Die Choking Reveals New EP

Pennsylvania's Die Choking is prepared to shove a second wave of hyperactive grind/thrash down the world's collective throat with the release of "II."

Following its initial digital-only release in April of this year, Die Choking unleashed a 7" vinyl version of the self-titled debut recording through The Compound. This new EP "II" follows in sequence from the previous release with a continued track listing. The following press release was issued about the EP:

"Once again bearing five explosive new songs in less than six minutes, tracks VI through X show Die Choking swarming with even more enraged and psychotic songwriting, and more of an ominous powerviolence approach, while stepping things up in the songwriting department and delivery on all levels. Most of the lyrics are a critique of society and self. The finger ultimately points back at itself.

"As with its predecessor, the new 7" was recorded and mixed at Mark It Zero Studios with Dan O'Hare (Brutal Truth) -- harnessing all music in one day and all vocals in another -- and mastered by Brad Boatright (Baptists, Code Orange Kids) at AudioSiege. While the first EP reigned in black and grayscale cover art and vinyl delivery, II bears equally bleak scenery in a black and red layout by Jeffrey V. Daniels, and a run of limited red colors will be manufactured. Enclosed in the 7" will be a ocument that will function as a real, personal living will, in the theme of the closing track, 'Tonsil.'"

The track listing is as follows:

VI. Non-Yielder
VII. People Like You
VIII. Spent Fuel Pool
IX. Civilian
X. Tonsil

You can also catch the band live on these dates:

King Of Asgard Posts New Video

Swedish Viking black metal-tinged act King Of Asgard is set to release third album "Karg" on July 22nd, 2014 via Metal Blade Records. Pre-orders are available at this location.

Today King Of Asgard debuts a new video from the record for the song "The Runes of Hel." Tune in below, thanks to Decibel Magazine. The video was directed by Rickard Moneus, and the band comments:

"'The Runes of Hel' was shot at the location of Vadstena Castle, inside one out of four circular cannon turrets. Vadstena Castle is a former Royal Castle and fortress built by King Gustav I of Sweden (Gustav Vasa) in 1545. Vadstena being the city where both Karl and Jonas were born and forged. Somewhat the perfect place for a video to be shot. Thus, one night in May, the key to the city of Vadstena was lent to King of Asgard. A long and late evening, in authentic setting with history's rugged wing beats embracing. Breathing the past and standing on undisturbed soil among ghouls and phantoms. A location harsh, barren and cold as carved for the finalization of 'The Runes of Hel!'

"As in customary and traditional arrangement Rickard Monéus (1897.se), our true companion in arms, handled the photography and the completion of this piece. Assisted by our fellow thrall Petter Fredriksson. Lean back and soak yourselves, as we present to thee; 'The Runes of Hel!'"

Be sure to also check out King Of Asgard's recent entry in our Pit Stories column at this location. The new album's track listing is as follows:

1. The Runes of Hel
2. The Trickster
3. Highland Rebellion
4. Remnant of the Past (streaming here)
5. Omma
6. The Heritage Throne
7. Huldran
8. Rising

Halfway To Insanity: How The Ramones Changed Metal

Last Friday, the only remaining original carrier of the most influential name in rock music sadly left us.

Tommy Ramone, the last original member of the Ramones, was the sole survivor of the legendary quartet for ten years following the passing of guitarist Johnny Ramone in September 2004 and with no original members left alive, the Ramones will now be consigned to folklore.

They didn’t sell as many records as the Rolling Stones, open the listeners minds to new concepts like the Beatles, or even reach the big arenas in their home country, but the Ramones changed the face of rock and roll forever, somewhat literally in fact, as their uniform of denim of leather would become adopted by metal fans not even five years after they released their self-titled debut. This was just one of the ways that these four young Stooges fans would influence the music they were accused of trying to replicate.

The most important thing about any band should always be the music, and this where the Ramones helped to change things the most. Spectators of their earliest concerts in CBGB’s recall a constant barrage of noise, an assault on the eardrums without the musicians on stage giving an ounce of a fuck what the audience thought. A description fit for heavy metal if ever there was one. Of course, the first people to use the Ramones as a template for their bands were many of the young punks in Britain, a place where the band would sell out every time, in larger venues than the ones back home too. The Clash, The Damned and Stiff Little Fingers are just a few of the time who adored the Queens quartet and the DIY ethics they espoused helped bring metal back to street level when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal came along, an early fusion of punk rock and the earlier heavy metal such as Budgie, Judas Priest and Van Halen.

A number of the NWOBHM artists cite the Ramones as an influence, including former Iron Maiden frontman, Paul Di’anno, who in an interview for the bonus disc of his album, "The Living Dead," referred to Joey Ramone as the most recognisable voice in rock. Early recordings of the bands live shows, and indeed the ferocious speed they brought to the recording studio, certainly showcase what could be regarded as an early form of thrash metal. The break neck speed, chainsaw guitar and confrontational vocals fit into any playlist alongside the likes of Exodus or Vio-Lence and before long, several recognised names in the thrash genre such as Metallica, Rigor Mortis, Ratos de Porao and Anthrax would cover their songs, not to mention the band being honoured by another forbearer of thrash, Motorhead in their song, "R.A.M.O.N.E.S." Canker Re-Issuing Albums

Spanish death metal band Canker will have three albums re-issued through Xtreem Music during 2014/2015. The label comments:

"Formed back in 1990 under the name of Post Mortem, they soon changed into Canker and released a killer demo in 1991 where they started to make waves within the national scene, becoming one of the leading acts back then.

"The first planned re-issue, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the album, is the band's acclaimed debut 'Physical' released in 1994, which was produced by no other than Colin Richardson (Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Gorefest...), and remains as one of the top death metal albums within the Spanish scene. This one will come out as a double CD containing the band's Demo '91 as well as the very first and unreleased 6-song Demo '90 under the name of Post Mortem. Release date hasn't been set yet, but will be around Sept./Oct. 2014.

"Next one will be the 2nd album from 1997 'Exquisite Tenderness,' an album that was released through their own manager back then, who gave them no promotion and distribution at all making of this album a rare item and an underrated work. This re-issue will feature brand new cover artwork as well as some live bonus tracks from '95. No release date for this one yet.

"Last of the three re-issues, although this one isn't really a re-issue, but a proper release, is the band's 3rd album 'Earthquake,' which was recorded back in 2005 and remained unreleased until now, so this one will come out during 2015 to coincide with the 10th anniversary of such recording.

"We're sure all Spanish extreme metal maniacs will applaud this series or re-issues since this band means an alive legend within our scene and only the most expert foreign maniacs will know Canker from back in the days, but don't worry!! Both old and new generations will be able to re-discover this awesome band of intense and technical death metal with a thrashy edge full of killer riffs and melodies!!" More...

Havenside Parts Ways With Three Members

Havenside has checked in with the following announcement about lineup changes within the band:

"As most of you already know, Nik and the band mutually parted ways about 3 months ago. There was no hard feelings between Nik and the band. He helped with the writing process for the last 2 albums. He will be playing the Bleeding Through show on Friday. It will be his last show as Havenside's guitarist so come out and send him off in a positive way.

"Last month, we got word that Casey's career was setting off and that he would have to move to New York early July. Casey played his last shows as a guitarist for Havenside on June 19th & June 30th during the 'Living Our Darkest Days Tour.' He will be greatly missed. He helped with the writing process for the last 3 albums. So it's a big loss for us. We wish him nothing but the best!

"Also we recently parted ways with Jaramia. His career also set off working as a forestry park ranger and also had to move out of town. It began to be really hard to continue with him and his schedule, we all agreed it wouldn't work anymore. He helped with the writing process for the last 3 albums as well. We wish him nothing but success.

"Brandon & Jordon will be keeping this band going. We have had some amazing people filling in on these recent tours and we are forever grateful to those filling in on the next tour w/Extortionist! Things are going to be different from here on out, but Havenside will NOT STOP!! We've already started writing new music.

"We have some people in mind to fill the big shoes of Jaramia, Casey and Nik. We will announce that when the time comes." More...

Falloch Announces New LP Release

U.K. atmospheric folk act Falloch announced that the band's sophomore release will be entitled "This Island, Our Funeral" and will drop via Candlelight Records on September 22, 2014.

Formed as a two piece in 2010, with their debut album, "Where Distant Spirits Remain" (see review here), the band worked with Ronan Chris Murphy (King Crimson, Ulver) exploring the atmospheres and feelings found within the landscapes of Scotland to create a vivid journey encapsulating the beauty of this small country.

Thematically aiming for a darker direction with "This Island, Our Funeral," Falloch still manage to capture the atmosphere of the Scottish landscapes while creating a more direct and energetic sound. In writing this album, Falloch was inspired to create a stronger coherent sound as a band and to have more charismatic lead vocals, performed by new vocalist/guitarist Tony Dunn.

On the six tracks of the album, the band takes the listener on a journey from tranquil serene sounds and landscapes through to thick walls of sound brought together by soaring vocals and emotive performances. Recording the drums at Jaime Gomez Arellano's Orgone Studios (Ghost, Cathedral, Ulver) in September 2013, has proved to be a great experience and the band decided to return to work with Gomez for the mixing and mastering in February 2014 after being awarded funding from Creative Scotland to help produce a second album.

The track list for the album is:

1. Tòrradh
2. For Life
3. For Uir
4. Brahan
5. I Shall Build Mountains

Overdrive Details New Album "The Final Nightmare"

NWoBHM act Overdrive, having recently signed to Pure Rock Records, posted details on the first studio release in eight years. The album will be entitled "The Final Nightmare" and will be issued on August 22nd worldwide, with pre-orders to commence on August 8th. The album was mastered by Chris Tsangarides, who has worked with legendary act like Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath.

The British NWOBHM cult band Overdrive (not to be confused with the Swedish Obscure-Metal band) was formed in 1977 in Grantham and are a misunderstood gem for lovers of the genre. In 1981, the band released a three track single entitled "On The Run" – now a rarity - followed by four studio albums since 1990.

The five gracefully aged men present "nine catchy, driving and moving hard rock songs, very near to the border of classic heavy metal, spiced up with several Deep Purple/Rainbow-like Hammond/Keyboard solos." According to the press release: "the vocals are reminding sometimes a little bit of Saxon front man Biff Byford, while original guitarist Tracey W. Abbott is celebrating simple, catchy riffs that are going straight into the ear. Between faster tracks like 'Glass Game' and 'Wasted' or good mid-tempo songs like 'Twisting My Mind' and 'Lost On A Mountain,' you can also find powerful ballads like 'Taken Young (Ben's song)' or epic tracks like the final title track."

The track list for "The Final Nightmare" is:

1. Invited to Hell
2. Twice Shy
3. Glass Game
4. Twisting My Mind
5. Wasted
6. Lost On A Mountain
7. Nightwalker
8. Taken Young (Ben's Song)
9. Final Nightmare More...
