Taken By The Sun Lights The "Fuse"
With the release of a self-titled full-length now less than a week away, today the warlords at Cvlt Nation offer up a taste of "Fuse" from Chicago progressive post-metal doom enthusiasts, Taken By The Sun. Give it a listen below.
Tracked almost entirely live at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio Studio, engineered by Sanford Parker (Twilight, Voivod, Eyehategod, Yob etc.) and mastered by Collin Jordan (Eyehategod, Indian, Wovenhand, Voivod etc.) at The Boiler Room, all in Chicago, "Taken By The Sun" is an eight-track, forty-two minute audio expedition that recalls the confounding atmospheres of veteran sound contortionists Neurosis, Isis, Pelican, Rosetta, Mouth Of the Architect, Red Sparowes, and The Ocean.
Comments the band of this newly released song: "In contrast to our prior pre-release track ['Ornaflux'] which showcased our capability for frenetic, atonal prog showmanship, 'Fuse' is a sprawling display of drama and melody. At once crushing and serene, the song shifts from soundscape to soundscape while held together by a few key themes and tones."
The previous song "Ornaflux" can be hear over at this location, and you can see the band live:

Atten Ash Streaming Full Album
The official worldwide release of Atten Ash's "The Hourglass" album is upon us, with the album coming in digital format as well as a physical digipack CD with 12 page booklet. Give it a listen below, or order your own copy at this location. Hypnotic Dirge Records also comments:
"A three-piece atmospheric/melodic death-doom band from North Carolina, Atten Ash is the creation of founding member James Greene, who wrote the foundations of the songs which would later become 'The Hourglass.'
"In 2011, James began collaborating with Barre Gambling (founding guitarist of Daylight Dies) and Archie Hunt (vocalist/guitarist of Legion of the Fallen) and the trio continued the musical work arranging songs, establishing vocal patterns, writing lyrics and guitar solos.
"Recorded in 2012, an intricate and encapsulating death-doom portrait permeates Atten Ash’s first full-length recording. Rich in atmosphere, swaying through infectious melodies and razorsharp solos while displaying both melancholy and aggression with conviction and force, 'The Hourglass' is the result of a band with considerable maturity and experience, already at the top of their craft, and with a defined vision for their sound placing them among the classic death-doom giants of the genre.
"Those pining for genuine melodic/atmospheric death-doom for the dark and cold days ahead, and especially fans and listeners of bands such as Daylight Dies, Slumber, Katatonia, Woccon, Doom:vs, October Tide, and Helevorn (among others) would be wise to heed attention."
The track listing is:
1. City in the Sea
2. See You...Never
3. Not as Others Were
4. Song for the Dead
5. Born
6. First Day
7. Waves of Siloam
8. The Hourglass More...

Thrashback Thursday: Beber Até Morrer
Whilst Brazil is known primarily in the metal world for Sepultura, they have produced a number of other excellent bands such as Sarcofago, Krisiun, and of course, the legendary Ratos de Porão. The band made their name in the early eighties punk scene but were never shy about showing off their heavy metal influences and making friends with metal bands, particularly the aforementioned Sepultura, whose drummer, Igor Cavalera, helped the band sign with Roadrunner Records towards the end of the decade.
Their first album through the label was, "Brasil," widely regarded by both fans and critics to be one of their best works, thanks to strong tracks such as, "Sofrer," "Amazônia Nunca Mais" and of course, the drinking anthem, "Beber Até Morrer," which roughly translates to, "drink 'til you die." The song, as is typical of the band, is a relatively short, but furiously fun blast of energy, performed at a very quick tempo, with enough room for melody and a sing along chourus which Ratos de Porão were one of the best at writing. It's one of their more jaunty tunes, not steeped in the critiques of capitalism and the mistreatment of Brazil's poor, proving that even those seen as the little people by those on high, no matter how literally huge, can enjoy themselves as much as anyone. Behemoth Posts Excerpt From New Book
Next week, Metal Blade Records will unleash "Behemoth: Devil's Conquistadors," a definitive biography penned by Lukasz Dunaj.
The 490-page, hardcover tome takes an in-depth look at the history of the events that materially influenced the band, its music, and rise to ultimate rise to the upper echelon of metal. In addition to the author's narrative, the book includes quotes and anecdotes from current and former Behemoth members as well as interviews with Tomas Krajewski, Rob Darken, Graal, Havok, old photos of the band, flyers, lyric sheets and more.
In the foreword by Krzysztof Azarewicz (Polish poet, writer, occultist and longtime lyric co-writer): "If, as a cultural anthropologist, I were to point to a single cosmic force which Behemoth's music expresses, I would name it not Satan but Dionysus. A deity that represents not only the intoxicating influence of cosmic energies and earthly benefits, but also their benevolent healing properties. A deity of strength and pride. A deity of creative might."
In advance of its release, today Revolver Magazine offers up an exclusive excerpt from the book where vocalist/guitarist Nergal recounts his early grade and high school years, his increasing interest in extreme music, and his growing skepticism of Catholicism: More...

This album sees Obscura move a step further."

At first I composed some songs in order to support my 2 drum DVDs, but thanks to the support and demand from all the fans out there it turned into a full album over time.
"I can honestly say, the only reason I have recorded this album is the fans asked for this to happen. I am happy that I did it and more excited than ever for the future of this project! I enjoyed recording it more than anything. I have got some great plans for my project. I want to get out there and play this album live as soon as possible too! The Agonist Streaming Full Album
Montreal's The Agonist is set to release "The Eye Of Providence" on Tuesday February 24th in North America.
The band has joined forces with Revolver Magazine to bring you a stream of the entire album, which can also be heard below.
"The Eye Of Providence," or God's all-seeing eye, is a piece of religious iconography with origins stemming back to ancient Egypt. But The Agonist isn't going all History Channel on this new album (the lack of ghosts and aliens should have tipped you off). The lyrical center isn't about pyramids, the Freemasons, or its appearance on the United States one-dollar bill.
As on previous albums, The Agonist is commenting heavily on advances in monitoring technology, particularly as it relates to governments intruding on the private lives of its citizens.
"We are embracing a number of new topics," admits guitarist Danny Marino with a cryptic smile. "The Agonist still wants to be a voice for change. However, there are many socio-political and personal topics that we haven't yet covered. We get into some of those on this record." More...
Leprous Announces New Album, Tour
Norwegian progressive act Leprous has wrapped up work on a newest studio album, which follows 2013's acclaimed "Coal" release (see review here). The album will be titled "The Congregation" and is to be released on May 25th, 2015 in Europe and June 2nd, 2015 in North America via InsideOutMusic.
Vocalist and keyboard player Einar Solberg has checked in on the album: "This has without doubt been the most challenging album to write so far, if you count the amount of hours, blood, sweat and tears behind it. Which makes me extra proud to just have delivered the master of what I consider to be the most daring, technical, fresh and mature album we've ever done. The music of The Congregation is mostly written by me on my computer, so that this time around I could use my ears instead of my knowledge as the main writing tool. If you use your knowledge and your usual methods to write every album, you will eventually find yourself stuck in a quagmire of old habits. Lyrically The Congregation covers the dangers and consequences of blindly following the flow, thus the album title will speak for itself."
The band recorded the drums, guitars and bass for the album in Sweden's Fascination Street/Ghostward Studios with David Castillo (Katatonia, Opeth) and the vocals together with Heidi Solberg Tveitan & Vegard Tveitan at Mnemosyne Studios in Norway. Just like the preceding albums "Bilateral" and "Coal," "The Congregation" was mixed by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Symphony X, Kreator). More...

worldwide deal with WormHoleDeath records for the release of our most ambitious project to date, our sophomore album ROT! The WormholeDeath crew have really taken us under their wings, giving our album all the attention and recognition it deserves. It's an honor to join forces with WormHoleDeath, and we feel we have found good partners who are as passionate about ROT as we are! We put our hearts and souls into the writing and recording of this album over the course of last year. The album is bigger, heavier, and more ferocious than we ever could imagine at the start of the writing process. It is our best work by far, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone. Bruce Dickinson Undergoes Cancer Treatment
Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson is currently undergoing cancer treatment for a small cancerous growth at the back of his tongue. Due to the early detection, doctors have listed his prognosis as "very good," and the band will have further updates in May.
The band's announcement reads: "Just before Christmas, Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson visited his doctor for a routine check-up. This led to tests and biopsies which revealed a small cancerous tumour at the back of his tongue. A seven week course of chemotherapy and radiology treatment was completed yesterday. As the tumour was caught in the early stages, the prognosis thankfully is extremely good. Bruce’s medical team fully expect him to make a complete recovery with the all clear envisaged by late May. It will then take a further few months for Bruce to get back to full fitness. In the meantime we would ask for your patience, understanding and respect for Bruce and his family’s privacy until we update everyone by the end of May.
