Varg Vikernes of Burzum is easily among the most infamous names in metal, being an icon who is both respected for his musical achievements and frequently reviled for his criminal history and personal beliefs. The upcoming Burzum disc "Fallen" (reviewed here) will be Varg's second full-length album since being released from prison.
As the release of "Fallen" draws near, Varg answered a series of questions for Metalunderground about the album and how it differs from the previous entry "Belus." Read on to see his thoughts on letting fans interpret the music freely, mixing metal albums like classical music, and find out what Varg thinks about bands like Bathory and Paradise Lost. More...
Experimental noise duo OvO recently inked a deal with Supernatural Cat Records. The band's upcoming sixth album "Cor Cordium" will see release on April 18th, 2011.
To give the public a first taste of the release, UK-based Rock-A-Rolla Magazine is hosting a stream of "Marie," the third track from "Cor Cordium." You can listen to the song in the player below.
Century Media Records has signed a record deal with Israel based old school death metal band Sonne Adam, who will unleash the debut album “Transformation” on April 4th, 2011 in Europe.
Jens Prueter (Head Of A&R, Century Media Records Europe) commented: "Back in 1991, Century Media Records released the groundbreaking debut albums by Asphyx, Grave, Morgoth and Unleashed as well as the second album of Tiamat. It was the year death metal changed the metal world and thousands of bands were founded in garages around the world. 20 years later we are proud to sign a young band from Tel Aviv, Israel that knows the meaning of death unfortunately better than most of us. Sonne Adam mix the old doom/death of early Paradise Lost and technical insanity of early Morbid Angel with a fresh passion and raw energy that reminds me of the hunger and dedication I heard in the aforementioned debut albums 20 years ago, without sounding retro. Welcome to a new chapter of Century Media death metal!"
Sonne Adam instrumentalist Davidov states: “We didn't imagine that we will receive so much attention when we wrote the album a year and a half ago, when the 'Armed With Hammers' EP wasn't even released yet. Hell, we didn't even know back than how strong the old school death metal scene will be again. We never were 'label hunters' so it was a big surprise. Actually, being from Israel and signing to a big label is more crucial than you think as we are very isolated from our crowd. No matter what, our heart is in the underground. Always was and always will be! If someone thinks that we are selling out he can go f**k himself. We are very pleased with signing with Century Media.”
DevilDriver is set to release the new album "Beast" tomorrow, February 22nd, 2011 through Roadrunner Records. In celebration of the release, the band is now streaming the entire album online through the DevilDriver MySpace profile.

1. Dead To Rights
2. Bring The Fight (To The Floor)
5. Talons Out (Teeth Sharpened)
6. You Make Me Sick
9. The Blame Game
10. Black Soul Choir (16 HORSEPOWER cover)
11. Crowns Of Creation
12. Lend Myself To The Night
Basick Records has issued the following announcement about re-signing U.K. act The Arusha Accord:
"Basick Records is extremely pleased to announce the re-signing of one the UK's most forward thinking technical metal bands, The Arusha Accord! The deal will see a worldwide re-release of the bands debut album 'The Echo Verses' as a 2-disc digipack collectors edition on April 18th 2011, which will be bundled with the bands original debut 'Nightmares Of The Ocean' EP, along with exclusive videos, photos and multimedia content, as well as much sought after guitar/bass and drum tabs to each of the bands songs. The band is also currently working hard at writing for the follow up record, also due to be released with Basick in the not-so-distant future."
Paul Green, vocalist with the band comments: "We're absolutely stoked to be announcing our re-signing with Basick! Its great to be back home where it all started for us, the collective of bands & label ethic here is truly rare and one we're proud to be part of again!
"We're equally as ecstatic about this release, a celebration of coming home and also a milestone that will see us move on from TEV. Everyone's been working their absolute tits off getting the tabs, content, artwork & website ready for this and it feels great to now let you in on what we've been doing. It's also great to be getting TEV & NOTO into stores across the world, something that really had been missing for us and of course, you guys! With all the tabs for TEV now there for you guys, let's see how you get on trying to learn those bastards ;)
"This release truly means the end to a chapter for the band... We've learnt a hell of a lot about our sound and what we want from music over these past 2 years... As you know we're working on a new record; the guys have been throwing stuff back and forth to each other and I can assure you, it's incredible! We have always aimed to push the boundaries with our sound, and the new material is even more beautiful and as disgusting as anything we have written to date. I think its too early for us to give anything away but we are dipping back into our roots and also looking at new areas for inspiration... Lets hope we can finish this as well as we've started!"

In honor of black metal history month, Metalunderground.com has been looking back at bands that influenced the genre as well as some of the biggest names in the style, most recently examining famous Norwegian act Emperor in the "Sunday Old School" column.
Each week with Unearthing the Metal Underground, we look at a handful of quality bands championing the underground and carrying metal forward. This week we'll spotlight three one-man black metal bands that fans of the genre may not have had the chance to hear yet. You can also check out our previous look at solo black metal bands here, as well as solo musicians from a variety of genres at this location.
Italy's Hiems is a band worth watching for black metal fanatics who want occasional respite from the non-stop frozen atompshere and rasping screams. Although both of those elements are found throughout solo artist Algol's music, the songs also feature a black 'n roll vibe and even dip into Opeth style prog metal. A sample from the "Worship or Die" album (reviewed here) can be found in the clip below.
Finland's Corpset has inked a deal with Violent Journey Records. The band is set to release the new album "Ruins" through Violent Journey Records on April 27th, 2011. You can listen to the new song "Moment of Clarity" at this location.

Becoming the Archetype is set to release the new album "Celestial Completion " on March 29th through Solid State Records. Becoming the Archetype has now posted a blog on the Solid State Records website announcing the band is shooting a music video and lining up a record release show:
"Instead of rambling on about how great we are and how our new album is gonna melt your face and how you should buy it on March 29 (it’s called Celestial Completion, by the way), I think you’d probably appreciate if I just told you what is currently going on in the life of the Archetype Boys.
"We in Becoming The Archetype are pretty cool dudes. Jason (Papa J) works at JC Penney fitting men for suits. Duck used to work at Starbucks, but he’s now working at a way better company that involves computers. It’s top secret, so that’s all I can tell you. Daniel spends all his time playing guitar and getting tattoos, so he doesn’t have time for work. And I spend all my time handling band stuff like booking, managing, writing, practicing piano and guitar and singing, emailing people and doing interviews. See? I told you we were cool.
"A typical day in the life of BTA on the road is to listen to Weird Al in the van, then practice singing harmonies together. Usually we pick a song we all know the words to then pick harmonies for each of us to sing. It’s difficult, but it’s fun if you’re nerdy enough to appreciate it.
"Right now we’ve been focused on other stuff like taking photos, shooting a music video, doing interviews and arguing over which songs to play at our CD release shows. You see, if we play too many new songs, you guys are gonna kill us for not playing your favorite oldie. But if we play too much old stuff, we can’t cram our new songs down your throat. See what a conundrum we’re in? For those of you who aren’t astute in nerdology, ‘conundrum’ means ‘really, really difficult situation that you can’t figure out, even if you’re Count Seth.’ More...

We support his decision, remain the best of friends and could never thank him enough for his dedicated service to the band. Thus, we begin the search for a new bassist with whom we can continue the story of Steelwing, starting with our second album and the tours to follow it. If you are:

* A skilled bass player with plenty of studio and live experience
* Devoted to the sounds and looks of 80's heavy metal
* Living in the Stockholm/Nyköping area, willing to relocate to it or otherwise capable of rehearsing 1-3 times a week
* Humble, in it for the music and prepared for hard work and life on the road

Finland's Barren Earth has checked in with the following update from the road on the band's current U.S. tour:
"The replacement bus seemed to be adequate enough. It was clean and smelled quite nice, which could not be said of the old one: 2 weeks on the road had taken its toll, and the sights and smells were not always pleasant anymore. Indeed, although us passengers have often complained about the buses, I am quite sure that the bus vehicles themselves, were they able to complain, would probably file a complaint or two towards us travelers, because there has been the occasional abuse, and negligence of common hygienic matters on our behalf. But since bus vehicles can not complain, what do we care!
"On Monday morning we were yet again at a standstill, this time somewhere in Montana. With luck, we would just have enough time to make it across the border and up to Calgary. Too tired to worry about buses and schedules anymore, it was nice to just observe the beautiful scenery while driving through the Rocky Mountains. Joe Walsh got it right: the Rocky Mountain Way really is ‘better than the way we had…’
"We finally reached the Canadian border. At Border Control the Customs Officer looked at my passport, and asked all kinds of questions, amongst them this one: ‘So do you play country music or hiphop, or are you a real musician?’ I said: ‘No country or hiphop for me, sir!’ He opened a drawer, reached for a delicate little pin with the Canadian flag, handed it over to me, and said: ‘Welcome to Canada!’ More...
