Below comments: "With 'Upon a Pale Horse' we feel that we have found our sound. We have grown as songwriters and this album contains our fastest and slowest, shortest and longest, heaviest and most melodic songs to date. Making this album more diverse yet still staying true to the core of heavy riffs and melodies that is Below. We recorded 'Upon a Pale Horse' in Deep Blue Studios, the studio where we recorded our first EP, so in some sense it felt like we were returning to our roots."

Longhouse Streams New Single

Set to unleash sophomore album "II: Vanishing" digitally on April 14th via Bandcamp (with physical cassette release coming June 2017 via Sunmask Records) Ottawa doom metal trio Longhouse today releases new single 'Vigil," which features JD Gobeil from Loviatar.

Vocalist / bassist Joshua Cayer comments: "This song was written as a collaborative effort with JD Gobeil from Loviatar. It is an exploration of stories of the Thunderbirds. In First Nations stories and traditions, the Thunderbirds are powerful spirits, second only to the Creator. These immense birds dwell in the mountains and have the primary purpose of protector and nurturer of Mother Earth - guarding her from harm, quenching her thirst, and replenishing her garments.

"Thunderbirds are the enemy of the horned-serpents, who live deep beneath the waters and threaten to spread across the land and devour all life. They hold a constant vigil, to protect Mother Earth and all life from their foe. The Thunderbird is a good spirit, however, they are to be feared as they are quick to anger by those who ignore or disobey the natural laws, and are indifferent to humans and animals in their guardianship of our Mother, the earth."

2. Vanishing (6:13)
3. Blood And Stone (5:57)

Rapheumets Well Announces New Album

Blending a sound that is a complex mix of classical orchestrations, cosmic synths, and extreme metal to portray the epics of parallel worlds, Hickory, N.C. based Rapheumets Well (Ra-few-mets) brings forth a voyage enriched with original lore.

Inspired by the fictitious universe of Sovael, Rapheumets Well is the name coined to a conscious deity who oversees the anastomosis of the multiverse, the master of portals and inter-dimensional travel. Being personified as a trickster, Rapheumet often creates chaos for unsuspecting voyagers. The word “Well” refers to gravity wells, which like black holes, are catalyst of change and gateways between the cosmic plains.

“We created this name in hopes of personifying a living gateway between dimensions. We love science fiction and a few of us have extended education and degrees in science,” says drummer Joshua Ward.

The band’s third release "Enders Door" is now due out on May 26th via Test Your Metal Records. The album takes place in the fifth era of the Avomenian Empire, amidst the planetary ruins of Vaath, where a rogue traveler would discover an artifact that would forever change his place in the cosmos. This Curse Standing On "Quicksand" With New Video

After spending a few years making a name by performing and touring in the eastern U.S. and releasing three EP's (most recently 2016's "Emergence"), New Jersey metalcore five-piece This Curse decided it was time for re-birth and a fresh name.

Formerly called The Blessing Of This Curse, the band saw room for improvement and development in sound and style, and plan to unveil that full progression on an upcoming, currently-untitled album.

Marking the band's official transition into a new moniker and style, This Curse today reveals a brand new music video for "Quicksand," which was filmed, directed, and edited by Eric DiCarlo at SquareUp Studios.

"To put it simply, we wanted a video that just showcased us and the music. No complicated story line, no cheesy acting, just five dudes doing what we do every night on stage," says guitarist/vocalist Joey Galletta Jr. "Although the song was originally released under our old name, 'The Blessing of This Curse', we felt that this music video was a perfect way to close that chapter and transition our fans to what's to come with this curse. Dragonforce Comments on "Reaching Into Infinity"

There is technical and then there is Dragonforce. Listeners try to discredit the band, saying they use too many effects, but an effect can’t make your fingers move with the precision and speed the band possesses. Guitarist Herman Li has made a career out of complex notes. Don’t think Dragonforce is all flash and no substance, though, the band writes very “powerful” power metal songs. Sometimes they’re thrashy and fast, sometimes they’re melodic and slow—whatever the case it, Dragonforce is one of the biggest power metal bands in the world. Even though Mr. Li doesn’t want to acknowledge numbers, last year the band played in front of nearly 200,000 people at Woodstock in Portland, Oregon.

Now the band is gearing up to release another album, “Reaching Into Infinity,” which will drop on May 19. Shredder extraordinaire, Herman Li spoke with me concerning the album, playing live and about their being on another video game. Listen to the interview as you scroll down through the text.

Edensong Releases New Video

New York City-based progressive group Edensong just unveiled an official video for the expansive "In The Longest Of Days," which hails from the band's intense Laser's Edge-released "Years In The Garden Of Years" album (reviewed here).

Expanding on the video, the band's James Schoen delves in and says: "'In The Longest Of Days' is really the song that inspired the concept behind the album 'Years In The Garden Of Years.' It was the first song I wrote from scratch for Edensong since the 'Fruit Fallen' days and it remains one of my favorites, and one that flowed really easily for me. Conceptually, the song depicts a lifetime in the span of a single day; All our desires, aspirations, and struggles distilled into a solitary rotation of the earth on its axis.

"True to the concept, we filmed the video in the span of a single day, up in rural Vermont, where I felt the epic landscape could really complement the feel of the music. Once again, we teamed up with our good friend filmmaker Nick Fiore, and worked with an incredible local dancer Hanna Satterlee. Since just getting the guys in the band together for rehearsal can often be a challenge, I was quite nervous about our ability to pull all this off in a day (especially considering it was an outdoor shoot in Vermont in the middle of November) but things couldn't have come together more perfectly! Thanks, global warming! Both the song and the video shoot flowed pretty effortlessly, a rarity in my experience!" More...

Sliptrick Records Signs Dionisyan

Italian atmospheric doom metal act Dionisyan is the latest roster signee for Sliptrick Records. The band is currently working on the sophomore full length album, which will be a conceptual release as was the debut "The Mystery of Faith" (2014).

In the Spring of 2010, Tregor Russo decided to give life to a new musical project, with the intent to create music and lyrics from the deep feelings, pathos, melancholic emotions and immerse them in complex gloomy arrangements. For the second release, expect more music structured in his polyrhythmic contrapuntal polyphony style.

Ye Banished Privateers Signs With Napalm Records

Ahoy sailors! Known for their excellent taste and passion for pirates in metal, Napalm Records welcomes a new band to the diverse and exciting artist roster and label family: Ye Banished Privateers has signed a worldwide record deal with Napalm Records! The band's third studio album titled "First Night Back In Port" will be released on June 30th.

Ye Banished Privateers takes you 300 years back in time for an imaginary journey through the harsh life at sea during the early 18th century. With songs inspired by traditional Irish and Scandinavian folk music, acting and elaborate historical clothing the privateers tell a story about the rough sailor's life, lived on the other side of the law - and the fight against oppression and nationalism.

Together, the nearly 30 crew members take turns to go on tour and plunder, and with around a dozen sailors on stage no two shows are ever the same. The mix of rude folk and punk music invites you to dance and sing along, while the gripping ballads will make the toughest pirate heart soft. More...

Witchapter Premieres New EP "Spellcaster"

This coming New Release Friday is a big one, and amongst the deluge of freshly dropped music will be the "Spellcaster" EP from Witchapter.

Coming via Black Bow Records this Friday, April 7th, "Spellcaster" shows a blend of sludge and doom serving as the debut from the Witchapter trio. Formed by guitarist/vocalist Chris Grenfell in spring 2016 with Bobby Smith (bass) and Louie Spencer (drums), Witchapter’s personnel are by no means new to their trade. You can follow the latest on the band at Facebook here.

Before the official release date we're premiering all three tracks from this aptly-named EP online ahead of time - listen in below! Stylistically raw and stripped down, heavily de-tuned bass and rhythm guitars deliver a solid wall of super overdriven tones while the drums lead a thundering march through the mire of sludge and fog, with vocals adding the final cries of disparity.

The name Witchapter derives from a mutual respect and adoration for nature and the earth, particularly referencing a time when doing so was regarded as a crime. The band comments:

"Prior to the 13th century witchcraft involved a collection of practices and beliefs centered on healing. In practice this utilized ointments and potions prepared using natural ingredients and administered to the patient as a remedy for the particular ailment.

"This created a destabilizing effect on the church and it was not long before the clergy, empowered by a movement passed by the Roman Catholic leadership, began branding these ‘healers’ as witches and heretics, the punishment being for those found guilty: death by burning.

"The accused were forced to confess, even if innocent, via brutal torture and then burnt alive to purify their souls and ‘save them.' The lyrical content leans heavily on the accounting of these times and inspires the aesthetics chosen for the graphical representation of the music." More...

Gods Of Silence Signs With ROAR Rock Of Angels

Da Bonad Details New Album "Mystericum"

Bavarian act Da Bonad announced the impending release of the new album "Mystericum." The album will be issued on June 2nd via Pure Rock Records, a division of Pure Steel Records. The pre-order phase will start on May 19th at Pure Steel's webshop.

Everybody knows what Bavaria looks like. But how does it sound like these days? Only Da Boanad: Just heavy guitars and lots of them, strong grooves and a characteristic voice that reflects in rock and Bavarian culture. Da Boanad is Bavarian like the mighty alps. Da Boanad is harsh, powerful and no time ever conform. The new Bavarian hardness at it's best!

"Mystericum" is an album loaded with pure and energetic heavy rock nourished from the influences of all the band members. For just that reason you have a rough styled rock 'n' roll that unites the band. Riffs in songs like "Des Hosd Davo“ or "Finster Werds“ prove it.

The lyrics are authentic, but Bavarian hardcore. Other bands that have jumped on the Bavarian wagon like it easy going. Da Boanad just rocks full on. The Bavarian message is rough and dramatically anarchistic.

The track listing for the album is:

1. Wuidara
2. Da Aff
3. Misericordia
4. Des Host Davo
5. Scheinheilig
6. Indianer Aufm Kriagspfod
7. Dampfmaschin
8. Bluatgeid

The Ferrymen Announce Debut Release

Frontiers Music Srl is truly excited to present The Ferrymen's self-titled debut album, set for release on June 2nd.

The Ferrymen is a brand new project featuring guitarist Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear, Magnus Karlsson's Free Fall) and vocalist Ronnie Romero Official Site (Lords Of Black, Rainbow), together with drummer Mike Terrana (Rage, Axel Rudi Pell, MasterPlan and more). Watch the band's official EPK below.

The songs were written by Karlsson in Sweden during the summer of 2016. Once Romero was sent the music via their main bands' shared label home Frontiers, he immediately wanted to be part of the project. Terrana was the last piece of the puzzle and he recorded his drums in Italy, where he currently resides.

The resulting album is a shot of adrenaline for all lovers of melodic metal! Musically, you can expect maximum melodic metal fusing the songwriting and epic structures of the great Allen/Lande records (for which Magnus Karlsson was the main architect of the first three widely praised releases) with the Ronnie James Dio-esque vocal approach of Romero (Let's not forget that Romero was hand-picked by Deep Purple and Rainbow's legendary guitarist Richie Blackmore to be the lead vocalist for Rainbow's recent reunion shows, so the Dio comparison is more than accurate).
