Chiefs Posts New Track "Vovi"

Chiefs' debut album, "Tomorrow's Over," comes out on CD/DD next week via Roosevelt Row Records, with a vinyl release via Battleground Records to follow soon this Spring.

Today, The Obelisk is hosting a stream of the record's second single, "Vovi." Check out the low-end chimerical madness below.

Chiefs originally began as a two-piece back in January of 2012 in Phoenix, AZ, but after years of releasing demos, touring and playing often around the Phoenix Valley, the duo made the decision to relocate to San Diego, CA. Shortly after, Chiefs released a four-song demo entitled "Buffalo Roam," and did numerous short west-coast tours to support it. Eventually the group became a three-piece with the permanent addition of bassist Jeff Podeszwik, who filled out the low-end of the band and transformed its sound.

Sunday Old School: BMHM Part 4 - Impaled Nazarene

Black Metal History Month has returned for a fourth installment! This year will see our special time analyze some of the roots of the genre, as well as some of the bleakest and obscene bands to fly the flag of darkness.

As we saw in last week’s Sunday Old School covering Marduk, Norway was not the only Scandinavian country contributing significantly to the black metal scene, though it is no doubt still considered the home of the genre. Yet, Norway and Sweden were not alone, as the Swedes other neighbours were also about to launch their own scene, one which was given greater attention thanks to a particular band from the city of Oulu. A band by the striking name of, Impaled Nazarene.

The group was formed twenty five years ago by vocalist and sole constant member, Mika Luttinen, guitarists, Ari Holappa and Mika Pääkkö, bass player, Harri Halonen and drummer, Kimmo "Sir" Luttinen, the brother of frontman, Mika. They were forged with a fierce sense of independence and aggression, evidenced by their ambition to stand out from what other Scandinavian bands were doing. Whilst bands from Sweden such as Marduk were welcomed into the black metal scene in Norway, Impaled Nazarene became known for their hatred of it, though they would eventually bury the hatchet in the frost, with Luttinen claiming that he made peace with Mayhem guitarist, Euronymous before his murder. Metallica: "Some Kind of Monster" Co-Director Dead

Bruce Sinofsky, who co-produced the Metallica documentary "Some Kind Of Monster", has died after a battle with diabetes. He was only 58 years old. Sinofsky and Joe Berlinger also filmed the 1994 movie "Paradise Lost" on the "West Memphis Three", a documentary about three teenagers convicted of murder.

States Metallica: "We lost a valued member of our family today as award-winning filmmaker Bruce Sinofsky passed away this morning. Bruce, along with Joe Berlinger, was the architect of our film "Some Kind Of Monster". Smart, funny and dedicated, Bruce was with us almost every day in the early 2000s and was an integral part of helping us to navigate the rough waters during those times. Although not very welcomed at times, he was there through some of the darkest times of Metallica. He became a dedicated comfort and visual lifeboat, while objectively observing the unraveling and rebuilding of our inner and outer selves. We admired Bruce and Joe's work in "Brother's Keeper", but, of course, were blown away by what Bruce and Joe accomplished with the "Paradise Lost" trilogy of films. With their relentless work and attention to detail, Bruce and Joe's films drew attention to the miscarriages of justice associated with the trial of three teens accused of murder and helped to lead to their eventual release from prison after over 18 years behind bars. After "Some Kind Of Monster", Bruce went on to do more brilliant work on the Sundance channel series "Iconoclasts" and History's "10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America", along with numerous other film and television projects. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bruce's family and friends. We will miss Bruce. A courageous man with deep empathy and wisdom who wasn't afraid to dig deep to tell the story. RIP Bruce."
