Despite practicing and writing together the last two months, WARBRINGER has official announced that Carlos Cruz (Hexen) is their new drummer. The delay in announcement was out of respect to their old drummer and Carlos' former band mates and there was no question about Carlos' playing, songwriting or personality as the band ironically offered Carlos the spot in 2008.
"After years of putting forth nothing but blood, sweat, and tears into my tireless ambitions for playing music, I have finally found an outlet where no more time is wasted. It was flattering to have been approached by Warbringer the first time they made a personnel change in 2008, but this time around it couldn't have felt more like perfect timing," states Carlos. "They're a collective group of humble, open-minded, down-to-earth guys who share the same fanaticism for music as I do and are the tightest musicians I have ever played with. I've never felt so welcomed and inspired to move forward. Even past members of the band have congratulated me and it feels very much like family, not just another band. From some recent serious downfalls in my personal life came this beautiful opportunity and I couldn't be happier. We'll be seeing all YOU Warbringers out on the road soon!"
Carlos will be making his live debut in Mexico City on March 5th at the Eyescream Festival alongside Asesino, Anvil, Toxic Holocaust and Abigail Williams. WARBRINGER plan to record their third album in April with more live shows in May and June.
Canadian act Korpius has issued the following announcement about a release party for the band's "Shades of Black" album, which will also feature Derelict:

"We look forward to seeing you there. Check out the event on Facebook here.
Vocalist Peter "Peavy" Wagner of Rage has checked in with the following blog about the band's appearance at the 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise:
"After a quite relaxing flight and a surprisingly unannoying entry into the US, we arrive at our hotel which is located directly at Miami Beach. So that is the territory of Crockett & Tubbs. After getting some food at the beach restaurant we indulge in the happy hour at our hotel bar, having diverse free drinks. Later on, we continue at diverse other bars, savoring a few buckets of barley sherbet. At some point I'm fagged out and go for sleep while André is considering getting a new tattoo and Victor is carrying on his pub tour with some coincidental acquaintances, a few fellow Russians.
"Here we go. We try to get to the harbor by taxi which is quite difficult as half of Miami is closed because of obsequies for 2 policemen (Crockett & Tubbs ??) who were killed in a shootout 2 days before. After a number of detours our taxi driver finds a way, dropping us off at our shuttle. The Majesty of the Seas is a gigantic floating tower, having everything on board one could wish for. Pure luxury - in comparison, the 'Traumschiff' (from a popular German TV series) is a bleak nutshell. In fact, all the black, long-haired masses which were populating every spot aboard didn’t really fit the ambience. Just imagine Wacken on sea. We move into comfortable cabins with sea view, being door to door with diverse buddies from all the other bands. A real alumni reunion.
"There are 3 stages, with the main stage being located in a theater (decks 5-7), one deck across a smaller stage in a lounge, and the pool stage upstairs on deck 12. Every band, 40 in numbers, was expected to play at about the same time. Our departure is being delayed for some time because a crane which is to heave the stage elements for the pool stage on board was late due to the jam in the city. Although the departure will be just 1 hour later, it costs the organizer an extra 100,000 dollars as he has to get a new leaving out permission. More...
Swiss metal act Samael is set to release the new album "Lux Mundi" on April 29th, 2011. Front man Vorph has now commented on the album:
"We’ve stuffed this album with so many things that it feels like we’ve created a black hole. We might have come full circle after 'Solar Soul' and 'Above' and the option for us was to leave Samael behind or to add a new layer to our legacy, we went for the second option. With 'Lux Mundi' we’ve put tar on our path and now we’ll be able to move further."
Percussionist/keyboardist Xy also stated:
"Lux Mundi started to take shape in 2007. For almost three years, we have reworked those songs, changed things to bring them to maturity before to enter the pre-production process in 2010. This album can be seen as the achievement of what we started with 'Ceremony of Opposites' & 'Passage' or as a new start for Samael."
The band's latest video update from the studio can also be seen at this location.
Polish death metal band Decapitated is continuing work at Radio Gdansk Studio in Poland recording the band's Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s "Organic Hallucinosis." Guitarist & founding member Wacek Kieltyka checks in once again from the studio:
"The first week of recording is over. We've done the drums and prepared them to be mixed by Daniel [Bergstrand]. Since yesterday, we've been looking for the right guitar sound and we've already come up with a few ideas. We've got heaps of different speakers, heads, effects and we're trying to pick the gear with the sound most suitable to the new riffs. It's very probable that I'll use again a transistor head in conjunction with a tube head - the combination that had always worked out well for Decap. Also, I'm recording in a large room to take advantage of its ambiance and to let the sound flow freely.”
Drummer Kerim "Krimh" Lechner offers another update on drums:
“Hello guys! My work is done. I finished recording all drums in 3 days. I didn’t expect that it would be that fast, but I am happy about that. So now we have more time for guitars, bass, and vocals. These last days we’ve spent listening to all the drum tracks and choosing the best parts. Each song takes us about 3-4 hours and you have to spend a few days to listen through all the songs. Now we will send all the drum tracks to Daniel Bergstrand who will do a first mix of the drums so we can start recording guitars. The drum kit with all the microphones on it looked great but now we had to move it for the guitar amps. Yesterday we tried out the first 4 heads and some of them sounded really good. We will see in the next days which ones we will choose!”
Decapitated’s fifth studio album is being produced by Wacek Kieltyka and sound engineered by Malta Arkadiusz Malczewski. Drums have been recorded with Daniel Bergstrand, who is also handling mixing duties.
Thurisaz has issued the following announcement about signing a deal with Sleaszy Rider Records:

First of all, we're glad to say, that after more than a year being in and out of the studio, the recording, mixing and mastering of the new album 'The Cimmerian Years' finally came to an end. Last Sunday we officially spent our last minutes in the CCR-studio, adjusting and adding the last samples!
"Second of all, we're proud to announce that we signed a deal with Sleaszy Rider Records from Greece (Ancient, The Elysian Fields, Prejudice...)! They will release our third album 'The Cimmerian Years', which will be available in May 2011!
"So... What to expect? One could say it's gonna be a known mixture of styles, yet so very different... It's gonna be the known combination of different vocals, yet so very different... It's gonna be the known soundscapes of bombast and melody, yet again so very different... Let's just say, it will sound familiar and it won't... ;-) Here on myspace, you can check out some new songs: 'My Precious Unknown' & 'Second Mirror.'

The Grammys have been awarded, February is winding down, and we are officially late with our Best Of Year in Metal acknowledgments. So let's get to it. Like every year, I polled our diverse staff of metalheads to obtain their picks in several categories for 2010.
2010 was an interesting year in metal. Was it good? Yes. But not what one might expect at the outset. There were a lot of releases by big names, but most did not make the splash one would expect. Iron Maiden, Rob Zombie, Fear Factory, Dimmu Borgir, Dark Tranquility, and Living Sacrifice all put out decent albums, but nothing too bold or worth raving over. 2010 was one more year removed from the fading metalcore trend; a year in which we could savor thrash's second life, and melodic death metal is still living strong. When the trendiest things are a return to thrash and technical metal (despite losing much of its death metal influences), that's not too bad from a metal perspective.
It's hard to say 2010 was a year for the underground to shine. The true underground bands rarely get widely noticed. But there were quite a few lesser known bands making names for themselves and grabbing their fair share of attention last year. Why is this? Is it a sign of a changing of the guard in light of the aging greats, and perhaps despite the thrash revival? It's hard to say, but personally, I discovered a lot of new bands that I thoroughly enjoy, so I am all for continuing along this path.
Let's get down to the details and talk about those bands that made 2010 a solid year for heavy metal by announcing the Metalunderground.com staff picks for 2010. The staff picks include the following categories: Best Metal Album of 2010, Best Metal DVD of 2010, Best Metal Newcomer of 2010, Best Live Act of 2010, and Most Anticipated Release for 2011. More...
