon slowly took over her body and ultimately led her to kill herself and her family. The drive behind the concept is to empower the listener to decide whether she was possessed by the Devil, as she has no savior in her life, or if she was possessed by God, punishing her for her lack of faith." Mayhem To Release New Album
The Norwegian black metal legends in Mayhem have returned. Metal's most infamous band will release an as-yet-untitled new album, and follow up to 2007's "Ordo Ad Chao," later this year.
In anticipation of the new album, Mayhem is streaming a new track, titled "Psywar," which can be heard below courtesy of Decibel Magazine. The following press release was also issued about the band:
"2014 sees Mayhem welcome the 30th anniversary of the single most notorious and important band in the history of black metal. With the band's four revolutionary full-lengths, a legacy of boundless extremity, and an ethic rooted firmly in the principle of no compromise, Mayhem are the archetype that three generations of black metal bands follow as law. As they enter their 30th year, Mayhem reign as kings of the underground; ensuring that their shadow will be cast not just over the first 30 years of an entire genre to date, but for the next 30 years to come as well. Mayhem is the Alpha and the Omega of black metal.
"With an active new lineup at helm, Mayhem's new full length showcases a band who follow their own path in extreme music, one that is equally violent and turbulent.
"Mayhem will also release 'Psywar' as a limited edition, stand-alone 7" EP. The 'Psywar' 7" is backed 'From Beyond Event Horizon,' an unreleased track taken from the band's 2012 Budapest sessions, and will come in different editions featuring art from Zbigniew Bielak and Costin Chioreanu.
