Interview

Myrkur Talks Online Harassment

I first heard of Myrkur after hearing that sole recording member Amalie Bruun was sent death threats over Facebook for often petty reasons. What I always like about metal was that it was a brotherhood. If you were into the right kinds of metal, you were one of us. So of course I was really taken aback by the sheer level of misogynistic double standards applied to Bruun because she dared to make pop music despite nobody going after Greg Puciato for Spylacopa or Chino Moreno for Team Sleep.

Since online harassment is an incredibly topical issue today, I decided that the time was right to get the perspective of somebody who's actually been harassed and have her talk openly and honestly about the experience. It also doesn't hurt that Myrkur remind me of Windir and with Valfar dead, Myrkur is the best substitute there is today. More...

Pit Stories: Never Seen So Much Blood In My Life

I know everybody's still waiting on the second half of that epic pit story from Panzerfaust, but I'm afraid you'll have to wait just a bit longer on that front. We finally got in touch and the band is keen to share their recollections of the event, so hopefully next week!

In the mean time, we have a good old bloody tale from Forty Winters vocalist Xavier Vicuna. Xavier tells the gruesome story of unintended pit mayhem like this:

The date was Saturday, August 15th, 2015. We were on tour with Shai Hulud and xBishopx, it was our last date in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Now, we were already warned that Myrtle Beach kids can be kind of crazy and all over the place, I didn't really think anything of it, haha. Fast forward to the hometown heavyweights Down In It destroying their set.

Out of nowhere someone launches a bar stool with all their might, legitimately across the room; and nails their unsuspecting friend square in the face. I have honestly never seen so much blood in my entire life.

The dude ended up going straight to the ER for stitches and still made it back in time to catch the Hulud set. He was a real good sport and took it like a champ. I snapped a picture next to one (yes one) of the pools of blood he left behind. Great night and show.

What's the most damage you've accidentally done to a buddy in the pit? Let us know in the comments section!

The South Florida heavy metal outfit Forty Winters is currently gearing up for a July 22nd release date for sophomore album "Rotting Empire," coming via Dead Truth Recordings. Check out a lyric video for opening track "Summoning Spirits" right here. More...

Maynard James Keenan Announces Book Tour

The special evening also includes Keenan reading passages from "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" with a backdrop of never before seen photos and videos, as well as taking questions from the audience in what will be a rare moment of direct interaction between the elusive musician and the fans of his projects.

Tickets for the Nashville and Chicago events are on-sale this Friday. Additional dates will be announced soon. More...

Dethbeds Releasing "Dungeon Scum"

Chicago-based group Dethbeds will issue a debut recording through the independent release of "Dungeon Scum" early this fall. A newly-formed outfit, Dethbeds unites a host of influence from a wide array of musical backgrounds, resulting in a volatile concoction of angular metallic, punk-fueled hardcore.

Formed in Owosso, Michigan where vocalist Zac LeDuc, guitarist Patrick Dignan, and drummer Ray Knipe grew up together, the outfit united with Dave Stach who joined on bass, after which the band transplanted to Chicago.

The majority of Dethbeds' newly completed "Dungeon Scum" debut LP was written in Michigan, before the band was a fully realized project. Following the migration to Chicago, the band fine-tuned these tracks and recorded the album with Adam Stilson at Decade Music Studios, after which the album was mastered by Collin Jordan at The Boiler Room, and completed with cover art by Tom Jenkins at Black Eagle Press. The record's seven-track attack takes place within a seventeen-minute spread, resulting in a rabid, explosive delivery. More...

Swamp Witch To To Release "The Slithering Bog"

Swamp Witch is the culmination of psychedelic substances, occult practices, and a collective interest in dark, strange, and ultimately hallucinogenic music originally devised with the sole intent to commit and record ritualistic extremities through heavy music only for the night of 9/9/09. In the aftermath, members found themselves pressed to continue the slow-burning drudgery sparked on that September ninth into the months that followed, leading to shows, recordings, band members towing themselves out of the smog from Central Valley, California and into Oakland (and Arcata, respectively) and finally, the vinyl release that recollects the original material of that evening: "Gnosis."

The punishing, murky layers protruding from 2011's "Gnosis" recordings drip with the trance-laden, drug-induced efforts of '70s psychedelia compressed into the claustrophobic toil and painful repetition of '90s sludge. This concept of "Gnosis" actually seems more akin to H. P. Lovecraft's ideas of psychosis and de-realization as the only thing the feeble human mind can experience when confronting truth (cosmicism), as opposed to gnosis in the classic, transcendental sense of the term. In other words, it's fucked up.

While "Gnosis" was being released on cassette, and finally, vinyl, Swamp Witch had already begun preparing material for what was to become the six claustrophobic tracks that make up "The Slithering Bog." To help achieve this, former drummer Dirk V took up second guitar duties and helped further emphasize the psychedelic undertones heard in "Gnosis," while collaborator Adam T. took on drums. The end result of almost two years of writing proved worthy, as warped landscapes and fungal textures resting somewhere between dream-like and sleep paralysis culminated into "The Slithering Bog" recording of late 2014. A Shadowspell Is Born

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce the singing of Shadowspell, a new melodic metal act born from a collaboration between Italian guitarist/songwriter Aldo Lonobile (Secret Sphere) and vocalist Nils K. Rue (Pagan's Mind).

Lonobile is best known for his extraordinary work with power/progressive stalwarts Secret Sphere. Throughout the world, Nils K. Rue has become a household name, having traversed the globe with Norwegian progressive metal giants Pagan's Mind.
The two musicians met for the first time in 2003 during the ProgPower USA in Atlanta, when Pagan’s Mind and Secret Sphere were both featured on the roster. They forged a friendship that has lasted the last 13 years, leading to the creation of songs between performances and writing duties for their respective main bands.

The rest of the super group line-up features Symphony X bassist Mike LePond, ex-Gamma Ray/ex-Helloween/ex-MasterPlan drummer Uli Kusch and former bandmate of Lonobile in Secret Sphere, Antonio Agate (ex- Odd Dimension).

The concept caught the attention of Frontiers Music srl President, Serafino Perugino and went from being just an idea on paper and a few demos to the birth of Shadowspell!

Aldo Lonobile says that “everytime Nils sings, he amazes me! The ideas we are working on are superb. The result will be a melodic metal album featuring lots of orchestrations, great solos and riffs and killer melodies. You can hear old Queensrÿche, Official Yngwie Malmsteen and Savatage influences! Be ready for a melodic metal jewel. I am very grateful to Frontiers for the chance to release this work which I am extremely proud of!”

"I am really stoked about this," says singer Nils K. Rue. "Some of the lyrics and melody lines I laid down on the demo songs we wrote over the years are really personal to me and I put my full heart into them. Between work with Pagan’s Mind, Eidolon and other projects, the Shadowspell songs were a way to let out the real emotional part of me. Often recorded alone in my home studio, just before sunrise while in a very creative and intense mood, it mirrors the real me in a right way. It was like: I could come home heartbroken, with no one to talk to. So I started to record my emotions right there on Aldo's tracks only to put the whole thing on the shelf the next day, leaving it there for years. I couldn’t think of anyone better to write emotional and heavy music with than Aldo, he's my soul brother musically and his compositions give me goosebumps."

Stay tuned for information on the band's debut release. More...
