In a recent interview with Danish tabloid newspaper, Ekstra Bladet, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich stated that the band is looking at entering the studio this Spring to commence work on the band's next studio album, which will be the first since 2008's "Death Magnetic." An excerpt from the chat reads as follows:
"There is a really good vibe in the band at the moment. Previously, Metallica would hang us by the throat when we came home from a mammoth world tour, but this time it's different. Therefore it does not appear to be a long time before we start work on a new album. I think we'll be ready in March and April - when the creative process reaches a boil we'll go into the studio.
"We really enjoy it now. It has helped in our relationship that we all have families and that we have children who work well together. There were some bad years when we never really talked together, we just hopped in a vodka bottle and went out to look for ladies. It meant we did not share our feelings with each other. Today we talk a lot about our children and our families, and it has helped that we have something else to talk about than what setlist is tonight."

Season of Mist has checked in with the following announcement about inking a deal with Nader Sadek:
"Season of Mist is proud to welcome innovative Egyptian-born artist Nader Sadek to the roster! Known as the designer responsible for the stage imagery on Mayhem's 2009 US tour, Nader decided to delve deeper into the metal world by forming his own project. He thus teamed up with guitarist Rune Eriksen (Ava Inferi, Aura Noir, ex-Mayhem), bassist Steve Tucker (ex-Morbid Angel) and drummer Flo Mounier (Cryptospy) to create a death metal project under his own name.
"Nader Sadek's debut is entitled 'In the Flesh' and features compositions and performances by all four artists and has been set to a May 16th (one day later in the US) release."
Sadek also commented: "My general association with Death Metal, deals with the notion of false perceptions, and how great individuality can be smothered by the weight of an overwhelming environment. This idea is ever-present throughout all my work. Each of the players in this album played key roles in their respective bands, facing difficult challenges, and yet taking their bands to higher levels. Their talent as well as their tenacity has always intrigued me. As such, they fit perfectly in this project." More...

Septicflesh has posted the first of six parts online explaining the recording process of the band's new album "The Great Mass." You can check out the first part below, and the band also commented:
"The time has come to let you get a grasp at the full writing and recording process of the upcoming SEPTICFLESH masterpiece, 'The Great Mass,' scheduled for an April 18th (one day later in the US) release. This six-part studio story will be spread over the next weeks. All aspects of the new album will be detailed, from the first ideas back in 2009 to the final mastering stage. Thanks to Hard Rock Mag editor Sven Letourneur, who conducted this interview on last November 15th. PART I - Guitarist / vocalist Sotiris on first ideas and genesis."
What was the starting point of the new album?
I was the first who started composing songs, about a year ago from the actual recordings of the new album. It was something that happened instinctively, without pushing myself. I was just on the proper emotional state to create music. Actually, the most intense musical ideas always come to me when I least expect it.
Who started thinking about the main orientation, did you talk a lot about what you wanted to create right from the beginning?
At the beginning, there was not a specific direction in my mind for the overall material of the album. I tend to avoid to do that on the first stage of songwriting, as I don’t want to limit the output of inspiration. After a potent period of time, when the most soulful ideas begin to stand out from the rest and when all members of the band reach the same songwriting stage, then we start discussing the general direction of an album. Our mutual agreement on the direction then influences our decision making about what idea or song prevails to the next phase and gains a position in the album. We decided the new album would be a step to new dark musical places and evolve towards an almost cinematic musical approach. Seth suggested that we should focus on our most “sick” and avant-garde elements and we all agreed.
Did everybody start with their own ideas then, before submitting them to the others?
Actually, all the members of Septicflesh are songwriters and work on their own ideas at first. When we feel ready, we present the material to one another. Then, in many cases, additional ideas for a song pop up from the other members, pushing it even further. A good example is the song “Vampire of Nazareth”, which was initially based on some ideas that I had. It was then transformed into something even more challenging and powerful, after a great orchestral inspiration which struck Chris when he listened to the ideas and with the additional rhythmical aid of Fotis.More...
Metalunderground.com recently posted an editorial looking at the role religion can play in the genre of black metal, which featured interview answers from both pro- and anti-Christian musicians. The editorial was a companion piece to a recent look at Christian "unblack" metal in our Unearthing the Metal Underground column.
Since the editorial went live, we've had more musicians respond with their answers to the questionnaire sent out to bands on either side of the issue. The latest response came from vocalist Matt Brown of Australian black metal act Fearscape. You can check out Matt's answers to the questions below.
Anyone interested in seeing what the various musicians on either side of the debate had to say can find our previous interview with U.K. act Nierty here, which took a more neutral stance. The interviews on the anti-Christian side came from Ophidian Forest, Plaag, Dehumanation, Frames, and Throne of Malediction. The interviews with the pro-Christian black metal musicians came from Frost Like Ashes, Diamoth, Elgibbor, Renascent, and Winter's Dawn. More...
We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week, Roddy Lane from Virgina metal band Mindset shares his band's complete on-stage meltdown for your reading pleasure:
The gig in question actually took place in our home town (which made the events of that night seem worse as the club was packed and everyone witnessed a band come unglued). At the time we had taken an extended break from touring for our second record. The band had been plagued by in-fighting and label problems, so morale was really low. It was around the third song of the night when I pulled out my cliché, rock and roll megaphone. It was honestly an integral part of said tune, guys. My then-girlfriend had actually spent quite a bit of money on this piece of shit (I’m referring to the megaphone-not myself). Well, the thing didn’t work. Flat out. Because I’m a half-breed, idiot cave-man, I snapped…..and nearly crushed the megaphone into a fine powder. I tried to make light of my outburst by hiking what was left of Mr. Megaphone into my drummer’s kit. Mr. megaphone not only ruined some serious drum hardware-it also hit drummer Kenny in the face.
Being the great guy he is (thankfully) - instead of putting his fist through my jawbone, Kenny began disassembling his drum set with extreme prejudice. Then he walked off the stage. Our guitar player, for some insane reason, launched into the intro of what would’ve been our fourth song (keep in mind we hadn’t even made it to the first chorus of the third song). He tried so hard to keep things together, but ignorant minds prevailed that night. Our little nightmare continued as the guitarist and I realized that bass player John hadn’t been playing ANYTHING. He was having a meltdown of his own. John had evidently unplugged his bass during the second song (don’t ask me how none of us noticed) and laid it face down on the stage. Then he stood on it and stared blankly at the crowd.
We all knew the evening was FUBAR and there was no fixing anything at that moment. Especially after I told the HOME CROWD they could collectively fuck off. Completely unnecessary. Then I smashed the vocal mic into my forehead as hard as I could. I walked off stage, out the front door of the club, and drove the hell home. Good night friends and family - you all just paid ten bucks a head to see Mindset play for less than 15 minutes.
Mindset (not to be confused with the Maryland hardcore punk band of the same name) previously released a couple of albums on Noise Records and is currently unsigned, although they did recently release an "Unearthed" collection via Sacrifice Records. You can hear some of their music on the band's MySpace page. Roddy also has a solo record and a project called The Fifth Column.
Check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.

Finland's Barren Earth is currently on tour in North America. The band has now checked in with the following report from the road:
"And so we have arrived in the New World. Our venture started on Sunday morning. Meeting fellow countrymen, Rotten Sound, at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, we embarked on our flight. In the plane I was sat next to an elderly lady, who as it transpired was suffering from a severe allergy of wheat, known as the celiac disease.
"During the flight I was incessantly provided with information on her allergy to the very minutest detail, including diarrhoeatic symptoms and whatnot. I found out more than would’ve been necessary. On the other hand, I am now rather well educated on the subject of wheat allergy…
"Despite assurances from Mikko that the flight would have no limitations as regarding the serving of free alcohol, this proved not to be the case. Having been served free beer with the on-flight lunch, Mikko was dismayed to have his further requests of free-of-charge booze turned down. Now the steward demanded payment! But Mikko was not taken aback by this. Ever the resourceful chap that he is, he quickly produced a bottle of tax-free Finlandia of his own, which he had stashed away.
"By this time the seemingly endless lecture on the celiac disease was taking its toll on me. What the situation clearly demanded was a drink of vodka and coke. I handed a paper cup over to Mikko and requested for a helping of Finlandia. Mikko generously filled over half of the cup. Though I appreciated the gesture as such, it quickly proved to be hazardous for the paper cup, which obviously was not designed to withhold liquids of this type. As the cup was literally falling apart in front of my very eyes, and as the vodka was visibly trickling down from the bottom of the cup , there was no choice but to down the drink in one gulp. So, what was originally intended to be a relaxing, savory drinking moment, turned out to be a quick and heady shot instead. But it did make the ongoing wheat allergy-lecture a notch or two less unbearable.
"At JFK, another type of vodka-and-coke-dilemma presented itself to the lads of Rotten Sound. Before checking in for our connecting flight to Orlando, they realized they had virtually a whole bottle of Finlandia to dispose of. Unallowed to bring the bottle on board (Bring-Your-Own-Bottle not being a policy recognized by the Airline Regulations Commission), it had to either be consumed on the spot, or thrown away. Time was running. Decisions were having to be made. The choice was clear: n for monthsot a single drop of Finlandia was to be wasted. Mixing the vodka with modest amounts of Coke Zero, Rotten Sound provided our traveling party welcoming/farewell drinks to JFK. Given that the amount of Coke was significantly smaller than that of the booze itself, the drink was almost transparent, with only the tiniest hint of brown. This gave a whole new meaning to ’Coke Zero’, as in proportion to the vodka, the amount of Coke was indeed quite close to zero. More...

"To the loyal fans of Six Feet Under. Our long time friends and band-mates, Terry Butler (bass) and Greg Gall (drums), have decided to move on and depart from SFU. Steve Swanson (guitar) and myself are grateful for all the fun times we've shared together through the years, and wish them the best of luck in their musical endeavors.
"Just to fill you all in, Steve and myself are very excited about the future of the SFU, and I have been working hard on writing the new SFU material for the past four months with a new writing partner.
"I will make this guarantee and promise to all the fans of Six Feet Under; the new line up will be a death metal force to be dealt with, with the long awaited addition of a brutal as fuck drummer and riffs that will rip your face off, vocals ala 1993-1995...
"Thank you all for your continued support and devotion, see you soon!"

Symphonic metal act Within Temptation has posted the first video in a three part series of album trailers. The trailers are promoting the band's forthcoming studio album "The Unforgiving." The band commented on the trailer by saying:
"The first of three short films, to be released this year. These movies give further insight into the concept of [the] fifth studio album "The Unforgiving" and are based on the comic storyline; the characters are impersonated by actors. Each film is followed by a band performance that, all together, form a dark and compelling tale of life, love, revenge, rage, and regret. The first movie, titled 'Mother Maiden,' ties in with the band's first single & video for 'Faster', introducing the main characters of the narrative."
Bonded By Blood bassist Jerry Garcia has posted the following update online about the band being involved in a van accident:
"Shit just hit the fan! We were on our way to Trenton, NJ and our trailer took us for a spin on the highway. We had a great gig last night and we were happy to finally get into the groove of things, unfortunately everything has come to a cold and dreadful stop. I was driving the van on our way to New Jersey when we suddenly skid across the road and nearly hit a wall. Unfortunately our fucking trailer flipped over and broke off the hinge!
"As I was driving down the road the weather kept getting worse and worse. It was very difficult to see outside of our windows and the road was becoming one big sheet of ice. I could see the light from my headlights reflect off the pavement. I slowed down because I was afraid we would hydroplane. I was going about 40- 45 mph about two hours from the venue, listening to the song 'Chase The Wind' by our friends band Holy Grail on my headphones, when suddenly I realized that our trailer was on a massive hydroplane completely adjacent to us. I kind of freaked out because I was afraid it would smash into the back of the van where Juan [Juarez, band guitarist] was sleeping. I laid off the gas and as soon as I did the trailer pulled the van and caused me to loose complete control. All I could say was 'OH FUUUUCK!' I managed to narrowly miss the center divider and a few cars before we skid completely across the highway and almost hit the wall on the other side. We came to a stop about 3 feet from the wall!
"It was a surreal experience to say the least. Something about listening to our buddy Luna (from Holy Grail) singing while we almost lost our lives just didn’t seem right. At least that is not how I would’ve expected to go. Everything happened so fast and my actions seemed automatic as if my instincts just kicked in and I did whatever it is I did behind the wheel without thinking about it. I'm not superstitious but its kind of ironic that Mauro was listening to 'Dying Season' by Heathen and the exit off the highway we took after all was said and done was named Moosic. Its like we exited music and in a way we did, for the night at least. More...
