Jason W. Walton Streams "Yakshi"

"Mara" is the eclectic solo seven-inch from Agalloch bassist/Self Spiller master draftsman Jason W. Walton. Composed via field recordings from various places he would visit, Walton captured the din of humanity on the downtown Portland streets, the rush of ocean waves in Southern California, and the mysteriously comforting monologues emanating from an AM radio.

Walton thematically composed these songs around his struggle with sleep paralysis - a phenomenon in which a person, either falling asleep or awakening, temporarily experiences an inability to move, speak, and react.

Following the stream of "Alp," today the song "Yakshi" comes online for communal discovery with Walton noting:

"'Yakshi' is the second and final track of 'Mara' and deals with the terror and helplessness one experiences when in the throes of sleep paralysis. In this state your mind is awake yet your body is paralyzed. Your cries of desperation travel no further than your own head and are obscured by the buzzing waves of darkness. 'Yakishi' encapsulates this experience and gives me surges of anxiety each time I listen." More...

Pit Stories: The Cheeseburger Break Down

It's that time of the week - today comes a new Pit Story from vocalist Brittney Slayes of Unleash The Archers. In this week's tale, Slayes heads back into the pit after a long hiatus to down cold cheeseburgers and potentially ruffied beer at a Zimmer's Hole show...

So I suppose we can begin with the fact that I do not usually go into mosh pits at all; I used to when I was young but got an elbow to the face one night and it just never felt the same after that… Regardless, I am more of a stand at the back and headbang type, unless the band is one of my faves and I’ve had a few too many, then I’ll usually stand at the front and headbang hahaha.

There is a band here in Vancouver called Zimmer’s Hole that is just the raddest most hilarious metal ever, if you’ve never listened to them then I strongly recommend you get your hands on "When You Were Shouting At The Devil;" Gene Hoglan on drums, Chris ‘The Heathen’ Valagao on vocals, seriously just some killer metal, really great for driving in traffic hahaha. Needless to say I was into them pretty hard back in 2009 and when they finally came to Victoria to play a show I was beyond stoked.

I did my darndest to be my usual hide in the back self, but these guys just get you so riled up! The Heathen dresses up like the devil (full red body paint) in assless chaps and a blacksmith’s apron (very Hephaestus) and has awesome props and a voice straight outta the depths of hell. So the beers go back way too easy and next thing I know my favorite song ‘Fista Corpse’ is on and I just can’t help myself. I’m back in the pit like a 15 year old, singing way too loud and fisting the plastic skeleton corpse thing that had been thrown into the pit.

They also have this great thing called a ‘cheeseburger breakdown’ where The Heathen throws McDonald’s cheeseburgers into the audience and you just shouldn’t eat that stuff but here I was sharing a cold cheeseburger probably purchased five hours ago with some random metalhead standing beside me in the pit. Suddenly there’s a beer in my hand to wash the burger down, probably roofied but who cares. The bar we were in was not big, and the area for the mosh pit was probably a third of the floorspace so pretty much the whole bar is in there with me now and it’s sweaty and disgusting and everyone smells like McDonald’s, but it is probably the greatest mosh pit I have ever been in, and thus it was the last because I mean really, how can you top a pit like that?

Unleash The Achers has a new album titled "Time Stands Still" set to drop via Napalm Records on June 26th (EU) and July 10th (North America). Check out a teaser trailer below. More...

Brent Hinds: "I Fucking Hate Heavy Metal"

It would appear Brent Hinds of Mastodon is tired of conducting interviews to promote his band. In a rant with Guitarplayer.com, he reveals he doesn't want Mastodon to be a heavy metal outfit anymore and is no longer excited about anything to do with the band. Excerpts from the interview follows:

I never really liked heavy metal in the first place. I came from Alabama playing country music, surf rock, rockabilly, and stuff like that. I just went through a phase in my 20s where I thought it was rebellious to play heavy metal. And then I met Brann [Dailor, Mastodon drummer] and Bill [Kelliher], and they were really, really, really into heavy metal. And ever since then, I’ve been trying to get Mastodon to not be such a heavy metal band, because I fucking hate heavy metal, and I don’t want to be in a heavy metal band.

It would be nice if magazines and all interviews would just go fall off the face of the earth along with all the cigarette smoke and all the other fucking things I hate in life. I don’t like doing interviews, I don’t read interviews, I don’t need to know how people go about doing things. It frustrates me to do interviews, because I have to talk about things I’ve talked about over and over and over and over again. So, no, there’s nothing that we can talk about that involved Mastodon that I’ll get excited about. After 15 years of doing this every fucking day of my life, the last thing I want to do is talk about doing it.

I’m very passionate about playing guitar—I’m just not the most passionate guy in the world about talking about any of it. Breaking details down and getting micro about what cable I plug into what pedal is, to me, a very unnecessary type of dialogue. I understand you have readers that want to know that stuff, but they’re not going to find out from me.

So what do you think - is he just trolling, is he totally right, or should he suck it up, stop being a whiny ass baby, and realize being a rock star means having to answer the same questions in interviews every album cycle? More...

Black Oil Recruits New Drummer

Cali based groove metal band Black Oil released the "Resist To Exist" album earlier this year, and now the band has announced the recruitment of new drummer Santi Guardiola (DH Peligro, Thorne, Phenagen). Sliptrick Records comments:

"Santiago Guardiola was born in August of 1984 in Cordoba, Argentina, where he began his drumming career with private lessons at the age of 13. Aside from school, he played in several rock cover bands in gigs throughout his hometown.

Voice Of Ruin Parts With Guitarist

Voice Of Ruin has issued the following announcement about parting ways with the band's guitarist:

"After a bit less than 3 years, more than 60 shows, 3 tours, 1 album and 1 EP, our dear guitarist Tony has decided to leave the band. The only reason that prompted him to take his decision is a lack of time to push this project further.

"Tony has a full-time time day job that requires him to be at work 2 week-end per month. Considering the amount of shows we play, he doesn’t have any free weekends left to rest and spend time with his family. Further more, he’s living far away from us and in order to rehearse with us, he has to drive back and forth for more than 3 hours.

"Despite the fact that we will miss his pretty face, we totally understand his decision... those are rough times for Voice of Ruin as we are loosing our 2 guitar players in less than 3 months…but hey that's life!

"We wish Tony all the best with his musical ventures, and be assured that we will stay in contact and maintain this friendship that we've nurtured during the last three years! Be sure to catch us for our last show with him:

27.06.2015 – Usine, Geneva (CH) w/ Dagoba + Benighted
04.07.2015 – Burning Q Festival, Freißenbüttel (DE) w/ Cripper

"Now the good news is that we’re lucky in our misfortune (again). We've already found a great guy to step in Tony's shoes: his name is Morti. He’s an excellent musician and has already a lot of experience in the music scene as he’s playing guitar in a great band called Deus Ex Machina.

"It’s quite exciting to start a new adventure with a new lineup. We can’t wait to start recording our new album and be back on stage in the end of august with fresh material. More information soon!" More...

Dodsferd Announces "Wastes Of Life"

Greek black 'n' roll machine Dodsferd just completed recordings for a tenth full-length to date, "Wastes of Life."

The album will be released later this year by longtime label Moribund Records, and follows the 2013 album "The Parasitic Survival of the Human Race." Mixing and mastering of Dodsferd's "Wastes of Life" will soon be started at the same studio where it was recorded, at D Studio in Athens, Greece, by Michael Karpathiou.

Founding Dodsferd vocalist/guitarist Wrath reports the following: "My new album is one of my most soul-destroying albums. It has nothing to do with religious trends and worships of all kind. It’s an ode to the fall of man and the end of this world. I would like to thank and pay my respect to Michael Karpathiou (acoustic guitars, lead guitars, solos, and extra bass lines) and Chris Tzortzis (contrabass, cello, and violin) for their contributions, with their excellent musical skills, on my new album. They don’t have any relation with the black metal scene, in order to help my band gain any popularity with their contribution. Dodsferd need no one to do that. I don’t follow any kind of trends, and I hate the things that the masses follow and tend to do."

The cover art, created by S.D. from Vision Black and Razorbleed Productions, and track listing are as follows:

1. Wastes of Life
2. Sterile Death, Without Mourning
3. The Dead Have No Speech For
4. To the Fall of Man
5. Graves of Your Creator More...

Spider Rockets Posts "Break" Clip

Everyone has been "Bitten" by the infectious sounds of New Jersey's Spider Rockets, which made the Top Adds on the CMJ Metal charts.

Since the release of "Bitten," the group has toured with Trapt, opened for the likes of Papa Roach, Steel Panther, Saigon Kick, and the track "Going Down" was picked up by the WWE and served as wrestler Charlotte Flair's entrance and victory theme for 2 quarters of 2014.

Now the band is pleased to debut its first ever lyric video for the song "Break." For the concept, the band wanted to make this a fun video to watch and was drawn to powerful and dramatic pulp art from the 1930's through the early 1960s. The video was created and directed by Jason Nappi and Roman Fernandez.

Vaee Solis Releasing "Adversarial Light"

The Portuguese black/doom/sludge warlords from Vaee Solis are set to release their debut album, "Adversarial Light," on August 21st via Signal Rex and Mordgrimm. The following press release was also issued:

"At six staggeringly monolithic tracks, 'Adversarial Light' is aptly titled. Vaee Solis is a band that approximate Morrigan's martial howling, invoking the liberation and illumination of the eternal night, represented in Scandinavian traditions by Ragnarok.

"Its sun is the polar Black Sun that shines brightly like a diamond on Lucifer's forehead: such is the sound of 'Adversarial Light.' Frontwoman Sophia's voice is, therefore, a hoarse and inflamed appeal to all human beings - slaves of the heavy, forgetful slumber to which they've been condemned by post-industrial society - to rise like titans from their nocturnal awakening.

"Lamia's apotropaic shriek, lined by melancholic yet intensely melodic bards provided in the shadows with long and phallic guitars, takes away all fear of the inertia of merely being human. Then, ancient and atavistic memories rise again, stealthily like wolves, coming from the visceral core of ourselves, inflaming our blood and hardening our muscles. Only then the awakening comes, and in the eternal night, bathed in Adversarial Light, Vaee Solis make us remember that we indeed are gods."

Initially released on cassette format through Signal Rex and Degradagem, "Adversarial Light" sold out its initial run of 100 copies within one month of release. Now, Signal Rex and Mordgrimm will be co-releasing the album on limited digipack CD, with a vinyl version to follow by early 2016. The track listing is:

1. Saturn's Storm
2. Adversarial Light
3. Ennoia

It’s off our upcoming album called 'Immortalized,' which will be released on August 21, and is available for pre-order today.

"This album had the arduous task of, in some way, justifying the hiatus; giving the fans something that made it worth our time away from one another. We hope that it succeeds in that task. Thank you for staying with us over the years. Pre-order our new album 'Immortalized' now at this location." More...

Crimson Sun Heads "Towards The Light"

Hailing from Kotka, Finland, female-fronted quintet Crimson Sun plays modern melodic metal with an in-your-face attitude. Crimson Sun has signed with Canadian label Maple Metal Records to release debut album "Towards the Light" on August 3rd worldwide.

As part of the deal, Maple Metal Records will re-release the band’s 2013 EP "The Border," recorded with the same line up as the new album.

"Towards the Light" was tracked last Fall at Deep Noise Studios with Saku Moilanen, and the mastering was done by Jacob Hansen (Epica, Volbeat, Amaranthe, Primal Fear) in Denmark. The album cover art is by Serbian artist Slobicus Doomicus.

Jacob Hansen has shared his comments on the album: “I really enjoyed the songs and the band. To me, this band could easily become ‘the Next Big Thing!' The song structures and overall sound is catchy, as well as being heavy. Fine tuning this combination could mean big business!”

A teaser trailer for the album is available below, and the full track listing is as follows: More...

The Blood Royale Premieres Video Double Feature

The Blood Royale released a double feature video to promote the band's skate deck designed by Born Loco Skate Co.

The video was created in the style of a drive-in theater double feature. While it’s titled as a double feature, the film actually contains three videos for the songs “Let There Be Blood,” “Blackout the Sun” and “Alphabitch.”

Born Loco’s Sonny Malvolio organized, coordinated, produced, and wrote the story lines. Malvolio is also known for his work with D.R.I., Deadhorse and Pasadena Napalm Division, Eagle Claw and Daikaiju. Future artists include Venomous Maximus and Castle. Nathan Daughdrill of Neightmedia meanwhile shot and edited the videos.

The video for “Let There Be Blood” is from an actual photo shoot to create the skate deck and features a bloody Hannah Santibanez. Shawn Smith is the photographer the second video, which is a live performance, and third bonus video took place during drummer John Petri’s birthday. The videos are dedicated to Kenneth Johnson.
