The Rockstar Ramblings: Spring Cleaning

This week a chance to rip through five videos released recently. Surprisingly, this week is low on comedy and one video is very serious. You may even weep. For fans of Fresh Prince of Bel Air this is equal to the episode where Carlton is hooked on speed. I wept for days when Carlton almost died. More...

The Contortionist Enters The Studio

Indianapolis metal outfit The Contortionist has officially entered the studio to begin working on a yet-to-be-titled LP. Guitarist Robby Baca comments on what fans can expect:

"We’re pretty stoked to be in the studio again, especially with Jamie King. Some of my favorite records have come out of this corner of the woods, here in Winston-Salem, NC. We’re also unquestionably psyched about Mike Lessard's voice on these new tracks. This record seems to be a good mix of old and new TC, and Mike's wide range of animal noises should make this one a real banger.”

Guitarist Cameron Maynard adds, "These new songs are extremely refreshing and I cannot think of a more ideal place to watch our creation come to life."

The band has tapped Jamie King to produce and will be tracking and mixing at The Basement Recording Studio in Winston-Salem, NC.

The new album will be released via Entertainment One (eOne Music) / Good Fight Music and will be The Contortionist's follow-up to "Intrinsic," which came out in 2012.

Psychotic Gardening Streaming Death Cover

Winnipeg's death metal troopers in Psychotic Gardening have teamed up with Bravewords.com for the exclusive premiere of their tribute to Death with a cover of "Open Casket" featuring guest appearances from Tim Roth (Into Eternity) and Chuck Wepfer (Broken Hope). Give it a listen at this location.

Andrew Wiens (guitar) comments: “Awhile back, we played with Massacre at a Chuck Schuldiner tribute show and we played ‘Open Casket.’ It turned out really cool with the slow grinding PG spin, so we just had to record it.”

Chuck Labosssiere (guitar/vocals) adds: “As it is for a lot of people, Death was a big influence on us. We wanted to pay homage but also do our own thing with it, slowing it down, making it ‘doomy.’ We like to be creative and original even when we do covers. Both Tim (Roth) and Chuck (Wepfer) are naturally big Death fans themselves, so it just worked out to be this great collaboration and tribute. I’m honoured to have these two guys appear on this song, they are great friends and awesome players”

Psychotic Gardening return in 2014 with new material and the return of Chuck Labossiere after he filled in with Broken Hope for tour dates in Europe and Canada. The forthcoming album "Hymnosis" is set for release on May 13th and will follow 2011's "Humanitorium" and 2007's debut "Hürdür." A promo clip for the new album is available below. More...

4Arm Working On New Album

After parting ways with the band's vocalist earlier this year, Australian outfit 4Arm has issued the following announcement about working on a new album:

"We are pleased to announce that once again Matt Hyde has been tapped in to mix the next album. As we all know by now, Hyde is a well-known producer and engineer who has previously worked with such acts as Slipknot, Trivium and Machine Head to name a few. Since working with Matt on the last album and being gobsmacked by the end result, we didn't think twice in approaching him a second time.

"The album is scheduled to be mixed mid July. Currently we are working on ten tracks still in the pre-production stage. I can assure fans that they are too expect another dose of heavy, ball tearing thrash laden music, with some of our fastest material to date.

Death Valley Driver Entering The Studio

Prince Edward Island's Death Valley Driver will be heading to Adam Gallant Studios this weekend to begin work on an upcoming EP entitled “Carnivore’s Oath.”

The four-song effort will be produced by Paper Lions guitarist and multiple award nominee Colin Buchanan. No stranger to the producer’s chair, Buchanan has worked with PEI bands such as North Lakes, Colour Code, as well as his own band. This will be his first foray into a heavier genre – a challenge he looks forward to accepting.

"When Dan first sent me a message about producing I was totally taken off guard," commented vocalist Dan Hodgson. "I've often thought of myself as versatile and have always wanted to work in different genres but Metal was definitely far from my comfort zone. But after I met with the guys and saw them play live I began to understand where I could work within their dynamic and sound. It seem like a weird collision of worlds on paper but in the end it's all just music. And it works.”

The band is equally excited for the opportunity to work with Buchanan and shared this statement: “For this EP, we really wanted to get out of our comfort zone, and we felt Colin was the right person to help us achieve that. He has an incredible ear and his input during pre-production has been amazing. Expect some new sounds from us this time around – although no less heavy. Colin is an accomplished songwriter, guitarist and vocalist, so we knew going in he could make our band the best we could be. He’s really made us up our game." More...

Sasquatch Releases "Smoke Signal" Video

Los Angeles outfit Sasquatch today unveils the band's first official video ever for the track "Smoke Signal." Check it out below, courtesy of Revolvermag.com.

Produced and directed by Cesar Rodriguez Bautista, VFX artist at WETA digital in New Zealand (Peter Jackson's digital visual FX company), the visually stunning clip was shot entirely in black and white using Super 8mm giving it the old-school classic movie feel.

Elaborates the band: "Scott Baxter, a fellow colleague of Cesar's at WETA, approached us about doing a video. They brought us an idea, we loved the concept, and the team ran with it. They even decided on the song. 'Smoke Signal' won the prizefight. We sat back in our virtual lawn chair and six months later they delivered us the magic. It turned out fanfuckingtastic. Mucho props to Cesar, his cast and crew for nailing it on the first lap."

"Behind the scenes: The house found to shoot in was built in the 1800s on top of a hill and has not been updated in over 100 years. It is located in Wellington, New Zealand. It was full of junk for the past 60 years to the ceilings from a 95 year old hoarder who lived there. He had so much junk that he filled the whole house and guest house, and ended up living in a tin shed on a cot until he died a few months ago. Not willing to part with his hoarding, he ended up in the cold until his final days. Which gives the property a whole new level of eeriness. The new owner, an artist, cleared the house out and we got to shoot in it before any renovations had taken place. It still looks untouched from 100 years ago, which fit perfect for this 8mm project of a scene from the olden days. The night of the shoot was 42 degrees, there was no heat, and the only lighting came from an extension cord plugged into another building on the property. Given the weather conditions, it took a strong actress to wear a wedding dress during the shoot." More...

Strafk To Release "Phaseshifting" Debut

Wraith Productions has set May 13th as the release date for Strafk's "Phaseshifting" debut. The label comments:

"A mysterious Russian duo of Leegheid and Stof, Strafk present Phaseshifting as a four-phase EP. These four phases are divided into four correlating tracks. The listener phase-shifts into a kind of audial abduction almost like a meditative paralysis, transcending visions through audio waves. The tone is set on the DOOMescent lines of black metal/rock - slow, dark, and hallow, like an abandoned insane asylum.

"The unearthing of this recording should not be disregarded due to its recent creation in the capital of spring and summer of the year 2013. The nature of the music seems untouched by time but carries a resemblance of a modern reoccurring sound that stems from the Slavic regions. Thus, we are left with resonance that is phase-shifting."

The album's track listing is as follows:

1. Phase I - (Void)stare
2. Phase II - Inner Distortion
3. Phase III - Death and Decay of Your Identity
4. Phase IV - The New Embodiment More...

SXSW 2014 Day Two: Relapse Records, Monte Pittman

SXSW can be an overwhelming endeavor. From word-of-mouth parties and secret performances to unofficial day shows that the festival doesn't promote, planning takes more than cursory glances. After last year's exhaustive outing, I learned a lesson: keep it simple (stupid) and don't over plan. One best experiences South By Southwest by staying in a downtown hotel and taking pedicabs (or real car cabs depending on the extent of travel). For only $2 a day, a bus is the way to go for Austinites, as long as they're not staying past midnight. More...

King Parrot Checks In From The Road

Melbourne thrash grind assassins King Parrot successfully leveled SXSW with five scathing performances, including an appearance at this year's Tone Deaf Touring Showcase featuring Spirit Caravan, Iron Reagan, Pilgrim and more.

Comments the band, "King Parrot had an awesome experience at SXSW; total chaos, but all in all a hugely positive opportunity for the band to get out in front the world's music industry and show our wares. The feedback we received from some industry heavyweights was that they enjoyed our show and it's fair to say you'll be hearing a lot more from King Parrot in the future. For now though, we carry on with our extensive North American tour."

King Parrot is currently searing the eyes and ears of North America on a near-six-week run of live ambushes. The band is joined by atmospheric blackened doom bringers, Vattnet Viskar, and stoner death doomers, Vaporizer on select dates.

The band is touring in support of the "Bite Your Head Off" full-length released via Candlelight Records last year. Catch King Parrot live: More...

Sigiriya Signs With Candlelight Records

U.K. stoner act Sigiriya signed on with Candlelight Records and will release the sophomore album "Darkness Died Today" on April 21st.

Taking their name from the mystic ‘throat of the lion’ rock in Sri Lanka, their rumble has been moving the Black Mountains of their homeland and they’ve been moving the tectonic plates of the earth via shows and festivals across Europe and the UK including the prestigious Roadburn Festival, Desert fest, Stoned From the Underground among others….
