Column
Sunday Old School: White Spirit
The New Wave of British Heavy Metal has been studied, mentioned and dragged up time and time again throughout the history of this here column; and with good reason. It gave the genre some of the greatest bands in the field and revitalised the friendly rivalry between the British and American heavy metal scenes. While the Midlands gets a lot of attention for producing such NWOBHM acts as Diamond Head and Blitzkrieg, as well as icons such as Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, the North East contributed massively to the scene with the likes of Venom, Raven and Neat Records, as well as today's featured band, White Spirit.
White Spirit were formed in the coastal town of Hartlepool, most famous for the legend that the locals hung a monkey during the Napoleonic wars, believing it to be a French spy, in 1975 by drummer Graeme Crallan and guitarist Janick Gers. They were joined in the endeavour by vocalist Bruce Ruff, bassist Phil Brady and keyboardist Malcolm Pearson, displaying a sound closer to that of Deep Purple and Uriah Heep to the more contemporary styles of Saxon and Samson. King Woman Signs With Relapse
Relapse Records is proud to announce the signing of Bay Area-based King Woman. Formed in 2009 by Kristina Esfandiari, King Woman began as a solo project that then later developed into a full band.
Over the course of the last seven years, King Woman has crafted a sound that harnesses the elastic textures and temporality of drone and doom metal. The band's debut EP "Doubt" (released on leading SF avant-garde imprint The Flenser in 2014) paired weighty subject matter such as religious abuse with cathartic, brooding, and hypnotic songwriting.
King Woman recently recorded debut full-length album "Created In the Image Of Suffering" with engineer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Whirr, Wreck & Reference) at the Atomic Garden. The album will see a release via Relapse in the Spring of 2017.
Vocalist Kristina Esfandiari commented on the signing: "It feels surreal to release our first full-length through such a respectable label with a vast roster we respect so much." More...
Skan Issues Recording Update
Joseph Merino of U.S. metal outfit Skan just issued this update from MicroMega Recording Studio:
"Things may have seemed quiet this past year, but far from the such it has been. Final recordings for the year of Škan have begun with the drums tracks finished over the course of this weekend. Bass and guitars will soon begin, followed by vocals. After the mix and mastering are complete, it will mark 5 Škan releases for this year with Ván Records.
"On a personal note, this will bring a very long chapter to a close, opening another to further horizons. It has been a very long and tedious path thus far, and I honestly can express that it has been real and worth it. I am grateful to have worked, as well as currently working with some phenomenal people along the way. How the tribe grows. So many thanks to give. So much so I could not possibly name the many here. So in the present, from the past, and into the future we sail.
"Thanks to all. Though from a distance the fire is hard to see at times, how brilliant and vast does it glow, ever more so. See you fuckers soon." More...

Serious Black's new album "Mirrorworld" is due to drop via AFM Records this coming September. The label comments:
"The year 2015 started more than promising for fans of high class melodic metal: Serious Black a so-called allstar band appeared on the scene and dropped their highly acclaimed debut album ‘As Daylight Breaks.’ Much to the surprise of many, the band indeed proved to be a real band and they kept their promise of rocking the stages wherever possible.
"So during only a year they not only successfully released a fantastic debut album, but also went on extensive European tours with HammerFall and later Gamma Ray. In addition, Serious Black was chosen to be special guest on Kamelot’s German Summer shows and also played numerous festivals in Europe.
"Being that active in the past 18 months, it’s surprising to see the band announcing a brand new studio album already. Kerry King Trashes On Trump
Currently touring in support of "Repentless," which managed to become the #2 album in the world last year upon release, the band has also been doing the regular slew of interviews.
In one such chat, Slayer's Kerry King had some choice words for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump... and Trump's supporters.
King came out in support of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton on a recent interview with Rolling Stone. Excerpts from the interview follow.
"I'm certainly not a political analyst, but I think that Hillary Clinton is the safe, correct choice," he tells Rolling Stone. "Trump is just a sideshow," he continues. "I'm not even going to apologize to all the Trump followers." King laughs. "I think the reason he's so popular is because he's like the politics version of WWE. He's sensational like wrestling and that's why middle America loves him."
King thinks that part of Trump's wrestling-like appeal is his ability to talk smack. "He's the biggest liar I've ever seen in politics," he says with a laugh. "I mean, most of them are liars, but he just outright in-your-face lies."
When Rolling Stone mentions that King might offend some of his more conservative fans, he says his opinion shouldn't make any difference to them. "People just have to make up their minds and not be into things because their friends are into it or because their girlfriend or their spouse or whoever is into it," he says. "People have to be individuals. ... Sounds like I'm talking about religion, doesn't it?" He laughs.
In other news, Slayer also has a "Repentless" comic series on the horizon and release a music video for "You Against You." More...
