Norylsk Signs To Selfmadegod Records

Norylsk from Wloclawek, Poland just signed a deal with Selfmadegod Records to release a second full-length album. The grind four piece is currently in the studio to record "Catholic Dictatorship," slated for Summer 2015 release.

Lukass (drums) comments on the new album: “’Catholic Dictatorship’ includes 14 new songs of solid grindcore right in the face of clergy. Like the previous album we are recording this one in the studio that belongs to Michal Grabowski (Feto In Fetus).”

Selfmadegod Records comments: "Norylysk plays pure and ferocious grindcore in the vein of early Agathocles, early Napalm Death, Warsore, Insect Warfare, and the likes.

"The band has started mid 2008 when Kwiat, Budyn and Tv met LukaSS. They had an idea to create grindcore band. With heads full of ideas, they managed to record few songs at Michal Grabowski's recording studio in the end of 2009.

"The songs were released on the split 'The Strange Case of The Missing Corpse' by German label Angel Aids Records. January 2010 the band recorded their first full album entitled 'Political Pollution' at the same recording studio.

"At first it was released D.I.Y. by the band but Let It Bleed Records reissued it eventually on CD. For this entire period Norylsk has been promoting 'Political Pollution' and writing new songs. November 2014 the band has completed writing process for 'Catholic Dictatorship' and is currently in the studio to record the sophomore full length."

Pit Stories: Don't Judge A Book By The Cover

Our quest never ends to find the best mosh pit stories from ever corner of metaldom, from the most brutal wall of death to the most insane stage antics and everything in between.

This week Subversion vocalist Jay Shields shares the following tale warning metal fans not to judge a book by its cover (and not to be an ass to the performing bands):

I was playing an underground all-dayer in my old band Hollow Immunity, and this really drunk guy in the crowd was heckling all the bands. He didn't look like he was even into metal, just some local piss head who'd wondered in off the street.

As the day progressed, the venue filled up and by the time we took to the stage there were quite a few people in the pit area and Mr. Pisshead was right there with them. By now he was pretty steamed and giving out random abuse to those around him.

When we kicked into our first track the crowd went pretty crazy in the pit… into which he got sucked. Soon enough he was on his arse and looking very dazed and confused. I thought “here we go, he'll disappear now and give everyone a break,” but actually he looked like he was enjoying himself. He stayed in the pit for the rest of the set and even came up to us afterwards to say how much he enjoyed the show.

Turns out he didn't look metal, Adidas trackies and all, but he was a Polish metal head and really dug what we were doing. Goes to show, you should never judge a book by its cover, even if he needed a bit of an attitude adjustment.

What's the most outlandish heckling you've ever seen from someone in the audience? Share your story below!

Subverion's upcoming new album "Animi" is due out March 3rd via Rogue Records America, and you can also see a lyric video for the track "Imperfect" here: More...

Byzantine Streaming "A Curious Lot"

Byzantine is prepared to unleash its new album, but getting to this point wasn't without a cost for West Virginia’s progressive thrash titans.

"Since coming back with our self-titled album, I went through a personal split and lost two very important band members,” discloses Byzantine front-man Chris “OJ” Ojeda. “It’s taught me that once in a while, though, you have to lose something to actually gain something.”

Byzantine reaches this resolution with "To Release Is To Resolve," due to be released on April 7th via CEN/RED Distribution. The album's first single "A Curious Lot" can now be heard below, courtesy of a stream hosted by MetalSucks.net.

For album no. 5, Ojeda and longtime drummer Matt Wolfe reunited with Jay Hannon to handle engineering, mixing, and mastering duties. Having replaced longtime members Michael “Skip” Cromer and Tony Rohbrough in 2013, "To Release Is To Resolve" marks bassist Sean Sydnor and guitarist Brian Henderson’s debut album with Byzantine. “As new members, they had big shoes to fill,” explains Ojeda. “Yet the music sounds 100% identifiable as Byzantine, just with two new, powerful ripples to it.”

See the band live on these dates:

03/19 – Little Rock, AR @ Shooters Bar & Grill
03/20 – St. Louis, MO @ Fubar
03/21 – Dayton, OH @ Rockstar Pro Arena

The Dreadlords Cometh

The end-time message of Dreadlords' brooding occult blues has never been more apparent, as the outlaws release their newest piece of visual propaganda from debut LP, "Death Angel," which today sees its premiere through Bloody Disgusting (also available below).

The Southeastern Pennsylvania-based outfit continues to create possibly the darkest blues ever created, infusing black metal and occult rock elements into a monstrous concoction, with a riotous video out now for the "Death Angel" LP's gritty tune, "Dreadlords Cometh."

Directed by James P. Gannon, quick cuts of the band performing its craft have been edited into brutal uprising footage and an ominous storyline, of which the cult collectively offers, "The video is about Dreadlords being released to the population which causes riots throughout the globe due to our occult practices and music. We are being released by a secretive occult group to cause chaos, through/by our music." More...

Fossils Streaming Tracks From "The Meating" EP

Copenhagen-based extreme label Indisciplinarian has announced the release of "The Meating" EP by fellow Danes, Fossils. The label comments:

"On 'The Meating,' the Fossils duo steps far outside of their generally completely instrumental works, capturing the vocal interpretations of seven tracks from their first album, 'Meat Rush,' as performed by various singers at the 'Flesh Hammer' LP release show in March 2014.

"Originally thought as a one-off at the release event, the performers were subsequently brought into the studio to document their contributions to the original tracks. The result is 'The Meating,' a highly seductive abnormality with high energy vocals, noise and poetry contributions for all to enjoy while waiting for the next instrumental Fossils album to arrive in the beginning of 2016."

Two tracks from T"he Meating" -- "Deadringer" featuring Jacob Bredahl (The Kandidate, ex-HateSphere) and "The Ridge And The Rock" featuring Marie Højlund (Marybell Katastrophy) -- are now streaming below. More...

An Evening With Machine Head In Baltimore

Machine Head is the heaviest metal band in the world.

You’re probably already spitting your beer all over your computer screen.

Let me explain. We’ve all heard the complaints of modern production woes, the trendy obsession with blinding speed and out-tech-ing each other, and the resultant dearth of memorable songwriting. Chances are you’ve done quite a bit of this complaining yourself. I know I have.

I know what brutal death metal is; and black metal, and grindcore, and so on. I know how “extreme” metal can get, and I’m a fan of tons of that stuff. I’m a metal journalist. It’s my job to know these things.

There are several reasons, each having to do with the merits of each individual instrument and the man playing it, for Machine Head’s status as Heaviest Metal Band in the World. To go with the most obvious reason, I will tell you right now that no one, and I mean NO ONE, comes close to touching Mr. Robert Flynn in terms of absolute, raw, uncut vocal intensity. Two decades and eight albums deep into Machine Head’s career, he has become a monster.

Guttural death growls, atonal black metal shrieks, I’ve heard it all. I love a great deal of it. But you know what? Little of it shocks or scares me anymore. Precious few bands of the elite-approved, underground, “extreme” variety actually provoke a sense of DANGER in me. Robb Flynn does.

The secret is passion. Unbridled, burning passion, rage, and all-around emotion. Flynn’s voice, at its harshest, is the sound of a man threatening to rip your head off and meaning it. At its softest, it’s the sound of a grieving mourner at a funeral, choking his way through a moving hymn. These two poles, and everything between, are part and parcel of the same experience: pure emotion, and pure intensity.

The guitars and rhythm section follow suit. For all the band’s stylistic evolution and musical expansion over the years, the core ingredient of bone-crushing groove remains unchanged. Whether the band is veering into thrashy or sludgy territory, it doesn’t matter: you can truly BANG YOUR HEAD to this stuff. Machine Head's riffing whips up a kind of aural stigmata, wherein you almost feel the brutal pain of a sledgehammer impacting your body.

All of this translates directly to the live setting. Machine Head are a live band at heart (and many bands of the technical sort are decidedly not). They’ve always sounded that way on record, because their music is MEANT to be experienced in concert. Think of that word’s other meaning: union, harmony. In this case, a bonding between artist and fan. A collective sharing of passion, rage, euphoria, lamentation. EMOTION. More...

The 3rd Attempt Recruits New Drummer

With the band’s debut live appearance coming up at Blastfest in February, it was announced today that Tybalt (Fortid, Ethereal Forest, Den Saakaldte) will be joining The 3rd Attempt on drums.

Tybalt originally came on board as a session drummer for the Blastfest appearance, but after taking part in rehearsals, it was decided that he would join the band on a full-time basis.

Currently mulling over several approaches from record labels, The 3rd Attempt recently debuted a demo track “The Beast Within,” which also features Carpathian Forest’s Daniel Vrangsinn on bass and Anders Kobro on drums. More...

Burweed Announces Debut Album Release

Burweed's debut full-length "Hide" comes out February 20th, 2015 on Inverse Records and was recorded in 2013 at Korkeakoski Studios (Insomnium, Bob Malmström).

The record was mixed by Antti Loponen, the mastermind behind Consciousness Removal Project, and mastered at Audiosiege by Brad Boatright. Inverse Records comments:

"Nearly two years in the making, Burweed's debut album 'Hide' presents the most interesting new act to follow in the Finnish metal scene. After receiving praise for two EP-length releases, the process of making the first Burweed full-length did not turn out to be as easy. Writing the album was a long and difficult task. Confidence in the material and the band were completely buried at the end of the recording sessions.

"The album was finished in early 2014, however, it laid untouched for over six months. The distance gained during this period showed the album in a new light. The difficulties faced, the frustration, and the dedication to the album are heard in an uncompromising, passionate, and an overwhelmingly cathartic whole. 'Hide' had risen from the ashes.

"Burweed was formed in 2009 in the midst of a creative outburst. The trio found their own voice on the praised “Eyes Down South EP” in 2012. What does Burweed sound like? Try combining the groove of Deftones with the gritty riffs of Mastodon and top the mix with some melodies size of a tidal wave." More...
