Pit Stories: Babymetal And The Wheelchair Pit

Ready for another set of Pit Stories from the metal world? This week's tale twosome arrives courtesy of experimental U.S. outfit Gus McArthur, who shares stories (and some awesome video) of epic pits at two very different shows from Babymetal and Megadeth.

One of the coolest pits we have ever been in was Babymetal's first U.S. show in L.A. The head of their fan club comes all the way from Japan to coordinate the wall of death, which is dividing the crowd in half down the middle and waiting to charge. We stood divided for maybe 3 minutes before the song came in at the right part to charge, I honestly don't know how anyone didn't get hurt. It was fun and good vibes all around, not quite like getting punched in the face in a Cannibal Corpse pit, but close.

Nekrokraft Inks Deal With The Sign Records

Nekrokraft just signed a deal with The Sign Records to release new album "Will O' Wisp." The label comments:

"This Swedish act made it's mark on the local scene and during the last couple of years evolved into one of the most fearsome extreme metal bands to come out of the Linköping region. The band's debut album Will o' Wisp will be out 4th of November.

"Nekrokraft is melodic, blackened thrash metal with moments of explosive brutality and speed. Keeping and old-school approach without being retro, Nekrokraft offers both classic metal influences and extreme metal influences such as melodies, harmonies and blast-beats.

"Erupting like a lava pillar from the Ostrogothia soil that have provided the world with countless of breathtaking metal and rock acts during the last decade. The intrusive chill of Nekrokraft will raise hairs on the backs of both man and beasts." More...

Helstar And Omen Bring Classic Metal To Austin

The masters of high-pitch heavy metal, Helstar made a rare appearance in Austin, Texas. I last saw the Houston band play about eight years ago. This time they came through with another veteran act, Omen. There is about seventy years of experience between the two bands. Neither of the acts have garnered the popularity of similar bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, but their fans have remained steadfast. Old fans and new fans alike were on hand to witness both bands showcase new material, while dishing out the classics. More...

Wretch Streaming "Rest In Peace"

Indianapolis based doom metal trio Wretch will release self-titled debut album, "Wretch," on August 26th via Bad Omen Records. Check out new song "Rest In Peace" below.

Featuring vocalist / guitarist Karl Simon, formerly of The Gates of Slumber, alongside drummer Chris Gordon and bassist Bryce Clarke, Wretch rises from the ashes of the musician's past project, which ended tragically upon the passing of Gates' bassist Jason McCash in 2014.

“Making this record has been the hardest thing I've ever done,” says Simon. “Jason and I met just out of school and instantly became best friends. All of my memories as an adult feature him. All of the songs on this record are about him, about me, about our life and his death. I'm not yet close to getting over the grief. In a lot of ways I've lost my mind. I hope that people are touched by the record. I am often on the verge of tears while playing. It's tough reliving those moments”

“The days of swords and sorcery are pretty much over for me” notes Karl. “No more giant spiders or ice worms. There are real horrors that occupy my mind these days.”

3. Bloodfinger

An independent, late summer release is planned for August 5th in conjunction with the band’s performance at Psycho Las Vegas.

Hardline Returns With New Album "Human Nature"

Frontiers Music srl is excited to announce the return of Hardline with the brand new album "Human Nature" set for release on October 14th.

Following the rebirth of the band that happened with the release of "Danger Zone" in 2012, Hardline have regrouped around fabulous singer Johnny Gioeli (Axel Rudi Pell ) with the excellent production and keyboard skills of Alessandro Del Vecchio (Rated X , Resurrection Kings, Revolution Saints), the shredding talents of guitarist Josh Ramos (The Storm), and the powerful rhythm section made up of bassist Anna Portalupi (Tarja Turunen ) and drummer Francesco Jovino (Primal Fear, JORN ). All these musicians have an impressive pedigree, but what makes Hardline special is how well their unique and different talents blend together.

The goal for their new album was to have a heavier and updated version of the original Hardline sound. Think debut album, 1992's "Double Eclipse" updated for the 21st Century, with a grittier and more straight ahead sound. Anthemic, hard rocking songs are what you can expect from this record and hook after hook, riff after riff, you'll find yourself wowed by this absolute monster of an album! More...

Hansen & Friends Issue "Born Free" Music Video

Coinciding with the exclusive one-time performance at this year’s Wacken Open Air Festival, legendary metal pioneer Kai Hansen premieres the official music video for his first single “Born Free” today. It is the first time fans are able to listen to a song from Hansen’s solo debut “XXX – Three Decades In Metal”.

The album will be released as CD, 2CD Special Edition incl. all 11 songs with Hansen on vocals, 2LP and digital on September 16th through earMUSIC.

Shot at Chameleon Studio in Hamburg where the album also was recorded, the video for “Born Free” perfectly captures the essence of the song. Starting with the line “Born in the city of Hamburg, in 1963…,” Kai sets the direction for his solo debut – a reference, a bow to his home town which is also represented in the images.

Hansen roars into the mic like his life depends on it – like a wild, unleashed beast – and breaks free with liberating screams. Add explosive guitar solos, heavy riffs and the stellar line up that is Alex Dietz (guitar player of Heaven Shall Burn) on bass, Eike Freese on guitar and phenomenal drummer Daniel Wilding (Carcass) to the mix, and you get everything you ever searched for in metal/hard rock. Guest stars to appear on the album include: Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), Marcus Bischoff (Heaven Shall Burn), Bill Steer (Carcass), Michael Amott (Arch Enemy), Sami Yli-Sirniö (Kreator) and Jeff Walker (Carcass).

Or as Hansen puts it in “Born Free”: “It made me feel so groovy – it gave me instant heat.”
And thus a new metal hymn is born. A hymn that will get fans all over the globe to stand up proud and shout “I am BORN FREE – NO LIMITS IN THE SKY”. More...

Refuge Signs To Frontiers Music, New LP In Works

German power metal act Refuge - originally created to celebrate the classic era of Rage material and built around heavy metal icon Peter “Peavy” Wagner - has recently signed a record deal with Frontiers Music Srl.

Refuge, which consists of Manni Schmidt (guitars), Christos Efthimiadis (drums) and frontman/bassplayer Peavy Wagner, is the 1987 – 1994 line up of the German metal institution Rage. The former Rage members got back together at the end of 2014 under the name Refuge to play the old Rage songs from their time in the band. What started out as a fun project with friends, has since evolved into a very special band.

Refuge guitarist Manni Schmidt says: "When we played at a number of festivals last summer, we instantly realized that the chemistry was back. The shows worked out great and very naturally, there were ideas for new songs that we wanted to hold, because we liked them so much. Somehow the guys from Frontiers have heard about this and they offered us a deal. Peavy, Efthi and I are very thrilled to say that there will be a record released full of brand new songs by our band Refuge!”

Frontman Peavy Wagner also points out that releasing a new album with Refuge won’t clash with his other band Rage: “Refuge and Rage are two different bands now. With Refuge, we are able to play songs of the old era that have never found their way to a setlist of a RAGE show. Refuge also consists of different musicians – except me – who have different ideas and a different vibe. Refuge is more like old school. The fans will find out latest when they will hold the new Refuge album in their hands.” More...
