Stearica Releasing "Fertile" Album

UK-based Monotreme Records confirms the upcoming release of "Fertile," the second LP from Turin, Italy-based instrumental trio Stearica.

The Obelisk today reveals the first listen to "Fertile," hosting a stream of the LP's second track, "Halite." Give it a listen below.

"Fertile" will be released in Europe on April 13th and in North America April 14th, on CD and digital download formats, as well as a deluxe 180-gram 2xLP double gatefold edition. Monotreme Records comments:

"A powerful, adventurous recording, inspired by the squares of the Arab Spring and Barcelona's Indignants, Fertile, will be released in the early days of Spring; the season of renewal and fertility in many parts of the world including the region historically known as The Fertile Crescent, the birthplace of some of the earliest human civilizations, and also the scene of the revolutionary political uprisings that swept across the Middle East in 2011 known as the Arab Spring."

"Upon arriving in Barcelona to perform at Primavera Sound during the 2011 Indignants protests was the spark that ignited the inspiration for this record, and the Arab Spring revolutions unfolding across the Middle East as we wrote the album further fuelled our inspiration," issues the band's Francesco Carlucci. Dragonforce has announced the worldwide release of a debut DVD entitled "In the Line of Fire." The release is scheduled for July 14th and features high definition footage shot during the band's Ultimate Stage headline show at 2014's Loud Park Festival in the Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo.

The track listing below features a selection of new songs from the latest album "Maximum Overload" mixed in with foot stomping anthems and lightning fast shred-fests from previous releases:

Fury of the Storm
Three Hammers
Black Winter Night

Seasons
Symphony of the Night

Ring of Fire
Through the Fire and the Flames
Valley of the Damned

DragonForce is currently on the Maximum Overload World Tour, which commenced in September 2014 and is due to conclude in 2016. Throughout six studio albums and multiple world tours, Dragonforce has steadfastly refused to shoot a DVD, until now.

Guitarist Herman Li explains, "We always held the opinion that if we ever did a DVD we wanted to do it properly. Now, having released six studio albums we thought we had a great cross section of material to pick from and we knew the facilities at Loud Park made it a great place to film a show. Everything just came together and we're very pleased with the results and hope the fans will be also." More...

Annisokay Releases New Video

German metalcore act Annisokay will release "Enigmatic Smile" on April 14th via Long Branch Records/SPV.

In anticipation, the band has teamed up with Revolver Magazine to premiere a new song and video for "Carry Me Away." Check it out below. The band also comments:

"Like every other Annisokay video in the past, we decided to produce this one by ourselves too, so our guitarist and singer Christoph took the part of the director. The story of the video is pretty much connected to the lyrics of the song. Everyone has to part with a loved thing at least one time in life, so everyone has to learn how to let go and look ahead instead of being stuck to the past.

"If someone leaves you or even passes away, you're often scared to forget about him or even 'hurt' him if you start to go on with your life and maybe get to know new people. The long road of letting go is often difficult to pass and is visualized in the video of 'Carry Me Away' by showing the protagonist taking a long and dangerous travel. He is carrying a wooden, locked box with him, which contains all the past things and memories he's cling to. The box needs to be taken to a safe, far and unknown place, before he's finally able to leave it behind.

"We won't tell you now where this place is, but we can already say that the shoot brought the whole team to their physical limits. We shot in places where one wrong step could have been fatally. The hard work was definitely worth it!" More...

Death Alley Signs Record Deal

Amsterdam's heavy, punked-out, proto-metal outlaws Death Alley have signed to NYC's Tee Pee Records.

The ferocious four piece (featuring former The Devil’s Blood guitarist Oeds Beydals and ex-members of Gewapend Beton and Mühr) will let loose the full-length LP, "Black Magick Boogieland," on May 19th.

The sound of Death Alley has been described as "an unorthodox cross contamination of MC5, Captain Beyond, Blue Öyster Cult, Motörhead and Black Sabbath" and "Rock ‘N' Roll played with metal finesse and a pitch black psychedelic soul."

In 2013, Death Alley released the limited 12" split vinyl single, "Peter Pan Speedrock vs. Death Alley," which announced the group's formation with a vengeance. The band's debut 7" -- Over Under b/w Dead Man’s Bones -- dropped last year via Van Records. Death Alley followed the release of the 7" with an appearance at the 2014 Roadburn Festival and month-long European tour with new label mates, The Shrine.

"It’s thrilling to release our first full-length on Tee Pee, to become part of a family of bands whose music inspires us and with people we know well," says Death Alley front man Douwe. "It's about time Tee Pee opens the gates to Black Magick Boogieland."

More information on Death Alley's "Black Magick Boogieland," including new music, will be issued soon.

Reflections Recording New Album

Twin Cities, Minnesota based metal act Reflections will enter The Machine Shop this week with producer Will Putney to begin work on a sophomore release for Good Fight Music / eOne Music. The yet-to-be-titled effort will be released in summer 2015.

“When we heard we had the opportunity to work with Will we were all about it,” says frontman Jake Foster. “We're huge fans of all The Machine Shop's work. For the first time, we've written an album where listening to it all the way through will tell you a story. After an eye opening year of touring while trying to maintain life at home, I feel that we have truly written our best music yet.”

Walt Disney said, "You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you." That sentiment sums of the past eighteen months for the band in more ways than one. In March of last year Foster's home was destroyed in a fire which led to the death of his close friend and roommate. With the news coming at a time where the band was dealing with its own obstacles, it was a devastating blow for everyone. Foster continues, “the last year of my life personally has been a very challenging time for me to say the least. The lyrical content on this album is more focused than anything I've ever written before. I really hope that it will connect with people the way that I'm hoping it will.”

The all new LP will be the follow up to "Exi(s)t," released by the band in 2013. That release debuted on the Billboard charts for the first time in the band’s history, most notably cracking the top 10 on the Heatseekers chart at #6. "The music that we have been working on is much more thought out and organized. We focused more on song structure and finding a balance of style that will separate us from everyone else." More...

"Metalhead" To See VOD Release In April

Boasting a soundtrack of ‘80s/‘90s headbanging classics, Icelandic director Ragnar Bragason’s intense drama "Metalhead" (reviewed here) will be available on demand starting April 3rd.

Distributed by Cinelicious Pics, the VOD release will arrive shortly after a handful of special screenings being held nationwide, including at New York’s Cinema Village (March 20 – 26) and Los Angeles’ Laemmle NoHo 7 (March 27 – April 2) along with Seattle’s SIFF Uptown Theatre (Feb. 27 – March 1) and Portland’s Hollywood Theatre (April 10 - 16). The movie will be shown in eight cities (with more to be announced soon) and a full list of screenings can be found below.

Fueled by a remarkable breakout performance by actress Thora Bjorg Helga, Bragason’s drama of loss, faith, redemption, and heavy metal begins with a farming accident in the 1980’s that sends a young girl named Hera and her parents into a tail-spin of grief over the death of her heavy metal music-obsessed older brother. A decade later, Hera is transformed into a surly headbanger, dressed in black leather and a Slayer t-shirt, clutching her dead brother’s electric guitar as she howls anthems of rage to a barn full of cows. Seemingly trapped in a haunted landscape of slaughterhouses and barren winter fields, making all the wrong choices in her life, Hera slowly and painfully comes to terms with her family’s loss and the sound of her own true voice.

Thrashback Thursday: Destroyer Of Worlds

Welcome to the first edition of a brand new column entitled, Thrashback Thursday! The purpose of this new feature is to find a metal song (and not necessarily thrash, before anyone starts screaming and pointing fingers) that the writer hasn't heard for a while, felt has been overlooked or simply just likes. So let's get things started with British thrash metal legends, Onslaught!

In early 2007, Onslaught, perhaps the favourite name of British thrash metal, finally released their long awaited comeback album, "Killing Peace." It was a big thing for fans as it was their first album in eighteen years, one which proved waiting for thanks to songs like "Burn" and the title track, though the song which stood out to me personally was, "Destroyer of Worlds." I had seen (and indeed, heard) Onslaught for the first time a year before when they were supporting Venom in London and "Destroyer of Worlds" was the only new song they played to the crowd, which went over a treat.

It’s easy to see why. It has a fantastically dark intro and builds up to a sneering and aggressive verse, showcasing the unique vocal style of Sy Keeler perfectly. From there it works its way to an anthem like pre-chourus, before exploding into a rapid fire storm of verbal bullets. A chourus so quick is rarely so catchy and it really does stick with the listener for a long time. It’s an excellent example of a thrash band proving their place in the modern metal world and one which helped make, "Killing Peace" such a triumph of metal. More...

Minsk Posts New Album Trailer

"The Crash & The Draw" is the title of the new full-length from Midwest sound exhibitionists, Minks. Check out a new trailer below.

Set to drop via Relapse Records this Spring, "The Crash & The Draw" follows the enigmatic collective's six-year hiatus and delivers eleven arresting movements of post-metal, sludge and psychedelia.

Recorded almost exclusively in The Prairie State, "The Crash & The Draw" was captured by the band alongside Sanford Parker (Twilight, Voivod, Eyehategod, Yob etc.) at Earth Analog in Tolono. It was mixed by Parker and Minks at Hypercube in Chicago, and mastered by Collin Jordan (Eyehategod, Indian, Wovenhand, Voivod etc.) at The Boiler Room in Chicago with additional vocal tracking by Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City. Old Man Gloom, Floor etc.) at Antisleep Audio in Oakland, California and further tracking, editing, and mixing by Kevin Rendleman at Trash Rocket Audio and Aaron Austin at We Know Who You Are, both in Peoria.

Comments the band of this latest output: "We are so thrilled to be able to finally share this next chapter. Much time has passed. New lines have formed on faces and hands. And new faces have emerged. The spirit arose once again, and the call was answered, with every ounce of will, and care, and attention as was available. There is still much to be discovered. We thank you for your interest, for your attention. There is no currency as valuable."

"The Crash & The Draw" will be released via Relapse Records in North America on April 7th, 2015, April 3rd, 2015 in Germany, Benelux and Finland and April 6th, 2015 in the UK and rest of the world. More...

Wardruna Member Appearing On "Vikings"

Initially released in 2014, "Yggdrasil" is the second release of the "Runaljod" trilogy from Norwegian heathens Wardruna.

The ongoing trilogy, which began with 2009's "Gap Var Ginnunga," is a musical rendition of the twenty-four runes in what is often referred to as the "elder futhark." Some of the oldest of Nordic instruments such as primitive deer-hide frame drums, kraviklyra, tagelharpe, mouth harp, goat horn and lur are implemented, while poetic metres and lyrics are written in Norwegian, Old Norse and Proto-Norse tongue.

Some of the recordings are captured outdoors or under circumstances of significance to each rune while other sources of sound like trees, rocks, water and torches are used. All of these elements are carefully woven into a rich musical landscape and complemented with whispering voices, melodic song and mighty choirs.

"Yggdrasil" was written and recorded by Kvitrafn from Spring 2010 to Winter 2012 at his own Fimbulljóð studio and various outdoor locations and will be made available for the first time in CD-digibook format via Indie Recordings on February 24th, 2014. The Yggdrasil digibook is the only version where you can find complete lyrics with English translations as well text on the runes. More...

Penatagram To Release New Album

Peaceville Records is proud to announce the re-signing of U.S. metal legend, Pentagram, for its forthcoming studio album, set to be released summer 2015. The highly influential American heavy metal/doom act, fronted by the mysterious Bobby Liebling, formed in the early 1970s, though its debut album - now known as "Relentless" - didn't see a release until 1985. Through four decades of adversity and triumph, Pentagram has become a legendary international act and has firmly stamped its name in the heavy metal history books.

Pentagram recently completed pre-production with Swedish producer, Mattias Nilsson, at studios in Baltimore, Md., D.C. and Va., with additional vocal and guitar production in Knoxville, Tenn. with Travis Wyrick. Wyrick is a Grammy Award-winning producer who produced the band's previous album, Last Rites.

The band comments on the signing: "Pentagram is happy to return to the label that helped relaunch interest in our debut album and introduce us to a new metal audience in the 1990s. Peaceville Records has been an ally to us throughout the past 20 years. We are happy to have them by our side once again as we record our fourth album under their banner. Never properly recorded songs written by Bobby in the 70s will be heard on the album as fresh as they were when they were written over 40 years ago. Brand new numbers by the core of Griffin, Turley and Liebling that were written this fall will appear along the old songs, and will produce an album that encompasses the true spirit of Pentagram. Doom is often mistaken as exclusively slow music. If you listen to our classic 'doom' album 'Relentless,' many of those doomed classics are quite fast. One of the magics of doom metal is to have a faster song seem much slower because of the sheer heaviness of the number. That's what we are going for. The band will sound like they are as much from the street as they are from the Sabbath, because, well, we are." More...

The Answer Premieres New Lyric Video

The song appears on the new album "Raise a Little Hell," which is set for release via Napalm Records on the following release schedule:

March 6th: G/A/S/Europe/AUS

March 11th: SE/ESP
March 17th: USA/CAN

The band commented on "Long Live the Renegades": "The song is a bit of a rocker and we tried a slightly different production technique on this track by keeping it very dry. The song is about just doing what you do best and having a bit of a bunker mentality. This is our fifth album and we've gone back to our earlier blues and roots style with what we think are harder rockin' grooves. Hope you like it as much as we do!" More...

The Vintage Caravan Announces New Album "Arrival"

Icelandic classic rock trio The Vintage Caravan announced the first details of the upcoming sophomore album, entitled "Arrival." The album is set for release this May via Nuclear Blast. Renowned American Artist David Paul Seymour created the psychedelic artwork (shown below).

The band commented on the new release: "We are so excited for the release of the upcoming album. It's definitely a step forward for us musically and we are incredibly happy with how natural the recording process was and how well all of the songs turned out. Get ready for Arrival!"

The band recorded the follow-up to 2014's critically acclaimed "Voyage" on an isolated fjord where they set up a studio in an old ballroom. The band once again worked with producer Axel "Flexi" Árnason who also produced their last album.

Commented the band: "The songwriting sessions have been going on since around October 2012 when our album Voyage had been out in Iceland for a month. We immediately started writing at that point so some of the songs are quite old for us. Because of that we have a bit too many songs but we intend to make this album around 10 tracks so we can put what we think are the best tracks on the album.

"Right now we are doing demos, polishing the stuff and thinking of ways to nicely add to the production of the songs.

"We are very excited to start recording this album. It's going to be interesting to work on. The album is a bit different from our previous album - it's a bit darker, a bit heavier, a bit more melodic but definitely all in a good way."

More information is expected shortly. More...
