German metalcore act Caliban has issued the following update;
"It’s time for some exciting news: we’re heading towards the studio in a week’s time to record cover songs! Our friend and producer Benny Richter will be keeping an eye on us again and we’re hyper excited about how the results are going to sound like.
"We’re not revealing the secret of which songs we will be covering exactly, (yet!), but if you visited our last European Winter Tour you might have catched us performing Rammstein‘s 'Sonne,' which will be one of the 10 songs we are recording. Talking about the other 9 songs, we chose from the very best classics and milestones of our youth, but we will also surprise you with some more current cover songs. And we promise, we’re not just sticking to one genre!
"Of course we want to keep you as close as possible to the production process and there are going to be pictures and even a special Caliban TV episode recorded at the studio.
"If you’re wondering when this jewel will be available to you, we will have to ask you to practice patience until April/May. We assure you, it’s worth waiting [for]"
Guns N Roses frontman Axl Rose has posted the following statement online, denouncing rumors of a Guns N Roses North American tour;
"Contrary to anyone's claims, there are no concrete plans nor were there ever for a tour, a relaunch or sponsors (n' certainly not to replace anyone in the band) beyond a collection of random ideas thrown out by various individuals [without] any real foundation or negotiations in place other than our prior involvements (which wouldn't take a rocket scientist to put together). And [for] the record, [manager] Doc McGhee is no longer involved [with] either myself or GN'R."

Abattoir and Anger As Art vocalist Steve Gaines has posted the following statement regarding the death of legendary guitarist Gary Moore:
"Super Bowl Sunday, and I find this news.... simply terrible. This hits me as hard as Ronnie Dio's passing.
"About ten years ago, I was starting to make the jump from bass to guitar... and was lacking some inspiration. While working on some Pagan War Machine recordings, I was shown some live video of Gary Moore, and quite simply it changed my life. Instead of the shreddy, arpeggio swepping whammy bar guys that dominate the thrash scene, here was a guy who played bluesy hard rock — who could hold a note for what seemed like forever ('Parisienne Walkways') that would bring tears to your eyes. From there I discovered his whole career... blues, prog, whatever, he did it better than most.
"It is not a stretch to say that if not for Gary Moore, that first Anger As Art album never would have been done. Unashamedly I admit to ripping off his technique for that whole record.
"Gary, I hope Phil [Lynott] was there to greet you. You guys have some time now... Go find Cozy [Powell], and we expect that you have a few records worth of material for us by the time we join you.
"Rest in peace, Gazza!"

As reported earlier today, blues rock legend and former Thin Lizzy guitarist Gary Moore passed away this morning while on holiday in Spain. Tributes have already begun to pour in from fans and peers, including his former Thin Lizzy bandmate Scott Gorham, who stated:
"He was a superb player and a dedicated musician. Playing with Gary during the Black Rose era was a great experience, he was a great player and a great guy. I will miss him."
Also paying tribute was Black Sabbath bass player Terry "Geezer" Butler, who said: "I was very saddened to hear of the passing of one of the greatest guitarists of all time- Gary Moore. His Still Got The Blues album was one of the great albums, certainly one of my favourites. His way of playing can not be learned- it comes from the soul. R.I.P Gary."
Nightwish singer Annette Olzon added: “A super guitarist and for me, a man who has given me wonderful songs to listen to and dance my first slow dances to, has been found dead early this morning in Spain.
He was so young still, just 58 years old and it´s just a big loss for music. Nightwish has recorded one of his songs as a cover – ‘Over The Hills And Far Away’ - a great song he made. I hope you may rest in peace, Gary, and thanks for all the songs I just love!”
Mikael Åkerfeldt, the frontman of Swedish progressive metal favourites Opeth, has commented on the passing of blues rock legend and former Thin Lizzy guitarist, Gary Moore, which was announced earlier today. His statement reads as follows:
"We are devastated to hear about the passing of Gary Moore. Both myself and Fredrik (Åkesson; guitar) are massive fans of his, and we've been listening to his music since we're kids. He was such a integral part of our musical upbringing, so it's with great sadness we have to try and accept these horrible news. One of the very best hard rock lead guitar players EVER! We love you Gary, rest in peace."
British doom/stoner metal legends Cathedral has announced that they will be calling it a day after a twenty one year long career. The band will make their exit from the live arena at the end of this year and plan to record one final studio album to be released in 2012.
According to vocalist Lee Dorrian: "It's simply time for us to bow out. Twenty-one years is a very long time and it's almost a miracle that we managed to come this far! We've had a great time during Cathedral's existence and it has literally been our life. It's just time to move on and leave our recorded legacy to linger.
"Our latest album The Guessing Game is exactly where we wanted to be after all this time. Staying in one place, being repetitive and predictable is something we wanted to avoid right from the off. More...

Russian symphonic black metal act Arcane Grail has checked in with the following report of the band's recent Baltic tour:
"The tour has passed with a heap of adventures, certainly, intoxication, fails, etc. In the small Estonian cities of Johvi and Rakvere we have passed first two concerts because of problems with visas. Then having received the visas personally from the consul of Estonia as a cultural exchange between the countries, we jerked on the bus Moscow-Riga-Tallin, where went for 17 hours.
"At night we passed the Russian-Latvian border where have forced to torture on a frost, as well as carry our things, to maintain heavy sights of frontier guards and to answer on their interesting questions. It is literally through 100 meters already on the Latvian-Russian border we have not asked, things did not looked, also no needed to pull out from the bus, simply having scanned all bus. The first concert was already in Tallin. There were under 400 persons, a huge club. More...
Front man Accuser of Norwegian black metal act Revelation's Hammer has issued the following announcement about an upcoming album:
"Greetings! By tonight, we have been online with two of our songs for about two months. As you sure know by now, we are a quite new black metal act from the east of Norway. It’s very hard to get yourself a name in this genre, and especially here in Scandinavia. This is because there are so many bands out there that play black metal nowadays. I still surely hope some of you find our music somewhat special and enjoys our dark path.
"The end is soon near, and so is the completion of our coming album. I have to admit that I didn't feel completely satisfied with the first (or second!) mix down of our record, so the final process has therefore been a little delayed. The final mixing will take place sometime around March and it will then be sent directly to Sweden for a second mastering session. The album is going to last around forty five minutes and the track list will look like this:
Buried as Filth
The Crown of Malice
"I'm also elated to announce that the full artwork for the album is finally finished. It's designed by Portuguese designer Ricardo Fernandes and looks totally amazing. You have to see it for yourself! I will post it when the time is ready, so stay updated through our site! By the way, it's Fernandes' companion Marcelo Rodrigues that is responsible for designing the new logo of R.H. Credits to him! That’s all for now! Stay true to yourself!"

"Furthermore the album will feature the first recordings of new vocalist Shady Blue (better known as Athera from Susperia) who replaced Eddie Guz in 2009.
"The third Chrome Division release was recorded at Marius Strand Studio, Oslo and is set to be unleashed in the first half of 2011."
As many people are aware, February is Black History Month in the United States of America. Always one to respect cultures and take part in something, we here at MetalUnderground.com are dedicating this month to the history of Black Metal. We will be looking at some of the biggest names in the genre, those who helped to shape it and some of the promising younger black metal bands in the underground.
While American thrash metal has it’s Big Four, with constant debate among fans as to who belongs there and who should be added to expand the number, German thrash metal has always had their Three Kings, who’s reign will never be challenged. We’ve already looked at Destruction, so this week we’ll be examining Sodom, who along with Destruction, proved to be a major influence on black metal as it is known today. The band was formed in 1981 by Tom “Angelripper” Such as an attempt to escape from his job as a coal miner and took much of their inspiration from New Wave Of British Heavy Metal bands such as Venom, Tank and Saxon. After going through a few members, they eventually signed to SPV/Steamhammer Records and released their debut EP, “In The Sign Of Evil,” with a full length album, “Obsessed By Cruelty” following shortly afterwards. The album was widely panned by critics, dismissing the group as a second rate Venom and criticising their occult themed lyrics. More...
