Pantera, Superjoint Ritual, and Down vocalist Philip Anselmo and Housecore Records thrashers Warbeast recently announced that they will be releasing a new split album entitled "War of the Gargantuas." The split now has an official release date of January 8th, 2013 and will include two songs from each artist.
This album serves as the first release of any solo work by Philip Anselmo during the span of his nearly 30-year legacy. Also, the two Warbeast tracks on the split feature former bassist Alan Bovee before his departure from the band. Since then, Dre Karst has joined on bass.
“This split is a glimpse into the future of both my solo project and ultimate thrash metallers Warbeast. The title of the split is War of The Gargantuas and it is fitting on many levels because of our combined love for the 60's Japanese film of the same name, the power of our combined musical output(s) and our humorous affection that plays out within each of our 'Gargantuan' personalities,” states Philip Anselmo. “Both Warbeast and myself have full length LP's that will be released shortly after this is released, but this split is unique musically. It is a time capsule; a loud pause ‘til we both release our full length products. Enjoy the destruction of music!”
“These two songs we have on War of the Gargantuas were the next level after Krush The Enemy,” states Warbeast guitarist Scott Shelby. “They've been a staple in our set list for the last two years. These songs are a pure demonstration of our unique Texas thrash metal style.”
Warbeast also recently announced the upcoming release of a second full-length album, "Destroy." The album is scheduled to be released in early 2013 via Housecore Records and is currently in the mastering stages. Stay tuned for more information on "Destroy" coming very soon. More...
The Secret is currently streaming the band's entire fourth album "Agnus Dei" online through Cvlt Nation here. The following press release was also issued about the album:
"The incredibly caustic and unfathomably decimating Agnus Dei is the most lethal weapon in this unique Italian attack squad’s broadening arsenal, coalescing the most destructive elements of crust, black metal and hardcore with the force of tectonic plates, constructed of monolithic riffs which take the listener through a hallucinated trip towards a hazy tomorrow, recorded by Kurt Ballou (High on Fire, Converge, Black Breath) at Godcity Studios, as was their previous album, Solve Et Coagula. This month The Secret will tour Europe with Converge, Touché Amoré and A Storm of Light, with much more tour action to be announced into the New Year." More...

Of course it wasn't all business, as the guys also had some personal advice to offer fans for what to do when they are done checking out the latest on Undercroft: "If you have some time left go out burn some churches, break the fucking rules of society, erase these fucking borders, get fucking drunk, support metal and follow your sins." After Mauricio Bustamente left Reign of the Architect back in August, he started working on his new production and multinational band Exxiles. Mauricio comments:
"This production will reflect how sometimes we are exile in life by simple or great things when we are betrayed by something we believed in. At the end there is only one result, abandonment.
"With pain… With anger… With passion, you discover that you learn how to rise, to liberate and fight for the things you believe in once again, at that moment the exile transforms into something that makes you stronger while you leave it behind, to keep walking towards some other kind of exile. That is the reason of Exxile.
"The first album of the band will be a conceptual album and it will talk about loyalty. Loyalty should be a symbol of friendship, politics, religion, love… It will have a lot of stories but at the end they will all have the same direction to become one. It will show how loyalty becomes weak when personal interests are involved in it. More...

"Kenneth Brastad as a singer released two albums with the band Ashes To Ashes, where the album 'Cardinal VII' was released via the label DVS Records. This meant, among other things, that they got to play the Prog Power Europe festival in the Netherlands along with several renowned metal / prog band. As a guitarist in Lucid, Kenneth also got to show his talent, which he obtained with Allstars Metal bands on Inferno Kick Off a few years back.
"Kenneth has been a real boost for the Forbidden Forest, they are working hard these days to create songs for their second album. Kenneth is a musician, who really has the loose style of the Forbidden Forest in the blood. He captured the essence from the first rehearsal, and the Forbidden Forest can guarantee that it will be an incredibly strong second album.
"Album release is planned for 2013, but in anticipation of this, the Forbidden Forest will record a demo in the near future with some of the new material and make it available on the internet this year already! Forbidden Forest is still looking for a guitarist, who is skilled, committed and creative."

Each week, carrying on faithfully in the tradition of bringing the bands that are currently simmering in the underground up to a rolling boil, we feature several quality underground bands in their respective genres. With the 'power' side of the ProgPower USA XIII festival already unearthed in October, the 'prog' side remains unspoken for.
The ProgPower USA festival has taken turns at skewing the balance toward one genre, but has been notorious for bringing in bands who straddle the line between both in the eyes of those with a more liberal view of things. The lines of demarcation are not very clear and the next year's roster often ends up surprising many. Fortunately, many prog bands are able to weave their way into the system and capture some attention. One such band hopped the ocean to pre-empt their 2nd album release, unveiling that they would be selling the CD months in advance at the show.
Few bands brought the prog with such unabashed love as Haken in the festival's history. As the openers of Day Two of 2011, a spot happily filled this year by fellow prog-heads Beyond The Bridge, the boys of Haken unleashed a set list that included one song from their upcoming album, "Visions" (reviewed here,) but focused mostly on the first album, "Aquarius." Multiple melodic themes are developed throughout the albums, with expert re-interpretations for emotional impact linking up with the storylines. Both albums are concept albums, and both involve songs that go beyond the 20-minute mark, showing their prog side.
Haken is a five-piece, with keyboardist and Haken main brain Richard Henshall performing both keyboard and guitar duties. Henshall and Diego Tejeida both focus on crafting synthesizer sounds not heard elsewhere, which often makes for multi-faceted lead tones. Haken bassist Tom Maclean heads a prog metal sideproject by the name of To-Mera with Henshall assisting, as well.
Between The Buried And Me will embark on the band's first North American tour since the release of "The Parallax II: Future Sequence" this February, joining Coheed and Cambria for a six-week tour that kicks off February 4 in Washington, D.C. Dates are as follows:

Massacre Records is proud to release the sophomore album from German/Italian melodic metal outfit Love.Might.Kill in North America later this month. The following press release was issued about the ablum:
"Featuring drummer Michael Ehré (Firewind, Uli Jon Roth, Metalium) and the brilliant singer Jan Manenti, LOVE.MIGHT.KILL appeared virtually out of nowhere in 2011 with their Brace For Impact debut, an album which perfectly combined the enthusiasm of a first appearance with the experience of a long songwriting career, instantly winning over a solid fanbase within the European hard rock/power metal scene.
"One year later, LOVE.MIGHT.KILL are about to release their second opus, 2 Big 2 Fail, to North American audiences, following its very recent release in Europe. Boasting nearly an hour of incredibly hard-hitting, melodic power metal with a dozen anthems, 2 Big 2 Fail was produced by Michael Ehré, as with their first album. Being around for years as the drummer in bands like Gamma Ray, Firewind, Metalium or with artists like Uli Jon Roth, Matt 'Gonzo' Roehr, Vinnie Moore and Kee Marcello, Ehré has made a strong impact in the national and international scene. The songs were then mixed and mastered by Markus Teske (Spock´s Beard, Saga, Vanden Plas) at his own Bazement-Studio."

"Vertikal," the new studio album from Sweden’s Cult of Luna, will be released via Indie Recordings in Europe on January 25th, 2013 and Density Records in the U.S. on January 29th, 2013. The following press release was issued about the album:
"Vertikal marks a much-anticipated return for Cult of Luna after five years spent cultivating the ideas and directing the influences that have helped form a concept for the album. Distilled throughout are themes of machinery, repetition and clear, linear structures honed to the visual imagery of Fritz Lang’s classic expressionist science-fiction film ‘Metropolis.’ The music broods, builds and boils as you may expect from Cult of Luna, but never over-complicates itself or veers from its intentions; it is arguably their finest and most cohesive piece of work to date.
"Cult of Luna will be returning to the live arena for a full European tour, with a new set of dates just announced in April & May in addition to the previously announced period around the album’s release in January & February. There are US dates being planned and the band intend to tour further in late 2013." More...
