This was show number three for the North American tour, and I reckoned I was in for the prime specimen tonight: bands with a pair of performances under their belts, loosening up and easing into a confident routine, yet with vast reserves of energy yet to be unleashed.
Not long after arriving at Springfield, Virginia's Empire (formerly Jaxx), I was propped on a tall stool in the Alchemy Room, a cozy bar just beyond the box office and separated from the venue proper by a pair of corridors and two sets of doors. Setting a half-full scotch rocks on the modest circular table, I glanced left at an unmistakable figure headed my way from the gloom of the concert hall.
I shook his hand. "Mike," I introduced myself. The rail-thin, grizzled figure chuckled, graying lion's-mane curls bobbing slightly. "Easy to remember," came the thick German-accented English, and I realized I was speaking with metal's incarnation of Scar ("The Lion King"), had actor Jeremy Irons used his humorous faux-German from his "Die Hard With A Vengeance" role.
Mike Sifringer, co-founder of Destruction and only permanent member to date, took a seat. The Alchemy Room was nearly empty, sound checks were still in muffled progress beyond the doors, and we immediately dove into a relaxed Q&A session. Destruction had recently booked Hell & Heaven Corona Metal Fest, and our transcript picks up with the event's last-minute cancellation. More...
Dead By April's Zandro Santiago has checked in with the following announcement about canceling tonight's show:
"Dear London fans. I am truly sorry for having to cancel today's show. The last couple of days I've been feeling really sore in my throat, and when I woke up this morning my throat was even worse and I also had a fever.
"I waited until sound check to see if I was able to sing, but my voice was gone. I couldn't sing at all. There was no other option than to cancel the show.
"I am so sorry for this and I understand that there are people out there who's disappointed and upset. I really hope to be able to make it up to you one day!" More...
Human Furnace, a.ka. James Bulloch, says he's been using this moniker since ninth grade. It was a thing he used to sign his pictures with, like a Pushead signature. He used that nickname even before he even got into the band. These sketched images proved a precursor to his verbal art in Ringworm. When thinking of the band's latest opus "Hammer of the Witch," images bubble to the surface like an eyeball in a witch's cauldron.
"Hammer of the Witch" was just one of the topics we discussed with the front man after his performance at the Metal Sucks Showcase at SXSW. The album is the first to include the words "Relapse Records" on the back cover. This may be the band's first on Relapse, but they have a history dating back 25 years. Human Furnace feels much of their time wasn't promoted properly before signing to Relapse.
Distractions were minimal in the alley behind Dirty Dog Bar. Cops wondered shone their flash lights on us to see if we were packing heat or smoking pot. Austin had raised their level of security after the tragic events from the prior day . For this reason and the multitudes of drunk SXSW attendees passing by, it was not the ideal setting for an interview, but that didn't stop Human Furnace from fully speaking his mind as we discussed the above-mentioned topics. Swedish instrumental rock collective My Brother The Wind has just put the final touches on the expansive new LP, "Once There Was A Time When Space And Time Were One," which is set for release this Summer.
"Once There Was A Time When Space And Time Were One" was recorded during a cold Saturday in January 2013. The album will come via American label Free Electric Sound, a subdivision of The Laser's Edge Group. While The Laser's Edge primarily focuses on progressive rock, and its offshoot, Sensory Records, is geared towards the collective's progressive metal releases, Free Electric Sound is the label's portal into instrumental territory.
With the outfit's four members hailing from Stockholm, Åmål, and Gothenburg, My Brother The Wind is a fully improvisational cosmic rock collective consisting of members of Swedish acts Makajodama, Magnolia, The Greencoats, and Anekdoten. More...

San Antonio blackened death legion HOD is pleased to announce an official union with newly revamped Arctic Music for the release of new full-length, "Book Of The Worm," this Summer. Comments the band of the chaos set to ensue:
"The album is long overdue, but finding the right label to work with takes time. Label head, Julian Hollowell, made us a great offer, and knowing Julian for years, due to his membership in Kult ov Azazel, we knew this was the right choice for us. The wait is worth it."
In related HOD intel, the band will embark upon another short run of live abrasions next week alongside New Orleans black/death dealers, Abysmal Lord. The slaughter will begin April 2nd in Memphis sullying a total of seven metropolises. After the passing of Dave Brockie, AKA Oderus Urungus, earlier this week, Gwar's manager Jack Flanagan has now checked in with the following update regarding the cause of death and the upcoming GWAR-B-Q event:
"On behalf of Dave Brockie's family, Slave Pit Inc. and GWAR, we would like to thank all the loyal fans worldwide for the outpouring of love and support shown to us over the past few days.
"Knowing that we have such amazing family, friends and fans is truly helping us all get through this tough time.
"We are awaiting a toxicology report from the medical examiners office to confirm the cause of death. The medical examiners office has informed us that the results can take one to three months to be processed. Standard protocol exists that a toxicology procedure be performed.
"We have made funeral arrangements and a private memorial has been scheduled for close friends and family.
"As Dave and Oderus would have wanted, this year's GWAR-B-Q scheduled for August 16th at Hadad's Lake (7900 Osborne Turnpike Richmond, VA) will still take place as planned. We have scheduled the Dave Brockie public memorial to take place the day prior to the GWAR-B-Q, Friday August 15th, also at Hadad's Lake."
At this point it is unknown if Gwar will be disbanding or if a new member will be sought to step in.

"Do you remember when you first heard of Judas Priest or Accept? Do you remember the first time your speakers exploded with Iron Maiden?
"Five bastards have not forgotten those times and decided to sell their soul to the devil and wrap up classic, powerful, razor sharp and wild heavy metal!
"Welcome to the second assault of the Spanish metal band Wild. 'En Tierra Hostil' was roduced by Ángel 'Choco' Muñoz, recorded, mixed and mastered in studios Traste Cero in Madrid.
"Nine songs straight to you ears blowing your brains off, like you won't stop shredding your air guitar like a maniac! 38 minutes of pure undiluted heavy metal. The classic rockers and new blood together in this hell called 'En Tierra Hostil.' Now bang your head for god’s sake!" More...
The Swiss folk metal outfit Eluveitie has checked in with the following announcement about recording a new album:
"Right after taking home a Swiss Music Award earlier this month (the first metal band ever to do so!), we have entered the Swiss New Sound Studio again to begin work on the follow-up to 2012’s 'Helvetios,' once again with legendary producer Tommy Vetterli.
"As always, working with Tommy is as efficient as it is creative: both drum and guitar tracking is already completed! We have now begun work on the folk instruments and vocals at Newsound Studio, Lucerne’s Soundfarm Studio, and Chrigel’s home simultaneously. We are extremely proud of the new material and can’t wait to present yet another big step in the evolution of Eluveitie later this year!

Goatwhore's new album, "Constricting Rage of the Merciless," is scheduled for release in North America on July 8th.
Fans that see Goatwhore live on the road as part of the Metal Alliance Tour will have the opportunity to reserve a copy of the CD at the band's merch booth. Those pre-orders will include a special limited edition/exclusive album laminate and and exclusive t-shirt. The laminates will include unique pre-order codes to enter o-line to have the album shipped right to the buyer's door upon release.
"Constricting Rage of the Merciless" was recorded with producer Erik Rutan at Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, FL. This is Goatwhore's fourth studio outing with Rutan at the helm, and to achieve an even more dark and powerful tone on this album, all drums, bass, and rhythm guitars were tracked to 2-inch tape. New music from the album will be made available in the coming weeks.
Erik Rutan commented on the recording sessions: "Working with Goatwhore again for our 4th album together was amazing! It is through our experience and established trust and bond in the studio that allowed us to push each other to the limits, only to achieve the best performances and tones we could. This album came out so dynamic and huge, partly due to the fact that we recorded drums, bass, and main rhythm guitars to analog tape. Goatwhore has a massive sound and we all felt recording to analog would be the best way to capture it, giving it a very unique quality and feel, built off of integrity and vibe. This is our finest moment working together and the guys did an incredible job creating and performing all the songs on this record. Goatwhore fans be prepared!"
The track listing is as follows:
1. Poisonous Existence In Reawakening
2. Unraveling Paradise
3. Baring Teeth For Revolt
4. Reanimated Sacrifice

Vocalist and visual artist Karyn Crisis today reveals further details of her newest musical project, Gospel of the Witches.
Gospel of the Witches features Karyn Crisis' vocals and mystical lyrics, over music composed by Ephel Duath mastermind Davide Tiso. With Tiso playing all guitars and bass, the lineup is completed by Danny Walker of Intronaut on drums, and Ross Dolan of Immolation on vocals. In addition to the core lineup, the album will contain a guest appearance by Mike Hill, frontman of Tombs.
A 13-song album is currently in the pre-production stages. Tracking begins in June with producer Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me) at The Basement Recording NC.
Karyn Crisis speaks about Gospel of the Witches: "The album is a bold statement and an epic, unabashedly emotional work of devotion to the ultimate expression of the power of the fires of transformation: The Witch. Davide has a haunting ability to generate undeniably emotional landscapes with his guitar, and these songs twist and turn into darkness and then transmute into heartbreaking beauty and light. As a testament to Ancient Ways and the union of opposites, I explore the feminine power in my voice on this album and couple it with Ross' intensely masculine vocal power to create a consistent theme of thickly layered vocal choruses. Danny will round out these 13 dark mantras with thunderous drums. Take the tendrils of my unstoppable voice into the Great Mysteries... or run for the hills."
A Kickstarter page has been set up to raise money for the recording, mixing, mastering, and manufacturing costs. Check it out and see all the available rewards for contributing at this location.

The sonic fury was captured at Magpie Cage by J. Robbins of Jawbox, who, although best known for recording punk and post-hardcore acts, perfectly understood the band's creative vision.
"He's got a really good style of making records and I knew he would understand that we wanted to make this sound live and organic as opposed to tight and compressed," relays bassist/vocalist Paul Delaney, citing Kiss' Destroyer and Metallica's Master Of Puppets as inspiration. "I wanted it to be a little more rock 'n' roll sounding because I felt the songs were a little bigger and structured. It tells a story from beginning to end and the recording reflects that."
As such, the behemoth offering includes a bonus track: A Black Anviled cover of "Under The Rose" from Kiss' iconic ninth studio recording, "The Elder." More...

Power Theory has officially parted ways with guitarist Nygil Hoch and the band issued the following statement about the situation:
"Our producer and friend Matt DiFabio (Single Bullet Theory/Pissing Razors) will be handling lead guitar duties for our show in Chicago next weekend.
"We will not embellish on the reasons behind the decision to let Nygil go, and we ask our friends and fans not to indulge in the mudslinging that has been initiated on Facebook by him since his termination. Actions speak louder than words do, and class and maturity usually speak much louder than lies. This was not a decision we wanted to make, but circumstances left no other choice.
"We will be setting up auditions for his replacement upon our return from Chicago, and we will still meet our deadline for the release of 'Driven By Fear' by the end of the summer. It will be worth the wait."

The confusing evolution of the band formerly known as Stuka Squadron started in September of 2012, when founding member Lord Graham Pyre (bassist) split with the band. Carrying on without him, the band named a new bass player, before a name dispute ensued, causing the remaining members to change the name to Iron Knights. Since the change in name, vocalist James Duke Fang Begley split with the band along with Stuka guitarist Gravedigger Cox.
Now, its appears a reunion might be on the horizon as Lord Graham Pyre and James Duke Fang Begley have been working on new material and a snippet of a song entitled "Pit of Fire" has surfaced. Earlier this month, the band posted the following on the Official Facebook Page:
"Squadroneers and adherents of the Subterranean Reich. Following the conclusion of THE BLOOD WAR which has disrupted our campaign for the last two years, Oberkommando has authorised the announcement of a NEW WUNDERWAFFE (MIRACLE WEAPON in your inferior English tongue). This is the first step in OUR NEW CAMPAIGN. The STUKA SQUADRON RETURNS! Who wishes to sample the new MASTER WORK?"
This post followed along with the song snippet:
