The 70,000 Ton Hangover

Can 21st-century metalheads ever be truly happy if they’re not bitching about something on the web?

The pointless arguments over bands’ music, which mostly boil down to matters of taste, are exhausting enough. And there’s a simple solution to dissatisfaction with a particular tour package: stay home and masturbate.

But complaining about festival lineups? Really?

I have some news for you, sport: the only Perfect Metal Festival Lineup, which exists only in an individual’s imagination, attracts an audience of one. Your Perfect Lineup is different from mine.

There needs to be a common denominator, a compromise. I don’t know about you, but when I’m not basking in my serene, elite metal knowledge via trve and righteous, smarmy and self-congratulatory screeds on Facebook, I actually enjoy watching a live show in the company of others. And in reaching the compromise to make that social event possible, everyone’s Perfect Lineup inevitably becomes less than perfect. Such is the transition from fantasy to reality.

In the process, like small children finally realizing that vegetables aren’t going to kill them, we learn that the reality is almost always better than the fantasy (discounting the fact that the latter doesn’t exist). MTV’s Butt-Head once mused on this very issue: “If nothing sucked, and everything was, like, cool all the time… how would you KNOW it was cool?”

At a several-day festival with dozens of bands on multiple stages, we NEED at least a handful of acts we know we can ignore. Otherwise, think of the immense pressure to be constantly on our feet, rushing back and forth, watching every equally important band with rapt attention. Even if possible, it would be simply overwhelming. We’d pass out from exhaustion and forget to enjoy ourselves. Plus, the truly special acts wouldn’t seem as special.

Last summer at Tuska Open Air in Helsinki, rather than bitch about the injustice of Bring Me The Horizon directly preceding Anthrax, I was grateful for the chance to relax and have a beer before catching a show by one of the Big Four. More...

Sacrilegium Re-Releasing "Wicher"

Sacrilegium's "Wicher" is due out in a new edition by Pagan Records this coming March 6th, 2015. The label had this to say:

"Sacrilegium’s 'Wicher' represents the true meaning of a quintessential obscure gem. Originally released in 1996, the Polish band’s forward-thinking approach to pagan black metal was extremely influential in paving the way for their compatriots.

"Drawing from the keyboard-leanings of Limbonic Art and the vast legacy of Bathory, the trio hammered out a début album filled with dark Slavonic paganism. Nearly 20 years later, cult label Pagan Records are re-releasing this long-since sold out classic on double-gatefold vinyl, with new artwork, photos and lyrics in the 16-page booklet.

"For those who remember the glorious 90s and the Polish bands who stood at the forefront, this record is a perfect reminder of that time. For those that missed this first time round, Wicher is an essential part of education in the Polish black metal scene.

"The pagan traditions infused in these melancholic hymns is almost palpable, from the lyrics such as in 'Wicher Falami Ognia' to the very fibre of the riffs across the record. The record caps off with a bonus track, taken from their Jesienne Szepty split with North, which may be less refined than the album tracks but still possesses the same intense iciness throughout. Intense but required listening for any black metal fanatic." More...

Suffering Mind Releases "Messiah Of Extermination"

Suffering Mind just released the "Messiah Of Extermination" album via Give Praise Records, with a teaser available below. The label also comments:

"Suffering Mind has been explosive and vocal in the grind scene. Putting fourth a very unqiue and straight-forward blast set, that is punishing as well as being very upfront in their messages.

"They combine a assualting 'DIY' grindcore sound, blaring over punk and crust tones. They bring to mind sounds of Excruciating Terror and pure grindcore acts.

"This LP combines their splits with Scourge Schematic and Asshammer. It is presented on a 1 sided LP, with a etching on the B side."

Gruesome Posts New Album Trailer

Gruesome is a debilitating death metal faction featuring members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation, and Derketa.

The collective was borne out of guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey (Exhumed) and drummer Gus Rios' (Malevolent Creation) mutual involvement with the Death To All tours -- Harvey serving as front man for the original nine-member mini-tour and Rios performing "Baptized In Blood" and working with DTA drummer Sean Reinert on the following U.S. tour, where Exhumed filled in as support on a several dates.

The pair stayed in touch and discussed their mutual love (obsession?) for the early half of Death's catalog. After deliberating and ultimately discarding the idea of putting together another incarnation of DTA to focus exclusively on the first two albums, Harvey half-jokingly suggested writing their own songs in that vein. It wasn't long before the idea gained traction, and the "band" had five songs written.

With Harvey composing in California, Rios recruited Possessed guitarist Daniel Gonzalez and Derketa bassist Robin Mazen to record the material in Florida, while Harvey tracked his vocals on the West Coast. The result is eight-track debut "Savage Land," a truly gruesome slab of late-'80s/early-'90s Florida-styled death metal.

Elaborates Harvey, "We had such a blast writing and recording this album, I just hope people enjoy it half as much as I enjoyed doing it. It was a great experience working with my friends in Florida and getting to write and record my take on the Death sound. I'm beyond happy with the way everything came out and I hope people take it as the loving, respectful piece of work that it is. More...

Abiotic Announces New Album Release

South Florida's Abiotic emerged in 2010 with a flourish of riffs, solos, and technical breakdowns that culminated in the release of a debut EP in 2011.

"A Universal Plague" set the stage for the band's first few years of existence. What was immediately apparent: guitarists John Matos and Matt Mendez formed an absolutely lethal guitar duo, and bassist Alex Vasquez's finger style bass playing provided an athletic sounding low end that helped to vault Abiotic to the forefront of the underground touring circuit.

Abiotic then signed to Metal Blade Records and released debut album, "Symbiosis," which was followed by regional and national touring.

By the end of 2014, Abiotic had re-tooled the lineup by adding vocalist Travis Bartosek and drummer Brent Phillips. The quintet was more than ready to record sophomore full length, "Casuistry." The first song from "Casuistry" entitled "Cast into the Depths" - which features Dying Fetus front man John Gallagher on guest vocals - is available for streaming below. The new album will drop April 21st.

In the late summer of 2014, Abiotic ventured to Basement Recordings with acclaimed producer Jamie King. The collaboration would prove fruitful. Guitarist John Matos elaborates: "Working with Jamie was unlike any other studio experience we've had before. Tracking with someone who's produced bands like Between the Buried and Me, Wretched, and The Contortionist put our minds at ease and allowed us to put total trust in Jamie to achieve the sound we were looking for. It made the experience so comfortable and relaxed that we were really able to explore and create without boundaries. I think that's something that can be felt with this record." More...

Jared Dines Parodies 10 Ways to Hold Your Guitar

Having parodied stage acting of guitarists just starting out in his clip "10 ways to hold a guitar (for beginners)", Jared Dines’ deconstruction of metal musicians continues with the below video "10 Ways to Hold a Guitar" (for advanced guitarists).

Just in case you have missed the first clip we have both of them for your enjoyment below, showing Jared Dines (vocalist of Dissimulator) hilariously imitating the distinctive ways in which various guitarists stand and move on-stage. And as usual Dines’ observations are spot-on.

Godflesh And Onslaught Join Bloodstock Bill

The organizers of the Bloodstock Festival are excited to announce their third headliner for the Sophie Lancaster Stage, and a slew of other Sophie stage bands for the August 2015 event.

Industrial outfit Godflesh is to headline Sunday night on the Sophie Lancaster stage. Frontman Justin Broadrick comments: “Godflesh is thrilled to be playing a very metal UK festival! We don’t get asked to play many, as we’re often viewed as not ‘real’ metal enough, or we’re generally seen as outsiders, which we are, thank you. That doesn’t mean we don’t like to be invited to be a real metal band once in a while and especially in the Derbyshire countryside! Thank you Bloodstock!“

British thrash stalwarts Onslaught also join the Sophie stage line-up on Sunday. The band is celebrating the 30th anniversary in 2015 of debut album, "Power From Hell," with a special EP on the cards for release and special anniversary merch available.

Self-appointed "caveman battle doom" 3-piece, Conan will crash Friday’s Sophie bill. Having recently returned from a string of shows in Australia and mainland Europe, Conan is prepping for a slot on the Maryland DeathFest this summer, before bringing an unholy wall of sound to Catton Park in August.

Greek southern-tinged heavy rockers Planet Of Zeus step up for a Sophie stage slot on Saturday, while London’s blackened doomsters Bast also join the Friday bill. The currently announced lineup for the 2015 edition is as follows: More...
