Finnish progressive death metal super group Barren Earth has checked in with the following report from the band's current North American tour:
"In Texas, the musical reference of the day was the Jimmie Rodgers song, T For Texas (probably better known as the version by Lynyrd Skynyrd). And as it was freezing cold, I decided to have just that, a T. Preferably Twining’s Earl Grey or English Breakfast. But it was just then that the clock hit noon, and despite the snow, the weather started getting really warm. By the time we reached Ft. Worth, the temperature was reasonably high, and our winter coats could be abandoned, at least for the time being.
"It really is a magnificent PR stunt Mother Nature has supported this tour with. Surely it cannot be a coincidence that the route of the Finnish Metal Tour 2 matches quite closely that of the recent meteorological phenomenon referred to here as the ‘Arctic Blast’. But as with any publicity stunt, there are limits, and what with the cancelled gigs, I think old Mother Earth might have been pushing it a tad too far. But Ft. Worth was great. The gig was the best of the tour so far, as this time certain members of the audience were there specifically to see us, some of them even having driven for hours to get there.
"This showed in the overall vibe of the gig, and ‘twas but a pleasure. Earlier in the day, Oppu decided he needed to hang his bed sheets on a clothesline. As there actually weren’t any clotheslines available, a Dodge pick-up truck parked nearby had to do. Neatly spreading the sheets over the truck’s hood, they were bound to get the airing they demanded. But this was not quite to happen. Upon returning to the site later on, the pick-up truck was still there, but the sheets weren’t. Baffled and bemused, he went inside the tour bus, only to find a lady wearing a coat which looked suspiciously the same as Oppu’s blanket. Allegations were made that this lady had taken Oppu’s sheets to meet her own sartorial tastes. But after a while it came clear, that this was not so. The jacket indeed was her own, and would remain so in the future, too. The mystery of the missing bed sheets was finally resolved, when they were eventually found in a garbage bin close by, having presumably been taken there by the owner of the truck. More...

Nowadays, the term "Guitar Hero" has become synonymous with a rhythm based video game, but prior to this, the term was used as a tag of respect to those who breathed, ate and lived for their instrument, and displayed a skill and passion for the six stringed axe that elevated them to the status of kings to their listeners. These guitar heroes created music that resonated within the very souls of their fans and bore riffs that would become as memorable to rockers as their child's first word or their wedding day. Regardless of how the term is thrown around now, Gary Moore is, was and forever shall be, a true guitar hero.
Gary Moore was born in the Northern Irish capital of Belfast on April 4th 1952 and begun his foray into music at the age of eight, using an old acoustic guitar. He showed dedication to the guitar even in his youth, when at the age of fourteen, he learned how to play his first "proper" guitar right handed, despite being a southpaw. His influences were similar to many young musicians of the time; The Beatles, Elvis Presley, but his approach to his instrument was changed forever when he witnessed a Jimi Hendrix concert. After attending the show, his style morphed into the blues rock style for which he would become most well known.
At the age of sixteen, Moore moved to Dublin to join the band Skid Row, which also featured future Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott. With Skid Row, Moore recorded two studio albums, "Skid" and "34 Hours," before setting out on his own and releasing his debut studio album, "Grinding Stone" in 1973. The album is not seen by some as a Gary Moore album, as it is attributed to "The Gary Moore Band" but nevertheless brought the young guitarist to the attention of many contemporaries. The following year, Moore reunited with Lynott to record the song, "Still Loving You" for the Thin Lizzy album, "Night Life." This would not be his only tenure with the band however, as he also worked with the group on their album, "Black Rose: A Rock Legend," regarded by many fans to be one of the best Thin Lizzy albums in their catalogue. He also appeared with the band in the music videos for the songs, "Do Anything You Want To" and "Waiting For An Alibi."
In 1979, the same year Thin Lizzy released, "Black Rose," Moore once again began to compose solo material, culminating in the album, "Back On The Streets," which fetured Phil Lynott appearing on and co-writing several tracks and an album cover depicting Moore leaving the infamous Wormwood Scrubs Prison in West London. The album featured the song, "Parisiene Walkways," one of his best known compisitions and following the record's release, Moore continued to release solo albums regularly, experimenting in many forms of music including blues, rock, jazz, heavy metal and country music. He still found the time to contribute to other artists work though, including an appearance on the Charity single "Let It Be," which was billed as Ferry Aid and raised money for the survivors of the MS Herald of Free Enterprise disaster, which was considered one of the worst maritime catastrophes since the Titanic sunk.
With a discography spanning twenty studio albums and numerous live and compilation records and a life rooted in music for more than five decades, Gary Moore will always be remembered as one of the true devotees to music. His style has influenced countless guitar players worldwide, including Zakk Wylde, Joe Bonamassa, Randy Rhoads, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Vivian Campbell of Def Leppard and Tygers Of Pan Tang guitarist John Sykes, who himself would become a large part of Thin Lizzy history. It's a testament to not only Gary Moore the guitarist, but Gary Moore tha man, that in the short time that his death was announced, tributes, memories and praise have poured out from fans and fellow musicians alike, none of whom seem to have a bad word to say about him.
He left us too soon, and we've Still Got The Blues.
Gary Moore. 1952 - 2011

Each week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. Some time ago, I offered some suggestions on bands to check out in the Chinese metal scene. Well, China is a big and indescribably populous country, so it should be self evident that the nation has a few more hidden gems interspersed amongst its many teeming megalopolises. Let's kick off the Chinese New Year with three more Chinese metal bands worth a listen:
Brutal death metal in the Middle Kingdom? Believe it. Renchei, which translates to “human pig,” is named after an unspeakably cruel and unusual punishment invented by none other than Empress Lu Zhi, according to historical texts. When one of the royal consorts displeased her, the empress forced poison down her throat, cut off her hands and feet, scooped her eyeballs out of their sockets, cut out her tongue and, as a final humiliation, forced the debilitated woman to live in a toilet as a human pig, languishing in other peoples' filth until her death. That pretty much sums up Renchei's sound—brutal and unforgiving. Taking cues from the likes of Devourment, Dying Fetus, Skinless, and American brutal death metal in general, Renchei offers up a Chinese take on the western technical, guttural, slamming sound. Operating out of Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, the band released a six song EP in 2010, “Relic of Disobedience,” featuring five originals and a Disgorge (U.S.) cover. Renchei is currently signed to BrutalReign Productions, a Chinese death metal label established in Xuzhou in 2009 that has begun to acquire acts in China and as far abroad as the U.S.
Through line-up issues and changes in sonic direction, Abigail Williams has come out stronger than ever on their second album “In The Absence Of Light.” While the band has its fair share of critics, Abigail Williams also has a loyal fan base that has followed the group from a blackened deathcore sound to symphonic black metal and to epic black metal in the style of Immortal and Bathory.
With a consistent line-up for the first time in the band's career, and a big U.S. tour coming up with Rotting Christ and Melechesh in March, things are looking bright for Abigail Williams' future. I recently had the chance to talk to vocalist/guitarist Ken Sorceron about the new album, his issues with “In The Shadow Of A Thousand Suns,” the reason for a different sound on every album, and working with Aborted. "He was too young to go, those Lizzy recordings with Moore were as good as it gets. His solo records were rocking."
Former Ozzy Osbourne, Rainbow and Uriah Heep bassist Bob Daisley commented: "It is with great sadness that I acknowledge Gary Moore in this way. His passing has come as a sad and terrible shock and I have difficulty believing that he’s gone. I have many fond memories of our years together, both in the workplace of music and as friends. I have love and respect for Gary as a musician and as a person, he was one of the greatest. Farewell and rest in peace Gary my friend." More...
Russian heavy/progressive metallers MAVRIN are working on new material. The newest song is written by vocalist Artemij Styrov. Artemij Styrov comment: “It may sound funny, but I’ve ‘got’ the main riff and rhythmic line of song in shower. I just ran out to my computer – to write it down. Later vocal line came out. I’ve brought it to rehearse and everyone liked how it sounds. So the one thing is left to do – compose lyrics.”
