Pit Stories: Crippling Vomit Anxiety

Rejoice metal fans: it's a surprise double Pit Story day!

After a beer-chucking tale from The Riven earlier today, we return with a bonus Pit Story from Jake Dreyer of Witherfall who, as it turns out, is not a fan of the pit.

Jake recounts these harrowing pit memories, from one very angry lady sending him scrambling for safety to cheap beer and hot dog vomit heralding his guitar solo:

Ah, pit stories. These are always fun. Truth be told I actually don’t like mosh pits and try to avoid them at all cost when I am attending a show. Yes, I am the guy who hangs out by front of house where I know it is safe and sound. On one rare occasion I tried to venture away into the uncharted waters of the standing room only area to see the show up close. All was good until a very angry 4 foot 9 female who looked like a cross between Sid Vicious and the dog from the Muppets got so motivated by the music of the show I was attending that randomly she decided to shove me into the stage. Afterwards I cowered in fear like a scolded dog and went to watch the show back at the soundboard far away from the chaos. I still have no idea why she was so upset….

Anyways, I do love watching pits from onstage all the energy just gets fed back and forth between the band and the crowd and for a second it takes you away from the reality that you are just a circus monkey turning tricks for peanuts. These are fun, until they turn ugly. Like on a recent tour playing in Budapest (I think) I watched someone get hit so hard they passed out and the crowd just picked them up and threw them over the security barrier like tossing a wet towel in a bin. Watching a limp body just fall hard to the ground of the pit while security dragged them away was a little dark. Fights can be difficult to watch too, they do not happen regularly but I have seen a couple break out in a pit where guys were beating the hell out of each other blood and other bodily fluids squirting uncontrollably through the air.

Though out of all of this, my worst story has to deal with my crippling anxiety of watching people throw up. I am not kidding. It scares the shit out of me to watch myself or someone around me vomit. This does not work playing in a metal band where to let loose men love to pound fistful of cheap beer and run around until their stomachs turn on themselves expelling their partially digested pre-show hot dog. This happened to me once, as someone in the front row on my side of the stage puked over the barrier after I finished a guitar solo. Perhaps maybe that was their way of showing me what they felt of my playing. If so then I commend them.

Witherfall released latest album "Nocturnes And Requiems" back in February - check out a track from the release below, and a previous pit story from Witherfall all about mob justice can be read over here. More...

Pit Stories: Saviours Of The Gig

Spilled beer is a universal tragedy - unless its spilled in the name of saving a show!

We've had a quite a few Pit Stories covering the suds spilling to detrimental effects, and this week's tale features a full Guinness getting pitched directly into one unruly fan's unsuspecting face.

After we premiered new song "Killer On The Loose" last week, bassist Max Ternebring of The Riven checked in with us to offer up this tale from the pit:

I’ve been to quite a few gigs in my life, and I’ve played some pretty cool ones as well. This thing that happened though was when I was in London at The High Voltage festival, the second edition in Victoria Park. A really good festival that was, but unfortunately they don’t run it anymore. But fear not – it has morphed into Stone Free Festival and as well Ramlin’ Man Fair.

Anyways, I was watching the legendary Judas Priest doing their supposedly "last gig ever," they were gonna stop touring after that one and KK had already called it quits. The show was late in the afternoon/early evening. The sun had been shining all through the day and the beer had obviously been flowing as it does at a hard rock festival!

I was standing with my crew, enjoying Halford's epicness whilst the sun was setting and I was just having the best time! Unfortunately there was this big dude, the biggest I’ve ever seen, arms like logs and he was drunk out of his mind. At first I didn’t notice it, but after a while I saw that this guy got into a fight with a much smaller dude, over what I can only assume had something to do with him being an awful person and trying to ruin everyone else’s experience.

It was at that point that I found myself with a nice full Guinness in my hand, that my girlfriend had just bought and asked me to hold. I obviously had to give it my best shot at throwing it on this dude, given the situation. So of course I threw that Guinness and of course I hit him right in the face.

At that point he looked at me and I thought to myself - he’s definitely gonna kill me. He rushed towards me like a big angry bull and started waving his logs of arms to hit the crap out of me. I ducked and moved like a cobra and fortunately for me, my black belt karate drummer friend managed to do some karate kid moves and knocked this guy out in perfect time for the security to arrive. They managed to get that guy out of there and we were celebrated as the saviours of the gig. After that, the beers did flow and the best part of it – Judas Priest is still touring!

London-based group The Riven will drop debut EP "Blackbird" on April 14th, with five tracks bringing to mind the glory of the '70s. Check out EP track "One Last Time" below. More...

Exhumed Enters The Studio

California extreme metal crew Exhumed just entered the studio to record a sixth album and follow-up to 2013's "Necrocracy." The album will be entitled "Death Revenge" and will see a late 2017 release via Relapse Records.

Issues founding guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey: "We entered the studio April 1st with our buddy Jarrett Pritchard (Gruesome, Goatwhore) to start the process and no, this is not an elaborate April Fool's joke... 'All Guts, No Glory' was more of a straight-up speeding attack, 'Necrocracy' had a bit more focus on groove and incorporating some mid-paced stuff in there, and this one is gonna be a lot darker.

"It's a concept album, which is a first for us, so expect some new twists on our tried-and-true formula: one part late '80s death metal, half a cup of German/Canadian/Bay Area thrash, a dash of grindcore, crossover, and crust, and the occasional, well-concealed, Hall And Oates rip-off."

In related news, Exhumed has confirmed a string of European tour dates this June, which include a performance at Hellfest and follow their North American appearances at Modified Ghost Festival II in Vancouver and the Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore in May. More...

God Dethroned Reveals New Album Details

On May 5th, Dutch death metallers God Dethroned will release new album, "The World Ablaze," worldwide via Metal Blade Records. Check out first single "On the Wrong Side of the Wire" below, and you can find pre-order info at this location.

God Dethroned comments: "'The World Ablaze' is our final album in the WWI trilogy. We aimed to create an album that is very dynamic and diverse. It contains typical GD riffing with loads of melodies and catchy hooks.

"The songs are perfect for our live shows as they contain many mid-tempo parts combined with faster and more brutal parts. Diversity to the max! Dan Swano mixed the album in his typical fashion but without robbing the band of its own identity.

"Mastering was handled at the Wisseloord Studios where they also mastered albums for bands like Rammstein, among many others, and they put the icing on the cake. The album sounds crystal clear and heavy as fuck at the same time. We are very proud to present this album during our upcoming Serpent Fest album release shows early May!"

Former Ghouls Suing Papa Emeritus

Update: former guitarist Simon Söderberg has now issued a statement about the reasons behind the lawsuit and which Ghouls are involved.

After winning both U.S. and Swedish Grammy awards, sadly not all is well within the Ghost camp.

According to a story posted on Swedish site Corren.se, several former Nameless Ghouls are now suing Papa Emeritus of Ghost.

An excerpt from the article (translated to English so a bit is lost) reads as follows:

"Leader of the rock band Ghost of Linkoping sued by four of the band members. He is accused of having managed the stores around Ghost completely without insight from someone else in the band. It appears from a lawsuit Linköping District Court.

" Behind the mood is four musicians in the world famous, acclaimed and secret hard rock group Ghost. According to the lawsuit claims the Quartet (the partners) to:

* Court states that partnership exists between the five musicians
* Jointly conducts the music group Ghost
* Partnership agreement prescribes that the band leader to carry out the management of the company's operations.

"The four musicians behind the application also demand that the court should require the bandleader under penalty of SEK 200 000, or the amount that the court considers reasonable, the company reported revenues and expenses for the financial years 2011 to 2016 and that he also recognizes the company's assets at December 31, 2016. The reason for the lawsuit is missing wages and allowances for several years."

According to the full article, relations between the Ghouls and Papa Emeritus soured over the years, with complaints of missing payments and un-signable contracts that put the musicians into untenable positions. It's unclear just which of the Ghouls are involved in the lawsuit and what their real identities are at the moment.

Papa Emeritus has declined to comment on the lawsuit thus far, but a statement is expected to be forthcoming at some point.

Mammoth Mammoth Premieres "Sleepwalker" Video

Mammoth Mammoth - our favorite dirt rockers from Australia, delivers another powerful addition to a long list of prior convictions with the new album "Mount The Mountain."

It's cover features a barely clad desert siren peering over her terrain to either seduce or render a hellish curse upon those poor souls she lures. Aptly, the album echoes the same ‘one-two’ combo, with eleven power-fisted tracks that threaten to blow your mind - and smack you in the ear hole! "Mount the Mountain" drops on April 28th via Napalm Records.

Today the band teams up with MetalUnderground.com for the premiere of a new video clip for the song "Sleepwalker."

Stompers like "Sleepwalker," "Spellbound," "Hole In The Head" and "Kickin’ My Dog," gate crash there way into a sweaty, raucous, out-of-control, house party that’s been thrown by bunch of zombie bikers - and Mikey Tucker has just taken over as DJ. Then there’s the unsettling menace of songs like "Epitome," "Wild and Dead" and title track, "Mount the Mountain" - that lead us blindfolded into a hellish inferno of psyched-out riffs, and debauched, fist-pumping anthems. Here you realize that danger is your savior, and that fear is the party starter. More...

Secret Sphere Unveils "The Nature Of Time"

Frontiers Music Srl is excited to present the release of "The Nature of Time," the new album from Italian progressive metal act Secret Sphere. The band's ninth studio album will be issued on June 2nd.

The new recording celebrates 20 years of hard work that started back in 1997 with the release of the band's widely praised debut album, "Mistress Of The Shadowlight." Since then, Secret Sphere has evolved and developed a unique style into what has become a trademark sound, making the the band one of an elite groups putting the Italian metal scene on the global map. The addition of extraordinary singer Michele Luppi (also currently serving as keyboardist and background vocalist for the legendary hard rock act, Whitesnake) in 2012 brought the band to the next level. This was evidenced by his first release with the band, "Portrait Of A Dying Heart," receiving wide fan and critical acclaim and landing on many metal journalists best releases of 2012 lists.

The new album, "The Nature Of Time", proves to be the ultimate showcase of the band's skill in composing highly orchestrated songs and introducing the foray into a new age of heavy rock and metal music. High class songs with amazing choruses, big vocals, majestic orchestral arrangements, and amazing, mind-blowing, guitar heroics are the order of the day.

"The Nature Of Time" explores the "back to life" concept, an inward looking search of the self that can positively impact everyone's everyday life.

"The long writing process of this album has been a constant 're-living' of memories and feelings, that started with only instrumental pieces that were put together only in order to vent my then current state of mind: a way to express emotions purely, without any kind of 'holding back,' so to speak. I then talked to Michele and we decided these were the perfect basis for a new Secret Sphere record," states guitarist Aldo Lonobile. More...
