Pit Stories: Napping In The Bass Bin

Every week we chat up musicians from throughout the heavy music scene to get their favorite Pit Stories from the mayhem of metal shows.

Today David Defeis of Virgin Steele shares the following tale of a fan who found a rather odd place to take a nap:

Virgine Steele played a place in Staten Island called The Paramount Theatre a couple of times with Manowar. On this one particular evening, during our set I noticed that a kid had passed out inside the bass bin of one of the PA stacks. I asked security to check on him, they said they would, and I assumed that they did and I went about my night doing all the things that one has to do at a gig.

When I finally had a moment to catch a view of the stage once again, somewhere near the end of Manowar's set, I noticed that this same kid was still passed out in the bass bin. I don’t know what happened to him, his hearing or his reproductive capacity… but it could not have been a terribly good thing for him to have been held in the grip of that sonic onslaught for all those hours from 2 very loud groups!

Virgin Steele is gearing up to release "Nocturnes of Hellfire & Damnation" on June 22nd in Europe and June 23rd in the USA via SPV/Steamhammer. Check out the lyric video for "Lucifer's Hammer" below. More info on the album can be found at this location. More...

Jason W. Walton Releasing New Album

Agalloch bassist and Self Spiller mastermind Jason W. Walton has been creating surreal and otherworldly soundscapes for over twenty years.

In the '90s he began working under the name Nothing and released four full-length albums and various EPs. He performed live as Nothing in the Midwest and the West Coast before retiring the name in 2003. Watlon remained busy with other musical endeavors knowing that a return to ambient noise was imminent.

In the summer of 2013, Walton began the songwriting process again by collecting field recordings from places he would visit. He captured the din of humanity on the downtown Portland streets, the rush of ocean waves in Southern California, and the mysteriously comforting monologues emanating from an AM radio.

During mid-2014, Walton manipulated and processed these sounds into disturbingly haunting pieces which would become the basis of his soon-to-be released "Mara" seven-inch. More...

Abyssion Releasing New Album

The Finnish black metal psychonauts from Abyssion will release "Luonnon harmonia ja vihreä liekki" via Svart Records on July 3rd.

Featuring members of Dark Buddha Rising and Oranssi Pazuzu and hand-picked by Kvohst (Beastmilk, Grave Pleasures, Hexvessel, ex-DHG/Code) as the first in a series of releases for his Svart imprint label Secret Trees, Abyssion is a rare treasure in a scene in nuclear meltdown.

The music on the recording is a mind-altering mix of Burzumic hypnosis and classic Finnish punk. It comes on like a dosage of the purest form of an early 90s black metal drug and kicks into a euphoric state of punk abandon, like the early morning hours of a drunken festival in the middle of a Finnish forest. The track listing is: More...

Nothing Donating Proceeds To LGBT Non-Profits

Philadelphia's Nothing has announced a special vinyl repress of debut album "Guilty of Everything" in honor of LGBT Pride Month.

The new edition, features the original black and white album cover with a rainbow flag in place of the white flag. The special repress will be available in select indie stores on June 2nd while a limited rainbow colored version is available exclusively via Relapse online.

The band and Relapse Records will donate a portion of the proceeds from each sale to the LGBT awareness non-profits, the It Gets Better Project and New Alternatives. Frontman Nicky Palermo commented on the LGBT version of the album:

"We had just finished the fourth pressing of GOE on pink vinyl in collaboration with Insound/Gilda's Club NYC to support the fight against breast cancer. We were able to donate a portion of the sale and I thought that was a really great idea.

"Relapse and myself discussed options for the fifth pressing when we noticed the release date would end up falling in the middle of LGBT pride month, so we searched for a suitable non profit that we could do the same.

"We decided to split the proceeds among two charities and decided upon the It Gets Better Project and New Alternatives. It Get's Better focus' on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans youth's struggle of growing up in a society where many do not understand them and in many cases turn to tormenting and torture. In that they show these teens that there is a bright side coming and that they are far from alone. New Alternatives provide support services for homeless LGBT youth." More...

Suicide Watch Re-Issuing "Global Warning"

Some people are born to rock; a few are born to thrash and Suicide Watch definitely belongs to the latter!

Late 2003 saw four guys - enthusiastic veterans of the thrash, hardcore and crossover scenes - get together in the back alleys of Cheltenham England to form Suicide Watch, a band committed to relentless musical mayhem.

The debut album, "Global Warning," was a demonstration highlighting the band's ability to distill its collective knowledge of the genre resulting in one of the most potent thrash releases outside of the Bay Area. The album was picked up and released in 2005 via Belgian metal label Mausoleum Records.

Having signed to Irish label, Slaney Records, in 2010 for the release of third studio record "The Culling of Humanity," the label would go on to release "The Alienation Zone" EP in 2014 and live album "This Cursed Earth" in March 2015. Marquee Records, (a sister label of Slaney Records), has now announced the label will breathe new life into the debut Suicide Watch record, re-issuing "Global Warning" on June 22nd, 2015. More...

Machinergy Covers "I Don't Care"

Machinergy has a cover of "I Don't Care" by the Ramones, which can be heard below. Vocalist / guitarist Rui Vieira also comments:

"Believe it or not, they are one of our major influences! Joey, Johnny, Tommy, Dee Dee, this one is for you, my friends! Ramones forever!!! 'I Don’t Care' from the Ramones is the first version of a song from another band made by Machinergy.

"This connection with the Raomnes comes from the time we started the three (Rui, Helder and Nuno, current members of Machinergy) playing in our first project called Mortalha. By that time (90/91), my uncle’s father offered me 'It's Alive,' purchased at the Feira da Ladra market in Lisbon. I think this album worked for all of us as the true definition of what rock n’ roll is.

"Of all the songs on this double gatefold vinyl, 'I Don’t Care' was the one that stood out and from there until we started playing it was a step. Looking back, 'I Don’t Care' was the very first full song we rehearsed. This after entering in our life... the mighty power chord! More...
