Pit Stories: The Crowd Surfing Performance
Every week we check in with musicians from around the globe to get their favorite stories from live shows.
Today Cormac Neeson from Irish rock outfit The Answer shares a tale about unintentional crowd surfing. Check it out below.
The Answer's latest album "New Horizon" is out now in both Europe and North America through Napalm Records. You can watch the band's video for "Spectacular" after the jump.
Be sure to check back in again next Tuesday as we share more Pit Stories from live shows.
This is an old one and harks back to when The Answer was just starting out and we were playing a really small club in my home town of Newcastle Northern Ireland. We would play this place every couple of weeks and the place would be packed and hot and very sweaty every night without fail. The crowd also had a tendency to get carried away and forget we were in a club that held 100 people as opposed to an arena that held 10,000. But that didn't bother us one bit.
Not until this one night when I took the mike and decided to jump into the crowd (who were right in front if my nose as there was no stage) and sing the encore down amongst the people. Unfortunately the very same good people thought I wanted to go crowd surfing rather than just shake my shit with the first few rows. Before I realized what was happening I was thrown up into the air.. I say into the air.
The roof couldn't have been more than seven foot from the floor. So I actually had to sing the rest of the song while wedged tightly between a sea of sweaty rockers and a nicotine flavoured, beer stained roof. And they didn't let me down until the song was over. I'll never forget that smelly assed roof!!More...
Sick/Tired Signs With A389 Recordings
A389 Recordings this week confirms the signing of Chicago's Sick/Tired to the label's continually-expanding roster of rampant auditory hostility. The group is planning to record a new LP for release in the Summer of 2014. The following press release was issued about the band:
"Unloading a punishing brand of low-fi grindcore with rabid hardcore and punk influences, Sick/Tired was founded in 2008, formed by ex-members of modern brutality specialists Weekend Nachos and '90s powerviolence/thrashcore activists MK Ultra.
"To date they have released multiple records on labels including Profane Existence, To Live a Lie, Cowabunga Records and others. In 2011, they parted ways with their original vocalist and added A. Jennings from Winters in Osaka, the lineup currently rounded out by bassist Kirk Syrek, guitarist Ben Gonzalez, and drummer Adam Tomlinson.
"A389 today also confirms the first in a series of sideshows for the label's tenth anniversary Bash in Baltimore, Maryland in January. This newly-confirmed sideshow will take place at Sidebar, Saturday, January 18th, and will showcase sets from Ilsa, Like Rats, Sokushinbutsu (ex-Eddie Brock), and Sick/Tired, a matinee show preceding that evening's main event. The rest of the Bash will include a one-off reunion from Bloodlet, the reunion of Integrity's Systems Overload lineup, All Out War, Infest, Haymaker, Noisem, Full Of Hell and tons more, in addition to other sideshows to be confirmed." Integrity Announces "System Overload" CD Reissue
After extremely limited Halloween MMXII and Record Store Day vinyl editions of the A2/Orr+ mix of Integrity's "Systems Overload" album early this year through Organized Crime Records -- which subsequently issued an official LP pressing in September -- Magic Bullet Records will cast a dark shadow on the 2013 Holiday Season with an official CD version of the revamped release. The following press release was issued about the coming CD:
"One of the most vicious and iconic hardcore albums ever, Systems Overload was initially released by Victory Records in 1995, elevating Integrity to a whole new level of international notoriety, yet due to rushed/confused mixing sessions, the final product bore a more modern metallic hardcore sound than the band intended. In 2012, former Integrity guitarist Aaron Melnick and current guitarist Robert Orr collaboratively took on a mission to bring forth the true vision of Systems Overload LP forth.
"Unearthing the initial masters from the extensive recording sessions, the guitarists from two different eras of the band pulled elements of alternate takes of the songs to a new level, incorporating new contributions from both Melnick and Orr with lost solos and divebombs. The new mix showcases a much more organic and haphazardly raw side of this timeless album -- bearing fan favorites like the opening track 'Incarnate 365,' the rabid 'Armenian Persecution,' the plodding 'Jimson Isolation' and the enduring title anthem -- the dark, visionary brutality of the initial recording is retained, but the band's punk and Japanese hardcore influences erupt forth with new vitality, and includes liner notes from both Melnick and Orr on the process of putting the album together. Subrosa Has Equipment Stolen On Tour
Unholy Anarchy Records has issued the following statement about Subrosa having equipment stolen on the road:
"As if life on the road for bands these days isn’t hard enough, Salt Lake City’s Subrosa had their tour van broken into on November 4th while stopping for a bite to eat in Sacramento en route to the band’s next stop in Oakland.
"The van sustained damage, and the band lost two violins, several electric guitars, a bass guitar, and a gear bag containing money and personal belongings.
"In light of these unfortunate circumstances, friends of the band have established a site on YouCaring.com for donations. Subrosa will also provide some merchandise as a gift to those who choose to donate over $30.
"Every penny donated will go directly towards recouping the losses Subrosa incurred during this event that significantly degraded their ability to tour in support of their exceptional new album, More Constant Than the Gods."
Fans can donate to to help out Subrosa over at this location. More...
Netherlands Posts "Sixteen" Video
With Netherlands' new album, "Silicon Vapor," released last week, BurningAmbulance.com today presents the premiere of the Brooklyn trio's latest video for the song "Sixteen." Check it out in the player below. The full album is also available for streaming right here.
Burning Ambulance is the blog and quarterly magazine of Phil Freeman, whose writing has appeared in The Village Voice, The Wire, Alternative Press, Jazziz, and more. Freeman writes, "Silicon Vapor is a genuinely unique record; its songs blend face-punching stoner-metal riffs that'll entice fans of Kyuss or Sleep with ultra-theatrical vocals that are part Muse, part Cardiacs, and at time hit pitches high enough to recall Budgie's Burke Shelley."
Of the "Sixteen" video, directed by Allison Berkoy, Freeman writes, "'Sixteen' is one of this weird album's weirdest songs; the keyboards occasionally make a noise not unlike Morphine's punchy baritone sax riffs, and the wordless vocals in the beginning are truly eerie, particularly when combined with the odd, water-fixated imagery of the video."
Netherlands is fronted by Timo Ellis, a composer and multi-instrumentalist whose 20-year career has seen him collaborate with Yoko Ono, Melvins, John Zorn, and many other greats. Netherlands' second album, "Silicon Vapor" was recorded by John Davis (Moby, The Roots), mixed by Bryce Goggin (Swans, Pavement), and mastered by Ron Shaffer (Tricky). More...

Job For A Cowboy Announces Studio Drummer
Job for a Cowboy is currently writing a fourth full-length album, and the follow-up to 2012's "Demonocracy" album. Last week, it was revealed that the band would be moving forward without long time drummer Jon "Charn" Rice. Rice personally explained the circumstances surrounding his departure:
"As of this past August, I have decided to part ways with Job for a Cowboy. There are a few reasons for this, none of which I'm going to get into. That being said, I have no intentions of stopping touring or playing. I honestly love to tour and play live with new people, so I look forward to playing in new musical arenas in the future. The dudes and I are on very good terms with this and they understand the decision. They have a new record in the making and I'm extremely excited to hear it. Thanks again to everyone."
With a new album in the process of being written and scheduled to be recorded with Jason Suecof this winter, Job for a Cowboy has enlisted the drumming talents of Danny Walker to fill in as the studio drummer. Walker is known for his work in Intronaut, as well as having performed with Exhumed, Jesu, Phobia, Murder Construct, and more.

Manowar Taps Hamilton Sterling
Following movie and theater legend Brian Blessed (“Hamlet,” “Flash Gordon”) Manowar has now teamed up with another Hollywood veteran - sound designer Hamilton Sterling - for “The Warrior’s Prayer MMXIV” fromforthcoming new album “Kings Of Metal MMXIV.”
Brian Blessed had recorded the epic narration earlier this year and called it “a brilliant piece of writing” and the collaboration with Manowar “completely miraculous and life changing.”
“Brian did a sensational job! He didn’t just narrate the story. He performed it.” said Manowar bassist and producer Joey DeMaio. “When you listen to the narration, you feel like you are watching a short Hollywood movie. We instantly knew that we had to complement Brian’s outstanding performance with sound effects of the same quality. We searched for another Hollywood heavyweight, and Mr. Hamilton Sterling was the perfect choice!”

Skinless Re-Signs With Relapse
Relapse Records is extremely proud to announce the official re-signing of recently reunited New York death metal legends Skinless, who also recruited the confusingly named Dave Matthews as a new guitarist last week.
Formed in 1992, in Albany, New York, Skinless has released four full-length albums and numerous EPs throughout a 20+ year career. After disbanding in 2011, the group is now back together with the classic "Progression Towards Evil" lineup (vocalist Sherwood Webber, guitarist Noah Carpenter, bassist Joe Keyser and drummer Bob Beaulac) plus the recent addition of Dave Matthews on second guitar.
Comments vocalist Sherwood Webber: "Relapse Records! I'm sure it's rare for a band to speak so highly of their label after a thirteen-year relationship. It's an honor to have such a team to work with. Relapse's support and friendship is beyond appreciated. The Relapse experience is hard to explain, but you can notice immense camaraderie between all the bands on the roster. It's been one of the great privileges I've had in the music business to be a part of the Relapse family. Thanks guys, tell the world it's doomed!"
Adds founding guitarist Noah Carpenter: "We're proud to be a part of the sadistic Relapse family once again. Skinless is far overdue for a new album so that will be our priority for the next year. Basically we're going to put the Progression, Foreshadowing and Trample albums into a blender, add some guitar solos and serve up the heaviest Skinless release yet."
The group will soon begin writing a follow-up to 2006's "Trample The Weak, Hurdle The Dead," which is expected to be released in late 2014. You can also catch the band live:

Singer John Kevill had this to say about the video shoot: "We went out to the most desolate stretch of highway we could find out in the Mojave desert. The Obsessed To Re-Issue "The Church Within"
Biker metal, doom metal, stoner metal... whatever metal subgenre in which you wish to place him, Scott "Wino" Weinrich has been at the forefront of it for over thirty years.
The unmistakable rasp of his vocals and thick, fuzzy Gibson guitar tone have spearheaded bands ranging from Saint Vitus to Spirit Caravan to Probot, but for many his crowning achievement (and most accessible) was "The Church Within," the last album he created with his first band, The Obsessed.
Originally released via Columbia in 1994, "The Church Within is being reissued by Real Gone Music on CD and double 180-gram gatefold vinyl with two bonus tracks -- the single, "Mental Kingdom," and the unreleased number, "Melancholy Grey" -- added photos, the original album art with lyrics and a new note from Wino himself. Interview
Interview with Goatcraft
Lonegoat is the sole conductor of the keyboard-derived moods known as, Goatcraft. While he offered no argument against our saying his music has a sinister quality, there is a duality inherit in Goatcraft that properly reflects the human heart.
Instrumentals such as those found on his first recording, “All For Naught,” are best consumed in front of a fire while flames illuminate red-wine filled crystal. It's music that engages one's mind, as opposed to the manic energy released through a guitars-and-drums-metal band. However, Lonegoat gives a face, a bloody one, to his music.
The towering front man captivated audiences in the southern Texas area to the point that Corey Mitchell invited him to play the first ever Housecore Horror Film and Heavy Metal Festival. Sure, Goatcraft isn't a metal band, but neither is Goblin. Mitchell was so impressed with Lonegoat's performance at the pre-party show that he penciled in Goatcraft to perform on the last day of the festival before Goblin's onstage orchestrations of the Dario Argento film “Suspiria” enthralled over 1,500 fans. Warfather Reveals Debut Album Details
After months of secrecy spent in the crypts finalizing the details on debut recordings, today death metal horde Warfather finally declares new battle plans. The new full-time project fronted by ex-Morbid Angel bassist/vocalist Steve Tucker, Warfather was initially announced in mid-2012, but has remained otherwise virtually a mystery until now.
As the finishing touches are currently being handled on a debut album, now confirmed to bear the title "Orchestrating The Apocalypse," this band sees Tucker back to fronting a death metal outfit after over a decade since his departure from Morbid Angel, and over two years since his participation as a vocalist and writer in the Nader Sadek project.
On the impending attack, Tucker states, "I am stoked about Warfather and our first album! Warfather is more than just a metal band; it is a belief system and a meeting of the minds, the ones that can see what is truly happening in the times we are living in. Orchestrating The Apocalypse is a warning to the eyes that choose to be blind, and a call to arms to the minds that do feel the coming changes. It is pure blackened, apocalyptic death metal. Fuck religion, fuck the government! This is their apocalypse. Our time is NOW!" More...
