Danish black metal band Horned Almighty have just released their fourth full-length and much-anticipated Candlelight Records debut, "Necro Spirituals," a blasphemous cacophony that embraces the raw side of the genre's earliest purveyors.
Originally formed in 2002 as a side project, the band deliver an unflinching blitz of pure black metal, with pummeling drums, skull shattering bass, frantic riffage and evil vocals of death, destruction and hell on earth. Shunning keyboards, strings or any hint of melody, they're a throwback that stands in stark contrast to the incredibly intricate, massive productions flowing from the Scandinavian and European symphonic metal scene.
Vocalist S took a few minutes to chat with Metalunderground this week about the new album, tour, hooking up with Candlelight and their disdain for organized religion. Here's what transpired: More...
You can add another chapter to Massachusetts' notoriously incestuous metal and hardcore scene as members of Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage have united to form a new side project called Death Ray Vision.
The group reunites Shadows Fall vocalist Brian Fair with Overcast mates, Mike D'Antonio, who plays bass for Killswitch, and guitarist Pete Cortese, who also played briefly in KsE. Cortese also played in Seemless with Jesse Leach, who was the original KsE vocalist and is now on tour with Times of Grace with KsE guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz.
Still with us? Good.
Death Ray Vision, which is planning to record a four-song demo and is lining up some northeastern U.S. shows, also includes former Cannae drummer Colin Conway and guitarist Zack Wells, who runs Born of Fire, a Boston-based indie label that hosts the city's best weekly metal night.
Fair announced the formation of the band on his Facebook page and promised the band will be "bringing a sound based on our old school influences (Cro-Mags, Integrity, Leeway, Ringworm, etc.)"
As previously reported, Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman will be unable to tour with the band, on a number of tour dates this year as a result of an arm infection. Taking his place on the tour will be Exodus guitarist Gary Holt, who had this to say regarding the guest position:
"How can I put into words how excited I am to have been asked to play with Slayer? Hard to describe for sure. Legendary band, check. Old friends since the birth of thrash metal. Check. Get to play ‘Angel Of Death’ live, priceless! I'll do my best to live up to the standard they've set for so many years, while we all wish Jeff a speedy return to health and his rightful place in Slayer."
The Devin Townsend Project has posted another video update online documenting the recording of the new album, "Deconstruction." You can check it out below. "Deconstruction" will be one of two new albums that the Devin Townsend Project will release in June, along with a record entitled, "Ghost."

Brooklyn based act Liturgy is currently streaming the track "High Gold" through Decibel Magazine's Deciblog. The track, which appears on the "Aesthethica" album, can be heard at this location. Decibel Magazine also commented on the song:
"Brooklynites Liturgy have taken black metal’s primal scream literally and applied it to an experimental framework. Actually, from the sounds of Aesthethica lead-off track 'High Gold,' it’s the other way ’round.
"Apart from the opening and ending sonic bookends, 'High Gold' is a furious, repetitious, and dissonant salvo carved out the same mindset that has carried fellow New Yorkers Krallice to acclaimed heights. Ultimately, Liturgy’s 'High Gold' rules."

Italian black metal act Ogen has announced the band's debut EP "Black Metal Unbound" will be released in the Spring of 2011 through Kolony Records. The CD is currently being recorded at Elfo Studio in Italy with producer Daniele Mandelli (Forgotten Tomb, Dark Horizon). It also features a guest appearance by Be'lakor lead singer George Kosmas on the song "Shattered Earth Volcano."
The band also commented on it's history and the new album:
"Ogen was formed in 2010 as a solo project of mastermind Hartagga who had the desire to explore the field of extreme metal, pushing his lifelong musical quest further. The path to follow was clear since the beginning: from the early stages of the project, Ogen was meant to contribute its view and compositions to the ever-changing genre of black metal. With this in mind, the songwriting process started to flow easily, revealing Ogen's ability to forge tunes made of both black metal edges and episodes of not-so-obvious harmonic tapestry. An EP was born, set to firstly declare Ogen's will to provide the world of metal with an enchantingly estranging extreme metal outfit, which never lacks perspective and whose wall of sound, easily more relevant than speed for speed's sake, will take listeners on a trip to the deep heart of forgotten landscapes."
The "Black Metal Unbound" track listing is as follows:
1. Shattered Earth volcano
2. Black tusk retaliation
3. Crest of the forgotten
4. As a leaden sun shineth upon
5. A steep slope to desolation
German thrash metal veterans Destruction have announced that Destroyer 666 will be unable to participate in the band's scheduled tour of North America this April, because guitarist and vocalist K.K. Warslut will be undergoing surgery on a torn ACL. Speaking on the tour's lineup, Destruction front man Schmier stated:
"Destruction wishes Keith a safe and quick recovery! In the meantime, we are really happy to announce their old friends Heathen as a replacement for Deströyer 666! These Bay Area thrashers are one of my favorite thrash bands of all time and we will be sharing the European stages with them in some weeks on the Killfest tour. It's fantastic to have an opportunity to tour with old friends on both sides of the globe! German and Bay Area thrash together on tour - how much more kick-ass can it get?! I can't wait to hit the road again now, hope to see you all out there!"

His ability to play our tunes tight within no-time, while withstanding a kind of humor that only few can endure, proved that he’s up for the game!
"Between now and the previous blog we did a bunch of cool shows. The most notable gig was definitely the Sodom Metalnight gig, our first show with Robin and an awesome party! Lots of kudos go out to Jeremy (Burial Earth) and Matthijs (Limburg was awesome dude) who helped us out on the bass during our search.
"Regarding the further course of events; we are now ready to go full steam ahead with new material. As you can see some brand new shows have been added to our events, but besides these shows we are planning to focus more on writing new stuff. This means that we will not be looking actively for new shows in the near future. Beside our busy lives which exists of consuming too much alcohol, graduating and achieving diploma’s we hope to get creative soon and throw y’all some fucking metal."

August Burns Red is currently in the studio with Jason Suecof, recording the follow-up to 2009's "Constellations." The band has now checked in with Alt Press to discuss the recording process. An excerpt from the Alt Press article follows:
“We know sonically he’s going to give us the record that we want, and while he is a bit of a zany, crazy guy—like, all over the place, a little A.D.D.—we hit a stride with him in the last couple weeks of doing our last record,” Guitarist JB Brubaker says. “We became good friends with him and he figured us out; we figured him out. And it just made sense for us to do it with him again.”
The still-untitled album will have more than 10 songs that lyrically run the gamut. Drummer Matt Greiner wrote a song about how the band’s hometown of Manheim, Pennsylvania, came together after a recent car accident involving four high school students. Vocalist Jake Luhrs’ contributions, meanwhile, tend toward “things that have been frustrating him in his life—whether it be family things or spiritual things,” Brubaker says. “Some of the stuff he’s written, it comes off pretty angry.”
Putting August Burns Red’s new music into words isn’t quite as easy. On the one hand, Brubaker says that it’s “much more melodic” than 2007’s Messengers and it’s “definitely coming out heavier” than Constellations. Still, he observes that it’s also maintaining the latter album’s “dynamic elements… such as clean sections and guitar solos and stuff.”

The show will take place at Saint Michaels Hall in Lynn, MA on February 19th. The band commented on the gig by saying:
"In an effort to keep the focus on recording our new album and to show everyone that we are still indeed friends with our former drummer Derek Kerswill and that our split was solely because of 'creative differences,' we have decided that he is the best fit to play drums for us at Roverfest this Saturday night.
"Both the band and Derek agree that this was the best way to end our chapter together while also paying tribute to our fallen friend and former bassist Chris 'Rover' Rybicki. So if you are attending the show on Saturday at St. Michaels Hall in Lynn, you will get a chance to see our last gig with Kerswill."

After everything that happened last year we all agreed that we just can't let our fans down again. Jeff is totally on board with this decision, so we will tour as planned. At this point, we can't pinpoint exactly what day he'll be back, but he'll be back as soon as he possibly can. And we can't wait for Jeff to get better and get his ass back on the road."
Hanneman underwent emergency surgery on his right arm late last month after contracting a serious infection. He is now recuperating at home and is expected to make a full recovery. He will return to the Slayer line-up as soon as he has fully recovered.

Polish metal act Neuronia has posted the following update online:
"Of course it's a difficult situation for the band when the whole rhythm section leaves. However, we're very happy that the split wasn't acrimonious, there was no bad blood and we're all still friends. We're very lucky — we've found two great musicians in no time, and they have seamlessly found their place in the lineup. We're even more motivated now — we feel a lot of newly-found energy."
Former bass player Dominik Beska, who participated in the recording of the band's two studio albums, left the band due to time constraints. Michal Pasternak, the band's drummer, also left to be able to focus fully on his main band, Relikt, and thrash-metal outfit War-Saw.
Into Eternity drummer Steve Bolognese has posted the following update online:
"It's a tremendous honor to be invited back to teach at Berklee College Of Music for the spring semester. I always have a great time at the school. There are so many aspiring students getting their start in the field, and it's really amazing to be there to help them out and share any knowledge that I have to better prepare them for this ever-changing industry. Not to mention the world-class faculty that the percussion department has. It's just a real heavy scene. There are some heavy cats walking around those hallways, what I like to call 'total monsters.'
"Mike Mangini left at the end of last semester, so although those are some extremely huge shoes to fill, things are going really well. Mike always helps me out, to make sure I know what's going on before I start. So I'm really excited for the semester.
"After this I will be back on the road this summer playing with Baptized In Blood and will continue to work on the new Into Eternity material as well, which is almost in the final writing stage. It's going to be what I like to call 'epically triumphant.' I know our fans will love the new material."
