Every Tuesday, Metalunderground.com checks in with bands from around the world to hear their most memorable Pit Stories from live shows. Today we have a story from Vancouver's Fen (not to be confused with the U.K. act) about a band prank backfiring:
Last fall, on a day off from our BC/Alberta tour we climbed a small mountain in Fruitvale. We reached a lookout and Jeff and Taty sat down to enjoy the view of the valley while the rest of us kept bushwhacking to see if there was a higher peak. Along the way Nando scratched his forehead on a branch so we hatched a plan to freak out the others. We came back down to the viewpoint with Sam and I propping Nando up on either side, and there was blood smeared on his forehead. We said he'd fallen and hit his head and he pretended to be dazed. Jeff jumped up and doted over Nando with a terrible look of concern, helping us as we laid him down on the moss. Then we started laughing. Jeff was pissed. Taty said we were shitty actors. It was the classic horror movie intro.
The next day we were in Calgary at Vern's Bar. It was a Tuesday night and we were stoked there was anyone there at all. After we played, it was The Reckless Heroes, a hilariously energetic punk metal band. They flew all around the stage while people just sat and watched. Still pumped from our set, Sam and I started a pit. It maxed out at 5-6 people so there was a ton of room and we were getting some pretty good runs at each other. The bassist kept jumping off the stage and bashing around with us. At the end of the night, loading up gear I noticed Sam was missing. Jeff said, "Didn't you hear, he messed up his foot while moshing."
Right away I was suspicious, thinking Jeff was setting me up as revenge for the shit we'd pulled on the mountain, but I went along with it, helping carry Sam's gear while he sat in the bar with his foot up on a chair and sipping beer. When it was time to leave he walked only on the heel of that foot. It looked pretty painful, but I was paranoid that the second I showed any sympathy, he would start walking normally and Jeff would jump out of the woodwork and call me a sucker for carrying the extra gear. Two days later the foot was turning black and after an x-ray it was officially declared broken. I felt like a jerk for being so suspicious. Sam played the rest of the gigs in a chair in front of his 4x12.
Fen is out with latest album "Of Losing Interest," and you can also check out the music video for "A Long Line" below. For more info on the band, head over to the Fen Facebook profile here, and be sure to check back next week for more Pit Stories. More...

"On Sunday we mentioned are search for a drummer had came to a close. We would like to introduce to you Connor Munn, who will be taking up drums on a permanent basis for the band, we first practiced with him on Sunday and he absolutely blasted through the songs which is always promising and we feel he is definitely a suitable fit for the band and chemistry is there without a shadow of a doubt!
"Thanks again to everyone that showed interest, it honestly does mean a lot and your efforts did not go unnoticed!
"Come say hi to him when you have the chance! Some other stuff lined up but safe to say, things are picking up again for us and we can't wait to show you what we have in the pipeline."

After announcing the band will be breaking an upcoming release into two albums, Conspires To... has checked in with the following update:
"Well, work is continuing on our two albums, however the heavy one seems to be taking a lead, so we are going to concentrate on that one for a while. We have whittled this down to 12 tracks, and it is looking likely that it will be called 'Nebula.'
"We are hoping to get it finished by the end of the year but will be releasing tracks via reverbnation as we go. The first track 'Across the Sky' is up now so go and check it out at this location.
"The first track from our more mellow alum will be completed and available to listen to soon as well. This is called 'Cold' and is quite unlike anything we have done before. More mellow tracks will emerge but probably after the heavy album is complete.
"We have also knocked up our first full length video, his being a cover of Trivium's Black, and features Wayne and I rocking out in our home studios. You can also check this out via reverbnation. Are you can watch the rest of our videos at YouTube." More...

Savannah-based quintet Kylesa has announced the title and release date for the band's forthcoming album and follow-up to "Spiral Shadow." New album "Ultraviolet" will hit the stores on May 24th (May 28th in North America).
"Unspoken," a new song from the eleven-track album, is available now for people who subscribe to the Season of Mist newsletter. If you already subscribed to the newsletter, you can still get the MP3 by entering your email address at this location.
“Whereas ‘Spiral Shadow’ was a warm album suggesting concepts of hope, ‘Ultraviolet’ is a bit colder and darker," explains songwriter/guitar player Laura Pleasants. “All of our studio albums have their own unique identity and we've always been a band who strives for something different than what current fads suggest. With ‘Ultraviolet’, we took a step inward and wrote music that we felt we had to write; this album centers around the multiple themes of loss and you can feel it in the music. Everyone goes through it during their lifetime and this record reflects that experience.”
Kylesa recorded "Ultraviolet" at The Jam Room in Columbia, South Carolina with the band's guitar player/songwriter and producer Phillip Cope (Baroness, Black Tusk) once again overseeing production. Kylesa will also return to the road in May with more details forthcoming.

Last month the Lingua Mortis Orchestra – founded by German heavy metallers Rage as an orchestral side project – made its live debut over the course of 2013’s 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise.
On the high seas in the Caribbean, the 15-member band played two gigs in the packed Chorus Line Theater on board of the Majesty Of The Seas cruise ship. Enthusiastic feedback by both fans and the press provided the combo with another boost of motivation for the upcoming recordings of a debut album. The recording is due in April under the musical direction of Victor Smolski. Right in time for several booked festival shows (on this year’s Wacken Open Air, among others), Lingua Mortis Orchestra’s debut record is set for an early August release.
Victor Smolski – guitarist and head of the project – comments on the work progress: “Back from Florida’s heat to Germany’s iciness, but there can be no talk of feeling chilly – we’re boiling over with work in our studio! I’m already back in arranging and composing mode, while mountains of scores are piling up on my desk. I’m already fascinated by the new Lingua Mortis Orchestra songs due to their multifacetedness: Rock-hard tracks, some of them even heavier than those of our latest Rage record '21,' are contrasted with balladic melodies of sheer beauty.
"The first official Lingua Mortis Orchestra album will be something very special for us, as we’ve never created anything like this before. You can look forward to a concept album with long tracks, sung by Peavy and enriched with female vocals as well as with exotic orchestra instruments. I’ll keep you posted!"
Killitorous has posted a studio video update online featuring drum recording, which can be viewed below. The band comments:
"As most of you know, we have been touring a bunch and recording our new album. So here it is 'Studio Update 1: Drums.' Filmed at Garage Studios in Montreal, Canada while recording with Christian Donaldson."

Season of Mist is proud to announce the signing of Canada’s Necronomicon (not to be confused with the German band of the same name). The death metal trio’s upcoming fourth album is entitled "Rise of the Elder Ones" and has been tentatively scheduled for a June 7th release (June 10th in North America).
“Many people know that for some years in the past Necronomicon have been through some really dark years and that starting with ‘The Return of the Witch,’ or what we called the return to the source, we rose out of that period with more determination and strength than ever,” front man Rob “The Witch” states.
He goes on to say, “As for now, some months ago we had the opportunity to join forces and work with one of the most respected labels in the dark metal area. That’s why we decided to move on in that direction. Working with people that care, are professionals, and do what they said without trying to find excuses to not do what they agreed to. It is with honor that Necronomicon joined the Season of Mist family and wish for this relationship to be long and prosperous.”
More information on "Rise of the Elder Ones" will be unveiled soon so keep checking back. More...

American death metal masters Nile have uploaded a making-of clip for “Enduring The Eternal Molestation Of Flame," providing behind-the-scenes impressions of last year’s intense video shooting in Greece.
The track is taken from Nile’s latest necromancy “At The Gate Of Sethu” (reviewed here), out on Nuclear Blast since June 29th, 2012. Check out the clip below.
The clip was directed by Jon Simvonis (Septic Flesh, Devil's Train), who remembers: “Filming Nile, a band with such a strong connection and retrospection to the Ancient Egyptian spirit, was really a creative challenge. I found myself almost traveling in time and space through the whole research process prior to making the video. All of our production and creative department teams, within Magnum Production Studios Co. were really excited to take on this project and bring it to life. Approaching Ancient Egypt, through Africa and using Nubia, a region along the Nile river, was for me the perfect marriage of Egyptian iconic imagery and the regions long religious history. A region that dealt in the underworld and was also the birthplace of the very first Voodoo practices. Two worlds so close, but yet so far one from another.” More...
Finnish metal superstars Children of Bodom are currently busy in their own studio in Helsinki, recording ten new tracks for the upcoming 8th album release. This new album will follow previous album "Relentless Reckless Forever" (reviewed here).
The band has now uploaded a short video from the recording to give an update on the sessions. Check it out at the band's Facebook profile here.
For the recording of the new release, Children of Bodom has teamed up with recording engineer Mikko Karmila, who worked with the band on "Hatebreeder," "Follow the Reaper," and "Hate Crew Deathroll" as well as producer Peter Tägtgren (Marduk, Amon Amarth), who is overseeing production of both vocals and keyboards on the record.
The yet-untitled album is scheduled for a summer 2013 release via Nuclear Blast. Stay tuned for further information.
Since "Dystopia" (reviewed here) was released in October of 2011, Iced Earth has been on the attack in a big way, playing more shows in the past year than in the previous ten years...combined! Iced Earth main man Jon Schaffer comments:
"I feel this is a testament to a new beginning, a new energy and a rock solid determination that will see us taking the music of Iced Earth to every corner of the globe; spreading the awareness of our brand of metal in a way that hasn't been done before. I've never been more proud of this band, our crew, and the people behind the scenes that are responsible for much of our success."
Century Media has also issued the following statement about the band filming a live show for a new DVD release:
"Early on in the World Tour, the band decided to capture this new found energy and passion on film. The biggest question was deciding where to film. When the offer came in to film at the ancient Kourion Theater in Limassol, Cyprus, they were immediately attracted to that idea. The history and culture there, as well as the Cypriot audience, which the band experienced in December 2011, solidified the decision to film the DVD in Cyprus. Filming and recording a 2 1/2 hour show in an amphitheater that is 6000 years old and is not set-up for a rock concert, paired with 40-degree Celsius heat, were just some of the obstacles to overcome. But the finished product makes up for any of the challenges that the band and crew faced on that special night.
"Iced Earth's first officially filmed headline show, Live In Ancient Kourion, will hit stores on April 15th in Europe and April 16th in North America! This incredibly powerful package will come to you in various configurations and, a first for Century Media Records, also on Blu-Ray disk! The Limited Edition Deluxe Book features the main show and a plethora of bonus content on DVD and a Blu-Ray Disc, as well as the entire concert on a 2 CD set (4 discs in total!). You can also enjoy the audio version of the full concert in a 3 LP gatefold Vinyl package or as a 2 CD set. A standard DVD and digital audio download will also be available." More...

"The band has been willing to break the genre boundaries enhancing lethal grooves in a sadistic manner that won't leave any listener in a safe and comfy world. The main theme of the album is full-introspection about humanity sickness and Svart Crown delivers the soundtrack of a bleak world that has already ended to their eyes with this album. The artwork was made by designer Stefan Thanneur. 'Profane' was recorded, mixed, mastered by Francis Caste (Kickback, Arkhon Infaustus, Phazm) at St Marthe studio (Paris)."

Only a handful of days away from the actual event itself, the Heidenwahn Festival has officially been canceled. The fest was to take place on March 9th and featured bands such as Draugr, Cruadalach, Minas Morgul, Heimdalls Wacht, and more.
Cruadalach has posted the following message online about the cancellation being caused by accusations of National Socialist bands appearing on the bill:
"We have very bad news for you and Austrian metal scene. Their 'rightful fighters' from Antifa striked again, have (probably randomly) accused 4 bands from Heidenwahn Festival´s line up from being NS, contacted club owners and media and reached their dirty goal: Heidenwahn had to be cancelled less then 14 days prior the event itself.
"We are very sorry for those poor people who can not find better time spending (pray for them to discover world of computer games, where they could not really insult anyone). They unfortunately have found their ideal victims, who they can insult without punishment. No way to defend yourself, no idea who is behind these actions.
"We wish the Heidenwahn organizers all the best and hope that the situation in Austria will go better by time."

German power metal act Gamma Ray, featuring Helloween co-founder Kai Hansen, posted a teaser for the band's upcoming extended EP release "Master of Confusion." Hansen commented: "We have been away for quite some time. We have released what we consider a very beautiful live product, 'Live -- Skeletons and Majesties', but we felt it was time to release some new music by the Rayz..."
Kai & co. are not afraid to celebrate their peculiarity with humour and irony.
Reading the lyrics of the song 'Master Of Confusion' not too many clarifications are necessary...
Gamma Ray are indeed the masters of confusion, a trait all the fans and also the music industry had no option than to accept and appreciate. They bring chaos to other people's lives, they miss important deadlines, they reschedule the release of the desperately awaited new long player, but they never miss a show, they never let a fan down, and in a world of calculated and career-driven rock stars, they are among the few remaining honest true heavy metal heroes.
"Master Of Confusion" is rounded off with six live versions ('The Spirit,' 'Wings Of Destiny,' 'Farewell,' 'Gamma Ray,' 'Time To Break Free' and 'Insurrection' recorded in Bochum) that were already included on the Blu-ray "Live -- Skeletons and Majesties" but were not featured on the CD release (which included the show recorded in Pratteln).
The full track list is:
1. Empire Of The Undead (new studio track)
2. Master Of Confusion (new studio track) More...
