Pit Stories: Bazaar Of The Bizzare

Tuesday's here and it's time for another round of heavy metal Pit Stories! This week sees a host of tales from across years worth of attending shows all brought together in one place.

Joeseph Woodbury of Armed With Books shares a veritable bazaar of the most bizarre events from heavy metal and hardcore shows. From overly drunk assholes at grind shows to truly odd one-man performances, he recalls the events in question like this:

With over 15 years of playing and attending shows, I have seen many things that are worthy of a mention, and to be honest I’m finding it hard to pin point just one story. The most horrific was seeing a man stage dive, the crowd parted and I watched him land head first onto a concrete floor. He laid there twitching, some people tried to help but because of the injury sustained nobody wanted to move him in case he had also damaged his spine. The band stopped playing and were just looking around like WTF do we do. Thankfully an ambulance crew turned up very rapidly and the band and moshing resumed before the man was even out of the room.

Probably the strangest stories from shows I have played seem to come in the form of the opening act. I once had a man open for me wearing nothing but pants and a horse head mask playing feedback for 10 minutes. I also had a man with what I can only call a keyboard and a Sega Mega drive hooked up to a big speaker, playing his own version of the kids song "Head Shoulders Knees and Toes" with dance moves included.

But the most violent would be when I watched a grindcore band play to a small crowd in a tiny pub. Some guy was pissed as a fart and stumbling all over the place. He was on stage with the band continuously knocking into the guitarist and trying to sing into the mike, the band was getting very annoyed with him as too were the crowd. The band was about 12 minutes into the set and for a grind band probably 15 songs deep, the drunken guy then stumbles and falls face first into the drum kit, knocking over the ride and floor tom, almost pushing the drummer off his stool.

Obviously, the band stop playing to see what this idiot had done and without even thinking the drummer hits the drunk guy over the head with his stick as hard as he could before the guy had a chance to stand up. The sound of wood on skull, froze the whole room, the thud was frightfully grotesque. The drunken man tries to stand like nothing had happen and the hit had maybe sobered him up, but the moment he put his hands to his face and realized his eye socket was sunken inwards to an unrecognizable shape, his face went white and he collapses onto the floor, falling forward once again in to the kit. The drummer realizing the seriousness of this assault begins to quickly pack away his breakables.

The band silently follow suit and all 4 members are out of the venue before anyone has a chance to say a word. I don’t know what happened to the drunken guy but I do believe he deserved what he got. Yes it was a seriously hard hit he took, but not only did he ruin the bands night who had probably traveled miles to get to the venue, the promoter who took weeks in planning the show. He ruined the night for all members of the crowd who had paid money to watch.

A vinyl edition of "Honestly, Honesty" from Armed With Books is due out on August 5th, 2016. You can follow the latest on the band over at Facebook here. More...

Inquisition Streaming New Song

Inquisition has premiered a third crushing new track off the absurdly titled "Bloodshed Across The Empyrean Altar Beyond The Celestial Zenith."

The new song, featuring equally obnoxious title "Vortex From The Celestial Flying Throne Of Storms," is now streaming below. Regarding the new track, guitarist/vocalist Dagon (which is really too short a name, if you ask me) comments:

"In the universe where order within disorder mirror the struggle of two astral gods, serpent versus eagle as they battle upon their thrones for the supremacy of quantum mechanic laws, a vortex left behind their war thrones sets motion to death portals within our stellar black ocean generating a cosmic whirlpool of infinite movement and renewal at every level consuming all matter and light." Excellion Posts EP Trailer

Ahead of the release on August 6th of Excellion’s new EP, "Unsean," the band has launched a teaser video that can be seen below.

“For ‘Unsean’ we took a different approach totally; it is our first work since we established ourselves in Mexico City. We’re all sharing the same home right now, so it was a new interesting way to write music for Excellion,” commented backing vocalist and bassist Adrian Vilbel. “We were all involved in the moment when someone had an idea and he just called the rest of the group, and just like that, suddenly we were working on a whole song right there. It didn’t matter if it was late at night or too early in the morning, it has been a fun ride and we’re really proud of the results we’ve gotten.”

The title of the EP, "Unsean," is not a typo but rather a wordplay. As singer and guitarist Frozen Chava explains: “There seems to be a lot of people that believe it’s a typo and well, it’s definitely not, but we expected that too when we decided to name our new work like that. It’s actually a word play where we used 'Unseen' and at the same time 'Sea' because that’s exactly the concept behind this new music. We humans actually know more about the space than the sea, it’s shocking that we only know about five percent of this vast amount of water on the Earth’s surface and that’s something to reflect about. There is a lot of mystery and things to discover down there, so yeah, that’s what UnSEAn is really about.” More...

Hammers Of Misfortune Comment On "Dead Revolution"

John Cobbett is a staple in the San Francisco metal scene. Including masterminding and guitar picking for his main band, Hammers of Misfortune, he’s also split his time between Slough Feg, Ludicra and Vhol. He’s responsible for making some of the best music in the Pacific Northwest. Whether plating his licks with amour first sculpted by bands like Storm and early Satyricon, vintage NWOBHM or a serene acoustic passage, at par with Pink Floyd or King Crimson, Cobbett has a penchant for writing memorable tunes.

Being the staple he is in the ‘Frisco scene, it’s not surprising the town has entered his music’s vocabulary. “Dead Revolution,” the latest opus by Hammers of Misfortune (released via Metal Blade on July 22nd) is somewhat of a goodbye album to the place Cobbett calls home. His lyrics reflect a disenchantment of the city that he once loved, the city for which he makes his living.

Upon receiving my call, Cobbett told me how he plans to move to Montana. The salty shores of the Bay will be replaced by mountains and woodlands. City concrete will be replaced with grasslands. This will certainly affect the way Cobbett writes future albums. Read further to learn more about this shamefully under-recognized artist. More...

Hell Camino Premieres "Vertigo" Video

Do you dig Down, Clutch, or Corrosion Of Conformity? Then you'll want to check out this killer new Hell Camino vid for "Vertigo!"

Hell Camino is a stoner/doom band based out of the Heart of Dixie - Little Rock, Arkansas - formed in 2014 by twin brothers Larry “Hash” Williams (bass/vox) and Lefty Williams (lead guitar/vox).

With the soul of the blues and the heaviness of 70's hard rock, next throw in whiskey, weed, women, guns, and fast muscle cars to reach the Hell Camino sound.

"Vertigo" is taken off the band's latest album "Orange Lily," which was mixed and recorded by Jason Tedford at his Wolfman Studios in Little Rock and released last month via Chrome Mountain Records.

According to Lefty Williams, the song and video for "Vertigo" is all about how a person feels when they are fighting drug addictions, dizziness, the withdrawals, crying themselves to sleep at night, anxiety and subsequent failed relationships.
