Armstrong Metal Fest Announces Lineup

It’s now less than a month until Armstrong Metalfest flings its doors open to the gathering masses, welcoming in another round of Canada’s long running camping festival.

Co-founder Jesse Valstar comments: “Bretton [Melanson, the other co-founder] and I started this when we were 19, and it was a large undertaking. Now we’re 26 and it’s grown beyond us! But now we have the necessary reputation to put on a hell of a show.”

And what a show it is: 36 bands in two days, topped off with Californian deathgrind stars Cattle Decapitation and Canada’s own extreme metallers Anciients. The rest of the bill is a feast of Canadian and U.S. metal, from the vicious deathcore leanings of Angelmaker to the technical heavy metal leanings in Caveat, the power-infused melodeath of the hotly-tipped Crimson Shadows to the blackened death metal roar of Xul.

As well as a stellar lineup, there’s plenty of other forms of entertainment to keep a metalhead amused. Not least, AMF have announced a full-sized wrestling ring, kindly provided by BC’s very own Thrash Wrestling, which will stage a 2-hour show, the winner receiving a custom-made AMF Championship belt. There’s also a farmer’s market on the Saturday, “perfect to get blueberries for a hangover,” quips Valstar, and a long-standing tradition of a Beer Helmet March, where the creator of the most inventive beer case helmet gets two free passes for the next year. Random participants also get merch donated kindly from various bands of the festival, so it can pay off to slap a beercase over your head and walk.

Armstrong Metalfest runs from July 17th - 18th. You can pick up tickets right here. The finalized lineup is as follows: More...

Sabbath Assembly Announces Self-Titled Album

Svart Records has announced September 11th as the international release date for Sabbath Assembly's fifth album, self-titled "Sabbath Assembly." Svart comments:

"It marks a new beginning for the band: its 'Great Schism' from the Process Church of the Final Judgment. Like the albatross falling from the mariner’s neck, the band has freed itself from the cult’s theology in order to explore its own creations - with no special guest appearances or narrative frills. Sabbath Assembly is, in fact, a decidedly metal offering, for in the writing, the band returned to its own personal roots in the dark age of the '80s. These are Sabbath Assembly’s own 'hymns' for their own 'church' – a place marked by passion, devotion, and the gospel of metal.

"The primary thematic difference between Sabbath Assembly and its predecessors is that this album is about embodiment, addressing all the power and grit required to endure our human existence, rather than exploring spiritual philosophy alone. While the songs reference occult literature, such as Robert Chambers’ 'The King in Yellow,' Valeri Briussov’s 'The Fiery Angel of Desire,' and 'The Gospel of Thomas,' these texts were chosen not because of their abstraction from the mundane, but rather their propensity to embrace it as a means to spiritual understanding. If something is to be taken away from the new Sabbath Assembly album, it is this: the mysteries of occult philosophy are revealed not through celestial charts and diagrams, but rather the subtleties of earthly love and loss." Next To None Posts "Blood On My Hands" Clip

InsideOut teen prodigy band Next To None is a week away from the release of debut album "A Light in the Dark" on June 29th, 2015.

In advance of the album's release, the band is pleased to reveal a lyric video for the album's closing epic track, "Blood on my Hands." Vocalist/keyboardist Thomas Cuce had this to say about the track:

"At the time [I wrote the lyrics] it seemed like every day there was a different person going crazy somewhere and shooting up a building or whatever, and I would ask my self 'Why does this keep happening? What was that person thinking? What led them to do this?' So I tried to put myself in this person's head. I created a character and started from the aftermath of the event, which is where we first hear about it in the news."

Of the song's extended arrangement, he says, "It took us months to write this song and then months to learn it. We had a big dry erase board that we used to chart out all the parts with the time signatures until we had them memorized." More...

Johan Edlund Comments On Future Of Tiamat

Johan Edlund from Tiamat has issued the following statement about the future of the band and a clarification about previously claiming he was leaving the band:

"Friends. Last year, in a moment of doubt, I said I would leave Tiamat. My father had just passed away and I took that for a reason to drink. Drinking was more important than mourning.

"My heart stopped beating six times last year, and... I'm not even happy to be alive. I've been through all the pits of Hell you don't wanna know. But what matters, is that through out of all this, there are REAL friends, backing you up.

"In a moment of doubt, I decided to leave the band. I had seizure and had just been hospitalized for delirium and stroke.

"That was news to my good old friend Borivoj's Blabbermouth, and the like, of course. Wish you, dear friends will help us spread the word that is Tiamat. Yes, we're back & yes, we're working on a new album. That's no news for gossip, that's why I write it here smile emoticon When we stand up, no one seems to care? More...

Intervals Down To One Member

Aaron Marshall from Intervals has released a statement online about parting ways with all other band members and recording a new album. Read the full statement (giving Wintersun a run for its money in the length department) here:

"Hey guys, Aaron here. I'm writing this update to bring everyone up to speed on things. This is a little lengthy, but to put this all in perspective, I would like to recap the last four years. For anyone with questions about anything, you will want to read this. This is super important, so thanks in advance for reading!

"For those who don't know how this all started, Intervals is sort of an accident. In 2011, I began writing and recording my own music at home for the first time. After years of playing with local bands in Toronto, this was the first time I had written and recorded any of my own music. A close friend proposed the idea of filming me playing a tune (Still Winning) and cutting a video. Initially, I didn't understand the concept… 'Why would anyone want to watch me sit here and play guitar?'… After being persuaded, I sat down and performed the tune a countless amount of times while he filmed me.

"I didn't think anything of it, but he was very adamant about getting this thing out there for people to see. After showing me the finished product, I still didn't really get it… 'So, its like, a music video, but with no low budget actors and fake cars?…' From there, he prompted me to choose a name and create a YouTube and Facebook page. Being a perfectionist by nature, I was sort of reluctant to follow through, as I had intended to write an album's worth of material and put a band together, before venturing forward with music. After some coaxing, I sort of settled on the name Intervals and made all the necessary pages so he would stop hounding me to post this video. Having zero experience with anything like this, we were both taken back by the response this video was having. All of a sudden there was a surge of new people demanding more songs, new content, etc… I had nothing more than that one song and no idea what I should do next. As interest continued to grow, I felt that I owed it to myself, and anyone who cared, to follow through and see where I could take this thing.

"As a guitarist that also plays drums, it was very important to me, that I connect with a drummer on the same wavelength. I received an email from Anup about making a video for a tune and I was beyond excited. I had been following him on YouTube for some time and couldn't believe I would get to see him play one of my songs. Coincidentally, Matt Halpern (Periphery) and I had discussed that Anup would be an excellent fit and that perhaps we should consider working together. More...
