Ahab Comments On Album Art Similarities

Ahab has issued the following statement about people questioning the similarities between the cover from upcoming album "The Boats Of The Glen Carrig" and Giant Squid's "The Ichthyologist" release:

"Quite some messaging going around with the guys of Giant Squid (a San Fransisco based band) about our album artwork. They thought, our cover artwork of 'The Boats Of The Glen Carrig' is too close to the one of a re-issue of 'The Ichthyologist.' Unfortunately we didn't know the band or the cover. That being said: We still do not think there's much more similarity than a hand being turned into a sea-animal (two different one's btw). Anyway: We hope this settles the argument, cause we (and I guess also Giant Squid) do not like bitching with fellow artists. Now it's up to you, what to think of it."

Giant Squid also commented: "Been talking with Aahab, who say they, and the artist, we're officially and completely unfamiliar with both Giant Squid, and 'The Ichthyologist.' So there you go. Let's chalk it up to crazy coincidence, kindred spirits thinking alike, if you will.

"I love Ahab. One of my favorite bands going today. 'Divinity of Oceans' is almost perfect and is one of the only albums from a band I've just spontaneously acclaimed out of the blue on this page. 'The Giant' was great too, and I'm sure this new album will crush. And, as an illustrator, that album art is amazingly well done, truly beautiful. Except... eeesh, that sure reminds me of a cover of a certain landmark album by a certain band... Anyone else feeling me on this? Seems I'm not the only one calling it out in the comments. Eh, whatever I guess.

"Remember that one time we wrote an album about the New Jersey shark attacks, and then another band did it two years later. Yeah, me too. Sigh..." More...

Mantric Releasing "Die Old" EP

Norwegian outfit Mantric has issued the following announcement about releasing the "Die Old" EP:

"We know you've been waiting five long years...and so have we. But here - finally - new material from Mantric! We're happy to announce that we have signed a deal with Bergen's hardcore-pride Loyal Blood Records, where they know what it's like making music with your heart, and not your ego nor your greedy wallet.

"Later this year, they'll give you the whole album, but first you'll get the three-song EP 'Die Old.' Slightly more poppy than most of the album, you'll get the cathcy rock-oriented title-track, a 70s prog rock track and a cove rsong of the Cardigans.

"Hints of both Swervedriver, Landberk, Lanny Kravitz, Led Zeppelin and harder rock might be found here, in just three tracks. If you don't want to wait until June 19th to hear it, order one of these new Mantric shirts NOW and get the EP download instantly here."

Wulfhook Releasing "The Impaler"

Detroit's Wulfhook is joining the Divebomb Records roster and will see the release of debut album, "The Impaler," on July 17th, 2015. Dimebomb comments:

"Wulfhook, having formed in 2009, is a five piece American heavy metal band from Detroit, Michigan. They have impressively self-financed three remarkable demos including 2012’s stellar 'Sacrifice,' which are the recordings that lead to their deal with Divebomb Records.

"Their debut album, 'The Impaler,' is a culmination of years of hard work and overcoming unforeseen adversities along the way. The end result, which was mixed by Jamie King at his Basement Studios, is nothing short of magnificent. 'The Impaler,' simply put, is an unrelenting sonic attack that reveals a band that is completely unaffected by what’s popular or what other musicians are doing and is zeroed in on exactly what will make Wulfhook stand out in the over-crowded underground scene. No tongue in cheek retro throwback, just straight up heavy metal."

Stoneghost Releases "Raynardine" Video

In April, South London riff-monsters Stoneghost released relentless and blistering debut album "New Age of Old Ways" on the Mascot Label Group and will now drop new single "Raynardine" on June 22nd.

The accompanying video sees the band virtually exploding out of a tiny basement to which frontman Jason Smith said:

“'Raynardine' is unrelenting, dirty, aggressive and has a no nonsense attitude that could only be portrayed in a video that embodies all of these qualities. Filth goes hand in hand with this song, we knew the video needed to show the beast it is in its natural habitat. A grime ridden dungeon.” More...

Shardborne Enters The "Room Within A Room"

Shardborne, the prog metal act coming straight from the Emerald Isle, has released a video for "Room Within A Room," their first official clip from upcoming release "Living Bridges." The album is set for release on July 10th via Out On A Limb Records.

The video was filmed in two locations in Shardborne’s home city of Limerick. The band comments: "We spent a while talking over different locations and after the first shoot [in the church] it took us nearly a year to decide where to film the next part of the video.

"Actually choosing track ‘Room Within A Room’ as the first song to make into a video was an easy decision for the band. “We wanted to have a strong track for the first video and we plan on making videos for most if not all of the songs on 'Living Bridges.'

“’Room Within A Room’ is, oddly enough, the last track on the album. It offers a good idea as to the rest of the tunes. It's a good closer – we wanted to end Living Bridges on a strong note. Although there is no singing, there are musical themes repeated in the song at some points and this was reflected somewhat in the different lighting styles. We wanted to keep it as varied as possible so that it could stay visually as interesting as the music. More...

The Swedes have long enjoyed a massive cult status within underground circles, yet also gained strong acclaim and recognition by mainstream metal media and critics. More...

Threatpoint: America's Best Unsigned Metal Band

My connection to Threatpoint began in a most ironic way: by MISSING their show.

It was March 2014, and I was on a fact-finding trip to explore the heart of the underground metal scene in central and southwestern Virginia. After conducting a backstage interview during a sizable Lynchburg gig, word filtered through that I had missed the performance of the evening - by a band of unknown out-of-towners, no less.

It didn’t take long for drummer CJ Krukowski to find me. A short, wiry, mohawked guy with glasses and the zesty energy of about ten gallons of coffee, he pressed into my hands a copy of Threatpoint’s 2013 full-length debut “Dead To Rise.”

“We just sold out of merch,” he gushed breathlessly, as though unable to believe it himself. “ALL of it. We’d never been here before, and now it’s gone. Everyone just went nuts.”

A lively conversation followed, from CJ, to frontman Chris James, to then-guitarist Matt Gosselin, to then-bassist Ron Martin. As always, I parted ways by promising to give the band’s material a spin. Such promises are routinely tossed like pennies into a fountain; next comes the chore of actually listening. And I’d waded through enough average-to-mediocre music in my years as a metal journalist to become one step this side of jaded.

Then I actually listened to “Dead To Rise,” and Scranton, Pennsylvania-based Threatpoint instantly became my favorite unsigned American metal band. More...

The Great Discord Talks Disharmony On "Duende"

“Duende” is a term derived from Spanish mythology, which represented a fairy like creature. It basically means “having soul” – or a heightened state of emotion, expression of authenticity.

“Discord” is defined as a “lack of agreement or harmony” or a “combination of musical sounds that strikes the ear harshly.”

“The Great Discord” is a band from Linkoping Sweden that has a style and a name that are very much in accord. With elements derived from bands like Meshuggah and Opeth with a touch of Voivod, there is a soundscape of wonder that waits on the smash debut album “Duende.” With a deliberate inharmonious approach that keeps the listener on his/her toes, one can never predict where each song takes you. Imbalance, disharmony, discordancy, disunion are all words that describe the mix of sounds on “Duende,” all which center around the strong vocals of Fia Kempe to create a beautiful work of art.

Co-founders Fia Kempe (vocals) and Aksel Holmgren (drums) took out some time to answer questions about how the band got started and exactly what is at work on “Duende.” More...
