46 news articles posted on this day.

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 9

This week certainly could've gone better for metal. Most of us woke Monday morning to the startling news that Dave Brockie, aka Oderus Urungus - visiting alien, hilarious aficionado of all things offensive, and lead singer of costumed shock metallers GWAR - had died in his sleep of unknown causes Sunday, March 23rd.

Naturally, co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) felt it only right to devote a nice, twitching, juicy slab of this week's podcast to Dave/Oderus. [00:50:45] His sudden death will likely have a massive, throbbing, aching impact on the future of metal culture, an impact as understated and yet as ever-present as his three-decade influence while alive and killing.

It's not all bummer news, though. We have some live concert adventures to share as well. Kevin caught performances by two renowned progressive metal bands: The Ocean [00:08:58] and Between The Buried And Me. [00:37:15] Mike saw thrashers Destruction [00:00:44] and experienced a unique, unexpected, trend-bucking grassroots event dubbed Annihilation Fest, held in Lynchburg, Virginia. [00:27:01]

We'd like to thank Metal Blade Records for their permission to use GWAR's "Zombies, March!" to open up this special episode, which you can check out here.

Epistasis Streaming New EP

In less than a week, Crucial Blast will release the label's first recordings from NYC metal experimentalists Epistasis with the "Light Through Dead Glass" mini-album, and today Noisey.Vice.com lets the whole thing loose early. Give the full EP a listen below. The following press release was also issued:

"Set for release on April 1st, the collective's latest sonic explorations are documented through six new movements on the new EP, Epistasis' own specialized, unclassifiable mangling of influences swirling into a chaotic, devastating and yet beautiful entity.

"The haunting and crushing range of vocals pouring forth from Amy Mills' (Couch Slut) matched with her mournful trumpet contributions somehow weaves seamlessly into the barrage of percussion unloaded by drummer Alex Cohen (Pyrrhon, Malignancy) while guitarist Kevin Wunderlich (Couch Slut, Voice Coils) and bassist Doug Berns lay down an equally vast culmination of amplification and riff tactics. Mills recently also played trumpet on new albums from Castevet and Psalm Zero. The EP was recorded under the watch of Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans, Unsane).

"Epistasis will showcase their latest works at a hometown gala, just days after the official release of Light Through Dead Glass. On Sunday, April 6th, Kayo Dot, White Suns, and Pyrrhon will share the stage at the Acheron in Brooklyn with EPISTASIS at the band's official release show for the record."

Emery Announces New Album

Veteran Christian rock band, Emery, will launch a crowdfunding campaign next week to help support the band's upcoming full-length, "You Were Never Alone," which will be released this summer on BadChristian Music.

"You Were Never Alone" sees the return of Emery founding member/vocalist, Devin Shelton, and the band plans to tour in support of its upcoming sixth full-length effort.

Emery has also posted a rough mix of a song from the new album, "I Got Taken for a Bath," for free download at this location.

Commented the band: "It's been almost 11 years since we released 'The Weak's End.' That's a little hard to believe for us! In that time, we have seen more success than we could have possibly dreamed. We toured the world, created five more albums, and had the privilege of meeting and getting to know a ton of you along the way. You have never left us. As we came up with what we wanted to say here, it almost brought us to tears. We really were never alone. You are Emery. And you are the reason that we are still here, and why our new record is going to be our most important."

BadChristian Music was formed in 2013 by Emery's Matt Carter and Toby Morrell along with close friend Joey Svendsen.

Etched In Stone Announces New Album

Four years have passed since central California's death metal unit Etched In Stone unleashed debut album, "Emulate The Defiler."

Following that release the band was forced to take an unexpected break to deal with multiple shifts in the lineup. This also led to numerous setbacks in recording a follow up album, which was originally intended for release in Summer 2013.

Etched In Stone has pushed on, refining its sound and recording the remaining tracks as time allowed. The band is now set to release sophomore album, "The Failure of Modern Man," this June. Etched In Stone vocalist/producer Brian Lewis, had the following to say about the forthcoming release:

"Releasing this album, for me at least, is a form of much needed closure. We’ve been hard at work on it for nearly 3 years and have had several discouraging setbacks and battles along the way, so I’m not only overjoyed that Etched in Stone is finally able to bring something new and entirely different from what we’ve ever done before to the table, but it’s enthralling to finally be able to say IT IS FINISHED! We are boldly stepping into new territory with this album musically and The Failure of Modern Man is a damn good indicator of what the future of Etched in Stone’s sound holds!"

"The Failure of Modern Man" is set for release on June 24th, 2014. More...

Pushing Boundaries With Krisiun

Thursday, March 20th, 2014. Destruction had just wrapped a ripping set at Springfield, Virginia's Empire, the third stop of the German thrashers' current North American tour. Since I'd interviewed guitarist Mike Sifringer upon arrival, I thought it only appropriate to finish the night by catching up with the support act: Brazilian trio Krisiun.

Amid a slowly waning bustle of gear breakdown and merch removal (what was left, anyway), I stood before Krisiun's bassist/vocalist Alex Camargo. A formidable rock of a man with a menacing death metal stage demeanor, Alex in his downtime revealed a far different, relaxed side at odds with his swarthy "Machete" resemblance and husky voice. Here's what happened... More...

SXSW 2014 Day Four: Spirit Caravan

Saturday, March 14, the roads seem quiet compared to the previous night. Part of this was due to my moving back to Red River Street and away from Dirty Sixth. Everybody seemed tired, and as a publicist opined to me, Thursday morning's crash on Red River casted bad mojo onto the festivities. Whatever the cause, there was no 1001 person to flood a capacity venue. More...

Nux Vomica Posts Entire Album Online

Invisible Oranges is now streaming the entire third LP from morose crust quintet, Nux Vomica, set for release on April 1st via Relapse Records. Give it a listen below. Relapse also comments:

"Closing a five-year gap since Nux Vomica's last full-length release, the record was recorded throughout 2011-2012 at Haywire Studios in Portland, Oregon.

"Blending the suffocating atmospherics of the doom/sludge with the raw ferocity of black metal, punk and d-beat crust, the band's organic heaviness comparably hangs in limbo somewhere between Neurosis and His Hero Is Gone.

"Their self-titled album delivers three epic tracks, creating a forty-minute emotional odyssey into the depths of human darkness; a flawless combination of epic song structures with crushing melodies and colossal riffs with powerful dynamics." More...

Final Conflict's "Ashes To Ashes" Seeing Re-Issue

The mischief makers at Tankcrimes are extremely honored to announce the reissue of "Ashes To Ashes," the 1987 debut LP from Los Angeles hardcore punk outfit Final Conflict. This new edition is due out April 15th, and the label also comments:

"Influenced by the British punk severity of bands like Discharge and one of the first groups to fuse hardcore's simplistic and manic audio fury and heavy metal's musicianship with any degree of success, the spiky-haired punks in Final Conflict manifested a sound that would go on to be emulated by hundreds of bands to come, none ever reaching the level of raw power this LP delivered. Originally issued on Pushead's Pusmort Records in 1987 then later released via Relapse Records in 1994, this monumental release now find's a new home at Tankcrimes Records.

"Available on vinyl and 2CD, the original Ashes To Ashes tapes were found, baked, restored and transferred by Ulysses Noriega at The Laundry Room Recording Studio in Los Angeles, California and remastered by Jack Control at Enormous Door Studios in Austin, Texas. The 2CD version includes the 1985 Demo on the bonus disk while the vinyl edition includes 12" x 12" 24-page book with lyrics, photos, flyers, commentary and more plus a foldout poster. The first pressing comes on in three color schemes: splatter (mailorder exclusive), red and black wax."

Metal Injection writer Greg Kennelty decided to do a track-by-track review for fellow Opeth fans anticipating the album.

You can read his breakdown of three tracks below, or find the full article at MetalInjection.net here.

Track One (6:46)

If you would have told me this was a lost track written between Ghost Reveries and Damnation I wouldn't have even questioned it. The song kicks off with some organ and drum runs that settle into a little groove, another distant keyboard that sounds like a mix between strings and a theremin joins in and then everything explodes into the full band. The song sticks with the Ghost Reveries groove-vibe for a little and then calms down into Damnation pianos and mellotrons with the classic clean-toned droning guitar over top. Vocals come in around three-minutes and they're really layered over top what feels like a beefier version of the first section. Think Heritage with teeth. There's a killer guitar solo and then right before it's all over, there's a really interesting instrumental section that's a little shreddier than anything Opeth have done up to now. Not shreddy as in wanky, but this big full-band unison thing going on that's just really cool. Then a string section and organ fade the song out.

Track Two (5:36)

The track opens with an oscillating noise that sounds like an effected guitar and underneath comes this big, full band groove. I mean one seriously fat motherfucker of a riff. "Track Two" is a lot less progressively influenced than "Track One." There's a few verses, a chorus, a guitar solo and a few little four-or-eight-bar runs between the sections. Where the song lacks in progressive grandiosity, it makes up for by being a straight up headbanger. You know how when "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen comes on and there's that one part everyone head bangs to? This whole song is like that. One of the best moments is the guitar solo, not only because it just rips like mad, but because there's this punctuated, stop-and-go riff underneath that absolutely demands a foot tap at the very least. I would not suggest listening to this song in public because you're going to be forced to react to it in some capacity.

Hades Archer Releasing Split With Slaughtbbath

Chilean black/death outfits Hades Archer and Slaughtbbath are uniting for a special split LP courtesy of Iron Bonehead Productions. The label comments:

"Set for international release on May 16th, each band occupies their own side of this limited-edition vinyl LP, and each is titled accordingly: Hades Archer with 'Circus of Abominations,' and Slaughtbbath with 'Antichristos Thanatos.'

"Hades Archer's side is appropriately titled, as the band who brought you the infamous Penis Metal EP blasts forth with a five-pronged attack of throbbing, pulsing bestiality that's as hypnotic as it is harrowing, perverse as it is punishing.

"On their side, Slaughtbbath dive deeper into the mysteries of the occult, and conjure forth a whirlwind of death energy that positively reeks of sulfur, sacrilege, and salaciousness. Once again, South American darkness rises to devour the light, and Iron Bonehead is there at the frontlines." More...

Stoneburner Streaming New Track

After streaming the track "Some Can" online, Stoneburner has now released another track from forthcoming album "Life Drawing."

Check out "An Apology To A Friend In Need" in the player available below. The band comments: "This song is one of our favorite pieces to play. Riding the line between the crunchy, aggressive riffs and the more subdued, fragile sections gets us high as hell. Lyrically, 'An Apology...' is just that. It's a reflection on those times when it takes everything you've got just to get out of bed, with no room left for others. The dark times when you turn your back on a loved one's pain, because all you've got to give is the poison of your own shitty problems."

"Life Drawing" is due out in North America via Neurot Recordings on April 15th, 2014. More...
