Pit Stories: Brian Fair Gets A Broken Nose

Each week we check in with metal musicians to get their most memorable Pit Stories from live shows. Today vocalist Sal LoCoco of New York outfit Sworn Enemy shares this tale of Brian Fair getting his nose broken while out on tour with Death Ray Vision:

So Sworn Enemy set out on a mini tour with Death Ray Vision and Acaro last summer, and we haven't seen Mike D (Killswitch Engage) and Brian Fair (Shadows Fall) in a long time. It was really good to catch up with both of those guys. Also wound up getting very close with the Acaro guys on that tour.

Well to make a long story short the tour is winding down and the last day we are up at Bogies in Albany, our set is going great and we get to our closing song "We Hate." Now at this time Brian has been dancing for us throughout the whole set like a madman. We pretty much get to the last 10 seconds of the song, now mind you none of us in the band seen it happen as we were onstage with the lights blaring in our eyes, we find out that Brian got knocked in the face and busted his nose and had to go to the hospital. Death Ray Vision did not get to play their set. What a way to end the tour. It was crazy that he had that happen to him in the last few seconds of our set.

Death Ray Vision commented on the event back in September of 2013 via Facebook: "Thanks to Sworn Enemy and Acaro for a hell of a good time for the Raging Semi Tour! Thanks to everyone who came out and partied with us! Albany, sorry for not being able to play due to Brian getting his nose broken in the Pit during Sworn Enemy..we'll make it up to you!"

Sworn Enemy's new album "Living On Borrowed Time" is due out Tuesday May 13th, 2014 and you can hear new music from the band over at Facebook here. More...

Mire Releases New Album

Two years in the making, Montreal, QC's Mire is proud to announce the official release of new album "Inward/Outward" today.

The album is based on the band's personal experiences ranging from the study of cognitive science to a military stint in Afghanistan and can be heard below or purchased digitally on a name-your-price basis at Bandcamp here. Vocalist JP LaChapelle comments on the release:

"Interpreted through our fingers, tongued and toe tips, this album which we've been working on for 2 years at totally different points in our lives, demonstrates the fan of emotions of 5 individuals' experience.

"The craft is the loom into which our soil-tending, sun-vising and pest-warding efforts bear fruit. Love for the fate of man and the anger to defend it. Overwhelmed with a sense of innate creativity, we all curb our nature to the structures put in place for our short lives; whether building an enterprise, community or institution of any kind. MIRE's decided to make music. Filtered as pure as possible, our passion rendered this product. Our maiden album expresses the plight of an impeached animal nature, faced with the philosophy of man's fate run through questionable funnels.

"Throughout our creative process, we've experienced different stages and shed skins. The 5 colors we shine combine through the prism of 'Inward Outward' to produce the first of MIRE's own hues. Being able to walk one's own path is its own reward and we five musicians feel incredibly fortunate to have seized the chance to create this album. That's what we celebrate every time we hear it." Plague Vendor To Release Debut Album

Epitaph is proud to announce that Plague Vendor will release debut album "Free To Eat" on April 15th.

Check out the new video for "Black Sap Scriptures" in the player below, courtesy of Noisey.Vice.com. The following press release was also issued about the band:

"Plague Vendor's gritty brand of rock was birthed by four friends with a predilection for dark tones and instinctual playing in their hometown of Whittier, California. The name was inspired by a Mexican folk tale that members Brandon Blaine (vocals), Michael Perez (bass) Luke Perine (drums), Jay Rogers (guitar) had read, with the first written songs recalling narrative elements of the story. Early shows were raucous and treacherous, making it clear that Plague Vendor was peddling something formidable.

"With a number of house parties, club gigs, and warehouse shows under their belts, Plague Vendor quickly became synonymous with wild nights, bad decisions, and good times. Fearless front man Brandon Blaine channels the kinetic energy of a brooding, young Nick Cave on stage, with bassist Michael Perez, guitarist Jay Rogers, and drummer Michael Perez providing the pummeling instrumentation.

"Now fully fleshed out and poised to release their inaugural album, Free to Eat, on Epitaph, Plague Vendor embrace multiple sensibilities at once, veering rapidly from aggressive thrash to melodic introspection, compressing the range of human experience into ten rapid-fire, in-your-face songs. Everything was recorded live in the studio, using only two or three takes with no overdubs. A shadowy, dark vibe flows throughout the tracks, and for Blaine, the words are important. The songs say something worthwhile, revealing subconscious interpretations of the musicians’ experiences and ideas." More...

Klogr Announces New Album

Italian metal band Klogr will release upcoming full-length "Black Snow" on April 29th, 2014 via Zeta Factory on physical format and via Believe as a digital release.

Recorded between Zeta Factory and Green River studios, the album was produced by Klogr front man and mastermind Rusty and Tancredi Barbuscia. "Black Snow" will be released in a special digital edition including the band’s 2011’s "Till You Turn" EP and "Ground Zero 11-11-11 Live." Check out an album trailer below.

The lyrics on Black Snow are about a broken world where a prompt reaction is mandatory and there's no room for hesitation, faking or excuses. This concept comes as no surprise, as Klogr actively supports the international organization Sea Shepherd in defense and protection of marine wild-life along with artists like Aerosmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Gojira, to name a few.

Frontman Rusty states, “Man has contaminated everything and his contamination was not always a positive thing. What was meant to be evolution is revealing itself to be an environmental and intellectual pollution heading toward self-destruction.”

Triptykon and Century Media Records/Prowling Death Records are proud to announce a special limited edition box set of the band's second album, containing the album's main Mediabook CD edition as well as a selection of unique Triptykon paraphernalia. The "Melana Chasmata" Mediabook features a 32-page booklet and an additional 12-panel fold-out cross-booklet; the paraphernalia comprises a silver Triptykon-"T" necklace, 2 specially manufactured Triptykon candles, a Triptykon tote bag, a poster, and 3 postcards. The box set will be limited to 2000 copies worldwide.

Tom Gabriel Warrior comments: "Some time ago, I voiced my personal disapproval regarding the original concept for the planned Triptykon Melana Chasmata box set as scheduled for release by our licensing partner, Century Media Records.

"It is to Century Media Records' credit that they listened and subsequently approached me to address my misgivings and create a box set that represents the group's ideas and intentions far more comprehensively. I am grateful for such an open and creative collaboration, and I deeply respect Century Media Records for sparing neither effort nor expenditure to please Triptykon and the band's audience.

Flotsam And Jetsam Announces Lineup Changes

Following a recent European tour, Flotsam And Jetsam has checked in with the following announcement about lineup changes:

"We would like to send out a huge thank you to the many fans and press that came out to support us on our tour with Sepultura. This tour was the largest European tour to date for Flotsam and Jetsam.

"Our main goal is to get connected to all of you, shake your hands, look you in the eyes and let you know how much we appreciate you. You are the life blood of music.

"As you know we released a complete reproduction of No Place for Disgrace this year. This was so we could present the album the way it was intended to heard. Many of you had great comments about this and that confirmed our decision to get this done.

"After completion of the 2013 tour with Testament in the US, Edward Carlson was no longer able to tour due to physical issues that would require back and neck surgery to possibly correct. We will miss our comrade and wish him well on his next adventure. Steve Conley has been officially recruited to fill the spot. Having played with David Ellifson (Megadeth) in F5, we are confident in his ability to hold the spot with integrity. More...

Space Probe Taurus Inks Deal With Ripple Music

Space Probe Taurus has inked a deal with Ripple Music to release "Mondo Satan" later this year. The label comments:

"Ripple Music is proud to announce the signing of acclaimed, hard-hitting acid biker heavy rockers, Space Probe Taurus to their ever-expanding roster! Space Probe Taurus has been around in one form or another since 1992, but it wasn't until a name change and shortening of the songs in 1997 that the band settled down into doing what they still do today: preaching the gospel of dirty garage rock Swedish style. Their music has been called 'biker movie acid fuzz' and that sums it up as well as anything we could say!

"Since the release of the Blue Cheer tribute album Blue Explosion by Black Widow Records, the band has been part of many compilations. And the year after saw the release of their first own record, the Insect City EP on Game Two/Slowdive Records. The band has also been involved deeply in the American low budget movie scene, first providing a song for the 'I Am Vengeance' soundtrack (released by Meteor City Records in 2001), then having 12 songs in the movie Actress Apocalypse. Upcoming in 2014 is the movie Franklin which will include yet another song (a demo version of the song 'Mondo Satan'). More...

Cobalt Splits With Phil McSorley

Phil McSorley has issued the following announcement about parting ways with U.S. outfit Cobalt:

"I have decided to quit Cobalt. I am grateful for what Cobalt started from, and the impressive amount of people affected by its music. I still feel a connection with the work we did, but I no longer feel that I am a part of its vision.

"Cobalt started with Erik and I making angry and heartfelt music, that later moved into more expressive music. It held a ton of symbology to my life, and for its help in making me who I am I am grateful.

"I will continue to make music on my own terms, but for me Cobalt is best left where it is. Thanks to all for the years of friendship and support. If Erik continues to create under the name Cobalt I support his decision. He was always a genius anyway."

Cradle Of Filth Guitarist Issues Surgery Update

Last week Cradle Of Filth announced that guitarist James McIlroy would be undergoing surgery, but now Dani Filth has issued the following update about the procedure being cancelled:

"Greetings Filthlings! Remember last week that I told you all about guitarist James Mcllroy's career-changing neck surgery? Well, it seems there was one massive fucking complication. I'll leave it to James himself to explain, by way of an email he sent me yesterday evening... (Please see below).

"I hope you join (with the rest of the band and I) in wishing him all the very best in overcoming this horrible situation he finds himself embroiled in."

James comments:

"Hi Dani, right now I should have been coming to from surgery that would have fixed the pain in my back and arm that has plagues me for years. However, things did not go according to plan this morning and I am left sitting here, back at square one this evening.

"Last night I went into hospital, got admitted, got given a bed and had a few tests done, and one last MRI scan. Everything was set, and this morning, after having not slept all night (hospitals aren't exactly fun to sleep in) I was going through the operation prep this morning, had my ECG, had psyched myself up and was all ready to go with 30 minutes to an hour until they were going to take me in when suddenly i found out that the disc replacement surgery to them meant inserting a small cage in place of the damaged disc and then letting the bones fuse together. Now neck fusion is not what I had believed was going to happen for the past 9 months since the diagnosis, and from everything I have read about it reduces neck mobility and ends up with the other discs getting worn resulting in needing more fusions.
