Sunday Old School: English Dogs

Punk rock is well documented as having changed the face of music forever. It certainly left it's mark on heavy metal, with many punk bands influencing the fledgling thrash movement, to the point where thrash’s first sub-genre, crossover thrash, almost completely blurred the line over what’s thrash and what’s punk. But interestingly, this new style went full circle and began to influence many punk groups of the day, with bands such as Discharge and The Exploited incorporating it into their sound. Another respected punk band that brought this harder edge to their music and appealed strongly to metal fans was Lincolnshire natives, English Dogs. The group were formed in the market town of Grantham in late 1981 and by the next year had recorded two demos entitled, "Show No Mercy" and "Free to Kill," earning them support slots with bands such as Discharge and G.B.H. The exposure was helpful for the band, who soon signed a record deal with Clay Records and released their first EP, "Mad Punx and English Dogs" in 1983.

The next year, the band released their first full length album, the rather bizarrely entitled, "Invasion of the Porky Men," which was perhaps their most punk rock orientated album to date. Following the release of the album, vocalist Pete Wakefield, also known as, "Wakey," parted company with the band and was replaced by Adie Bailey, formerly of Ultraviolent. It was also around this time that the band brought in guitarist, Graham "Gizz" Butt, who was very important in the history of English Dogs as he brought with him a metal style of guitar playing, which changed the course of the band’s music. Naoith Recruits Tomas Garcia

Chilean math metal band Naioth announced that drummer Tomas Garcia (ex Daedius/Bluesur) has been added as a permanent member. Members of Naioth commented upon making him a permanent fixture in the band:

"When he did the audition for the spot of the drummer, he came in and performed the track “Seed Of Truth.” Right there we saw his technical precision, and that he was very dynamic and fast. We said to ourselves, this is our guy; he gained the spot deservedly."

Tomas Garcia commented: "I’m very happy because I’m able to participate in Naioth. I like the challenge of playing its drum tracks, as this will allow me to grow and learn my own instrument even more. I learned about Naioth at the Prog Fest in Valparaiso where we shared the stage, and I liked, right there, the energy and the show that they had."

Currently Naioth is finishing the demos for its second album. The band expects to start tracking very soon, so they can be doing shows by the end of 2014. More...

Pale Horseman Streaming Album

One year since the release of its debut album, Chicago sludge quartet Pale Horseman is ready to unleash its second offering. “Mourn The Black Lotus” will be self-released on July 7th and Idioteq is now hosting an exclusive stream of the record.

“Mourn The Black Lotus” was recorded earlier this year and mixed and mastered at Comatose Studio by Dennis Pleckham, also an axe-man for the mighty doom purveyors Bongripper, and contains a remix of the “Fork in the Road” track from the first self-titled Pale Horseman record - done by none other than Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu). The band commented:

“Two especially interesting facts about that whole deal are that we let Justin choose which one of our songs he wanted to remix; he himself chose the one song he felt he could work with the easiest, and also that we gave him absolutely no ideas or input as to which direction he should take it, other that the fact that I made it clear we are all huge Godflesh fans!

He made our song sound just like classic Godflesh and we couldn't be happier with the end result! The remix, the mix, and the mastering are all immaculate, in our opinion; Pale Horseman touched by the hand of God, as far as we're concerned.”

Stream “Mourn The Black Lotus” and read more commentaries on the album at this location, and also check out sixteen-minute album track "Clairvoyant" below. More...
