Pit Stories: Flipping Off And Getting Off
You know what Tuesday means: time for some more Pit Stories from metal shows!
In recent weeks we've covered acquiring some interesting scars, making a fool of yourself in front of guys who would later be your band mates, getting crushed by a wall of death, and an ill-fated train ride to see The Misfits.
Today we've got a tale of the odd ways people behave at shows, from hating on the band to straight up getting it on in the pit rather than just heading home for the hanky panky.
Shawn Pelata of U.S. power / thrash metal band Final Sign tells the story like this:
Back in the very early 1990s, I was in a band called Oracle. We did what a lot of bands did at the time. We played a lot of shows, wrote a lot of songs, did some recording and basically tried to be rock stars. We played kind of a blend of power metal and thrash. We slugged it out in the clubs in the area like any other metal band, and we saw our fair share of strange things. At one of our shows in particular, I saw two.
One evening in Winston-Salem, NC, as we played our sets (we would play two sets of all original material back then), periodically I would see a man pacing back and forth, from one side of the stage to the other and back again. He was carrying a beer...and he was flipping us off. Now, it wasn't uncommon to see a bunch of middle fingers in a rowdy crowd back then. It was almost a salute. However, this guy, seemed to really hate what we were doing. He slowly, intentionally, made his way back and forth behind the crowd, his middle finger raised high and aimed directly at the stage, and was just glaring at us. I saw him 3 or 4 times throughout the night, but never saw him once we were off stage.
That same evening, as we played our song "Valley Of Sadness," one of my guitar players and I noticed a man and woman in the crowd just straight up "dirty dancing." Again, we played like a power metal/thrash hybrid and here are two people, obviously feeling zero pain, just grinding away, holding drinks, to a song about finding your way out of the valley of sadness before your life fades away. Although they were fully clothed, I truly believe she went home pregnant.
Final Sign's latest album "Hold High The Flame" is out now via Divebomb Records / Tridoid Records. More...
Okkultokrati Announces Album, Tour
In support of an upcoming fourth full-length album, the Norwegian mavericks from Okkultokrati shall be touring Europe this coming autumn. The first dates to be announced are support shows with Trap Them on the "Crown Feral Europe" 2016 tour. Dates are available below, with more to be added soon.
Okkultokrati is preparing to reveal the full details on a new album, the band's first for Southern Lord, in the next couple of weeks. The album was recorded at Malabar Studios, in Oslo with engineer Emil Nikolaisen of Serena-Maneesh, who also recorded the "Snakereigns" LP.
The band recorded around the clock, capturing the tracks as they would be played on stage, void of click tracks or tutoring tactics. New member Feffe Severin also joins the lineup on synth, accompanying vocalist Henning, guitarist Erik Svarte, bassist Boris, and drummer Lars.
Southern Lord owner Greg Anderson said of the album: "Fucked up in all the right places! Super original and I can say that I've definitely never heard anything like this! Visions of Bauhaus and Dark Throne listening to Joy Division albums by torchlight in the dark forests of Oslo." More...
Hellhammer Releasing "Blood Insanity"
Century Media Records & Prowling Death Records are proud to announce the joint release of Hellhammer's previously unreleased "Blood Insanity" 7" vinyl single.
Originally conceived by the band in 1984, this piece of metal history will finally see a worldwide release on August 19th, 2016 with pre-sale being launched via CM Distro on July 22nd. This "Blood Insanity" release is limited to a one-time only pressing of 3,000 copies.
Tom Gabriel Warrior comments: "In early 1984, after Hellhammer's third demo 'Satanic Rites,' Hellhammer bassist/singer Steve Warrior, Hellhammer roadie Marco Dinosaur Suremann, and I contemplated properly releasing some of the music Hellhammer had recorded the year before. We planned a NWOBHM-style 7" vinyl single, containing two songs taken from the Triumph Of Death demo recording sessions of June 1983.
"The single was to feature 'Blood Insanity' as a title track, and 'Maniac' as its b-side. The cover of the single was to be a photo taken by Hellhammer photographer Martin Kyburz in early 1983. We drafted a brief typewriter memo, recording the outline for this single proposal.
"At the time, it was difficult and prohibitively expensive for a band to directly contract a manufacturing plant to produce a vinyl record without the involvement of a record company, so the single eventually remained a mere idea, while Hellhammer ultimately signed with Noise Records in West Berlin. The 'Blood Insanity' single project thus languished in an unrealized state until the eventual dissolution of Hellhammer rendered any plans for further Hellhammer releases redundant. More...

Brujeria Unveils New Album
Extreme metal outfit Brujeria will release fourth full-length album "Pocho Aztlan" on September 16th via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The release will be followed by a U.S. tour this October alongside Cattle Decapitation and Pinata Protest.
"Pocho Aztlan" is the band's first release since "Brujerizmo" dropped in 2000 via Roadrunner. It was recorded over the course of many years and at several studios around the globe. The end result was mixed by Russ Russell. Nuclear Blast commetns:
"The title translates to 'Wasted Promised Land,' a combination of Aztlán, the fabled ancestral home of the Aztecs, and the term pocho, which native Mexicans use to refer - not always kindly - to their counterparts born in the States.
"Brujo himself is pocho, a man caught between two worlds. Many pochos are not exactly accepted with open arms in Mexico. Meanwhile, they're too often regarded as second-class citizens in their adopted US home. Brujo has transcended both scenarios through the power of Brujeria's uncompromising grindcore and death metal. His all-Spanish lyrics are as vivid as they are effective: Bona fide tales from the frontlines of the drug war, the racial divide, and the battle for the border."
"A lot of Brujeria songs are true stories," Brujo says. "And if they haven't happened yet, they will happen." More...

Blind Guardian To Perform Full Album
Blind Guardian has revealed the band will be performing the entire "Imaginations from the Other Side" album on upcoming tour dates, including the group's stop at Prog Power USA. Hansi Kürsch comments:
"Good morning, good afternoon, good evening or good night. Be it late, be it early or somewhere in between, I suppose, that matches all of your actual statuses, no matter where you are. As a constant time traveler it is not a big deal for me to cope with all of these paradoxes at once. Where was I? Oh, I have not even started, yet…
"I’ve got something to say. Here it comes. Now. In just a second.
"Though the festival season is keeping us busy for a little while longer (and we’re enjoying every single moment of it) our restless thoughts are moving further, already, traveling to places beyond your imagination (*spoiler warning*). Physically, captured in the Here and Now (no direct reference to 'Beyond the Red Mirror' intended here), our minds are already heading westward and into the future. More...

Chris Adler's Time With Megadeth Comes To An End
In a new interview with MachineMusic, Dave Mustaine has revealed that Chris Adler is no longer with the band.
Adler (Lamb Of God) joined on last year to work on the "Dystopia" album and his replacement has not yet been announced. Check out an excerpt from the interview below, in which Mustaine explains Adler's departure and takes a few shots at MetalSucks and Blabbermouth.
MachineMusic: The band has its fair share of staff reshuffles along the way, a long-running band so it’s natural for that to happen, have you found that your attitude toward that, toward welcoming new people in, the consideration you take into who you want to join the band, has that changed over the years? With Chris and Kiko in the band, do you have other things in mind as to what you’re looking for? Personal chemistry, musical chemistry?
If you’re in the presence of greatness, it’s shameful not to allow that to be great. But let me back up though: Chris Adler is not in Megadeth, he’s in Lamb of God. He was a session guy, he was what you could call work for hire. And he has nothing to do with us anymore, and he is with his band. I am very grateful for his contributions, I’m grateful for him introducing us to Dirk. We still haven't announced who our new drummer is going to be, it won’t be Chris Adler, because he’s in Lamb of God.
As far as having new guys in the band, as you grow up you have a choice either to learn from your mistakes or you’re destined to repeat them. And a lot of the things that I do, because of the nature of who I am, every move that I make is chronicled. There are a couple of websites in particular that would go under if it wasn’t for me, because they survive off of posting every breath I take.
MachineMusic: I have a feeling I know which two you’re talking about. More...

War Master Premieres “Penetrating The Unknown”
Houston death metal troupe War Master returns today with a new track titled “Penetrating The Unknown," which we are proud to be exclusively premiering below.
"Penetrating The Unknown" is taken from the “MMXVI” demo, recorded by Craig Douglas at Origin Sound Studios, while guitars were tracked at the home studio of War Master guitarist, Neal Dossey.
The track is a churning, mid-paced number reminiscent early Death and Obituary. Neal Dossey comments on the group's new material:
“We chose this song because I think it’s more of what people are used to. A lot of the new material is pretty different from what people are used to hearing from us. It’s with a different lineup and We haven’t put anything out in a while. 'Penetrating The Unknown' is more of that mid-paced sound that the older material sounds like. Dobber brings drums to a whole new level.
"We've picked up pace to some pretty intense speeds at times as well as slowing down to very sludge heavy grooves. Overall, the album is a lot more dynamic. Anthony is a brilliant guitar player. He really had some cool ideas for some atmospheric stuff with his leads and everything he did with his guitar. It’s definitely new and different.”
This past spring, War Master released the track “All Light Devoured" featured on the “MMXVI Japan Tour” CD and also set to appear on forthcoming LP “To Live Suffices To Conquer.”
Upcoming album “To Live Suffices To Conquer” shows the band bring in new members as Neal Dossey (guitar) and R.G. War Minister (vocals) return to the fold. Anthony Contreras (guitars) and Dobber Beverly (drums) are part of the new lineup, known from their bands Demonical Genuflection and Oceans of Slumber. Mat Aleman will play bass on an upcoming European tour. More...
